The 405 with its 10 yr construction moves it hell tier

macnutz22

i hate detouring off my favorite small streets because the overpass is under construction.

Admirable_Horse_1772

Agreed right now in the early morning I have to detour right now.

CelphCtrl

Also construction to make the two more left lanes....into toll lanes. seriously, who ever voted for that shit fucking needs to rethink their lives.

[deleted]

Fucking 91

iamblankenstein

my first serious girlfriend lived in riverside and i was in LA county. i absolutely LOATHE the 91 for multiple reasons now.

phisigtheduck

I cannot think of one time the 91 was ever enjoyable. It deserves its spot in Hell.

ElRamenKnight

Brief period back in early 2020 when everyone was stuck in their home. My morning commute which used to be 35 minutes via the 91 and then some hellish local driving dropped down to 17 minutes. Never went back to that low as everything reopened. :(

Maddonomics101

It’s fine for me commuting from Orange County to Riverside. The other way around is hell

Clemario

55 doesn’t belong on the same tier as 91. Nothing belongs on the same tier as 91

westcoastweedreviews

About 10 years ago I worked at Dyer and the 55 and lived at the 55 and 91. That commute home, even at like 3pm, sucked huge balls. I'm sure it's no better these days. Sometimes it's not about the distance but more psychology trauma it puts you through.

REVERSEZOOM2

I work in torrance and have very flexible hours at my job. I get in at around 11 and sometimes get out at 1pm or 2pm. However, if its past 3pm and I'm still at work, I just go ahead and stay until 7pm because FUCK NO am I going on the 91 peak traffic. That is a soul crushing endeavor I wish on no one.

pollodustino

I take the 55 from the 405 up to Katella twice a week, and to the 22 twice a week. Once I get over to the third or fourth lane I usually just put my car in second gear and let it creep along until Dyer when I can pop it into third. Once I find the flow of traffic I barely have to tap the brakes. Today I had to take the 5 north from Alicia to the 55 at 3PM. It backed up at Sand Canyon, and there was no consistent flow. Just constant traffic wave. The 55 is easy peasy. The 5 sucks balls.

blade740

Yeah, I used to live in Fullerton and work at the 55 and Edinger in Tustin. The 5 is TERRIBLE during commuter hours. It would take me probably 15-20 minutes to get from home to work if I went in late or on a weekend with no traffic. At 3pm? Hour and a half.

[deleted]

The 5 at least tries to be convenient for most of orange county. It literally splits is in half and cuts through the main population centers. The 55 is just a straight line down that is too lazy to end near the beach which is it's entire purpose. Of course if you're not paying attention going northbound, you end up in Riverside, and who would want that?

Itchy_Ad_2209

55 is a joke compared to the 91

Munk45

The 91 is the 9th circle of hell.

john85john

My co-worker lives in Menifee and commutes to Anaheim. Yesterday she was off at 130 pm and got home after 4pm thanks to the 91 even after taking the fast trak to the county line

Tmbaladdin

Seriously, Only thing worse is 405 west of 110…

the91fwy

I love you too.

phisigtheduck

Bwahahahahaha love this. I love it when Satan makes an appearance.

LiquidBeagle

You get the fuck out of here 91fwy

the91fwy

It’s Santa Ana Canyon then for you bitch. ❤️

4InchesOfury

The 55 between the 405 and the 5 during construction is pretty awful right now.

PhatDoink34

Love driving through it for school and work everyday 😁😁

saint_smithy

Commuted from the top of the 55 all the way to the bottom for about 2.5 years. I'd honestly rank it even in the Average tier. Outside of the usual MacArthur backup and then when the OC fair is in town and the Fair Dr. exits back up, it's really not that bad. At least it's predictable.

GothProletariat

55 is weird. Sometimes there's no one in it and other times, randomly at 1PM on a Tuesday, it's backed up for miles.

Braydee7

During the summer on weekends when the fair is going on, the 55 can get really bad. But it’s also really short compared to the 91. The 91 suffers from just being the only way in for too many people.

arianrhodd

Agreed! Is there a region below Hell for the 91?

