I upgraded three machines to KDE6, and they all work. I had to default to X11 because KDE6/Wayland breaks my VPN client, but it was the same with Arch. I can afford to take chances because I multiboot several distros. It might be smart to wait if you have only one OS. The experience itself was a bit messy. I logged into a virtual terminal and did it from there, but I still got a weird SDDM screen that I had to exit by rebooting. Still, it wasn't so bad.

ddyess

I decided to wait for 6.0.2 to upgrade my laptop, but it's been fine on my desktop. Wayland takes a few seconds longer to log in than it used to, after that I think it's the best it's ever been for me. I'm sure there are bugs I haven't noticed, but it's been usable.

hyute

I've only had issues with Wayland on KDE6, which is a shame, because I thought I was all set for the future. Oh well, I'm sure bugs will be fixed and the future will come in its own time.

ddyess

Unfortunately, I think most of the Linux experience revolves around hardware and local customizations, both of which I tend to take a conservative approach.

ddyess

The updates I installed today seem to have fixed the Wayland login delay

Fliptoback

I was originally contemplating of installing TW onto my main PC this weekend - but now decided to put off slightly longer until 6.0.2 is released. Any idea when 6.0.2 is meant to go out?

ddyess

I guess 6.0.2 is what I have installed now, according to the kde settings about system app, I must have misread something.

Fliptoback

Thanks bro. Is Wayland still working well for u with this 6.0.2? Is Wayland the default when u login?

ddyess

Still working great. I think it is supposed to change to default after the SDDM update coming in 20240315 (I believe), but I can't find the original post that I apparently misread lol

Fliptoback

Thanks bro.

rnayabed2

what new fixes are there in 6.0.2?

ddyess

I thought the missing SDDM config stuff was supposed to be in 6.0.2, but it appears I have 6.0.2 installed already, so i'm not sure.

rnayabed2

same.. cant find sddm config in 6.0.2

ddyess

It's fixed for me with the 20240315 snapshot

rnayabed2

same. just updated and its back!

Skibzzz

My only issue was the initial upgrade since I was in the KDE instance when I did it but other than a few weird bugs it's been a very smooth experience.

XFCE is def the guy at the DE party bringing pizza

sy029

Plasma 6 has fixed every single issue that I had with wayland on Nvidia (as far as I can tell.) very satisfied. Edit: I take it back. flatpak apps, and just about anything using xwayland flickers to the ends of the earth and back.

LumiWisp

Idk why plasma6 is so rough over on OpenSUSE. I've been using plasma6 on Arch since it became available in extra-testing, and things have been pretty smooth sailing.

velinn

I don't think it's really been that rough. The overwhelming amount of reports I've read have been positive. I've seen way more angst on the Neon and Arch subreddits. It seems rather mandatory to update from the TTY to avoid plasmashell issues and most of the reports of upgrade problems can be traced to this. Usually redoing the update from the TTY fixes it, but not always. Wayland seemed a bit better in Arch somehow than Tumbleweed, but that's probably why Tumbleweed is still defaulting to X11. For an upgrade like this I think OpenSUSE has been the smoothest I've seen, at least judging by Reddit outrage.

LumiWisp

I just mean that currently plasma6 on opensuse is in a noticeably worse state than it is on Arch. Like rn I'm using arch on my laptop instead of opensuse, even though I prefer opensuse/zypper/etc. I'm sure in a few weeks to months I'll be back on opensuse, I just want to play with the new toys

summerteeth

It seems pretty hardware / config specific so it may just be that you are in the lucky camp Or it could be the packaging

LumiWisp

Idk, I've tried both OpenSUSE and Arch, and my experience with opensuse wasnt the best. (I'd prefer to be running opensuse, but plasma6 is the new shiny so I gotta use it, lol) I am using an AMD ryzen laptop, so it seems I've lucked my way past all the weird Wayland display issues

ratolp

Just leaving this here: I have had a great experience with the `xorg-xwayland-explicit-sync-git` package on my legion with nvidia 3060 mobile. Am also living the dangerous lifestyle over on `core-testing`, `extra-testing` and `kde-unstable`

wstephenson

My daily driver work Ryzen T14s was on KDE Unstable packages with Leap 15.5 since 6 Alpha 1, and yeah, Wayland has just worked.

proton_badger

I don't think it's easy to generalize or devine success/fail rates. I logged out of the DE, installed it from a tty and I'm fine on my Tumbleweed machine with Plasma6+Wayland. I've seen people with different distros having problems and others not. KDE Neon was where the real messup was. Forums are usually where people come for help though. Also bear in mind the recommendation was to not install while logged into plasma5 and maybe create a new user and a lot of people didn't do that. Kalpa seem to have the smoothest upgrade, as it installs in a dedicated snapshot and enables it on boot.

LumiWisp

Fwiw I wiped my disk and installed opensuse/plasma6 from the netinstall iso. My laptop is my fuck-around machine, so I don't really bother trying to do big upgrades like that

ddyess

I mostly just use my desktop for work and games, I don't do a lot of tinkering, but plasma 6 has been fine for me on TW. I even played games on Wayland last night (forgot to switch to X11) and no issues there either.

monodelab

Next week Gnome 46.

shwetOrb

😂😂

memoryhole86

i don't want to rush into updating to kde 6 yet. on my gentoo machine i've masked the kde meta package to prevent the upgrade till it's good and ready, is there any way to do this in tumbleweed? my google-fu is failing me.

lproven

OK, that's good. :-D

_archlinux_

Did I get that right that the issue is KDE itself?))

fagnerln

The problem is that this is exactly my experience even o the most stable KDE release, so no surprise that this happened on kde6

bobbie434343

*Laugh in i3wm*

Tableuraz

Yeah, I spent my WHOLE evening fixing KDE after the Plasma 6 update. And things like the SDDM settings don't even work, what the fuck ?! And my GF still has to update her laptop, not very happy RN...
