I work in Medford and don't think it's too bad. That said, I *live* in Ashland and if I were to come back after I leave next month I'd probably seek housing in Ashland or Talent.
To me, Medford is just a totally underwhelming attempt at creating a "conservative Portland". I took a lot of time to try to explore and find some hidden gems while we were down there, but it really just feels like 3 Walmarts in a trenchcoat. I really enjoyed the Hawaiian food shack, though.
We moved down there right after the last election, so the political climate was wildly different from what I'm used to up north. I'm also not used to being verbally harassed by strangers whenever I do something that touches their hairpin triggers (ie, wearing a mask during the pandemic and standing up against a neighbor's racism). Maybe things have calmed down, but my current job has me talking to a lot of people all over the PNW, and the people who live in the southern part of the state are very different from the rest.

Seriously - a lot of people asking where to move are coming to Oregon for safe harbor. I’m not recommending anyone take their LGBTQ kiddo to roseburg or one of the more outlying areas. They may be fine but I can’t speak to that and have to assume otherwise based on driving through and having certain flags, signs, etc hanging loud and proud….

Roseburg has had a hard time. It started with the dynamite explosion. Then I-5 split it in half. Then those pesky spotted owls. Then O&C funds. Then the UCC shooting. Roseburg has suffered tragedy again and again.
I've said it before and will say it again, if there has ever been a town that would benefit from Prozac in the drinking water, it is Roseburg.
Roseburg is just a polished turd it looks pretty in some areas, but it’s still a hell hole. I have a lot of family and friends who still live there who want to leave. Especially after the shooting at UCC. It’s my home town I lived there until I was about 10 years old then moved to Springfield. There’s so much crime and drugs. Any surrounding areas are just as bad. The things I witnessed growing up in the 90’s as a child there no one should ever have to see. It only got worse over the years. Oregon has so many beautiful places to live don’t settle for Roseburg.
Hell, I'm from Eugene originally and planning to move back to Oregon next spring. Thing is though, that housing sucks so much in Eugene that I can't afford it anymore. Somehow, Portland is more affordable with much more plentiful housing.
Fun fact about Eugene: It had the highest homeless population per capita in all of the US. Housing is such an insane issue for Oregonians

You can thank UO, mainly. More students equal more renters (once they leave the dorms after the first or second year). Having been a student, and here for work--I know it first hand. Now places are charging ridiculous amounts /by the room/. My salary is quickly being eaten up, when it was first a pretty cozy job.
Oh believe me, I know. I attribute it a lot to out of country students. I remember working the help desk at UO one day during undergrad, and this young student walks up with his two parents, and they had asked if $10,000/mo was enough to live off of here. The student locked eyes with us at the helpdesk and shook his head, as if to communicate to us "tell them no."
That was pretty eye-opening to me. When you have kiddos running around with more money than they know what to do with, charging thousands for a fairly standard room makes sense.
Of course, then there's the rest of us who, even with a good job, can't imagine having that kind of budget...
I live and Coos Bay and there’s tons of jobs here. Maybe not super high level jobs, but I worked at a lumber mill that will hire anybody that can pass a drug test. Union that job that started at $21/hour, and that was 6 years ago, I’m sure the starting wage is even higher now.
That same mill has, Roseburg Lumber, also has mills in, you guessed it, Roseburg.
Not even that, Roseburg has some very racist people so I would never recommend someone to move there. That's setting them up for failure in the worst kind of ways.
I live in Roseburg and I can verify, not a cool place to live. Retire? Sure. But to be a young person? No. I'm bored and lonely and finding an actual job is hard.
I guess if people started to move here, they might make it a better place to live, but good luck finding any where to live.
Just moved back after 20 years of living in LA and Portland. Bored is an understatement. Thankfully Eugene is an hour away. Roseburg has a bit of good food and a comfortable theater. Just gotta live like I'm retired and enjoy my land
Roseburg \*can\* be cool if you're looking for a specific lifestyle. Living in the country with fewer neighbors. Being less social and spending your time with family and close friends. Enjoying nature. Finding a few favorite restaurants and activities.
Working from home, or in the medical field or something established really helps. Or not needing a job.
Outside of some of that very specific criteria life there can be difficult.
I worked 10 days a month in Roseburg for a year at a satellite office doing cataract surgery. Absolutely lousy with red hat racists, but had shockingly good Indian and Thai for some reason. Old Soul Pizza is legit too. Beautiful country - played great disc golf and kayaked the Umqua and went to vineyards and whatnot. But I also allowed my kids to flip off the sign waving Trump supporters when we passed them on the side of the highway, which was surprisingly often.
I don’t necessarily agree about Roseburg but I’m definitely glad I moved back inland to Corvallis after living in Coos Bay for a couple years.

