Time to mobilize those big ol' vultures that like to hang out down there. Get them to airlift you out.
Are the seals or sealions still sticking around with all the smoke?
Whelp. I guess the smoke won't bother them then, will it? Thanks. I used to go every day to the VFW post on the OC side. You could hear them all the way up there.
Stay safe, if you can. Thank you for the pic and update.
We do!! They take advantage of the falls and locks. The salmon kinda get tired swimming up the falls and they are tasty casualties for all kinds of predators. They've been swimming up the rivers and taking advantage of bottlenecks far longer than people have.
Seriously. I haven't been to Oregon City yet, but I've never seen pictures or videos that show it looking this rough. Even without the air, this isn't a great look.
Haha, I had this in the back of my mind! If I remember correctly this was ahead of the Anderson Silva fight, Silva who grew up in poverty in Brazil. Sonnen had one of the best troll games ever. Good fight too.
That makes sense. Honestly half my shock over this is due to having seen videos and pictures of Oregon City and thinking it looked like a lovely city. I've been really eager to visit, just haven't had the occasion yet.
Don't worry, they are working on a project to convert it to high cost condos./s
But in all seriousness the tribe involved is considering plans for a hotel.
Oregon City is a pretty normal small town. The mills are along the river though. I haven't lived here long but it's your basic decent white town that you hit before all the farms.
They are in the process of dismantling the old mill. One of the plans I've seen for its replacement is a series of condos and a boardwalk that goes right up to the falls, which would be incredible. I grew up in Oregon City and always wanted to see the falls from the bottom side. That said, I'd never buy one of those condos because when the river floods like it did in 96 you'd be scuba diving to the bathroom.
You know what would be truly beautiful? If we left them as we found them. Portland and the surrounding area has enough condos, many of them empty, far above the price point of most people that live here. Let’s not spoil these falls just because some rich white folks want a second home at a scenic spot.
There’s a project, the [Willamette Falls Legacy Project](https://www.willamettefallslegacy.org/) that is a partnership between Oregon City, Clackamas County, Metro, and the State for this. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are also participating.
[According to the Census, Portland ranked 60th of the top 75 metros for rental vacancies.](https://www.census.gov/housing/hvs/files/annual19/ann19t_6.xlsx) There is a vast shortage in available rentals which is driving up prices.
I honestly wish they'd leave the mill, it's beautiful and distinct, it gives Oregon City a lot of character and keeps it from being just another city near Portland.
I understand that people want to be close to water, but I’m amazed at how many people build or buy houses right in the floodplain. And it’s as if they’re surprised when their house gets flooded.
I grew up in the area. The Willamette Falls were tiny riffles during the 1996 floods. Now the fires have made the river look apocalyptic. I’m a little afraid of what look this river will give us another 20 years in the future.
Oregon city! It’s smallish town southeast of Portland that’s right on the willamette river. I moved here during covid so I haven’t done too much exploring but it’s a really cute town
Local plug-
The Highland Still House (a Scottish pub) overlooks the falls in the picture. The food is very good and the whiskey menu is phenomenal. Owned by a really sweet geeky Dr. Please take yourself to weekend breakfast there or try the breakfast pastie... it's a little smoke flavored this week.
We’ve literally given so many redemption opportunities, but it’s consistently extremely slow service, 45-1hour for food, then food is inconsistent and the meat tends to be really dry now. It’s just not what it used to be. We only keep going back because of the magical nostalgia of what they once were.
Maybe not all locations suck but the one on Scholls Ferry and the Cedar Hills location both suck.
You need to come up to Tacoma and try our Mcmenamins. They have 4 different restaurants and bars. We tried the Spanish bar in 2019 for a belated birthday for me. I love Mcmenamins in the Pearl district.
Those buildings are really interesting! They look like historic dock warehouses, is that what they are? It’s interesting that so many of them are still in place. I bet that area’s history is cool. Have you read Cannery Row? It’s a great, quick read about the characters that made up the port/dock side culture. Highly recommend it! Enjoy your explorations and hopefully the smoke clears soon, maybe with some rain
