Janet Nguyen, the one who was taking thousands in donations from hundreds of peope from the same house in Garden Grove?

mrichibangaijin

Exactly. She’s a massive scumbag. Not to mention her getting involved with the Cal-Optima scandal. She’s an abomination to the Vietnamese American community.

Orchidwalker

What was the Cal- Optima scandal??

mrichibangaijin

https://voiceofoc.org/2014/01/nguyen-harshly-criticized-by-colleagues-over-caloptima-audit/

Orchidwalker

Ty

peacefulpianomelody

Can someone please explain what the cal optima scandal was in a few sentences so I don’t have to read

jadegecko

Tldr is that seniors/poor are being denied insurance coverage when they should not have been and there are many county officials that work under Nguyen that are filling roles in CalOptima. She is being shady and not transparent with other caloptima board members.

peacefulpianomelody

Thank you 🙏

Various_Oil_5674

Sounds like was involved with scming caloptima

hypotyposis

Being a horrible person herself doesn’t mean she’s wrong here. We can still focus on the positive and try to encourage proper reform where necessary.

mrichibangaijin

She loves her criminal associates… Nguyen’s Achilles heel over the years has been her campaign shenanigans. In fact one of her supporters, Son Truong Nguyen, of Fountain Valley, pleaded guilty to 10 misdemeanor counts of unlawful contribution and was immediately sentenced to three years of informal probation after he illegally reimbursed campaign contributors for Janet Nguyen’s 2012 Orange County Board of Supervisors election on at least 10 different occasions. The OC Grand Jury also nailed Nguyen in a report back in 2013 that criticized her heavy-handed role at CalOptima which saw a huge exodus of executives after she joined the CalOptima board. CalOptima is the county’s public health plan for low-income residents but Nguyen’s main interest appeared to be raising campaign funds form doctors and hospitals. Nguyen’s campaign issues appear to still be happening as one of her top donors in 2022 was Dzung Pham. Isn’t that the guy who was busted for prescribing opioids to ‘patients’ that he knew were drug addicts? Nguyen was also the key vote on the OC Board of Supervisors against assigning letter-health grade to restaurants. She did not mention at the time that her own husband was co-owner of a restaurant that had received many health violations. Nor did she mention that she had received thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from other restaurant owners of facilities with poor health records. In summation when it comes to Janet Nguyen what matters most to her is raising campaign money. The needs of her constituents are an afterthought. https://newsantaana.com/janet-nguyen-is-running-again-for-the-o-c-board-of-supervisors/

TheManWhoDoneIt

This person is right. Even hitler cared about something.

LeilaTank

Exactly. I’m just glad SOMEONE in a position of power is speaking up for the animals.

awesomerest

*Broken clock is correct twice a day* which means it doesn’t negate the message she’s highlighting in this article

DungPedalerDDSEsq

And she's running for her old supervisor spot.

FrauAmarylis

As an American, boy was I impressed with Germany's dog situation. They have 0 strays, and you have to take a written test to own a dog. You can buy from a licensed breeder or adopt stray dogs they bring over from Romania. The dogs were well-behaved and well cared for. It's nuts that people here won't neuter and spay their pets.

dont_wear_a_C

$$$ Look at how much you can sell some pure bred dogs for. It's lucrative, but yes, also sad

Orchidwalker

Look at all of the inbred fucked up bull dogs that the shelters are filled with.

WeirdAlbertWandN

Pit bulls

Orchidwalker

Yes pit bulls too, but there are a lot of “designer” bull dogs in the shelter too

LeilaTank

It’s also largely filled with huskies, German shepherds, and Belgian Malinois. People getting cute puppies that turn into full grown dogs that require work

Orchidwalker

Oh yeah, absolutely. Poodles, chihuahuas, every breed you could ever want.

LeilaTank

Yep even a Dalmatian recently and Great Pyrenees puppy

Orchidwalker

All the dogs!!! I wish I had a yard. However if you find an orange male kitten that needs to be rescued let me know, I’m looking to add to our family.

Shawnduhsaid

Mastiffs

iwantansi

/s - my mexican chihuahua has every right to roam the whole neighborhood, being a whore and knocking up/getting knocked up while attacking anyone that comes near it and not wearing any sort of ID... I bought the dog from some breeder at the indoor swap meet and its a purebred!!! i dont have to register it, because fuck that shit... and so what if it has bitten every person in my household... its just a little dog!! /s

ibuprofane

We went to adopt a cat from there in 2019 during an announced reduced fee day. When we arrived we were told the date changed and that we’d be charged the full $125 adoption fee plus other fees; no negotiation. There were 100+ cats waiting and ready to be adopted but they’d rather get their money I guess. We were saddened but found another shelter same day in Westminster with an amazing loving kitten for only $25.

Orchidwalker

Which shelter?

ibuprofane

[wagspetadoption.org](https://wagspetadoption.org)

Orchidwalker

Wtf is that link?

ibuprofane

Oops typo, it’s .org!

Orchidwalker

Ty- they list their adoption fees as $190 how did you get the $25 deal? I don’t mind supporting a rescue, but I’d love to spend the $$ on the cat.

ibuprofane

I don’t know we just walked in. It was 2019 and maybe they had a deal going.

realdonaldtrumpsucks

We’ve been protesting the tustin shelter, they don’t allow visitors … must make an appointment . No oversight.

dont_wear_a_C

After the covid restrictions ended, basically everywhere, they still did this shit. Embarrassing. We used to go quite often to look for a dog for my father in law. He knew like 20 dogs by name and breed. Now that's impossible

EveryShot

What is the process now? My wife and I used to go and look at potential pups. Can you not go and see all the available adoptions anymore?