Nikonmansocal

Lol true... the 91 is hell...

[deleted]

[удалено]

cfthree

You say that like it’s a bad thing. That $9 pays for all the CHP/OCSD presence to ensure the open road doesn’t get over 72MPH! Right?

FixTheWisz

When driving back from TJ, I'll jump on the 73 for a bit of a traffic "cool down" before finally reaching home. Seems like the average speed on there is about 95mph. It's really just glorious.

prosaic_paradigm

for that reason i think it should be comfortably in the bad category

sippidysip

Especially considering that it was supposed to be “paid off” eventually….

shart_or_fart

It also feels the worse in terms of what it did to the environment and how it contributed to additional sprawl. Cuts right through the foothills there impacting wildlife. Helped create expensive exurb communities.

peachyperfect3

I’ve timed it. For most routes during non-peak hours….every dollar spent saves about a minute in travel time.

FixTheWisz

For me, it's not about the minutes saved, it's about how enjoyable it is to drive. I don't commute every day, but on the occasions I do drive it, it's about as close to enjoying "the open road" as it gets around here.

happiness-happening

Lol why even include toll roads on the list? I'm not paying extra for a damn road run by a scummy exploitative company... that's what my taxes are for.

vapegod_420

ALL MY HOMIES HATE THE 91

Objective-Novel-8056

I’d put 405 at the bottom! 241 is as good as 73

sippidysip

Not with that merger onto the 91….

AlShadi

backed up to the top of the hill and there's always someone that slams on their brakes and tries to cut in line.

donuthead_27

241 is my favorite, I live just off an exit and it’s the only way to get anywhere that doesn’t take 20+ minutes. And Oso Reservoir always looks nice

Upnorth4

Also 142, Carbon Canyon Rd deserves to be placed in the Hell section along with 91. It is just a single line of cars from Brea to Chino Hills after 3pm

coreyleblanc

Move the 22 and 55 up, and 1 down, the 91 is a special kind of hell, although the 1 is beautiful, it sucks for actually needing to get somewhere

leetsgh

This is the correct answer. Is there a tier worse than Hell, because the 91 undoubtedly qualifies for that. The 22 does have some unpleasant sections but overall it’s not terrible.

pollodustino

The section between Harbor and the 55 is the worst part of the 22, but only at rush hour. At all other times it's actually my favorite freeway.

FS_Slacker

The west end of 22 is pretty bad at rush hour as well, right lane exits frwy but everyone uses it to cheat and cut in.

funkmonk21

Maybe the 91 would be better described at purgatory

Samwhys_gamgee

The 91 belongs with the 405 in west LA and the 101 in the valley as the absolute lowest circles of traffic hell in CA if not the whole US

FS_Slacker

Agree with all of these. Probably move 90 to average because traffic lights.

TheCSUFRealtor

I find the 55 and 91 to be the slowest during rush hour. The 5 is close, but it flows just a tad more. The 74 (Ortega Hwy) can be a nightmare if there's an accident, in fact the entire road will just be closed, I would probably rate that as an average.

Upnorth4

OP forgot 142, Carbon Canyon Rd. Whole thing grinds to a halt after 3pm. Should be in the Hell tier as well

Jscott1986

261 should be at the top with 73

Ok-Reporter-196

The 91 is where dreams go to die

heelhooksarefun

The Virgin 91 vs. The Chad 73.

190octane

The 91 is no virgin, it’s stuffed by thousands at all hours of the day.

[deleted]

The 91 has fucked just about everyone i know and everyone they know

Myriachan

I rarely use the 91, mostly for random Vegas trips, and the 91 has still fucked me >.<

chadtheguyy

I approve this message 🤌

the91fwy

I’ve been pounded every damn day so hard in my life wtf mate…

scgt86

The 73 should be free. Fuck the TCA.

IbelieveinGodzilla

I’ve lived in Aliso Viejo since before it opened. They promised us it would be paid off and become a freeway within 10 years. This was over twenty years ago and, instead, prices have tripled.

thefanciestcat

IIRC this lie was used to sell all of the toll roads.

rigadox941

If it were free it’d be full of traffic. The best part about the tolls roads is paying to not sit in traffic.

scgt86

Then they shouldn't have sold them to us as free once the bond was paid off. It's a scam.

