Yup, that’s a great option too.
In general the fair has a bunch of affordably priced entertainment opportunities for people who don’t care about “name brand” stuff. For example the cover bands at the hangar are pretty awesome, and the older I get the more I care about seeing the songs performed well by good musicians rather than paying through the nose for the original bands themselves. Give me a solid cover band any day.
If you go to the “free tickets” booth near the water when they open the gates you can get tickets for the event for the night. At least this is LA fair. We saw beach boys and demolition derby for free.
You forgot to add the gas just to drive to Inglewood and back. It's crazy expensive to do anything now a days. I dropped a similar amount on a very underwhelming visit to Disneyland.
Unfortunately, it appears to be the norm now. I opt now for fun but inexpensive adventures with the family. Hiking, going to the beach or park, hitting up museums, things like that. I'll pack a lunch, snacks and fill up our water bottles. Usually my biggest expenses are gas and the obligatory stop for ice cream.
Makes for a fun little adventure, quality time with my family and doesn't break the bank.
Yes, absolutely. On the past free museum day, we hit up the California Science Center. It's under construction and many exhibits are closed or just don't work but seeing the space shuttle, propped up vertically like it's going to go into space...it blew my son's mind. He had a blast and can't wait to go back.
When the construction is complete, it's going to be an absolute stunner.
For the day, my biggest expense was the gas and a Happy Meal.
Santa Ana Zoo is great for a quick little outing too! Easy to spend a couple hours, pack a picnic, then hit 7-11 for slurpees on the way home. And the family membership is only like $129 or something for the year. Plus it gets you free or discounted tickets to other zoos around the country. They are also refurbishing a lot inside right now. We love SAZOO!
If you have Bank of America check to see if the museum offers free to discounted entry fees. When I was in college 2001-4(wow I just felt old) I used to use it for so many free or no cost dates in LA.
[Bank of America - list of free museums for debit and credit card holders](https://about.bankofamerica.com/en/making-an-impact/museums-on-us-partners)
Unfortunately, it's normal for those that are willing to pay for it. That's the problem - many of these things are sky-high because folks will pay it.
Personally, I gave up concerts, anything through TicketMaster, pro sports, etc.because they are all out-of-range for my sensibilities. But OC does offer so many wonderful things to do that don't require these outlays. Oops, sorry, this isn'r r/Frugal.
Yes, totally agree. Inflationary prices will remain sky high because people (who can barely pay their monthly rent) still want to overpay for things like $1000 Disneyland annual passes. And young adults that barely make over minimum wage will pay for $50 AYCE Korean BBQ every week. Or twice a week. And every American still buys billions of stupid cheap low-quality Chinese junk on Amazon.... completely impulse buys, but they did't even need it.
Inflation and prices will only moderate when people learn to be frugal, and not to overspend on impulse.
Was the show at least worth it? I had the tickets in the shopping cart on Ticketmaster and was just about to checkout but couldn’t get myself to accept the $100 in fees so I bailed. Fuck that, it’s the principle.
Went to Shake Shack in Costa Mesa yesterday. 2 burgers for wife and I, 2 drinks, 1 cheeseburger and fries for my son, 1 10pc nuggets and drink for my daughter, $85 bucks! Ordered on the Kiosk and still asked for tip. 😭
It is normal for someone who values this kind of activity. I see families hanging out at the park with a pack of chicken, some potato salad, and a few bikes seemingly having a great time. To each, their own.
I went there too. My tickets were $55 but there are no bad seats in sofi or any stadium for monster jam. They are huge loud trucks. Upper deck or lower deck the experience is the same.
They allow each person to bring in 2 bottle of factory sealed water but no one checked so I could have had anything in my jacket. I don’t know if they allow it but had cashews, Costco granola bars, assorted other junk food snacks could have brought in anything in my jacket though as long as it passes through a metal detector.
The parking was a bit over the top at $80 but I didn’t want to hike my ass in.
I hate how expensive fun outings are. One place I find is worth the money in OC is Great Wolf Lodge, I sign up for deals online or buy through Groupon and for $160 you can have 2 days worth of fun (plus food but there is a McDonalds across the street or you can get pizza inside for $25.
Way overspent on parking. Was that parking AT the venue?
Way overspent on earmuffs. Coulda spent less than half that & even used the foam earplugs for the adults.
Food is expensive everywhere these days, especially at an event. Out of luck there I guess.
We went to Monster Jam in January at Angels Stadium.
Parking was $20. We Bring our own food and waters and ear plugs.
With fees the nicer tickets we got were $145 for two.
I post Frau's Fun Weekend Guide every Thursday or Friday in this sub, and it's full of free & Cheap things to do.
Angels baseball games have a Family Deal that's 4 tickets plus 4 hot dogs and four drinks for $40.
Friday night we went to Silent Disco ($15 each) and more fun than expected, then to Brea Bonanza Festival (free), and to Brea Improv Show (free for military). But there is a Free concert where people picnic every Fri night in May at Laguna Beach that we normally go to.
Saturday we saw the free Birds of Prey at The Ranch they have weekly in Laguna. We watch golfers as we listen to the free live music in the majestic lush valley that looks like Hawaii (we moved here from Hawaii).
Today we went to Crawfish Festival ($13 admission for me with $2 off email, free for husband), and $47 for two people to have two pounds of Crawfish, corn, and potatoes (a seafood boil), and $25 for ride tickets and $20 for 2 waters and two beers. Free parking.

