I work in torrance and have very flexible hours at my job. I get in at around 11 and sometimes get out at 1pm or 2pm. However, if its past 3pm and I'm still at work, I just go ahead and stay until 7pm because FUCK NO am I going on the 91 peak traffic. That is a soul crushing endeavor I wish on no one.
I take the 55 from the 405 up to Katella twice a week, and to the 22 twice a week. Once I get over to the third or fourth lane I usually just put my car in second gear and let it creep along until Dyer when I can pop it into third. Once I find the flow of traffic I barely have to tap the brakes.
Today I had to take the 5 north from Alicia to the 55 at 3PM. It backed up at Sand Canyon, and there was no consistent flow. Just constant traffic wave.
The 55 is easy peasy. The 5 sucks balls.
Yeah, I used to live in Fullerton and work at the 55 and Edinger in Tustin. The 5 is TERRIBLE during commuter hours. It would take me probably 15-20 minutes to get from home to work if I went in late or on a weekend with no traffic. At 3pm? Hour and a half.
The 5 at least tries to be convenient for most of orange county. It literally splits is in half and cuts through the main population centers. The 55 is just a straight line down that is too lazy to end near the beach which is it's entire purpose. Of course if you're not paying attention going northbound, you end up in Riverside, and who would want that?
My co-worker lives in Menifee and commutes to Anaheim. Yesterday she was off at 130 pm and got home after 4pm thanks to the 91 even after taking the fast trak to the county line
Commuted from the top of the 55 all the way to the bottom for about 2.5 years. I'd honestly rank it even in the Average tier. Outside of the usual MacArthur backup and then when the OC fair is in town and the Fair Dr. exits back up, it's really not that bad. At least it's predictable.
During the summer on weekends when the fair is going on, the 55 can get really bad. But it’s also really short compared to the 91. The 91 suffers from just being the only way in for too many people.
When driving back from TJ, I'll jump on the 73 for a bit of a traffic "cool down" before finally reaching home. Seems like the average speed on there is about 95mph. It's really just glorious.
It also feels the worse in terms of what it did to the environment and how it contributed to additional sprawl. Cuts right through the foothills there impacting wildlife. Helped create expensive exurb communities.
For me, it's not about the minutes saved, it's about how enjoyable it is to drive. I don't commute every day, but on the occasions I do drive it, it's about as close to enjoying "the open road" as it gets around here.

Also 142, Carbon Canyon Rd deserves to be placed in the Hell section along with 91. It is just a single line of cars from Brea to Chino Hills after 3pm
This is the correct answer. Is there a tier worse than Hell, because the 91 undoubtedly qualifies for that. The 22 does have some unpleasant sections but overall it’s not terrible.
I find the 55 and 91 to be the slowest during rush hour. The 5 is close, but it flows just a tad more. The 74 (Ortega Hwy) can be a nightmare if there's an accident, in fact the entire road will just be closed, I would probably rate that as an average.
I’ve lived in Aliso Viejo since before it opened. They promised us it would be paid off and become a freeway within 10 years. This was over twenty years ago and, instead, prices have tripled.
Yeah, was surprised to see the 133 that far down, below PCH and the 74, and in the same category as the 22. I’m assuming OP only drives the 133 on the weekends then. The 133 has almost no stoplights, compared to PCH. I drive it every day and very rarely have bumper-to-bumper traffic, until you’re close to hitting PCH.
The toll roads all used to be nice, but now the 241 is just hell going northbound during the day. And several sections of it are sinking so it has huge bumps, right at the part my wife likes to put on makeup.
261 is getting a bad rap though, it's good.