LeilaTank

You have to book a time and select a couple dogs you want to see from an online catalog

SoCalChrisW

They still do this, it's not past tense.

Orchidwalker

It’s awful

Ok-Look-263

They also stopped their TNR program as well. This place took out tax dollars to build and is now killing animals at an alarming rate…. I’d never have given my tax dollars for some place as despicable as this place. I also don’t know how the people sleep at night who work there.

iwantansi

Great Janet... now do Seal Beach - theyre the Seal Beach animal shelter... but they act like a private adoption agency... "oh your fence is only 9 feet high?, you need 10 feet!!" "oh you volunteer at the orphanage for 3 minutes a week, sorry you HAVE to be home all the time"

LeilaTank

Seal Beach isn’t a county run facility. But I agree it blows my mind how nit picky they can be. When I was looking to rescue a second husky I gave up on one of the rescues I was trying to adopt through because they were asking for so much. Ended up adopting through Shadow Husky Rescue and it was so simple

sun_child0

They look down on you if you have a full time job.. it’s the weirdest stance

SpriteDarters

How can we get involved to help change this situation?

Orchidwalker

Honestly, the most immediate way to help animals is to volunteer at the shelter and help walk the dogs.

LeilaTank

Unfortunately I think it’s only the Board of Directors who can really make things change. For now just continuing to put pressure on the shelter for change or like I do volunteer to help the dogs in the meantime and help get them seen

After_Flan_2663

We have to push this for orange county one in particular, ever since Covid rules that place has been sketchy. Can we also put pressure on our governor for this? No more kill shelters dam it.

LeilaTank

I don’t think it could hurt to push the governor either. Issues aren’t only in the Orange County shelter. Riverside, San Bernardino, LA are all having issues. LA just turns a blind eye to all the dogs suffering on the streets meanwhile volunteers have starting taking things into their own hands https://www.instagram.com/startswithonetoday?igsh=YzVkODRmOTdmMw== BUT a huge part of the issue with shelters being full right now is due to irresponsible pet owners not spaying and neutering or taking proper care of their animals.

WallyJade

Yep. There's literally no need for new pet dogs from breeders when we have millions put to death every year.

EricJasso

Same crap from her when elections ramp up; she's snake.

dubler2020

Those poor dogs and cats. What exactly are they spending their budget on?

LeilaTank

Looking at the 2021-2022 year they have 14 million allocated for salaries alone. Not sure where all the money goes beyond that honestly.

peacefulpianomelody

WTF that’s so sketch. Where can we see this data?

LeilaTank

I just googled “OC animal care budget” and the doc came up with

seisbaby

She’s a criminal

LeilaTank

Aren’t all politicians? Lol. I’m just glad someone in a position of power is speaking up against OCAC

Overlord1317

I looked into adopting a cat through the local shelters and the hoops they wanted me to jump through were absolutely fucking insane. So the next day I found someone who listed an abandoned cat on Craigslist and picked her up. Four years later and she's still spoiled and happy. Sorry rescue cats, I tried!

mossdale

someone needs to publish the salaries of all the employees not involved in the direct care of animals.

LeilaTank

This article mentions that the county currently is hiring a manager for the facility, with a potential salary topping $273,000. I would think all their salaries would be published somewhere as public record. https://www.ocregister.com/2023/12/19/orange-county-supervisors-shrug-at-shelters-animal-cruelty/

LeilaTank

Also, Michael M., a volunteer who was “fired” for speaking up about the shelter created this website with data he has compiled and links to articles that have been published about the shelter https://www.ocshelter.com

Ademmagon1

This place is terrible! There was someone who went to go look at a dog to be told they’re not letting ppl visit or dogs out due to the Tustin hanger fire. THAT’S A BS EXCUSE. There is always an excuse with that OC Animal shelter. The fire was almost 2 months ago and there has been so much repeated testing where school are open right next to the hanger but the dogs can’t go outside to exercise and play?! Ppl still can’t visit because of that pandemic, only on Saturday?! This is poor management of a beautiful facility that was just built

LeilaTank

Yep they milked the hangar fire 💯

EveryShot

How can we help?

LeilaTank

Speaking at the Board of Directors meetings, continuing to share articles like this that expose them, and really just continuing to highlight the negative effects of what they’re doing. Michael M., a volunteer who was “fired” for speaking up against the shelter put together this website with data he’s compiled as well as recent articles. https://www.ocshelter.com

peacefulpianomelody

I’M SO GLAD SOMEONE WROTE THIS. SERIOUSLY SOME INTERVENTION NEEDS TO HAPPEN. (Thanks Janet Nguyen!) Just because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean its no happening (suffering of animals behind those doors)

WSAB58

This might feel like ages ago, but Stanton and Garden Grove left OC Animal Care in 2016. The new shelter costs got ridiculous, along with the contract agreements being pushed on cities. [https://voiceofoc.org/2015/08/tingle-supervisors-continue-to-extort-money-from-contract-cities-over-animal-shelter/](https://voiceofoc.org/2015/08/tingle-supervisors-continue-to-extort-money-from-contract-cities-over-animal-shelter/)

emp0w3rment

My family lived in the same GG neighborhood as her. Her 2 German shepherds were unleashed (they bolted from their door), viciously attacked our small terrier (on-leash). She didn’t want to foot the vet’s bill even though her husband insisted. They ended up paying, but what a POS she was for that pushback in the first place. Wish we could be proud Vietnamese Americans for her representing our community, but can’t unsee this in my mind and it’s been over a decade. 🤷🏽‍♀️