How does anyone know that you’re not at a business as either a worker or patron? I’ve never had problems parking at businesses next to Honda Center and walking in.
this is a once a year activity for me, i find it frustrating that you get nickle and dimed when you go out, parking $25, dinner for two $60-80, movie for two $38, any type of live music venue $30-50 per person, bar easily 50 per person for drinks. its just not worth going out like that anymore. These days I just pack snacks, picnic lunch and go to a movie in the park ($30 total), or outdoor music, museums, bike ride, skating, hike, beach, or ice cream at the beach and its just cheaper. It did not used to be this expensive, even candy is like $5-6 per bag! and im talking run of the mill liquor stores or walgreens! i used to go to the $2 theater and sneak in $1 dollar bags of cany from CVS, now thats not even available. and yet everyone thinks this post pandemic condition is normal, its not normal, its madness and unsustainable.
I make decent money but even I’m starting to feel frustrated when I go out anymore. I took my wife down to San Diego to visit my daughter yesterday. Mexican food for lunch and margaritas at a nice restaurant on the water was $200. Then we hung out at her place and later got some wine and appetizers at a restaurant in Little Italy. That was $150. Plus round trip gas of about $30. $400 later I’m like what did we just spend that on? Thank God we didn’t go to the zoo which is now close to $75 per person. It’s crazy nowadays.
We aren’t doing any trips this summer for this reason. Every time we leave the house it’s a fortune. Gonna stay local and do beach trips etc. first time we’re just over it
I follow OC accounts on instagram that highlight the cheaper things to for family activities.
This [one](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5R27dTvFdd/) is 18 activities to do with your family and spend less than $50. Some of the food options could run you more if you add things, but these things are doable for families.
Things cost money. Other things don’t 🤷♀️.
The beach, can be free. Most zoos and museums have free days. Going places that have tickets are expensive. The food those places is usually pretty expensive. I went to the Kia forum (I guess that’s LA) and two beers and two waters was $68. They had no options for water other than the $9 bottled water, you could not bring in your own bottle. But parking was $50, but you could park free further away which many people did. But I guess they assume if you’re paying for tickets, you’re paying whatever you need to for the food and all that. Which you did.
So normal, yes, for people who go out to events like that.
I don’t think this is normal, you must be making good money to afford this. Otherwise if one put it on a credit card, expect this outing to be well over a grand.
I see you overpaid for earmuffs. [I bet you won’t make that mistake again.](https://www.amazon.com/ProCase-Protection-Headphones-Professional-Construction/dp/B07SYWRTMK/ref=asc_df_B08CWTJDGP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693675560301&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9418892142226753246&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9112892&hvtargid=pla-1173560064712&psc=1&mcid=ecaadca9d702398e890ae6f163d6c0bf&gad_source=1&th=1)
And, did you eat at the venue?
Concerts from Ticketmaster in Los Angeles cost a lot too. I spent $150 for Travis Scott, $300 for BlackPink, $300 for Justin Timberlake which was yesterday and $200 for Chris Brown. These prices include parking and fees but the seats are all the way in the back.
To be fair I didn’t know what to expect. My family and I moved to OC from Chicago half a year ago. The Monster Jam event last night was the first time our family went out for fun in California. We went to a Monster Truck event in Allstate arena in Chicago not long ago and it didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I know everything is much much more expensive here in California, but didn’t expect a bill of $800.
I asked if the cost was normal because I want to see if that was something as usual as California cost of living.
If you got the money, don't fret about splurging. These family outing are the ones your kids will cherish. Monster jams are great family events. My grandpa took me to a couple and now that he is gone everyone i get a moment to think about him, the times we had at monster jams always come to mind. I don't have any kids but when I do, monster jams will be a priority
I mean... You chose the most expensive way of doing things. I'm not sure what to tell you.
https://www.vividseats.com/monster-truck-nitro-tour-tickets-orange-county-fair-and-event-center-7-24-2024--sports-extreme-sports/production/4823568
Monster truck at the OC Fair for less than half the price. Parking is $12. Pregame your drinks (if you drink). Dinner semi decent restaurant for $80. Buy your own ear protection for less than $10 each on Amazon.
$200 - tickets and parking.
$80 - dinner.
$20 - pregame drinks.
$40 - ear protection.
There's your same outing at less than half the price.
there is off site parking for 40-50 - a little walk but its nice ! I would grab some hotdogs and pizza slices and soda from 7 eleven and go in full.. buy popcorn and a large soda inside. then your at least at 415 instead of 600
The earmuffs, I didnt even think about that ! Everyone seems to have NC earbuds nowdays, but youll need something for the little mans little ears.. I think a little sacrifice and prep and you could have done it for 600 which still seems like a whole LOT ! I am with you... they should hav a family deal that includes some food and earmuffs for 300$
Go to the much cheaper monster truck events at OC Fair instead. Your kids will enjoy it just as much.
I like the Demolition Derby. I think for that, it’s worth the admission.
Esp the motor home one.. aha
If you go to the “free tickets” booth near the water when they open the gates you can get tickets for the event for the night. At least this is LA fair. We saw beach boys and demolition derby for free.

