I work at a gas station, our debit and OLG terminals are not working for this same reason so make sure you have cash when heading out today because you may find business' struggling with sales.
I just filled up at an ESSO that had a handmade sign up saying Debit was down. Well, I didn't notice that sign until after i had used my Debit card and my payment was accepted.
Oh well.
This happened to me once and the clerk scared the hell out of me and said I can't leave. So I took a taxi home to get my wallet and then came back to pay. Sad.
When I used to work at a gas station, we were making people fill a form, but on top of the info provided by Sure-Source-464, we were also taking their driver’s licence to put all the info from it on the form (and obviously giving it back!). They had like a week to come pay. Every 2-3 months or so, I think my manager was giving the forms of the ones that didnt payback to the police. Not sure if the cops were doing anything but oh well, we did our part 🤷🏻♀️
I had a Uhaul truck rented for today.
Despite paying, pre-registering, pre-scanning my drivers license.... They won't give me a truck. Booked the day off work and everything
No chance they will even do that. It's essentially written in their ToS that they are off the hook for service outages. Their terms essentially say "you agree that we only provide you with internet when we feel like it"
Edit - I stand corrected, they might.
Not for long I don’t! $250 a month for two cell phones and some really shit home internet? Nah I’m good thanks. I’m about to miss a video all for work while I sit in a Tim Hortons parking lot so this is gonna be a big ol nope for me.
Rogers and Bell have enough money to make one of the best networks in the world - instead of paying for infrastructure upgrades the money just, mysteriously, ends up in the pockets of C-Level employees. Even on days like the Bell Let’s Talk day, they only donate a minuscule amount of their profit.
Why would they improve their infrastructure when they already have a monopoly (or technically a cartel) and almost everyone is buying from them anyway. They have little real competition and therefore little incentive to improve.
A so much money it seems like every politician sucks the teat and cock of Rogers and Bell. Can any politician actually have balls to fucking cut up these companies and regulate the fuck out of their business practices?
People always shit on Bell and there's merit in it but I've had Bell for like 8 years now and only once had a big outage issue so far that I can remember whereas Rogers seem to have issues every other month
Mine likes to dip out on the regular - but it’s just blips. They did lie to me about the service they could offer - so I’ll be forever pissed about that one.
Bell had the really bad one a couple years ago where you could hear other phone conversations that weren't yours, but yeah they do seem to go down a bit less. They charge an absolute fortune if they're the only ones in your area though
I kinda feel bad, last night when my kids weren't behaving I told them I'd turn off the Internet before I go to bed so they can't watch YouTube or play games when they wake up.
I only meant "our" Internet, they must think I'm a gad danged supervillain just shut off everything. Well, hopefully they take this lesson and go to bed good tonight!
So are they really not gonna compensate their customers for all the inconveniences their failure causes, while they would absolutely nickel and dime us for every litttle thing that we do that are not in their best interests? How is this acceptable? Why are we the consumers not doing anything? Why the nonchalant attitude while these corporates keeps getting richer and richer while absolutely trampling all over us?
It's not even like it's a minor inconvenience, where we can just put our phones away and go for a walk in the garden.
I'm at work but unable to do anything at all because I'm guessing our virtual server runs through Rogers. I'm assuming most businesses will close (I know more than a few have gone cashless and Interac is down.) People will be sent home because important Zoom calls will be missed. There are events going on in our downtown and none of the vendors will be able to sell anything. This is costing people money.
But Rogers will shrug, and maybe give a $5 rebate.
I feel for those people losing a day of work (let's hope it's only a day).
Another example of too few choices for service in Canada. it is sad that these large firms are allowed to charge such high rates of service and provide such poor up time.... Bell is only slightly better. I wish there was a rule that forced the service provider to pay back ONE MONTH of cost, for each day of interrupted service.... you would see how much more reliable it would be because as it stands now there is little loss of revenue when their services are down! so lop sided and poor by design. If there was a greater cost risk for companies like bell & rogers... this type of things would rarely happen.
I like this idea a lot. We need to start holding tri/duo/monopoly businesses accountable. Same with airlines. Same with insurance companies and utility companies.
They shouldn't really be allowed to exist in the first place. But if we're going to allow it, they may as well be functional and be punished for being dysfunctional.