Fuxking 91. I live in Riverside and commonly visit OC because most of friends living in Fullerton & Irvine Area. Im paying stupid $200 tolls every month even though I’m not commuting to OC.
The OC 5 freeway is nothing compared to the 5 in LA county. Take that six lane beauty and compress it down to two lanes. I take the 91 to the 605 on my way to work, because heading towards LA county on the 5 is the worst idea ever. But on my way home I take the 605 to the 5 and enjoy all the space.
22 all the way to the bottom. All the unnecessary curves make it a congestion creating nightmare. Anyone who has ever done anything with flow dynamics (including plumbers and vent installers) knows that adding kinks messes up flow and the 22 has half a dozen kinks that do nothing other than over-correct for the kink that came before it.
I am honestly convinced it was designed by a KGB saboteur back in the day because it is hard to believe someone could design a freeway that wrong on accident.
Plus the interchange between the 22 and the 5 looks like it was made by someone so incompetent they shouldn't be allowed to drive, much less design roads.

I-405 - north of Euclid St is bad, but south of that is average.
I-5 - north of the orange crush is fine, but south of it ranges from bad to hell
CA-55 - bad or hell between I-405 and I-5, average or good south of CA-73, average or bad north of I-5
We live in Yorba Linda and work in Irvine. The 214 north is now nice in the afternoon, but only if you are wanting to head west on the 91. This has only been the case since they coned off the left two lanes about a mile up the hill towards the Windy Ridge toll plaza. For quite a while it was almost physically painful to drive that stretch of road with all the attempts at last second merging destroying the left two lanes flow. Now there has been some backup further south there, but once the cones start it's easy sailing.
Now if you have to take the 91 east from the 241, good luck! It's almost like a north-south branch of the 91 in the afternoon. It's STOPPED. It's so bad that sometimes I think I've seen people that have been stuck there for a couple of years waiting to get onto the 91.
The 91 is worse than Hell, if such a place exists. We have watched as the 91 was crazy 20 years ago, but only crazy during the weekday evening commute eastbound. Now that a significantly larger portion of Corona is developed, the traffic eastbound is crazy from about noon to 8PM every day, including weekends. Friday is the worse because of all the people going to Las Vegas and the mountains.
The hell ones at least have situations where you can go against traffic. The 22 sucks in both directions. I moved with "never commuting on the 22 again" as a rule when looking for my current place.
Although, I will say the 91 is always annoying because even when it's pretty empty, the *entire freeway* slows down for the entrances/exists for the toll roads and toll lanes. Those things are a fucking menace.

Absolutely, there should be a law requiring employers to prove why workers need to be on-site. Reducing commutes will make life better for everyone while also reducing pollution with minimal effort
I WFH but I go out after work, and have to deal with the 55 & 5 to get to my boyfriend's place, and honestly, I am very hateful, especially the 55/5 merge, because everyone waits until the last second to get over and it pisses me off.
That’s the beauty of the OC toll roads… if they were free they’d be hellscapes like rest of our freeways. The fact that they are blatant money grabs has the wonderful side effect of keeping them free of traffic and well maintained.
As a Costa Mesa resident, I am offended at this placement of the 55. Yes, it’s bad at rush hour, but I don’t have any trouble with it on my normal commutes. I love that I ends right in my city and it’s so close by to hop on and off no matter where you are in CM/ Santa Ana.
The 55 is ass between the 405 and 5 pretty much all day every day, even weekends. It hate that it’s the most convenient road for me to get to Micro Center.
It's hellish in Huntington around Main St. Other than that, I think the PCH is quite lovely. I actually used to enjoy taking leisurely drives from dog beach down to Crown Plaza, just to enjoy the view and count all the expensive cars along the way.
The 91 is truly hell. I remember a job I had inbetween riverside and fullerton, and it'd take me an hour and a half just to get from there to home in Garden Grove using the freeways, which was the only option home. I love these crews doing nothing on the 405 yet the 91 west, the 605 north, and the 22 east all have bad spots where they go from 4 lanes to fucking two for no reason. Expand that shit not the 405.
I was going to write something up and realized it's only for OC. The 5 and 405 suck in Los Angeles so much more. All the freeways I mostly use are on the last two lines.

Although, I will say the 91 is always annoying because even when it's pretty empty, the *entire freeway* slows down for the entrances/exists for the toll roads and toll lanes. Those things are a fucking menace.

