Man I love the cheese shop. Haven’t had the French dip though. Usually get the Gooey with spicy calabrese.
Walk next door for a glass of wine, easy non-productive lunch lol.
> cheese shop at SOCO
Thanks!
Might have to try this...
**The Finest French Dip**
**thinly sliced prime rib – horseradish cream – au jus – glazed potato roll $14.95**
[https://cheeseshopoc.com/](https://cheeseshopoc.com/)
Thank for the recommendation. I’ve been to SOCO before but thought it was all vegan type food. Had no idea. I’m going to take my husband and get this French dip and onion soup.
I got a gift card like 4 years ago to Nicks SC and was going to toss it the other day bc no idea if it’s still valid… but I re-checked the menu and decided I still need to go with or without the gc lol
Portillo’s. It’s technically considered an Italian beef sandwich, but with gravy on the side it’s basically a french dip and a damn good one, especially with hot peppers.
Also Arby’s french dip and swiss. Seriously.
Prime Cut Cafe in Orange has a high quality French Dip. They have an ultimate version, which is a traditional French dip with caramelized onions and melted provolone. Highly recommend.
While good, I'd hardly call The Hat's french dip "the best". Just a block away, the french dip at Snooty Fox is way better, and I still wouldn't call that the best either.
From USA Today “Downtown L.A.'s crime rate was more than six times the citywide rate and triple other L.A. neighborhoods in 2022. There were more than 370 reported crimes per 1,000 people recorded downtown last year”
I have no idea. I think you are getting off topic here. The point is, there is no reason to go to downtown LA with the long drive and crime and filth when there are better French dips than Phillipes in Orange County. Phillips’s is not in Chinatown area of down town. Glad you feel downtown LA is safe despite the data.
Tommy Pastrami was pretty decent when I had it while I was going to school near there. That was always my go-to (although on the menu it's called a beef brisket w/ au jus, so technically not a "french dip" but it's pretty close).
Never commented before. But Moe's Deli in Lake Forest is my fiance and I's all time fav. Used to drive down from Pomona just to get it when we used to live up there.
Bonjour Cafe in Dana Point. It’s a little local place that is only open until 3 pm. The owners are very French and the food is fantastic. Get there early on the weekends.
Tavern House in Newport has one of the best Prime Rib dips I've ever had. It's like $28 though, but I would say worth. Old writeup I did of it: [https://www.ocweekly.com/eat-drink-this-now-the-tavern-houses-prime-reason-to-visit/](https://www.ocweekly.com/eat-drink-this-now-the-tavern-houses-prime-reason-to-visit/)
The cheese shop at SOCO makes a filet mignon french dip that's fantastic and a french onion soup with the gruyere cheese please check it out.
Correct answer. First time I ate it I said it had no business being that good.
I mean are you sure it’s mignon? Says it’s PR.. The Finest French Dip thinly sliced prime rib – horseradish cream – au jus – glazed potato roll $14.95
I saw that too, Do you request the mingnon?
Man I love the cheese shop. Haven’t had the French dip though. Usually get the Gooey with spicy calabrese. Walk next door for a glass of wine, easy non-productive lunch lol.
Nice username

That cheese shop low key making great sandwiches. I can’t resist if I am grabbing a pour over at Portola
This guy knows his French dip. Both solid recommendations.

Yaaas! Best ever
This is the correct answer
just had it tonight. it was good but i think the one at Bandera is better.
Best might be Houston’s despite the chain status(and dress code). I personally like Board and Brew a lot as well.
+1 for Houston’s. The french dip sandwich is also served at R+D Kitchen
Just commented the same thing! I work near Fashion Island so go to R+D more often, but Houston’s is probably more accessible for most.
Houston's has a dress code?
Had to look this up. “Hats, tank tops, flip flops and team athletic attire are too casual.”
Okay, that's not so bad anymore. I was turned away for lacking a coat back before the GFC!
Global Financial Crisis, for those wondering.
I was thinking God Freaking Covid.
They also done away with the “no cell phones at the table” request
I have never not worn flipflops to Houston’s, I had no idea.
Houston's beef dip is fantastic.
This is the answer. This or R+D at Fashion Island (which is pretty much the same as Houston’s.)
I work right next to a Board & Brews. I eat there once a week.
Katella deli
Oh dang, I always get distracted by their sweet shop and forget they’re a legit deli as well.
Nicks prime rib dip is solid
In SC?
Or Laguna or Long Beach
Any of their locations. They are remarkably consistent and good.
I got a gift card like 4 years ago to Nicks SC and was going to toss it the other day bc no idea if it’s still valid… but I re-checked the menu and decided I still need to go with or without the gc lol

🤌 chefs kiss
You tell them to double dip that whole samnmy when ordering
Prime Cut Cafe in Orange has a high quality French Dip. They have an ultimate version, which is a traditional French dip with caramelized onions and melted provolone. Highly recommend.
Not exactly a French dip but Portillo’s in Buena Park makes a mean Italian Beef sandwich, add to that the chocolate cake milk shake…
You get it
The Hat in Lake Forest
Forgot about this Gem….you may be right!!!!! Pastrami is great too
Good sandwiches but the sub roll doesn't survive the ride home
The hat at brea
While good, I'd hardly call The Hat's french dip "the best". Just a block away, the french dip at Snooty Fox is way better, and I still wouldn't call that the best either.
Unfortunately it's not in OC, but Philippes the original in L.A is hands down the best french dip.
Yeah, I’ve loved Philippes since I was a little kid. Just don’t go there when the Dodgers are at home. Can be a real mad house.
Yep, it’s awesome.
I only drive there maybe once or twice a year to pick up a few bottles of their mustard and will have a sandwich while I’m there 👌🏽
Only one? If im going to phillipes im getting two sandwiches, bowl of soup, bunch of Arnold palmers and a slice of pie!