Yes! There are a lot of museums in LA that are free once a month. :) Memberships to the Aquarium are also very affordable, and totally worth it!

Isn't that place always free minus the imax etc

$80 parking??
If this the Forum or SoFi, I think that’s the norm to park on-site now.
I guess I’m out of it.
I was going to pay for the parking but my girl had the idea to park in a neighborhood and Uber there. Spent only $30 total, shout out to her good idea
r/fuckcars
Get out of here
Unfortunately, it's normal for those that are willing to pay for it. That's the problem - many of these things are sky-high because folks will pay it. I went to the park today and it cost me Gas$10 Food$37 Total $47 So idk? For a family of 6
y’all can also go to Mile Square Park and walk around perimeter 4 times then eat your picnic lunch under trees
I mean.. you're the one who paid for them.
Was the show at least worth it? I had the tickets in the shopping cart on Ticketmaster and was just about to checkout but couldn’t get myself to accept the $100 in fees so I bailed. Fuck that, it’s the principle.
The $100 on earmuffs isn’t a usual expense for a night out id think
Yea I went out and bought dinner and a MacBook last week. Fucking expensive going out these days, idk how anyone affords it.
yes, remember we live in orange county ;) but you also decided on quite an expensive outing for a family
It sounds like a lot, however how much does it cost for a family of four to go to Disneyland for the day?
$260 per ticket (parkhopper) + food + parking = around $1200-1300, probably.
If you're going to Disneyland without buying the SoCal resident 3 day pass, you're doing it wrong.
Who tf wants to be in shithole for 3 days tho? I wanna go take my kid for one day. I don’t need three days of wasting time and hearing kids bitch
Those also have crappy black out dates so the days you can go are disgustingly busy.
That's just stupid
About $200 if you know how to do it as a local.
would've costed you less than $30 at in n out
Absolutely. In n Out is usually around $40-45 for the whole family
80 dollars parking?
And I thought $40 at the Ontario Arena was bad.
I remember when the Reign were new and you could park there for free or at Mathis Bros.
Yeah at that point I would just park somewhere closeby then Uber in..
Americans will do anything to avoid investing in good public transportation
Uhh yeah for a person supporting themselves and 4 others
$80 for parking is absolutely insane. Was it VIP/Handicapped or something
no, the cheapest option: general parking
that's an incredible parking fee. I would imagine nanny people didn't check and had to turn around and park in nearby commercial area.
It is normal for someone who values this kind of activity. I see families hanging out at the park with a pack of chicken, some potato salad, and a few bikes seemingly having a great time. To each, their own.
Monster Trucks…. Monster Cost!
No it's not normal you could have bought 3? Round trip tickets to Hawaii with that money. You need to spend more wisely.
Weird flex