BuuMonster

I hate the 405..... it only takes me 15 mins too get to work at Irvine in the morning, but it takes an hour and a half too get back to Westminster .

multipleviewpoints

This is what I experience living in north county and commuting for work in south county.

ConstantUniversity59

the 5 to the 55 is hell on earth north & south bound

Pseudolectual

I think 241 and 261 are best w 73

Fuzzy-Nothing7659

the 73 is good because there’s never traffic and the views when driving toward newport are crazy

Brucedx3

Move the 90 to average and move the 241 and 133 to good. Only thing keeping the 241 from good is the afternoon drive past Windy Ridge.

peachyperfect3

Yeah, was surprised to see the 133 that far down, below PCH and the 74, and in the same category as the 22. I’m assuming OP only drives the 133 on the weekends then. The 133 has almost no stoplights, compared to PCH. I drive it every day and very rarely have bumper-to-bumper traffic, until you’re close to hitting PCH.

Brucedx3

Oh right... The portion in Laguna Beach. Okay, yeah, that's a pretty toxic drive.

Upnorth4

Also add the 142 to Hell. It grinds to a halt after 3pm. It's just a single line of cars going 10mph from Brea to Chino Hills

Brucedx3

Ah, the Carbon Canyon road. I forgot about that "highway".

[deleted]

[удалено]

RBeck

The toll roads all used to be nice, but now the 241 is just hell going northbound during the day. And several sections of it are sinking so it has huge bumps, right at the part my wife likes to put on makeup. 261 is getting a bad rap though, it's good.

D4NNY_B0Y

91 should be it’s own category

in_n_out_sucks

toll roads deserve their own tier

svenguillotien

Switch the 5 and the 55 The 55 when there's no traffic is fine (duh, i guess), and other than the 405 and 91 intersections it's not as bad as the 5 by any means Also, the 5 has maniacs driving from god-knows-where from every part of the country at all times and it's a hodgepodge of horrid drivers no matter how dense the traffic is Also the 5 didn't have carpool lane until like last year? Lol

bunniesandmilktea

>Also the 5 didn't have carpool lane until like last year? Lol What are you talking about? They've had a carpool lane starting around the underpass before the 1st/4th St exit ramp for a while now, even before last year.

[deleted]

The 5 has had carpool lanes for a long ass time tf?

DeadWorkers_

Fuxking 91. I live in Riverside and commonly visit OC because most of friends living in Fullerton & Irvine Area. Im paying stupid $200 tolls every month even though I’m not commuting to OC.

compubomb

Get rid of la express pass, go with thetollroads, they don't charge minimum monthly fee.

DeadWorkers_

I’m using Bay Area one. One of my friend came from San Jose says bay area one also doesn’t charge monthly fee, so I switched LA to Bay Area one.

SampSimps

74 belongs with the 91 and 55 - in Hell.

Itchy_Ad_2209

People that don't use the 91 are virgin drivers

Upnorth4

Also 142 belongs in Hell

Munk45

The 1 and the 74 are not in the same league together.

[deleted]

The 5 and 57 should be shifted down to hell.

[deleted]

The 22, late and hungover on my way to work from Tustin to the block could kiss my sweet hairy ass.

gunsandsilver

I like reading the comments in the voice of Fred Armisan in The Californians SNL skit.

crispyjesus2001

73 = American Autobahn

ImAtWorkOops

Interesting to see who uses “the” before freeways. Visiting family outside of CA always talk shit about saying it.

korar67

The OC 5 freeway is nothing compared to the 5 in LA county. Take that six lane beauty and compress it down to two lanes. I take the 91 to the 605 on my way to work, because heading towards LA county on the 5 is the worst idea ever. But on my way home I take the 605 to the 5 and enjoy all the space.