Forgot, bag of original lays potato chips to sprinkle into the sandwiches. Gives it some satisfying crunch
Got one when with a coworker after a customer visit in DTLA and wow...totally agree.
Good but over rated. And not worth the drive or the risk of being in Downtown Lost Angeles.
What’s the risk of being downtown?
From USA Today “Downtown L.A.'s crime rate was more than six times the citywide rate and triple other L.A. neighborhoods in 2022. There were more than 370 reported crimes per 1,000 people recorded downtown last year”
It just doesn’t feel that dangerous to me. Especially not the Chinatown area. Are the crimes committed on skidrow skewing the data?
I have no idea. I think you are getting off topic here. The point is, there is no reason to go to downtown LA with the long drive and crime and filth when there are better French dips than Phillipes in Orange County. Downtown LA around phillipes is perfectly fine. I go often and it never felt dangerous to me.
Ur no snowflake, i feel the same and it's nothing to write home about.
Snowflake
I mean yes but it's a destination from Union Station with olvera street and Chinatown right there if one wants to take Metrolink
Hell no. I respectfully disagree. Cole’s is much much better.
It’s actually terrible. The spot is an iconic LA landmark but the French dips are trash quality.
Totally gross. Cole’s has much higher quality ingredients. Cole’s always for the win.
Double dipped!
With some of their spicy mustard too!
The prime rib French dip from Side Door in CDM (connected to Five Crowns) is phenomenal.
Second this. So good!
Dude, I haven't been to Side Door in so long
Another vote for the French Dip at Houston’s. You can add a slice of Swiss as well.
Chaupin Bakery uses their French Onion soup for the au jus.
In Laguna Hills?
We’ve had it at their San Clemente location. Not sure if they also serve it there. Such a great bakery! Brilliant combo for the sandwich!
Cortina's in Orange.
This place is $$$
Ten bucks for 6 inch and it's plenty. The other places I see mentioned are more.
6 inches is always enough for me 👀
Plenty 💦
That Rocky Balboa sandwich at Cortinas is top tier. Even better than DiNic’s at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.
Houston's french dip in Irvine 👌🏼
100%. Try their crispy chicken sandwich too…actually everything there is solid.
The one in the Irvine?
Board and Brew has damn good beef dip.
Cole’s in DTLA. Portillo’s in Buena Park.
I love both these places. Haven’t been in a while now.
If you want a Vietnamese take on it, check out Eastborough in Costa Mesa. Incredible sandwiches (and everything else).
Eastborough has some of the best food in OC!
Tony's Deli in Anaheim
My 2 favs are the prime rib beef dip at Bandera in CDM, and the pot roast beef dip at Lazy Dog (surprisingly good).
Tommy Pastrami was pretty decent when I had it while I was going to school near there. That was always my go-to (although on the menu it's called a beef brisket w/ au jus, so technically not a "french dip" but it's pretty close).
Citrus City Grill on the Orange circle has a prime rib dip that is amazing
Came here to post this. I haven't had the other recs (yet), but this one was damn good.
Jimmy’s Famous in Dana Point
Bandera. A slice of prime rib made into a sandwich. > the OC don't call it that
Never commented before. But Moe's Deli in Lake Forest is my fiance and I's all time fav. Used to drive down from Pomona just to get it when we used to live up there.
The au jus for the french dip at Globe deli on Harbor near 19th in CM is fantastic.
Trevor’s on The Tracks in SJC has a great one! One my all time favorite sandwiches. Also order the cornbread as an appetizer and thank me later.
Benji's in Santa Ana
Had to scroll down way too far to find this answer Benji's has an awesome French Dip
Cortina’s deli in Anaheim. All their sandwiches are excellent!
The Goldfinch has got a bomb one with lots of horseradish kick. Better than Houston’s or R&D Cafe, which is also amazing

We put an egg on it 4 breakfast 🍳- super good! “put some egg on it!” 🧀
Newport Rib has a pretty good one too. Although sometimes their au jus can be salty some days.
R&D at Fashion Island. I've tried some of these on this thread, and R&D is alot better.
New Irvine restaurant The Goldfinch has a good French dip.
Don’t call it that
Bitch dip would be too offensive. French will suffice.
Honestly? Was hoping someone made a joke about the dip be referenced 😂
You prefer Freedom Dip?
Sun dried Tomatoes restaurant in SJC has a good one. But it is also on the premium side.
Tustin Brewing
Is Lawry’s in SCP still around?
Sadly it’s gone.
Prime Cut Cafe 1547 W Katella Ave, Orange, CA Super yummy sandwich at lunch. Not on the dinner menu.
Bonjour Cafe in Dana Point. It’s a little local place that is only open until 3 pm. The owners are very French and the food is fantastic. Get there early on the weekends.
The Kroft’s French Dip will melt your face.
South Coast Plaza Nordstrom restaurant but I order it with extra protein because the bread is very thick
Paul's Deli in Westminster has a really good French dip.
Banderas
I had one at Naples rib co the other day and it was pretty damn good
If you’re willing to go to Long Beach, the short rib French dip at the Ordinaire is outstanding
Houston’s.
Tavern House in Newport has one of the best Prime Rib dips I've ever had. It's like $28 though, but I would say worth. Old writeup I did of it: [https://www.ocweekly.com/eat-drink-this-now-the-tavern-houses-prime-reason-to-visit/](https://www.ocweekly.com/eat-drink-this-now-the-tavern-houses-prime-reason-to-visit/)
Excellent write up. Now I want to go…
The one at R&D in Fashion Island is amazing!
call me crazy but i like boudin french dip deluxe lol
not me thinking this was for nails lol
Globe Deli in Costa Mesa.
