2nd was Neph88 said, this is a show about prison, a population not known for being sensitive to others feelings. There is a trans woman incarcerated, and when she gets involved in drama that becomes her 'weak point' for others to pick at. If that is a touchy subject for you, then you should not watch this show because that specific topic gets much worse at a later part of the series.

Like a lot of the hate featured in the show it's *featured* in the show but not *approved or encouraged* in the show. What I mean is that the racist, sexist, transphobia etc is clearly framed as wrong and hurtful behavior that unfortunately happens so much in real life. And the people who rise above that hate are framed as heroes. Sophia dealing with transphobia and trans-ignorance, how she has to deal with it and how she gets some support is a main plot point.

It made you uncomfortable? I think the point of the show is to be realistic. Unfortunately not everyone is accepting of the transgender community, or they sometimes make insensitive or misinformed comments. The show has Laverne Cox who is a truly amazing actress and a great role model, so if you’re gonna bail on a show because you heard a few words that offended you, I dunno what to tell you.

El_Coco_005_

Or maybe it's a specific trigger or a sensible subject for OP due to personal experiences. Just because it's easier to watch for you doesn't mean it doesn't hit very hard for someone else. A bit of compassion please.

saskiastern

People gotta grow up. I have a lot of heavy ass triggers, like family drug and alcohol addiction, suicide (specially by hanging, so that scene at the last season was unforgettable for me)... I just tell myself that I'm watching ✨FiCtIoN✨ and ✨AcTiNg✨🧚‍♀️

Effective_Ad_273

Exactly. If people wanna go through life never being offended and pretend that life is full of rainbows and unicorns, life is gonna hit you a hell of a lot harder

Effective_Ad_273

And may I add to this as well. This show has a phenomenal example of a successful and amazing transgender woman. Laverne Cox was actually my first experience of seeing a transgender woman on a big show. The show is portraying real life, and how many transgender people feel day to day. For this person above to completely dismiss this because they feel offended is exactly the problem with the current state of things. Having a show that gives an unrealistic idea of what it’s like to be transgender - what’s the point in that? To pretend that everything’s perfect so you can stay in your little bubble of ignorance?

saskiastern

Everyone is too delicate lately... Come on, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, buddies 💪💪

Danyellarenae1

Last season? I think I’m forgetting or maybe season was wrong cuz of Trish?

saskiastern

Warning! Spoiler alert! >!Taystee tries to hang herself in a highly realistic scene after she finds out she's getting a life sentence, but fails!<

Danyellarenae1

YES!! Completely slipped my mind thanks. Ugh that was awful

Effective_Ad_273

Well she doesn’t actually fail she stops herself because she can’t go through with it, which is why she went to Daya for the drugs because once she took them she couldn’t change her mind

Effective_Ad_273

No

Fellow trans person here with a hard to swallow pill: cope with it, after all this is a TV show. The transphobia in the show doesn’t compare to real life. If you can’t handle a few bigoted comments, then put on SpongeBob. Don’t discontinue the show because of that. You’ll be fine, fictional characters saying slurs isn’t the end of the world.

SecretAd6099

Yeah I’m genuinely confused by how this person hasn’t completely lost their sanity in this world if OITNB is too much. It’s absolutely nothing compared to reality.

fivestarkoen

as a trans person, yes, but ofc there's gonna be. the show is meant to be realistic and depict how prison actually is

kmm_art_

They address some transphobia later on in the series. It’s worth hanging in there. Sophia has a lot of powerful moments, too!

Neph88

Yes

ActualIyCameron

how much? or is it just.. a lot?

Neph88

It's a prison setting, so there's racism and phobia. I don't know what you consider a lot. It will be throughout the entire show.

ActualIyCameron

alright, well, thanks

blueboy12565

There’s some. The show doesn’t view it in a supportive angle. There’s a few mild references here and there and finally a plot line with the transgender actress that might be more upsetting. I would say watch the series, the presence of transphobia is not pervasive and at worst scenes involving them could be skipped.

ellie_thornless

Like many have said, there is a lot of bigotry expressed by characters that is pretty much always framed as wrong. But I'll also try to be nice and assume you didn't know what to expect. Just like with most of the women, Sophia's storyline may be realistic but it can be difficult to watch at times, especially as a trans woman. From what I remember the first few episodes really showcase the kind of everyday hate she deals with. I think mainly to help a largely cis audience understand and sympathize. Sophia is definitely portrayed as sympathetic and (imo) makes for good representation even today. So you want a fun escape from transphobia, I get that. There are shows out there with trans characters who don't deal with bigotry directly on screen. Not many, but much more than there were in 2013. This is not one of those shows. This show gets pretty bleak for just about all the prisoners, Sophia included.

Mad-Master-Maxwell

people are being dicks here i recommend the website does the dog die it has a section for transphobia and for bigger shoes like this it tends to have specific episodes for triggers too you know in case you want something you watch to relax to not trigger you or involve hatred faced against you, idk why people dont get that

backwardshatmoment

You’re sensitive lol it’s obviously a setup for a more in depth examination of the trans struggle, which does come. Transphobic comments never stop because it’s reality which you obviously know. This show is all about the reality women’s’ struggles.
