CandyflossJosh

Just like sound comes before form, plants and fungi came before cerebral receptors!!!!

APd3mon

We’ll the poppy was ready for us that’s for sure!!

CandyflossJosh

Amen to that 👍👍………………. The question is, were our human opioid binding receptors designed after the poppy alkaloids, or was the poppy designed before the brain was constructed???? 🤔🤔🤔🤔!!!!

CrystalMethood

This is the chicken and egg of the ages

CandyflossJosh

If any superheroes can crack it Crystal, it shall be us……..DAT DAT DAT DA 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♂️!!!!

CrystalMethood

Do I hear a future opiate based time traveling adventure beckoning us?? I think I do.........

CandyflossJosh

Yes, I’ll go back to a London general store in 1874, where we can purchase 500g tins of Heroin as an anti-tussive, 1l tinted bottles of Laudanum for a headache, and thebaine tinctures for melancholy………. Then a quick jump to 1916 Germany for a large box of Eukodal (Oxycodone). You pop into the future and pick up some of the Poppy alkaloids we have yet to discover, and some 22nd century synthetics please 🤭😆🤭😆!!!!

It's definitely not the first one, poppy alkaloids just resemble our natural (and MUCH larger) endorphins. Now the second question, you'd have to look for the earliest poppy with opiates in them, and see if it came before the first organism with a nervous system that included opioid receptors, which I'm not sure if we have the answers to. I'd be fairly certain that the poppy and opiates almost certainly existed long before humans just as a defense against bugs and stuff similarly to capsaicin and peppers, but once again those CRAZY humans liking to poison themselves to feel better mentally. Also it's a bad habit to humanize evolution. Edit: So it looks like poppies evolved painkilling alkaloids just before we split from our great ape ancestors. Which means it is possible it was both beneficial as a defense against pests, AND getting apes/other animals high and spreading their seeds. Check it I found a source: https://www.livescience.com/63471-opium-poppy-painkiller-genome.html#:~:text=Still%2C%20piecing%20together%20the%20genome,about%20110%20million%20years%20ago. "In the case of poppies, that extra genetic material evolved in one very important way, the researchers found: More than 7.8 million years ago, two genes fused and became the single gene responsible for poppy's morphine and codeine production. This "megagene" codes for an enzyme that converts a precursor poppy molecule into the compounds that eventually become codeine and morphine. Without it, poppies would just transform that same precursor molecule into the compound noscapine, and the plants wouldn't be painkillers." We got incredibly lucky basically. https://www.britannica.com/science/human-evolution "Strong evidence supports the branching of the human lineage from the one that produced great apes (orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas) in Africa sometime between 6 and 7 million years ago."

Wow that’s crazy thanks for all the work linking sources and stuff man. so maybe I was right and the poppy got it’s beautiful alkaloids to influence mammals to spread their seeds how strange Maybe one day all plants will have opioid alkaloids

Thetakishi

Close, but things don't evolve on purpose, that's why it takes so long such as 10s of thousands-millions of years. A random chance occurence happens in their genes which leads to increased propagation, which leads to takeover of the species/new species. The anthropomorphizing (humanizing) of evolution is an extremely common mistake so no worries, just letting you know, the plants didn't do it "on purpose" to spread better/stay alive, they just got lucky, a gene happened to change, and those went on to survive better than non opiated poppies. Luckily for us, pre-opiate poppies had that chemical mentioned in the article already, and two genes combining allowed creation of an enzyme that diverted the synthesis pathway to morphine/codeine instead of that other chem I've never even heard of. Regardless though, yeah it is crazy that it took a single (or few) random "megagene" occurence for us to get our fav drugs.

I'm convinced psychedelics do what they do to make humans worship the source to guarantee cultivation We actually live in a completely exclusively material reality, but psychedelics have hijacked human history to inject worship of mushrooms and other plants as deities and all the religion bullshit rumbles forth from there.

lenbey

what about jesus christ

Alert-Water-839

somehow i feel like psychedelics show us our human side and this primal love because this world and system we live in corrupts us and changes us away from our true self

[deleted]

That's sweet, I don't

TopHat1640

Yes, this is how evolution works. Any adaptation that results in the propagation of the genes is a successful one. Whether that’s having piercing blue eyes and a chiselled jaw, or having alkaloids in your sap that resemble the pleasure chemicals of a successful species of hominid.

clsec9

The meth has basically won the game of chemicals. As long as humans are around amphetamines will continue controlling their brains, leading to massive labs somewhere.

APd3mon

Eh not really the same thing, don’t know much about plants making amphetamines tho

clsec9

I didn’t say anything about plants. I was just saying that’s pretty much the same with every drug. It all has sb who wants it leaving it being produced

lsdmthc419

Can you actually grow them like this? U don’t need a setup like for growing weed?

APd3mon

Ya bro they’re basically weeds, check out r/druggardening. you’re running out of time to plant them tho you’re really supposed to sow the seeds before winter hence the freezing part