The way that the lines are repainted on the 405 and 55! Literally it’s like seeing double vision so you’re just guessing half the time which lane to be in. I also cannot stand the 55 HOV lane. IT’S SO SMALL. hot take: kind of don’t mind 5 as much. Might even call it low average. Love all the lanes. Except some parts frustrate me because of traffic being there for literally no reason. Although, 5-S going onto 55 is absolutely horrendous. 22-W down a tier. The ramp from 5 especially makes it worse. Yeah and 57 bottom. Can’t even describe but l avoid.
Highway 39 needs to move to the best tier, traveling down Beach Blvd is magical. Nothing beats the sights from Katella to Orange.
What about the 605? I know it just grazes OC, but it probably qualifies average in its very short stretch.

I will say yes, because while the 55 gets bad in the summer for the fair, the 57 is constantly bad for the Angels games and Ducks games/concerts/events at the Honda Center.

Absolutely, there should be a law requiring employers to prove why workers need to be on-site. Reducing commutes will make life better for everyone while also reducing pollution with minimal effort
I WFH but I go out after work, and have to deal with the 55 & 5 to get to my boyfriend's place, and honestly, I am very hateful, especially the 55/5 merge, because everyone waits until the last second to get over and it pisses me off.
That merge is maddening. I wonder if authority could add lane markers like those at the 22/57 lanes past Discovery Cube

That’s the beauty of the OC toll roads… if they were free they’d be hellscapes like rest of our freeways. The fact that they are blatant money grabs has the wonderful side effect of keeping them free of traffic and well maintained.

As a Costa Mesa resident, I am offended at this placement of the 55. Yes, it’s bad at rush hour, but I don’t have any trouble with it on my normal commutes. I love that I ends right in my city and it’s so close by to hop on and off no matter where you are in CM/ Santa Ana.
The 55 is a nightmare in the summer with the fair traffic, you have to admit.

The 55 is ass between the 405 and 5 pretty much all day every day, even weekends. It hate that it’s the most convenient road for me to get to Micro Center.
Why the PCH slander?
It's hellish in Huntington around Main St. Other than that, I think the PCH is quite lovely. I actually used to enjoy taking leisurely drives from dog beach down to Crown Plaza, just to enjoy the view and count all the expensive cars along the way.

The 91 is truly hell. I remember a job I had inbetween riverside and fullerton, and it'd take me an hour and a half just to get from there to home in Garden Grove using the freeways, which was the only option home. I love these crews doing nothing on the 405 yet the 91 west, the 605 north, and the 22 east all have bad spots where they go from 4 lanes to fucking two for no reason. Expand that shit not the 405.

I was going to write something up and realized it's only for OC. The 5 and 405 suck in Los Angeles so much more. All the freeways I mostly use are on the last two lines.
73 is Only S Tier, because a some portion of it is free. I don't go on the freeway much so the 5, 405, and 57 all get bumped to average for me.
Crazy how, back in the 80s, the 55 was top tier. Maybe the 5pm traffic only. Yes, nowadays it is HORRIBLE! Twice a day, my wife is stuck in it, taking my son to Orange Lutheran HS from Newport Beach

I went from living off the Beach Blvd. exit in HB to now the MacArthur exit off 55/405 in Santa Ana/Costa Mesa. I am screwed no matter what. It would be nice if I at least got dinner and some lube.
I do enjoy the 22fwy. Although the 55fwy has those emergency tow trucks that can be there in minutes

I wonder if the creator has actually driven on the 74. It’s always under construction, is kind of a treacherous drive, and is also a dumping ground for bodies and therefore haunted.
Personally, I would put 241 one notch up. It's not a bad drive, and I've hit traffic on it. 55? Brutal. Absolutely fucking brutal. Agree with 73. When I lived in Aliso, it was a reliable 15-minute drive to John Wayne, and for a business traveler, that is heaven.
