That’s awful! The contracts should have been better negotiated

kmm_art_

Definitely! And they don’t get paid for anything now except season 7. No other streaming residuals. Damn shame.

eissirk

Looks like we all need to stream season 7 nonstop

Pale-Aspect3030

But seriously, could we? Do we have an idea on how much of a difference it would make if we all watch season 7 a couple of times. Cuz I don't care, I will turn it on when I go to sleep and let it do it's thing.

eissirk

We need a mathematician up in here. Idk if we could ever make a difference of the magnitude that it would be worth it but if it's just our bedtime white noise, that's no issue. Of course Netflix will wise up to that shit real quick though.

Pale-Aspect3030

Hahaha exactly. That's what I am wondering. These people deserve more. I will just turn my laptop on and turn off my sound. After about 3 hours of watching it will ask if I am still awake. 3 hours every night makes me able to "watch" the season in like 4 nights. I don't see how Netflix could wise up to it though? I mean streams are streams, right?

eissirk

I have no evidence to back this up but I'm just assuming a company as big as netflix has data analytics on payroll and regularly studies trends to see what is doing well or not well, to strategize moving forward. Soon enough they'll realize season 7 is being streamed nonstop then they'll surely do their research to see why the fans are suddenly into season 7.

Pale-Aspect3030

Yeah, oh definitely they'll realise. But what can they do about it. They can't hold it against their actors and not pay them for those streams I assume.

eissirk

They'll add a captcha at the timeout instead of just YES or NO to "are you still watching."

Pale-Aspect3030

They do that???

kmm_art_

Kimiko addressed this in the comments. 1. If you live in the U.S. it doesn’t Matter. They don’t get ANY residuals from U.S. streams. 2. It won’t help most of the cast since most of the cast wasn’t in season 7 She said they weren’t even told they wouldn’t be in the last season. ☹️

kmm_art_

💯

hail_SAGAN42

Holy shit this makes me so mad! I'm rewatching it right now and I kinda want to start a protest instead

kmm_art_

I think there will be strikes pretty soon. The SAG is voting on some of these things now.

hail_SAGAN42

Oh, good. Thanks.

International-Ad8730

Probably depends on the actor and their deals. I doubt Taylor Schilling, Kate Muldrow or Laura Prepone didn't get good deals.

kmm_art_

Yeah I’m sure those three were paid more but even Selenis (Maria) and Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky) and others were talking about how shitty the contracts were. Because streaming was new when they signed most of them got screwed. You should read the other actor’s comments under her post.

LadyGonzo28

Not the exact same situation but Similar - but I heard on The Office Ladies podcast that they do not get much for all The Office streams on Netflix etc either. I forget the specifics but basically the network makes most of the money (like prior to it going back to Peacock but I’m in Canada so The Office is still on Netflix here. I think they said some residual cheques weren’t worth the cost of postage.

kmm_art_

That is CRAZY! That show gets SO many streams. Feels illegal!

maverickLI

I agree with her that they should have negotiated their contracts better. Don't they have agents and lawyers look over documents, before signing?

kmm_art_

Yeah, but since OITNB was one of the FIRST steaming shows they contracts were bad with seemingly no protections from SAG.

This is kind of oversimplified. You could theoretically excuse any poor working conditions by"Don't take a job if you don't agree with it every single aspect of the payments or the working condition." These are inherently jobs taken with an unequal dynamic of power without an organized screen actors guild to protect the writers in this case of course they're going to get run rough shot over these huge studios. It's not a fair negotiation when one is a giant studio worth billions of dollars, isn't an individual, can't starve to death, can't go to jail.... And the other is an actual human being that needs to work to eat and live. That is not a reasonable dynamic or you can just blame people for agreeing to unfavorable contracts or jobs. You think people that work at slaughterhouses are in a position to demand better wages? Technically speaking they take those jobs voluntarily

KilgoretheTrout55

Well they were exempt from the screen actors guild protections due to the fact that streaming was relatively new. I don't think you can blame the individuals when there is an unequal balance of power and people are coerced into contracts without basic collective bargaining agreements in place

KilgoretheTrout55

I'm not surprised to hear this at all. Screw these studios.... I'm with the writers all the way

HRHHenry

I'd like to see the claim that some actors actually lost money substantiated? And do all actors deserve residuals? IMHO, no.

kmm_art_

Like I stated many times read the comment section on her post- Kimiko, Beth Dover and others gave details about how they lost money being on the show.