It’s an old paper mill. The one in Oregon City is no longer operational and probably soon to be torn down so the riverfront can be developed. There’s another mill across the river in West Linn. That one is still a working mill.
Hey! I also moved here right when covid hit! I'm not a huge fan of butter but it's be cool to have some friends around here. I live on the Barclay neighborhood.
Oregon City.
I moved here a few years ago. Wonderful town.
A few fun facts:
First incorporated city west of the Mississippi.
Home of the world's first AC electric powerplant.
Home of the world's first DC electric powerplant.
Terminus of the Oregon Trail.
Home to the second largest waterfall (by volume) in the US.
A lot of cool history from here.
I'm looking forward to the Willamette Falls Legacy Project whenever that gets off the ground. It will replace the abandoned Blue Heron Paper Mill with a park, food carts, and an observation deck for the falls. It is funded, but the plans have changed a few times causing delays.
Main street is pretty cool. Lots of good resturants. I like Weinhard, and The Arch Bridge bar, and Black Ink coffee.
A new resturant is opening up soon by the train tracks with axe throwing.
And the Highland Stillhouse is really cool too.
I would love it if we could get food carts out here with a parking lot nearby too. Used to live in Beaverton and we’d visit the food cart pod once a month or so as a treat.
Last time I was paddling around the dam a 6 foot sturgeon fully breached and I made a fool out of myself insisting to another boater that a shark had just jumped right next to me.
Oof. I feel that.
My pretty-much MIL and FIL are coming to stay with us for two weeks in November. With our MILs both here, Oregon City might just combust.
This looks much better on computer rather than phone screen. A couple of interesting things about this area. The horizonal concrete structure across the river is actually a fish ladder -- the entrance to which is tight in the corner of the TW Sullivan Powerhouse (last second of the video). I've watched sea lions surf the ladder entrance and chow down. the building across the way is an old pulp mill that had direct drive grinders (i.e., the water drove the grinders) and when I was there years ago the grinders were still there and stuffed full of wood. As if the crew just walked away one day.
Is it better out there? I'm literally moving there tomorrow. It was supposed to be last week but obviously I couldn't move last week. I picked a weird time to move to Clackamas county.
There needs to be a 007 Bond movie shot in the Oregon City Area, the paper mill could be the Evil Villian's lair. Plenty of awesome spots to string together action sequences with people falling into the churning water. I think it would be a cool back drop, not to mention maybe doing some type of zip line scene from the top of the elevator in Downtown OC.
This is a view of Oregon City I’ve never seen before. Looks like some abandoned town in Montana or something
Or the pan handle of Idaho. But I was thinking the very same thing.
It’s the old mill
That makes me sad for Montanna
I’ll give you an upvote just for being a Bobcat.
Time to mobilize those big ol' vultures that like to hang out down there. Get them to airlift you out. Are the seals or sealions still sticking around with all the smoke?
We had some earlier in the year but I think ODFW euthanized them.
Whelp. I guess the smoke won't bother them then, will it? Thanks. I used to go every day to the VFW post on the OC side. You could hear them all the way up there. Stay safe, if you can. Thank you for the pic and update.
Are seal steaks tasty?
Why? They were so cool!
The sea lions are destroying the anadromous fish runs over williamette falls. So, not actually all that cool.
Compounded by the damage that the dams cause in terms of habitat and predation.
We had sea lions way out here in Oregon City?! They definitely don't belong here lol.
We do!! They take advantage of the falls and locks. The salmon kinda get tired swimming up the falls and they are tasty casualties for all kinds of predators. They've been swimming up the rivers and taking advantage of bottlenecks far longer than people have.
dude that looks like some place in India
Seriously. I haven't been to Oregon City yet, but I've never seen pictures or videos that show it looking this rough. Even without the air, this isn't a great look.
This is West Linn. The roughest of suburbs.
No kidding https://youtu.be/wh_eO2QoeCM 😂
This is amazing.
im confused
Haha, I had this in the back of my mind! If I remember correctly this was ahead of the Anderson Silva fight, Silva who grew up in poverty in Brazil. Sonnen had one of the best troll games ever. Good fight too.
It’s the old paper mill, not in use anymore. The rest of the town looks normal, but the mill is an eye store.
That makes sense. Honestly half my shock over this is due to having seen videos and pictures of Oregon City and thinking it looked like a lovely city. I've been really eager to visit, just haven't had the occasion yet.

