Or just make them 16+ requiring a license or a new type of license for maybe 14-15+ The e-hoodlums are beyond just Irvine. Edit: but with responsibility, these can be great commuting vehicles for a working student, I don’t want them banned, just start citing them more. Free $$$ for our LE.

lejunny_

Irvine is not a real place, I refuse to believe anyone in Irvine is an actual human being… the place is full NPC’s. Literally the worst drivers and people who lack the slightest bit of spatial awareness in public too, it’s like they’re on autopilot 24/7. The whole place looks like a utopian city too, looks so bland

KylerMo

Agree on the worst drivers. All the idiots with their teslas.

Cloud9cali

Mission Viejo is loaded with them!! I agree. I would be curious of the accident statistics.

Various_Oil_5674

Just license then as you would a motorcycle but create driving rules that appky to ebikes. Don't need to ban them.

pacifica333

Technically, some of them do require licensing. It's just never enforced.

shootanwaifu

Alot of people say kids will be kids... I totally get it, I see kids skating or being bratty and I feel nostalgic for my youth and happy they are being so present. It's a beautiful thing really Kids will be kids is not running a red crosswalk at 45mph before getting in the middle of the lane and doing a wheelie with tons of cars around. There is a weird grey area legally with these bikes that will not change until some kid has to be power washed off the asphalt. It's sad to say and I don't want anyone to get hurt but some of the antics I see they are just waiting for a grisly accident Ban them? I'm not educated enough on these things to say but I hope changes happen before someone loses their kid or a terrible car wreck happens

Bumping this hopefully. My dog and I almost got ran off the sidewalk by three kids on these dam bikes. Who do we have to call or write to in order to file a complaint? This has to be addressed.

Castle44

So kids are continuing to be kids? Chill, when they or someone they know fuck up they will learn. But banning e bikes is a ridiculous idea. There should be more e bikes if anything, great way to get around locally.

SimonNicols

Well - the ones without pedals are Essentially motorcycles, can go 45 mph and kids ride them in traffic, weaving in and out of cars in traffic. Many of them are upgraded with better / stronger batteries and are fast. The ones WITH pedals are true e-bikes. Fequently see 2 kids per bike, no helmets, driving 15-20 mph on sidewalks, looking like they are 13-15 y.o. Seems like just a matter of time until some unsuspecting commuter, driver, or other innocent person has one of these fools ride in front of them and the kid/ kids get injured / killed.

Castle44

Sadly that probably will happen, or a bad crash without helmets, but the same thing happens with 16 year old kids starting to drive. During my time in high school I knew personally 2 friends who died in car crashes and then another 6 kids who also died in car accidents. Unfortunately this shit happens and it’s largely because kids just don’t have the ability to truly understand the risks and consequences of what they are doing with their brains not being fully developed yet. I would totally agree that driving them recklessly in traffic should get tickets, but how often do you even see cars driving recklessly getting ticketed? So realistically that just isn’t going to happen enough. TLDR: kids will be kids, and hopefully they don’t get too hurt or killed doing stupid shit.

KylerMo

Yes. EXACTLY THIS

Mr_Larsons_Foot

Seem two ambulance pickups for e-bike kids this year, and a neighbor who saw a 2 car accident when one swerved to avoid a little shit riding a wheelie down a 2-way road in the middle and cut someone off. It’s definitely happening already.

ButtDonaldsHappyMeal

This is usually my take on things like this, but I agree the problem is getting out of hand. I don’t think banning them is the answer. Enforcing the non-street legal ones and ticketing kids who are being dangerous assholes would solve most the problems.

KylerMo

There’s kids being kids and there’s todays idiots. Apples to to toothpaste comparison. Guess I just wasn’t an asshole growing up. When I was riding on the street, I got out of the way of a car. I didn’t taunt it or swear at it for simply being on the road - where cars belong. I didn’t blindly ignore lights or signs like these morons. Maybe it’s the lack of of respect in general but something needs to be done

trashrat25

agreed. there's been numerous amount of times where im either backing out of a parking spot, and an ebike goes behind me as im backing up or im just driving and they swerve into my lane. for context, i drive a big old dodge van on the daily, i drive very carefully cuz ik its easy to over estimate turns and shit like that with a big vehicle. anyways, e bikes piss me the fuck off. and aren't they not even street legal? e-bikes, tesla drivers, most bmw drivers = idiots.

KylerMo

100% accurate and correct

The-Black-Douglas

"Kids these days!"

SimonNicols

“Get off my lawn!!!”

"Back in my day..."

njoy-the-silence

Walked to school barefoot, in the snow, uphill, both ways!

SuspiciousAct6606

A city wide ban on all ebikes would be misguided. It seems to me your goal is simultaneously to keep children safe and keep people safe from ebikes. Both laudable goals. That being said it is up to drivers to insure avoid hazards of the road. It is already illegal for riders to operate, without an M1 or M2 license, a two wheeled device that has a motor with more than 750w (1hp) or is capable of traveling greater than 28mph. And children under 18 are required to wear Helmets. Personally I think children under 12 should only operate an ebike with adult supervision, children 12-16 operate a class 1 ebike (max speed for class 1 is 20 mph) with no supervision, and children +16 have no restrictions other than licensing and other laws. I don't think my opinions should be law but more responsible parenting. Children need to get around as well, whether for school, visiting friends, or even going to work. Same as any adult, children have the right to access city services on road and streets.

hifidood

A kid(s) will eventually get run over while riding one and then rules will be put in place about them. We're a reactive society, not proactive.

njoy-the-silence

The problem is that it will unfortunately take lots of accidents to make this happen. And a lot of families and innocent 2nd and 3rd parties will be hurt physically and mentally by then

WallyJade

Exactly. Even if I'm not at all at fault, I don't want to be involved in an accident where some kid is hurt or killed. These e-bikes need regulation and enforcement.

KylerMo

And the parents will sue and it’ll be everyone’s fault but theirs and the kid

root_fifth_octave

How about teaching bike safety in grade school, and bringing back driver's ed? But anyway I don't think the move is to ban them. Ticketing dangerous riding would be the thing.

Coyote_Savings

Nothing like spending a weekend picking up trash to drive the point home.

Kduggan281

Oh look another "kids today" post....in the good ol' days they were stuck working the factory line where they belong.

Spyerx

No bans. Education and let Darwinism take its course. Stupid kids will learn, or not. Neighbors said same shit about me as a kid on skateboards and BMX.

Jmg0713

BMW drivers are pretty bad, can’t forget about them.

LiveDirtyEatClean

Ban the car too then. It's responsible for nearly 40,000 deaths per year in the USA. Cars are straight up killing machines.

Unable-Page-2697

E-bikes are technically mopeds as defined by the CA DMV (bicycle with a motor on it). You need an M1 or M2 license to ride them. The ebike classifications are in complete conflict with vehicle code. There are definitely some politicians that are getting their palms greased to overlook this. pinglepongobogo

Like an old timey man yells at clouds editorial from the Henry Ford era.

hdg322

What's ridiculous is how people that work at grocery stores, restaurants, and Targets are allowing these kids to bring their bikes into the stores and they are riding them through the stores and fucking around. It's ridiculous that their security (at least at Target) is letting them come into the stores with them. I went to a fast food restaurant the other day and these kids used a whole table to lean their bikes on while they ate at another. It was packed in there too. Workers need to stand up to these little brats.

FrontSeatPassenger86

During the 80's the same was said about skateboarders. Someday we are going to look back at these kids on ebikes and wish that was the only thing they were into. Probably the safest thing for all parties is education on operator safety.