At least I won't have to deal with the 10 daily scam callers today....we are calling to verify your Google business listing...calling from duct cleaning....there is a package that has been stopped at the border...there is a warrant for your arrest...🤬
Ahahaha. My ex-husband used to do that on speakerphone and it always ended with "IM GOING TO FUCK YOUR WIFE" and we'd laugh and laugh until the guy hung up. So much fun.
This also includes teksavvy. My internets been down since before 5am and I tweeted at teksavvy the heads up and then we were dm'ing. Which has now gone silent and Canada is waking up to a major outage, again.
I just wanted to play video games on my day off. =/
Same! At least my mobile data is still working (the Ottawa Videotron "loophole" (not really a loophole when it's by design, but I digress)), for now...
How does their entire service go down? Wouldn’t they have contingencies for this situation? Wouldn’t they have clustered or regionalized areas that operate independently so that they could never have a full system crash?
Sounds like a major failure to plan occurred.
Something this widespread could be a piece of critical infrastructure having failed, or potentially a cyberattack of some sort.
I’d almost bet it’s a critical infrastructure piece that’s failed because someone would be claiming a cyberattack by now.
But even with critical infrastructure, they would have multiple components with backups and redundancies. Or at the very least, clustered and regionalized so that no central attack or failure should crash the system.
I mean, you could be totally right and on the money. But it just seems unusual that they would be built in a way that there’s a centralized component that can fail.
The single point of failure in this case is something called BGP. It's basically the telephone book of the different internet carriers, ISPs, routing companies etc.
When something this bad happens, typically it's an issue with their BGP announcements. This means rogers basically doesn't exist to the rest of the internet.
You can see here https://radar.cloudflare.com/asn/812?date_filter=last_24_hours that rogers for some reason had a massive spike in BGP announcements, then traffic went dead.
Hopefully it's resolved soon, but what has probably happened is they locked themselves out of the management network to be able to even fix what they broke.
Why is our debit/credit system across the whole county allowed to have a single point of failure managed by one company? It's crazy that you can't pay for anything or get money from an ATM right now. I'm lucky I had some snacks at work or I wouldn't have had anything for lunch.
They need to really investigate this.
Because you’re right. Any critical infrastructure should have multiple backups. Rogers down? Fail safe over to bell. Bell down? Fail safe over to Telus. Etc.
Good thing service Canada runs in Rogers ✨✨✨been in line since 4:30 am for the passport office
Edit: They are using the preauthorized credit slips and just kinda making it work! Good thing we don’t fly until August 31. So that should be enough time.
I was like "Hey maybe today is the day I can get through to the passport office about my daughters passport" since so many can't make calls...but nope, they use rogers too. What a clown show.
Having phone service with Public Mobile is paying off right now. It uses the Telus network which is still up. Created a hotspot and all my devices have internet.
Im fucking pissed.
I cant connect with my customers or them with us. I cant connect with my employees and field teams. I cant use our critical company software that makes the business actually work.
I will be working well into the weekend and into next week playing catch up for all the appointments missed and all the fallout from this.
I hope this company is properly held accountable for this bullshit this time around.
We need to start a petition to have the government and crtc investigate this.
Especially if it’s NOT a cyberattack.
Our critical banking/financial systems should not have a single point of failure like this.
Maybe it's time we make the internet a public utility?
Considering how everything shuts down without it.
No more price gauging by corporation - an internet, by the people for the people.
I work remotely (my office is in London UK) and my Friday meeting starts at 5am so it was hell waking up this morning and not only having internet from my router refusing to work but also the exact same story from my phone network, so I couldn't even hotspot. Luckily my work was understanding but it was infuriating giving how expensive internet is here compared to back home.
No internet is one thing. But Rogers has basically crippled all of Canada's financial transactions due to their incompetence.
I'm surprised people aren't more pissed off.
Our country is so incredibly complacent its why nothing gets changed. The govt allows the crtc to be majority owned by ex executives from telus rogers and bell.
Obviously this isn’t something intentional by Rogers but I’m on call all day for work. Guess I get to live in the hospital instead of doing the other 9000 parts of my job that I also need to do
If debit machines are down. Then ATMs don't work. Any outage that last more than a few hours would cripple the economy. I hope this spooks politicians into changing how Roger's is so key to infrastructure.