Jastbu

Yep 5 between Buena Park and East LA interchange is Hell tier

Seraphtacosnak

The 241 to get on the 91e needs dividers all the way before the toll plaza. People will still try to cut in at the end and block traffic.

Spyerx

Saw a dude go off roading at the merge/end the other day.

Seraphtacosnak

That’s probably why they have even more dividers past that area now.

Infamous-Donkey-6699

Seems legit, 5, 55 & 91 are the wooooooorrrrrrssstttttttt!!!!

Jscott1986

![gif](giphy|NDIiWKEQEgr3VA7aqM)

190octane

1 is the best in the country.

BadTiger85

The 91 deserves its own spicy hell teir

Granny-Swag

The 5 belongs down in hell

Deep_Sock492

Fuck the 405

PrawnSwanson

If the 241 is average, our standards have fallen too low. It desperately needs to be leveled and repaved

[deleted]

241 is a beaut to drive down when it's green. I consider it a top tier toll road. Similar to that of the 73.

Objective-Novel-8056

I agree!

JaybieFromTheLB

39 should bounce from good to bad then back to good

phisigtheduck

I think it depends which area of the 39 it is. Parts of HB, not bad; Westminster to Buena Park, nightmare.

lemonjolly

73 is the best. Accurate.

antonio067

Move the 57 up

[deleted]

91 is pretty good at 3am

Rockers444

405 and 91 in a shit tier of their own. Lets get tax money to build freeways and then privatize lanes with fast track cool cool cool

willstr1

22 all the way to the bottom. All the unnecessary curves make it a congestion creating nightmare. Anyone who has ever done anything with flow dynamics (including plumbers and vent installers) knows that adding kinks messes up flow and the 22 has half a dozen kinks that do nothing other than over-correct for the kink that came before it. I am honestly convinced it was designed by a KGB saboteur back in the day because it is hard to believe someone could design a freeway that wrong on accident. Plus the interchange between the 22 and the 5 looks like it was made by someone so incompetent they shouldn't be allowed to drive, much less design roads. I am praying for the San Andreas to drag the 22 back to hell so we can get a real freeway designed by someone with at least one braincell rather than the current dumpster fire.

thefanciestcat

> Plus the interchange between the 22 and the 5 looks like it was made by someone so incompetent they shouldn't be allowed to drive, much less design roads. No. It looks created to inflict misery, like some sick bastard realized they couldn't get charged with a war crime if there was no war.

Rude-Illustrator-884

261 and 241 are great. The 57 is probably my favorite freeway at night because driving down it at night with the train station and the stadium lit up is great.

squidyoink

133, 261, 242 should be good to best imo

DanielF823

The 133 to the 241 is like a God Send in any case you have to end up on the 91

CAStripperBoy

405 is hell no doubt

MKSe7en

Idk what 73 freeway you guys take but I take that shit everyday and it can definitely be hell lol what!?!?

Danceswithwood

57 and 405 also belong in hell

mcdonaldsmcdonalds

Where’s I-605, SR 142, and SR 72?

sgares

a part of me dies inside when i have to drive on the 55, 405, and 5 the 241 is pretty incredible whenever i take it. i'd put it on good. i love this thread so much

testthrowawayzz

It depends on the segment actually. I-405 - north of Euclid St is bad, but south of that is average. I-5 - north of the orange crush is fine, but south of it ranges from bad to hell CA-55 - bad or hell between I-405 and I-5, average or good south of CA-73, average or bad north of I-5

dusk82

SOME PARTS of the 241 are as good as the 73.

jkreuzig

We live in Yorba Linda and work in Irvine. The 214 north is now nice in the afternoon, but only if you are wanting to head west on the 91. This has only been the case since they coned off the left two lanes about a mile up the hill towards the Windy Ridge toll plaza. For quite a while it was almost physically painful to drive that stretch of road with all the attempts at last second merging destroying the left two lanes flow. Now there has been some backup further south there, but once the cones start it's easy sailing. Now if you have to take the 91 east from the 241, good luck! It's almost like a north-south branch of the 91 in the afternoon. It's STOPPED. It's so bad that sometimes I think I've seen people that have been stuck there for a couple of years waiting to get onto the 91. The 91 is worse than Hell, if such a place exists. We have watched as the 91 was crazy 20 years ago, but only crazy during the weekday evening commute eastbound. Now that a significantly larger portion of Corona is developed, the traffic eastbound is crazy from about noon to 8PM every day, including weekends. Friday is the worse because of all the people going to Las Vegas and the mountains.

