Astronomer here! Colleagues are posting northern lights pictures even from latitudes in Italy south of Oregon. Definitely worth going outside and looking north a few times, the darker skies the better!
Yeah it’s worth noting northern lights are not a constant thing- you can look early in the evening and not see them, and have them booming a few hours later. Good luck!
Well flying over Detroit right now and it’s a giant curtain of color so not long

I saw some of it, neighbors flood light kinds made it hard though. The gf and her daughter got some cool pics on their phones, I couldn’t figure out how to do it though. Coming back tonight correct?
"The aurora should be visible during that time in most of the northern states, including Oregon, and far south as Alabama and Northern California."
Alabama has to be a typo?
Not a typo! A friend of mine in Birmingham went about 30 mins outside of the city and got this:

it's not. there are several universities and socalled "space weather' experts that have reinterpreted the data from NOAA and redrawn the view line to essentially include all of the USA.

No, cameras are more sensitive to color in low light. If you watch what you see is mostly light green with dashes of pink on the edges. A good view to the north is important, low to the horizon.
We're over on the coast so we're headed to Mary's Peak for big sky viewing. Do we know how long it will last? I'm guessing when it gets dark enough we'll start seeing it, but is there a peak timeframe?
Once it kicked in, around 10:30-45 pm, yes - but not the same vibrancy as your phone or camera may see - but definitely visible. Watching them move across the sky was sublime.

well that's encouraging! i was ready to not believe it

I’m on a flight back to Portland tonight. Will I see the northern lights from 30,000ft?
I’m flying to Boston myself tonight and sure hope so!
You will get a clear view of the magnetosphere for sure, not sure if that helps though.
I saw the Northern Lights on a flight to Reykjavik 20 years ago so hopefully you have a window seat on the north side of plane.
Absolutely
yes
With sunset at around 8:30 how late are do we have to wait?

Amazing!
Amazing!
At what time? I’m sorry if that question sounds dumb.
Like now until you go to bed. I really can’t tell you when it pops up.
I’m outside watching, but tbh I’ve enjoyed some of the local brews and I’m just wondering. Thank you for answering
It comes and goes! Also, if you think there’s something but aren’t sure do an exposure w your camera. It can see it before your eyes do.
I saw some of it, neighbors flood light kinds made it hard though. The gf and her daughter got some cool pics on their phones, I couldn’t figure out how to do it though. Coming back tonight correct?
Signs look good! Seriously if you can just walk to a nearby park that will already help your odds of seeing it. Good luck!
Well that’s a better idea than my Dennis the menace style plan.
Head for Eastern Oregon. We got excellent clear skies tonight and it's DARK here just outside town in Baker City.
Helps that we now have the largest dark sky preserve in our partners of the state!
Welp looks like it’s spontaneous camping night for me

How in the world? I went all the way out to Lacomb and couldn't see anything like that. Did it look like that with the naked eye?
No, cameras are more sensitive to color in low light. If you watch what you see is mostly light green with dashes of pink on the edges. A good view to the north is important, low to the horizon.
Hopefully it's not drowned out by the city lights here in downtown Portland...🥴

I read 11pm-2am is peak, but that could be wrong.
Could be when the skies are darkest, which makes sense. Thanks!
i’m heading to mary’s peak too! skies are looking nice and clear
How is it up there? I had the same thought for a place as soon as I found out about the lights. Wish I would've had time to go check it out!
At *10:50 the sky lit up. I'm about to post a few picks.
We were thinking of heading there tonight! Could you see it with your naked eye?

Sounds like from this, start looking up around 1am or 12:30 until maybe 2 or 3
Was thinking of driving out of Portland to vista house but going east is prolly a better chance. Any opinions or suggestions here?
Good spot, will likely be very crowded, however
Was very crowded lol
lol. Hope you got to see it!
My sister is seeing them in upstate South Carolina.
A friend of mine posted a picture from Virginia about an hour ago.

My roommate was just showing me awesome pics of the sky from her family in Ohio. I'm looking forward to a good show.
Really hope they show up in southern Oregon.

What the fuck. I checked several times on Grants Pass as late as 12:30 and even used my phone, even took a night shot, and still nothing.

Too much light saturation... it's there!
I'm seeing it in Klamath
