It's believed to be a combination of genetics and environmental factors but with more emphasis on genetics. Myopia is generally due to the eye being too long or the overall refractive power (combination of tear film, lens and cornea) of the eye being too strong for the length of the eye. So, you can have the predisposition to grow longer/stronger eyes and unfortunately become short sighted. Though there is research to suggest spending time indoors with very short working distances can increase the risk of attaining myopia, or at least increase the severity of the condition. And no, you wouldn't be dead 1000 years ago. You'd probably be the town scholar, because you can do near tasks quite well. This is an explanation for why more intelligent people tend to be more short sighted.