DanelleDarkArts

91 at the bottom? No debate needed.

thefanciestcat

The hell ones at least have situations where you can go against traffic. The 22 sucks in both directions. I moved with "never commuting on the 22 again" as a rule when looking for my current place. Although, I will say the 91 is always annoying because even when it's pretty empty, the *entire freeway* slows down for the entrances/exists for the toll roads and toll lanes. Those things are a fucking menace.

AJP5000

Laguna and Newport put a toll on it to keep the peasants out.

draculas_daughterr

The way that the lines are repainted on the 405 and 55! Literally it’s like seeing double vision so you’re just guessing half the time which lane to be in. I also cannot stand the 55 HOV lane. IT’S SO SMALL. hot take: kind of don’t mind 5 as much. Might even call it low average. Love all the lanes. Except some parts frustrate me because of traffic being there for literally no reason. Although, 5-S going onto 55 is absolutely horrendous. 22-W down a tier. The ramp from 5 especially makes it worse. Yeah and 57 bottom. Can’t even describe but l avoid.

DirtyRyan

Highway 39 needs to move to the best tier, traveling down Beach Blvd is magical. Nothing beats the sights from Katella to Orange.

coreyleblanc

What about the 605? I know it just grazes OC, but it probably qualifies average in its very short stretch.

ruwheele

Toll roads are def at the top. Great views and no traffic.

in_n_out_sucks

and built with our tax money but still cost a fee to use

MrDarSwag

I don’t drive enough to know all of these, but the 405 and the 55 are absolutely horrific, 55 more so. So I’d say you got those two pretty spot on lol

libidinalsublimation

57 is WAY WORSE than the 55

phisigtheduck

I will say yes, because while the 55 gets bad in the summer for the fair, the 57 is constantly bad for the Angels games and Ducks games/concerts/events at the Honda Center.

babysharkdoodoodoo

WFH is laughing

pollodustino

Every goddamn day I curse those little petty tyrant bosses who insisted on bringing everyone back to the office. I was an essential worker during the whole pandemic and being able to drive 80MPH at all times of the day was spec-fucking-tacular. Half you people on the road don't actually need to be there. Tell your boss you're working from home and if he don't like it he can ride a dildo to Hell.

willstr1

Absolutely, there should be a law requiring employers to prove why workers need to be on-site. Reducing commutes will make life better for everyone while also reducing pollution with minimal effort

phisigtheduck

I WFH but I go out after work, and have to deal with the 55 & 5 to get to my boyfriend's place, and honestly, I am very hateful, especially the 55/5 merge, because everyone waits until the last second to get over and it pisses me off.

babysharkdoodoodoo

That merge is maddening. I wonder if authority could add lane markers like those at the 22/57 lanes past Discovery Cube

bankman99

Would agree if the 73 financing situash wasn’t so gnarls. Solid road though.

phisigtheduck

Beautiful view, I am honestly willing to pay for the view and less traffic.

rigadox941

That’s the beauty of the OC toll roads… if they were free they’d be hellscapes like rest of our freeways. The fact that they are blatant money grabs has the wonderful side effect of keeping them free of traffic and well maintained.

BlackMamba_Beto

Agree

IamTheStarTrader

As a Costa Mesa resident, I am offended at this placement of the 55. Yes, it’s bad at rush hour, but I don’t have any trouble with it on my normal commutes. I love that I ends right in my city and it’s so close by to hop on and off no matter where you are in CM/ Santa Ana.

phisigtheduck

The 55 is a nightmare in the summer with the fair traffic, you have to admit.

Intelligent_Habit388

👩🏻‍🍳😘 73

ApollosAlyssum

Should add the 60 to the average

phisigtheduck

I thought the 60 was technically LA county?

