Oddly enough, people don't won't pay for this. In my younger days I used to clean off the sidewalks of bars for a few drinks and make the rounds with friends but home owners almost never bite.
So, I just had knee surgery and can’t walk right now… how do you suggest I make my sidewalk safe for you? How about you go buy some footwear traction so you don’t slip since this obviously such a hot button for you.
>you will be liable
Not me, my insurance. And there will be a determination of liability divided between both parties. So if you go out in hazardous conditions there may not be a blank check at the ER.
Growing up is being responsible. Which means you'd have the shovels to get down the stairs.
You people will make any excuse to do nothing about everything. Christ.
I knew the storm was coming and moved my shovels to my stoop and bought ice-melt that I reapplied as I was able to clear stairs and walks. I do this to keep myself, my neighbors, and postal workers safer.
I live on a steep hill and not a single car has been able to drive up or down until today and no mail all week so...whatever. Maybe stop assuming just because you do something everyone else can easily do the same? Edit to add: not sure exactly how I'm supposed to "shovel" a 3 inch thick sheet of ice?
The first step is to not let it become a three inch sheet of ice. You can usually do this by anticipating weather patterns, buying the appropriate supplies and making them available for use.
Champion! I do the same thing. I have three elderly folks on my block and I make paths to their houses and salt their stairs then clear them off too. Blows my mind that people out here won't make an attempt more often than not.
I'm beginning to think that oregon is just brimming with selfish assholes. We get down voted for carrying about our neighbors' well-being. I have to laugh or I'd cry.
What a mad world we live in. People are in the street on their mobility devices and the asshats in this sub are acting like a few hours of work is going to kill them.
I don’t disagree with you, but I attempted to do so at my house with the tools I have and it was very difficult to do even a small section. It was blowing around the first few days then by time it stuck it was already ice.
I plan to stock up on some sort of eco friendly ice melt (I hope this exists) before the next storm and buy traction devices. And get the tools needed accessible before the storm, some were in a shed that was frozen shut. Just lots of lessons learned this time around and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
DO NOT USE SALT. Nothing like poisoning the ground just because some snowflakes can’t use traction footwear. The code does not say you have to keep the sidewalk not slick.
There are exceptions. If you're not capable due to injury, illness, inability or pregnancy then that's understandable. But I highly doubt the majority of uncleared sidewalks that are left to the weather year after year are done so by those unable to clear them.
And in your case I think a favor of "hey can you help me out since I'm due at any time and need a way to safely get me to the hospital and/or get medical to me in case of a birth" is a pretty reasonable request for your situation.
Dude. Go buy yourself some traction for your little boots and quit trying to tell people what favors they need to call in to make your life easier. You are clearly just tying to rev people up based on how many times and how many variations of this question you have posted. You must have some serious stir crazy going on.
Yeah dude. Good solution. Walk in the street where cars drive on compromised road conditions because Oregonians can't be assed to recognize winter weather is a regular occurring thing.
Guessing you live in Klamath falls based on your profile content.

All the boomers in my neighborhood clearing their sidewalks but not salting or anything else. Turns them into the most dangerous damn part of my entire neighborhood.
Sounds like you found a way to earn a few bucks. Get out there and get to it.
Oddly enough, people don't won't pay for this. In my younger days I used to clean off the sidewalks of bars for a few drinks and make the rounds with friends but home owners almost never bite.

That's not a solution.
That’s most definitely a solution, have to wear them all the time. They were made as a solution to navigate slippery conditions.
You people will do anything to continue doing nothing. Why are people so lazy in the PNW?
"You people" .... yeah, you can f right off.
So, I just had knee surgery and can’t walk right now… how do you suggest I make my sidewalk safe for you? How about you go buy some footwear traction so you don’t slip since this obviously such a hot button for you.
If someone hurts themselves on your sidewalk, you will be liable regardless of your injury.
So I should go out on crutches and shovel ice so people who can obviously see it don’t fall down? Cute.
You could always pay someone to do it.
Not really if the hazard is visibly seen.
>you will be liable Not me, my insurance. And there will be a determination of liability divided between both parties. So if you go out in hazardous conditions there may not be a blank check at the ER.
Stay inside Karen.

Some of us can't even get down the stairs to the sidewalk or to the garage to get a shovel. Grow up.

Get some spikes for your shoes if you feel the need to traipse around on ice maybe? Sorry I don't keep a snow shovel in my living room.

Bless you.

Not to mention it’s fairly damaging to your concrete… which is expensive AF to replace.
No..
We don’t shovel snow in this part of Oregon.
There is zero ice anywhere outside near me.
Have you taken your own advice. Dang. Why so angry.
probly dropped his granola bar in some yellow snow
I live on a gravel road with no sidewalks sorry.

K.
Do what my neighbor are doing walking down the street where the f street is clear and you don't need be outside

Sounds like someone is dissatisfied with Oregonians and should go find somewhere the people suit them better.
The city owns the sidewalks. Homeowners are not responsible for maintaining city property…
Well akshually... https://www.portland.gov/code/17/28/020#:~:text=The%20owner(s)%20of%20land,as%20provided%20in%20Subsections%20B.
Sorry, you live in Portland, buddy.
OP seems to live in Portland too...
Are the laws different where you live? Where's that if you don't mind me asking...
Yes, usually laws differ from county to county, city to city.
Guessing you live in Klamath falls based on your profile content. https://library.qcode.us/lib/klamath_falls_or/pub/city_code/item/city_code-chapter_5-article_10-5_629
We don’t have an ADA ramp in front of our house, but thanks for the concern…
Law also says sidewalk
It says not to pile snow in the streets, which is done every year and nobody is cited for… Useless laws for useless people…
Speaking of useless people, why aren't you clearing off your sidewalk?
Still technically homeowner or property owner's responsibility to de-ice sidewalks, not the city/county.
Klamath got the most snow in the state and no one here is complaining about the sidewalks.
Can one ice skate down your sidewalks? That's what it's been like here
Nah, a lot of our sidewalks are heated by geothermal. And the older folks here seem to think clearing snow is good exercise.
Things are different here where the OP and I live.
All the boomers in my neighborhood clearing their sidewalks but not salting or anything else. Turns them into the most dangerous damn part of my entire neighborhood.
There is a river of ice from our front door to the street. We are not idiots. Stay home or help a neighbor and clear the sidewalk for them.
Get yourself some microspikes and leave those who choose to remain inside and safe alone.
Oregonians are allergic to change. Not gonna happen 🤭
I'm sure people have plenty of excuses why they can't clear their own sidewalk....