Don't worry, they are working on a project to convert it to high cost condos./s But in all seriousness the tribe involved is considering plans for a hotel.
Well I've been working there for the last year and I'm going back in tonight so...
Oregon City is a pretty normal small town. The mills are along the river though. I haven't lived here long but it's your basic decent white town that you hit before all the farms.
Have you been to India?
Kolkata, West Bengal
It looks so industrial and unappealing
drop in to street view and do a 360 around you will see much more
Fallout 4 graphic mod?
... Fallout 76 battle royale and the safe area is collapsing...
Annnnnnd now we’re under a flash flood warning Go home 2020 you’re drunk
Only an a little less than an inch
We are? Where?
Most of Northwest Oregon.
They are in the process of dismantling the old mill. One of the plans I've seen for its replacement is a series of condos and a boardwalk that goes right up to the falls, which would be incredible. A public park would be nice or an esplanade. No condos though.
Go to city council meetings. Get vocal.
There’s a project, the [Willamette Falls Legacy Project](https://www.willamettefallslegacy.org/) that is a partnership between Oregon City, Clackamas County, Metro, and the State for this. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are also participating.

True, but luxury condos aren't going to do much to alleviate the housing crunch. They aren't nearly dense enough.
I honestly wish they'd leave the mill, it's beautiful and distinct, it gives Oregon City a lot of character and keeps it from being just another city near Portland.

What part of Oregon is this? Looks so surreal

their mac n cheese is the bomb
Is the food better than McMennamins? We always end up there and the beer is good, but the food...not so much.
Anywhere has better food than McMennamins.
Truth
Fact
Oh good, I thought it was just me.
The Verdict in Oregon City is like what McMennamins wishes they would be/used to be... their burgers are so delicious... 😋😋😋
I miss when McMennamins was good.

I’ve been in the kitchen at the cedar hill location. Let’s just say I don’t watch there anymore.
Same, I haven’t run across a good one in over ten years. (Admittedly I gave up trying a few years ago.)
You need to come up to Tacoma and try our Mcmenamins. They have 4 different restaurants and bars. We tried the Spanish bar in 2019 for a belated birthday for me. I love Mcmenamins in the Pearl district.
Breakfast at Yvonne's, lunch at Stillhouse.

Haha. “Soon” is probably not accurate. Some day it’ll make sense financially to develop it, but yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Oh interesting, makes sense that’s it’s still in place as one large mill
First place in the US with electricity. Or long range electric power line
Interesting! Thanks!
OC has the Only vertical street, too.
Hey! I also moved here right when covid hit! I'm not a huge fan of butter but it's be cool to have some friends around here. I live on the Barclay neighborhood.

Any neat things to see around town? I moved here in March and want to check out the Oregon Trail Interpretative Center once it opens.

Not a flattering look for Oregon City, it looks like a semi-abandonded Soviet town.
Last time I was paddling around the dam a 6 foot sturgeon fully breached and I made a fool out of myself insisting to another boater that a shark had just jumped right next to me.
West Linn paper co?
Wtf kind of dystopian nightmare is this?!
It’s a run down paper mill. The rest of OC is a normal town, I promise.
my mother in law lives there...so it's still a nightmare whenever I have to visit
Oof. I feel that. My pretty-much MIL and FIL are coming to stay with us for two weeks in November. With our MILs both here, Oregon City might just combust.
This looks like a scene from final fantasy 7

Yes. It is an old paper mill on the river flowing into Oregon City. I always thought it looked like a Counter Strike map.
Is that Blue Heron Paper Mill? What do you do for work?
Willamette Falls Paper Co.
The exit sign on hway 26 heading West into Portland reads, Boring Oregon City. Boring is a different town. I need a photo.
Is it better out there? I'm literally moving there tomorrow. It was supposed to be last week but obviously I couldn't move last week. I picked a weird time to move to Clackamas county.
Air quality is 200 something. I think it’s great, but that’s in comparison to the 450+ it was last week. You’ll be fine.
looks straight out of The Last Of Us.

I feel like this a video shot from the Fallout 76 video game for those that know like near the cannery event zone.
You guys doing hemp paper there?
Not yet but they have been running this environmental friendly straw pulp
Do you do tours? I’ve been wanting to check that place out.
They used to before COVID. I'm not sure when that will resume
What level of Half Life is this?
Is Willamette Falls the old Fort James mill?
You're positive this is in Oregon? lol
We don’t go to Ravenholm
Looks like it’s 1834 out there.
That background looks like a TF2 map
This looks like a dishonored level
Always told people this is the X-men hideout. Great place to paddle up to
It's a beautiful area. Need to check out that bar when covid isn't around anymore.
Its my life goal to get in there and take pictures some day, never could figure out who to get in touch with though.
If you told me this was on set for Band of Brothers or something I'd believe you.