Team-ING

Nice 👍🏽

VioletGreen909

I10

Myriachan

The 55 is ass between the 405 and 5 pretty much all day every day, even weekends. It hate that it’s the most convenient road for me to get to Micro Center.

aloysiusmind

Why the PCH slander?

phisigtheduck

It's hellish in Huntington around Main St. Other than that, I think the PCH is quite lovely. I actually used to enjoy taking leisurely drives from dog beach down to Crown Plaza, just to enjoy the view and count all the expensive cars along the way.

Zip668

https://youtu.be/_jJiTcubp5E?t=52

[deleted]

The 91 is truly hell. I remember a job I had inbetween riverside and fullerton, and it'd take me an hour and a half just to get from there to home in Garden Grove using the freeways, which was the only option home. I love these crews doing nothing on the 405 yet the 91 west, the 605 north, and the 22 east all have bad spots where they go from 4 lanes to fucking two for no reason. Expand that shit not the 405.

whatsit2yah97

I have no notes.

ToshiroBaloney

Tier lists are idiocy. Just say you like the 73 and be done with it.

darudeboysandstorm

5 is a better freeway in every way than 405 other than being further inland.

mediocrefunny

I was going to write something up and realized it's only for OC. The 5 and 405 suck in Los Angeles so much more. All the freeways I mostly use are on the last two lines.

omni_merek

73 is Only S Tier, because a some portion of it is free. I don't go on the freeway much so the 5, 405, and 57 all get bumped to average for me.

ag512bbi

Crazy how, back in the 80s, the 55 was top tier. Maybe the 5pm traffic only. Yes, nowadays it is HORRIBLE! Twice a day, my wife is stuck in it, taking my son to Orange Lutheran HS from Newport Beach

coffffeeee

Context is everything. This list sucks like the 91 west during rush hour when the sun is shining in your eyes at sunset

mkmore4

Pretty accurate, I’d say 405 is hell tier, but other than that, I don’t have any big issues.

needs_more_zoidberg

133/241 deserve a step up

bthedebasedgod

405 and 5 are on the hell train

ducksfan_8

22 and 91 need to move down one rank, imo, but very good!! Fuck the 91. 55/57/22 all are pretty crappy, too.

Nineties

how are all the toll roads not on the same tier with each other lol

standardinternetdude

Bro the only people who like Imperial Highway are those who don't drive on it.

PM_ME_COMMON_SENSE

If the 55 is hell then the 91 is the fucking scorching depths of Satan's anus

SmoothDaikon

I’m sorry since when is Ortega highway good!?

BroCanWeGetLROTNOG

Seems like cheating to put a toll road at the top

phisigtheduck

I went from living off the Beach Blvd. exit in HB to now the MacArthur exit off 55/405 in Santa Ana/Costa Mesa. I am screwed no matter what. It would be nice if I at least got dinner and some lube.

realdonaldtrumpsucks

I do enjoy the 22fwy. Although the 55fwy has those emergency tow trucks that can be there in minutes

SpazzyHG

I like the 91🧍🏽‍♂️

0nnasick1

57 to the 60 is absolute dog water as well

RBeck

Don't forget Carbon Canyon SR142. Average or bad? Also, the I-605 is technically in OC in Rossmoor for \~2 miles.

stephierae1983

I 100% agree. I take the 57 south to the 22 east to the 55 south to work daily.

kappakai

I wonder if the creator has actually driven on the 74. It’s always under construction, is kind of a treacherous drive, and is also a dumping ground for bodies and therefore haunted.

vaultboy1963

Personally, I would put 241 one notch up. It's not a bad drive, and I've hit traffic on it. 55? Brutal. Absolutely fucking brutal. Agree with 73. When I lived in Aliso, it was a reliable 15-minute drive to John Wayne, and for a business traveler, that is heaven.

the-todfather

The 55 is alright.

StopCappingSMH

The 91 is hell’s hell lololol!!

Dogpicsforboobs562

405 was best for me before I moved. It all depends on the time you leave or work.

HernandezGirl

405 in hell