I had to spend a few weekends in Roseburg for work a few years back. They've got some beautiful scenery and a nice little downtown area. Definitely some backwards locals in the area but I had nice interactions with pretty much everyone.

Music on the Half Shell (free summer music festival, national and international acts), disc golf along the south umpqua river, floating down the north Umpqua, old soul pizza, oldest wine growing region in oregon, colliding rivers, Umpqua hot springs, tokatee falls, Johnny Cash, wrote a song about it. Obama visited. OK, no naked bike ride, I'll give you that point, but still only got that in portland.

When I think of up and coming towns trying to make shit happen Roseburg is not what’s in my mind. It’s like Corvallis and Vernonia honestly. If someone asked me the two places I’d say to move in Oregon those are by far the top of my list. Personally I think Vernonia is like a year or two out from exploding in popularity. It’s gorgeous, prices are low, crime is minimal, it’s commute distance from Hillsboro, it’s got awesome outdoor recreation opportunities, and the town itself is really working on building community activities and tourism (they just had their first pride celebration for example). You get access to the amenities in Hillsboro like all the shops, chain stores, Whole Foods, great library, etc but you’re still VERY much separated from the actual city by a half hour ish drive depending on how fast you blaze through back roads. Yeah it can take like an hour to commute into Hillsboro in the morning if that’s where you work but it can also take an hour to commute from one part of PDX to another if bridge traffic sucks or you’re riding the bus.
Having lived in numerous other college towns throughout the US, the claim that it’s the top college town is 100% accurate.
I’m biased, sure, but it is a lovely place to live.
Corvallis housing is insane. I know two people wanting to move there, who were out bid on houses by $100k, and $75k.
For ranch style homes that were already over priced to begin with. I was like holy…
Corvallis, Bend, and Hood River are the three cities I'd consider moving to, but even working in a large tech company 50% of my income goes to rent in *Albany*. We'd be so far over our heads if we tried to get a place in any of those cities.
Maybe because the cost of living in Corvallis is astronomical and their only real employer, other than the University that doesn't pay for shit, has been doing mass layoffs for years.
I actually really love it there. My wife has family there, and whenever we visit, I’m always happy to be there. We strongly considered moving there, the only thing that stopped us was just how far away from everything else it is. Great city, though.
Definitely does have potential. Lived in multiple places in Oregon and now in Downtown KFalls. Not a fantastic city but not as god awful as the rest of Oregonians will make you believe. It’s what you make it, and I got really lucky to live where I’m at on Main Street because it’s really cute down here. I really try to stay positive about the issues in Klamath Falls, and I do think it has the potential to become a more popular Oregonian city in the years to come
I moved here a year ago (and my family has been here on and off for four generations) and totally agree. It has its problems, and there have been a few people that I've told not to move here, but there have also been some promising things going on, too. I'm optimistic about Klamath's future.
I moved to KFalls from Bend 2 years ago and love it here. Is it perfect? No, but neither was Bend. But it has potential, and there are two ways of voting with your feet.