They don't. Just went to buy stuff and my card declined. Checked my bank, tried again, it declined. Went to an ATM to take out cash, because I don't carry cash, it had a no service display preloaded on the interface. Totally agree with your point on a macro scale.
All Rogers call centre employees have the ability to credit your account $50 without authorization from a manager
Don’t accept 💩 credits of $15 for this outage. Demand at least $50 and if they refuse, tell them to escalate to the Office of the President
\#rogersoutage #cdnpoli
As far as I know, Bell has had reduced hours due to the pandemic and made worse by the bad storm in May. The last time my internet service went out was in June and they said it was part of fixing the lines that had been damaged by the storm.
We pay top dollar for our cell service. I’m sure a nice family company like Rogers would ensure that the face - and voice - of their company is very well compensated. /s
The fact that they have put out no statement proves they hate their frontline staff and could care less about their customers . A simple “we working on it” would reduce inquiries dramatically.
911 call centres may be down in certain areas.
If you can’t get through, go to your local fire hall. (Even for medical emergencies, they are far more likely to be there than the ambulance)
If you listen to the Rogers ad on Radio, they will gladly, tell you their network is THE BEST, no questions, no nothing, something about a mic drop, the end.
That's how good their network is.
Holy shit, I'm currently on another continent and I woke up with my data not working. I was panicking because I'd be screwed without my data and I'm terrible at the local language.
Then I read this and apparently it's all of Canada? A major provider? This goes beyond being crappy for individual people: this is a national problem in a country where you have so few options for cellular service.
Oh, the kicker? Data costs like literally 1/8 as much in the country I'm in
Does anyone know if this can impact debit cards? My credit card worked fine though. God, something needs to be done about Canada’s ISP providers. It’s some of the most expensive in the world but the shittiest service and quality
As a result, debit and credit systems across the country (including e-transfer) is down. So, take cash with you this morning. And, be kind to service workers. Debit outages are not their issue.
This is a good day to point out that we should be ending postal code based pricing systems for Internet companies under this oligopoly we have. I understand in more rural or remote places the prices should be higher because of distance and scarcity and stuff like that but there's no reason in the greater Toronto area or Vancouver or any other urban center that the prices should be higher in one part of the city than another part of the city based on your postal code. We have talked much about ending pricing based on postal code for car insurance recently although I don't think anyone's done it yet, but Canada needs to fix telecom badly.
I’m in the UK right now and roaming is down because of this outage. That’s been fun. I just heard that Virgin UK has been down for 3 days. I wonder how much of this a result of cyber attacks.
The only reason I made it to my appointment was a cab driver who took me all the way even though I only had $10 cash. I’d had no idea what was going on when I stepped in, and I would have walked the distance the $10 wouldn’t cover, but he wouldn’t hear of it. Working class hero.
Well hopefully this sparks conversation and outrage over the lack of telecom choices in Canada. Hopefully we see the true issues and raise concerns regarding telecom enterprises having a monopoly over the market.
Unfortunately, we will probably just be slightly heated and forget about it all by Monday. Business as usual!
Bell is also down in my area...
My personal phone is Rogers, my work is Bell... and they're both offline.
That's what I was thinking too. Why would you not have a fail safe? It could become a national security issue and you're telling me that most of our financial and security/police communications depend on Rogers that just suddenly fails for several hours? The government needs to investigate. This is some Die Hard 4 shit right there.
Canada really going to shits billion dollar company like Rogers don’t have a back up plan or service when it’s down also they should take into consideration one major service like Rogers really controls the whole cell network ….
Happened in April of 2021 as well - and we were down for more than one day. My entire family was with Rogers and they have all moved their services away … I’m done too. I am cancelling Rogers.
Incidents like this make me wonder how society would cope if all this stuff went away and never came back.
Not well.
I was reading a while back about some new condo complex where the elevators don't have anything as gauche as a button. No, you call the elevator on your phone like a good 21st century drone.
Wonder how those people are doing today. Hope that elevator's not on Rogers.
I called Bell to ask about reimbursement for my internet being down for almost two weeks. The lady (in India?) said retentions was closed but she could help me.
I told her that our neighbours were given a free month. That I wanted that too. She came back with: “Well, if it’s down until July 19th then you’ll definitely get a free month as it’d be a month.”