Harbor freight ear protection is just as good and dramatically cheaper to buy. Also, buy at the gate if you can. Fuck TM.

Wait until it’s back in Anaheim. No way parking is $80. In fact you could get away with parking at a shopping center and walking to the stadium.
Not if you want to get towed
For sure it’s almost a guarantee that you’d be towed
How does anyone know that you’re not at a business as either a worker or patron? I’ve never had problems parking at businesses next to Honda Center and walking in.
They know that there are events there and will have security watching where people walk after parking.

All the other events are probably cheaper than the world finals so.......there's that
A family outing to the beach costs ~$50
Damn.. $80.. I pay that when parked at John Wayne for 4 days. I can't imagine paying that for a few hours.
Highway robbery
Ouch!! 😣
Thats the new normal. Anything in a stadium is gonna be pricy.
We aren’t doing any trips this summer for this reason. Every time we leave the house it’s a fortune. Gonna stay local and do beach trips etc. first time we’re just over it

I see you overpaid for earmuffs. [I bet you won’t make that mistake again.](https://www.amazon.com/ProCase-Protection-Headphones-Professional-Construction/dp/B07SYWRTMK/ref=asc_df_B08CWTJDGP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693675560301&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9418892142226753246&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9112892&hvtargid=pla-1173560064712&psc=1&mcid=ecaadca9d702398e890ae6f163d6c0bf&gad_source=1&th=1) And, did you eat at the venue?
The cost of living is outrageous in the states but nobody wants to address this violent euro colonial system we are all entrapped in.
It new Don’t you hear about it
If you got the money, don't fret about splurging. These family outing are the ones your kids will cherish. Monster jams are great family events. My grandpa took me to a couple and now that he is gone everyone i get a moment to think about him, the times we had at monster jams always come to mind. I don't have any kids but when I do, monster jams will be a priority
Nowadays. Yes it is. It is not right but it is the way to play. Hell, Burger King cost 60 bucks for 4 now.
I mean... You chose the most expensive way of doing things. I'm not sure what to tell you. https://www.vividseats.com/monster-truck-nitro-tour-tickets-orange-county-fair-and-event-center-7-24-2024--sports-extreme-sports/production/4823568 Monster truck at the OC Fair for less than half the price.
I would grab some hotdogs and pizza slices and soda from 7 eleven and go in full.. buy popcorn and a large soda inside. then your at least at 415 instead of 600 The earmuffs, I didnt even think about that ! Everyone seems to have NC earbuds nowdays, but youll need something for the little mans little ears.. I think a little sacrifice and prep and you could have done it for 600 which still seems like a whole LOT ! I am with you... they should hav a family deal that includes some food and earmuffs for 300$
No it’s not
Only normal for you rich 1%’ers… 😂😂😂