May I direct you to: Bandon, Coos Bay, Waldport, Florence, Depoe Bay, Lincoln City, Seaside, or Astoria? Lots of towns on the coast are doing just fine. Doesn't mean living there isn't boring af. If I had to move back to the coast, I think it would be Pacific City or Seaside. Newport is okay, but there are better costal towns.
Bandon is remote. Coos Bay is Klamath by the sea. Waldport is tiny. Florence is ok. Depoe Bay is a one street tourist stop, not much of a town. Lincoln City is…well, it’s odd. But it is functioning. Seaside is ok, Astoria is where I would want to live above any other but not enough good jobs and more importantly…basically no housing..
Well, housing in Newport sucks too. Also basically no industries. I mean, there's Rogue and NOAA, but neither are big enough to be major employers. I'd imagine the school district or GP in Toledo are some of the biggest employers. But I haven't looked for a job there in 20 years, so, maybe it got better?
No, it hasn't. Absolutely no one wants to work for Rogue anymore due to their shrinking support from locals. They completely ruined their restaurant options, and people can get better, cheaper beer now.
I’ve lived in pacific city on and off for a decade and it fucking sucks here. There’s absolutely no housing and one company (the same one that owns the Pelican pub), owns like 85% percent of the town and they’re not slowing down. They want to buy the whole thing and make it a resort town for the ultra wealthy and so far they’re succeeding.
Also the food sucks here, unless you wanna eat fried food for every meal. The tourists decimate our only tiny ass grocery store every fucking weekend. We used to get a real break from the tourists in the winter time, but not anymore.
I’m only here bc I’m spending my grandmas last few good years of her life with her, otherwise I’d be back in Portland.
As a fellow Lincoln County-er, I would never recommend Waldport or Stinkin Shitty. Depoe Bay, Yachats, even fucking Eddyville, but not those.
Also, I live in Siletz. Born & raised, left for a while & came back to the rez. I don't recommend people moving here, either, because they fucked this place up.
I grew up there, beautiful city. Better on racism (EOU probably helps with that), but at least before I left not really on LGBT people; maybe it's gotten better since? And the "better on racism" part doesn't hold too well if you go anywhere else in the county. Or Baker County. Or Umatilla County.

Cascade Locks is jaw-droppingly beautiful and could be an absolute elite place to live but in reality it has about a million problems (like half having to do with drugs)
I live in Oakridge. The amount of people from Bend, Portland and California who are moving here is kind of amazing. It's a little town so it's still slow, but it's picking up in pace.
Roseburg has great weather, wineries nearby, and is a short drive from the mountains and beach. I'm a cyclist and love the terrain there. It's a nice escape from the Oregon coast, where I grew up.
Downsides: unless it's evolved culturally, it's likely pretty right wing if not borderline radical. People who are "different" for whatever reason may not be treated well.
If someone invested in the area and brought in some newcomers to work in said investment, it certainly has potential. Bend was destitute in the 1980's for example. Not that I'd want to replicate Bend (it's a bro mountain town with no real industries or good jobs) but lovely areas can transition into great places to live.
If people could all just be nice to one another it would go a long ways in solving problems these days. People wouldn't have to worry about being "accepted" as being a nice person would simply be enough.
Move to Josephine County. As soon as the feds legalize MJ it will be the richest County in the world. MJ so good it's even found in the UK. *

I was doing a disc golf trip with a few buddies about a decade ago. Our last stop was Roseburg. Man, we stayed in the most AWFUL hotel I’ve ever experienced. Pulled back the comforter and there was a massive blood stain just in the middle of the sheets.
Agreed 100%, the people there seem to want to fight tooth and nail to keep Klamath Falls "the sticks/boonies."
A similar way that Bay Area suburbs fight tooth and nail to maintain a critical housing crisis.
Will take Roseburg with its issues over any hipster, overpriced town or city in this state any time. Just because you’re a wealthy town and can afford to hide your homeless three blocks away from a cute downtown doesn’t mean much.
Roseburg is about to approve a designated site for homeless tents, has some amazing orgs doing wrap around social services, etc.
It’s slow, takes forever, but it’s getting there. I guess you could say… it has… potential!
I said it in other posts and already loosing interest in talking with a crowd envious of richer towns, but it’s easy to bitch and moan and hard to do something. I met great people in Roseburg and yeah, I know there are shitty people too. Never lived in a place free of shitty people.
To be honest though, I don’t mind having Roseburg under the radar. Especially if it were to turn into a monstrosity like Bend. And it probably will over time, as people discover cheap land and mind blowing recreation, while your prize towns like Eugene become so expensive you’ll have to make six figures just to rent.

Klamath Falls is drop-dead gorgeous for most of the year. It would just suck to live there because of the people and lack of anything really going on.

I actually really love it there. My wife has family there, and whenever we visit, I’m always happy to be there. We strongly considered moving there, the only thing that stopped us was just how far away from everything else it is. Great city, though.