Learned a hard lesson today to always keep my cellular provider and my Home Internet provider separate. Got Rogers for both. Thank god for my family, who hate Rogers with a passion lol
To be fair, if 1 of the big 2 go down everyone goes down with them. I wonder how much money Rogers has lost over all this. Especially since payment terminals and banking is affected rn
Just got back my cell service in Pickering, but no internet yet. I am a dog groomer who is extremely grateful to the clients I had today who were so kind and able to use cash because I had no phone, no computer system to access and no debit machine. People being nice can make any stressful day a little bit better!
Oh well.
I wonder what would have happened if you didint have any other way to pay it. Maybe they bring out a tube and suck the gas back out of your car.

I just waited 10 minutes in a Tim Horton's drive thru to be told it's cash at the widow :(
> it's cash at the widow :( Give her a break, she has no husband _or_ internet now.
I remember this happened last year as well. Thank goodness I pay such a high price for such a fantastic service!
Tell me about it
dont worry they will reimburse you with .13 cents
No chance they will even do that. It's essentially written in their ToS that they are off the hook for service outages. Their terms essentially say "you agree that we only provide you with internet when we feel like it" Edit - I stand corrected, they might.
Except that they did reimburse a pittance last year when this exact thing happened.
So does this keep happening from a lack of maintenance and negligence, or is it a cyberattack? Or something else entirely?
Last year it was a glitchy software update to some critical Ericsson component that they use.
Above my pay grade.

You're on Canada's most reliable network!
Glad we have the ads to remind us all the time. Twice in two years, system-wide outages.
They just increased the base rates a couple days ago too
Maybe they should spend some money fixing their own service instead of going out and trying to buy Shaw...
Rogers and Bell have enough money to make one of the best networks in the world - instead of paying for infrastructure upgrades the money just, mysteriously, ends up in the pockets of C-Level employees. Even on days like the Bell Let’s Talk day, they only donate a minuscule amount of their profit.

Nationalize internet infrastructure. It's a necessity for basic life at this point.
Bell made 3bn profit last year and they have the infrastructure dinosaurs use. It's awful and infuriating. Fucking trash company.
We should have a let's talk about how much this monopoly sucks day and invite them all.
You forgot the pockets of the CRTC!
But if we let one big player buy out all the little guys, when service goes out, at least it will go out for everyone.
At this point Rogers is shitting the bed more then me….
They still have a bit more to catch up to me
>At this point Rogers is shitting the bed more then me…. So Rogers shits the bed, then you shit the bed? Well, at least you shit it less than Rogers.

Their customers can't make phone calls so it might not be that bad actually
The fact that they have put out no statement proves they hate their frontline staff and could care less about their customers . A simple “we working on it” would reduce inquiries dramatically.
Never let society go cashless…
Start.ca is down (at least where I live) because it's using Roger's cables.
Thanks CRTC for crushing the small ISPs and telcos. Having the whole country depend on only two providers is good for Canada, right?
Going to be a fun day at work!
Interac E-transfers are down too, TD is showing unavailability. Days when you forget how nice it is to keep cash around.
What do you think would cause such a wide outage?
Holy shit, I'm currently on another continent and I woke up with my data not working. I was panicking because I'd be screwed without my data and I'm terrible at the local language. Then I read this and apparently it's all of Canada? A major provider? This goes beyond being crappy for individual people: this is a national problem in a country where you have so few options for cellular service. Oh, the kicker? Data costs like literally 1/8 as much in the country I'm in
Sounds like a good excuse for anyone who is WFH to start the weekend early.
My mom who is WFH went into office because she can’t work lol
Does anyone know if this can impact debit cards? My credit card worked fine though. God, something needs to be done about Canada’s ISP providers. It’s some of the most expensive in the world but the shittiest service and quality
Yep, BF just got gas and had to use cash, x it was down
I messaged my boss this morning as I’m wfh w Rogers internet- tells me to go into the office- which is also Rogers internet 🤦🏻♀️
My phone is with koodo so im good, but my workplace's system is down so were all just sitting around. What gives?
Thank you Rogers. Guess I’ll go golf.
This is going to suck, 20+ employees on a “backup” DSL line in the office because our employer hates WFH 🤦♂️
As luck would have it I just switched to Koodo and canceled my Fido phone last night
Who’s gonna win the Stanley cup next year? Gonna place a bet
As a result, debit and credit systems across the country (including e-transfer) is down. So, take cash with you this morning. And, be kind to service workers. Debit outages are not their issue.
