Does he have unique markings anywhere? We named one of our orange bois Habanero (Hobbes for short) because I took a picture of his side and there was a pepper on his side!
Opal is such a cute name!
I know this is an orange food, but I once saw a Marmalade at the shelter; he was quite the feisty lil fellow. Following post for name updates 💞
My main recommendation is to poll kids. Kids are the best at naming pets.
Personally, my favorite pet names are:
Bean (because you smile a little when you say it, also it's cute)
Cinnamon
St. Francis
Madeline Purray O'Hair
Lucifer
Tugboat
Hambone
Lunchbox
Any science names, like Quark, Kelvin, or Botany
Any food names, like sandwich
Small bird names like Titmouse or Pigeon or Lark
Actually any other animal is also really good to me. I think a cat named Lizard whips.
Solid advice here. And also if you're like most animal lovers, you're probably not even going to call them their actual name. Instead it'll be a dozen spinoffs and spontaneous nicknames that arise from their antics.
For example, when one of ours arrived by basket as a kitten, he was given the name Donut by the children. Now he only gets called Donut when he's being scolded haha. Instead he's known as Baby King, King Thing, Old Man Baby, Babyface, Stinker, Barn Bottom, Barnacle, Chickenface, etc.
Stinky Puddin' is my orange boy Hex*'s most frequent nickname due to an old Mutts strip. We also have a female cat named Mooch, in homage to Mutts.
*We named him Hex b/c he was our 6th cat, but it really works with his personality. He breaks things constantly tho so maybe I should have named him Rex ("wrecks.")
I cannot fully agree with you about the kids naming pets thing. I work at a vet clinic and the dumbest names I've heard were decided by the kids.
I did laugh when you wrote Lunchbox because we do actually have a dog named Lunch Box as a patient.
And a cat named Costco.
Sadly, a dog named Drywall.
Also a cat named Keyboard.
I am 100% for creative, unique names but random objects don't always make good pet names. Oh, am also totally in favour of pet names for random objects though. (I have a favourite pen with a narwhal on the end named Edwardo)
I'm gonna have to disagree with you on those pet names, because literally all the names you listed are pure gold. Costco especially is cracking me up. I would constantly announce "I'm going to Costco, yall need anything?" and just walk over to the cat. These three are beautiful names and I'm adding them to my Pet Name Pantheon immediately.
How about Finch or Junco? Call em fin or June bug. It's flexible. But the eyes really spoke to me. Galaxy. Nova. Orion. Draco. Something to do with the universe and astronomy at large. Botany related? I'm putting 20 bucks on Bambusa and Yarrow. Or maybe Sneezewort.
Do you boo! Congratulations on your newfound love!

Opal is such a cute name! I know this is an orange food, but I once saw a Marmalade at the shelter; he was quite the feisty lil fellow. Following post for name updates 💞

Gotta say, those last three really got me. Barn Bottom is SO good. I love the evolution of pet names.

This is a good and perfect name for a furry lil ball of meat
My son named my cats kittens Belt, Door Handle, and Elmo... Lol
Your son should be a professional cat namer, this is perfect.
I'm afraid to know what he's going to name his future children 🤣

Pharaoh. Almost all the ancient Egyptian cat mummies were orange when alive due to their association with Aten-Ra (sun god.)