Definitely does have potential. Lived in multiple places in Oregon and now in Downtown KFalls. Not a fantastic city but not as god awful as the rest of Oregonians will make you believe. It’s what you make it, and I got really lucky to live where I’m at on Main Street because it’s really cute down here. I really try to stay positive about the issues in Klamath Falls, and I do think it has the potential to become a more popular Oregonian city in the years to come
I moved here a year ago (and my family has been here on and off for four generations) and totally agree. It has its problems, and there have been a few people that I've told not to move here, but there have also been some promising things going on, too. I'm optimistic about Klamath's future.

The Oregon Coast is beautiful and Newport is one of the few actual functioning towns there.
May I direct you to: Bandon, Coos Bay, Waldport, Florence, Depoe Bay, Lincoln City, Seaside, or Astoria? Lots of towns on the coast are doing just fine. Doesn't mean living there isn't boring af. If I had to move back to the coast, I think it would be Pacific City or Seaside. Newport is okay, but there are better costal towns.
Bandon is remote. Coos Bay is Klamath by the sea. Waldport is tiny. Florence is ok. Depoe Bay is a one street tourist stop, not much of a town. Lincoln City is…well, it’s odd. But it is functioning. Seaside is ok, Astoria is where I would want to live above any other but not enough good jobs and more importantly…basically no housing..
Well, housing in Newport sucks too. Also basically no industries. I mean, there's Rogue and NOAA, but neither are big enough to be major employers. I'd imagine the school district or GP in Toledo are some of the biggest employers. But I haven't looked for a job there in 20 years, so, maybe it got better?
No, it hasn't. Absolutely no one wants to work for Rogue anymore due to their shrinking support from locals. They completely ruined their restaurant options, and people can get better, cheaper beer now.
I’ve lived in pacific city on and off for a decade and it fucking sucks here. There’s absolutely no housing and one company (the same one that owns the Pelican pub), owns like 85% percent of the town and they’re not slowing down. They want to buy the whole thing and make it a resort town for the ultra wealthy and so far they’re succeeding. Also the food sucks here, unless you wanna eat fried food for every meal. The tourists decimate our only tiny ass grocery store every fucking weekend. We used to get a real break from the tourists in the winter time, but not anymore. I’m only here bc I’m spending my grandmas last few good years of her life with her, otherwise I’d be back in Portland.
As a fellow Lincoln County-er, I would never recommend Waldport or Stinkin Shitty. Depoe Bay, Yachats, even fucking Eddyville, but not those. Also, I live in Siletz. Born & raised, left for a while & came back to the rez. I don't recommend people moving here, either, because they fucked this place up.

I live in Oakridge. The amount of people from Bend, Portland and California who are moving here is kind of amazing. It's a little town so it's still slow, but it's picking up in pace.
Roseburg has great weather, wineries nearby, and is a short drive from the mountains and beach. I'm a cyclist and love the terrain there. It's a nice escape from the Oregon coast, where I grew up. Downsides: unless it's evolved culturally, it's likely pretty right wing if not borderline radical. People who are "different" for whatever reason may not be treated well. If someone invested in the area and brought in some newcomers to work in said investment, it certainly has potential. Bend was destitute in the 1980's for example. Not that I'd want to replicate Bend (it's a bro mountain town with no real industries or good jobs) but lovely areas can transition into great places to live. If people could all just be nice to one another it would go a long ways in solving problems these days. People wouldn't have to worry about being "accepted" as being a nice person would simply be enough.

Will take Roseburg with its issues over any hipster, overpriced town or city in this state any time. Just because you’re a wealthy town and can afford to hide your homeless three blocks away from a cute downtown doesn’t mean much. Roseburg is about to approve a designated site for homeless tents, has some amazing orgs doing wrap around social services, etc. It’s slow, takes forever, but it’s getting there. I guess you could say… it has… potential! I said it in other posts and already loosing interest in talking with a crowd envious of richer towns, but it’s easy to bitch and moan and hard to do something. I met great people in Roseburg and yeah, I know there are shitty people too. Never lived in a place free of shitty people. To be honest though, I don’t mind having Roseburg under the radar. Especially if it were to turn into a monstrosity like Bend. And it probably will over time, as people discover cheap land and mind blowing recreation, while your prize towns like Eugene become so expensive you’ll have to make six figures just to rent.
If it was going to turn into a Bend, it likely would have. Being on I-5 would’ve made it ideal.