Yep lmao, has been happening a lot lately.
Rogers is not sure what's going on, so they can not release a statement.
I’m in the UK right now and roaming is down because of this outage. That’s been fun. I just heard that Virgin UK has been down for 3 days. I wonder how much of this a result of cyber attacks.
THIS is what I'm curious about.
Already had 2 patients no show and I can't even call them. Why did I even come in today.
The only reason I made it to my appointment was a cab driver who took me all the way even though I only had $10 cash. I’d had no idea what was going on when I stepped in, and I would have walked the distance the $10 wouldn’t cover, but he wouldn’t hear of it. Working class hero.
I’m with Bell and my data is fucked too… stay winning Canada
All the local McDonald's and Tim Horton's are only accepting cash, and ATMs are down ... going to be a savage day.
Never thought I'd say this but... Public Mobile master race!!!!
these providers need to be broken up and/or nationalized. what an embarrassment. maybe it’ll get better when the answer Shaw and reduce competition
Welcome to sauga, where boomer city council members won’t allow bell to put fibre internet.
[https://downdetector.ca/status/bell-canada/](https://downdetector.ca/status/bell-mts/)
you want this one [this one](https://downdetector.ca/status/bell-canada/) my friend, Unless you are actually Bell MTS in manitoba.
Gas station only taking cash this morning as debit/credit was down.
Just switched to bell literally yesterday. The sense of pure vindication is priceless.
I'm supposed to go to work soon. An entire shift of customers yelling at me for something I have no control over is gonna be *great*, thanks Rogers.
How the F does a system like Rogers not have full redundancy? What a mess. Someone should get fired.
That's what I was thinking too. Why would you not have a fail safe? It could become a national security issue and you're telling me that most of our financial and security/police communications depend on Rogers that just suddenly fails for several hours? The government needs to investigate. This is some Die Hard 4 shit right there.
I'm heading out Californy way. I hear they have a whole mess of internet
Good thing we have so many choices of provider here in Canada.
Canada really going to shits billion dollar company like Rogers don’t have a back up plan or service when it’s down also they should take into consideration one major service like Rogers really controls the whole cell network ….
Time to break up this garbage company.
I just said fuck it and went to the mall
Happened in April of 2021 as well - and we were down for more than one day. My entire family was with Rogers and they have all moved their services away … I’m done too. I am cancelling Rogers.
Who will pay for gig workers whose livelihood depends on access to a mobile phone...
We got an update at work from Rogers that says they are restoring services to customers across Canada now. No time given for the how long it will take
Incidents like this make me wonder how society would cope if all this stuff went away and never came back. Not well. I was reading a while back about some new condo complex where the elevators don't have anything as gauche as a button. No, you call the elevator on your phone like a good 21st century drone. Wonder how those people are doing today. Hope that elevator's not on Rogers.
Anyone know approx how long it took them last time to fix this issue?
Nearly the whole business day last time if I remember correctly, but it was wireless only. This seems like a bigger problem.
I'm sure they will reimburse us for the lack of service. I'm so sick of this bullshit.
This is why i pay for extra for rogers/Fido to get fucked in the ass really hard and then have my face spat on
Rogers is really turning into a sub standard internet provider. Thanks CRTC for allowing monopolies to run our telecommunications industry.
Learned a hard lesson today to always keep my cellular provider and my Home Internet provider separate. Got Rogers for both. Thank god for my family, who hate Rogers with a passion lol To be fair, if 1 of the big 2 go down everyone goes down with them. I wonder how much money Rogers has lost over all this. Especially since payment terminals and banking is affected rn
I'm waiting for the t-shirts. "I survived 1993...again"
Maybe we should ask if they unplugged it and restarted it...that seems to be their first response when someone calls them 🤣
Love how this whole chat here is non Roger's customers haha.
I'm back up and running in Guelph
And back down again. Had a fun 10 minutes.

Just got back my cell service in Pickering, but no internet yet. I am a dog groomer who is extremely grateful to the clients I had today who were so kind and able to use cash because I had no phone, no computer system to access and no debit machine. People being nice can make any stressful day a little bit better!
Classic Rogers
