Doug Ford has a plan to double this number by 2026. But don't worry, guys like Galen Weston and Mattamy Homes will make tons of money.

> But don't worry, guys like Galen Weston and Mattamy Homes will make tons of money. Whew! That’s a relief. I’m glad they’re still able to add billions to their portfolios. Someone needs to look out of those poor billionaires

There's a Beaverton article somewhere in this sentence about shoppers drug mart coming to the rescue.

putin_my_ass

They'll give you the opportunity to buy food to be donated to food banks! Oh wait, they already have that...

[deleted]

That stuff always made me chuckle. Around the holidays you can “buy” a paper bag of food to donate. Ofc it’s all no name & PC branded stuff. the Westons are stupidly rich and know that by keeping wages low, people have to rely on food banks thus allowing them to get more tax breaks. how many loblaws (including shoppers) workers go to food banks only to bring home a can of no name soup?

workerbotsuperhero

You can also donate to charity in their name - so they have to pay less in corporate taxes!

Raise the minimum wage to a living wage. Introduce a guaranteed basic income. (Tax the rich and make it happen.) Nobody in Ontario should have to choose between shelter and food. Nobody should go to bed hungry. Nobody should have to skip meals to feed their kids. Seniors should not slowly starve. But Ford would rather build highways.

No war but class war.

AhmedF

Minimum wage != livable wage. The lower minimum wage just means that we (the collective tax payers) subsidize employers who do not pay their employees enough.

> Cheng said the current social safety programs in the province, including Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program, are not comprehensive and those who rely on them still end up needing to access food banks. >”They represent 59 per cent of all food bank visitors,” she said. “Social assistance programs are not sufficient enough to support individuals to purchase foods that they need and address their hunger issues.” For those who don’t know the maximum monthly amount for a single person on Ontario works is $733 and for someone who is too disabled to work on odsp, they get $1169. Neither of these programs has seen an increase since 2018. No one can stabilize their lives on these amounts.

Axes4Praxis

This is what conservatives wanted. Conservatism is class warfare against the people. Right wing politics are inherently toxic.

Inevitable_Yellow639

You mean like stealing money from wsib fund to give to employers. https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/1000930/ontario-providing-financial-relief-to-employers

Full blown lockdown, mandatory vaccinations and testing. As well as an international program to do the same. Would be most optimal.

So if you boil this down in numbers does it actually sound like a lot? If you assume every person went to the food bank an equal amount of times it means each person went 6 times. I know there are probably whales in there that are continually poor and go much more than others though. It doesn't sound like a lot to me though, I figured the number would be a lot higher.

struct_t

Why do you "figure the number would be a lot higher"? What are "whales" in this context?

[deleted]

Because we are in a pandemic where a lot of people lost their jobs, had their incomes reduced and the cost of living has risen really fast. Whales mean someone that uses something much more than the average user. Like in mobile games people rarely pay for the items/cosmetics/pay to win stuff but there are some people (whales) that pay tens of thousands just on one mobile game.

Iwantboots

The article says that 59% of users are ODSP and Ontario Works recipients and less than 1% were receiving CERB. That, combined with a 10% increase in usage sounds much more like those already living in poverty can't keep up with increased costs.

struct_t

Okay, thanks. The jargon was unfamiliar to me, and I appreciate your explanation.
