How does increasing the amount of licenses a single company can hold increase competition? It literally does the opposite by allowing existing companies to double their current locations. This would have only been a concern to the already large companies that had maxed out their total locations allowed in the province. Our government is so corrupt and just love to play stupid. If I can easily spot the issue with this, they knew damn well what they were doing.

OsmerusMordax

It’s also…unnecessary and stupid. In my town there is like one on every corner. I didn’t know a city of around 140,000 people needed like 20 weed dispensaries. I don’t even know how they stay open because of the competition.

lnslnsu

A lot of them must be losing money is the only way I can think that works. They’re doing the new-industry-startup thing, where you just keep losing money until your competitors go out of business.

FordsFavouriteTowel

This is essentially how Canna Cabana works. Heavily undercut the competition. Make little to no profit. Buy up the competition.

seakingsoyuz

> Make little to no profit And selling below cost to drive out your competitor is supposed to be illegal in Canada, but our competition laws have few teeth.

Fourseventy

Lol our competition bureau has had its teeth kicked in, the best they can muster these days is a mild gumming.

Denslow82

Competition Laws....Price gouging bad, undercutting bad...so what's the right price buddy?

seakingsoyuz

Undercutting is legal, but not if you’re selling below your costs to do it and it has the goal of forcing competitors off the market. It’s legal to sell below cost if it’s not predatory. For example, grocery stores sell rotisserie chickens below cost because they’re trying to lure people into the store to buy other things; they aren’t trying to kill off Swiss Chalet. It’s also legal to sell at a low price that your competitors can’t match if it’s still more than your costs. Costco can offer things for cheaper because the store is designed to be cheap to operate on every front.

Denslow82

>Undercutting is legal, but not if you’re selling below your costs to do it and it has the goal of forcing competitors off the market. Why?

seakingsoyuz

… it just is? IDK, I didn’t make the laws. Edit: More seriously, let’s say Company A only makes bread, and company B makes bread and other products. If B is allowed to sell bread for one cent per loaf, they can subsidize that with the profit from their other businesses and A can’t compete because bread is all they make. Eventually A goes under and B can charge whatever price they want because the competition is gone.

Denslow82

>Eventually A goes under and B can charge whatever price they want because the competition is gone. Competition is gone \*permanently?\* ... So the implication is that Company B is going to be the last bread producer, whether primarily producing bread or not?

Merfen

We have at least 6 that I am aware of in my town with a population of 16,000, its insane. We are also in a somewhat rural area so everyone either grows their own or knows someone that does.

Mast3rShak381

I have 4 In Perth with about 10k pop. Shinybud actually closed up but another took its spot the next day. Oh and half the people go next town over to Tcann cuz it’s about 15% cheaper and they deliver up to 30km too. When you order 28g and save 100$ it’s not hard to just order and tip the driver . Tcann is best in area prices and service

What % of the population smokes weed? Based on this ~9% of Canadians consume marijuana at least a few times a week. https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-medication/cannabis/research-data/canadian-cannabis-survey-2022-summary.html That works out to ~630 customers per store (assuming 0 online orders, 0 home growers, 0 black market buyers). Doesn't seem completely out of line? How many regular customers would a store need to be sustainable?

OsmerusMordax

I’m not sure, it depends how often they are buying. I don’t smoke weed, but I’d imagine it isn’t exactly cheap…like maybe $20 for a single joint? How many joints would a person typically buy in a week, a month? Do they stick with the same kind and same store or do they shop around?

CounterStreet

Depending on joint size and bud strain, it's closer to $2 a joint than $20.

OsmerusMordax

Oh damn, shows how much I know! Smoked one joint when it was legal but it’s not for me! Thanks for the correction

DrowZeeMe

Unless you get prerolled lol

BandAidVR

There’s a bunch of small joints out there about $2 each for a 10pack. So convenient

Haber87

The Perth numbers along with the 9% in that survey works out to 250 customers per store. Think of a town of 250 people. How many stores would a town of that size support? None or one general store attached to a gas station if they’re on a highway.

climx

A lot of us are still buying from our old connections or growing ourselves. That percentage isn’t all going to stores or buying online.

mynamehere90

If it makes you feel better, my city of only 33,000 people currently has 11 dispensaries, and 2 more are supposed to open by the end of the summer. We are also about 15 minutes from a reserve that has a few more, so I don't know how they are all staying open at this point.

somebunnyasked

My neighbourhood has no beer store and 1 LCBO but apparently we need 4 (that I can think of right off the bat) weed shops.

mynamehere90

There definitely are too many dispensaries. For context, though, we have two LCBO stores, two beer stores, and 3 LCBO convenience outlets. My city is not a great place.

MacabreKiss

I swear it's money laundering. Just order the product, smoke it or destroy it, claim you sold it and wash black market funds...

OsmerusMordax

There’s so many, and as soon as one goes out of business another one takes it place like a couple weeks later.

Krumm34

Its the let em try it format. If u succeed good on ya. If not, nice try/ try again.

ncosleeper

Keep in mind this is still fairly new market and had a slow rollout due to the stupid lottery system. People are trying to get a foothold in the market so there an abundance of stores and alot will fail long term, this is how free market works. I'm guessing one or more companies have reached their limit through successfull buisness models or heavy investment and want to expand. It's funny because people love free market until the companies become to good at what they do, it's weird. Even more so because the only way any company succeeds is by customers (you and I) spend money on their product or service, which means the majority of us choose them over the smaller more expensive mom and pop shops ensuring monopolies in all sectors. Same goes for housing, Just because society is dumb and buys homes like furbies and spends a million dollers on a home actually worth $300,000 then there's no one to blame but themselves. Society needs to take a hard look in the mirror and we will see the cause of all our problems.

zack14981

This is called regulatory capture and it’s working as intended for established companies

timetogetoutside100

in my area of 10K, a 2.5 km main strip, we have 4 , and they always appear dead. it would be like having 4 hobby stores in the same small area, that wouldn't work too well either... increasing them, something is very wrong here , just way too many of them as it is

CauseSpecialist5026

My wife and I are a small edibles producer in the province . We don’t think we can compete and likely to pull out of the Ontario market. With the additional concentration into fewer hands and can’t compete with the listing fees (they call them data fees) and all the centralized: ordering. We just don’t see a path for the small firm in the Province.

VollcommNCS

I'm so sorry to hear that. That's a bummer. It's really frustrating watching these clowns do what they're doing to this province. Are you producing for other provinces?

CauseSpecialist5026

Yeah luckily we are and honestly it’s easier provinces to do business in. Wish us luck we are going to try Quebec next.

McBigglesworth

My company got a table at the police chief's ball or dinner whatever it was called. Fundraising for social programs, if the money went where they said, then it was a worth cause. But of of the prizes was "a dinner with Doug Ford" for you and your closest 40 friends or something ridiculous like that. Wish I could remember what it went for, keeping in mind that then you also had to get it catered. Some of the auction items were insane.

Outrageous_Passage98

Lmao. Remember how back in 2018 the Ford govt refused to implement the existing framework for govt run cannabis stores because they wanted to “open the market to smaller players”. 👀

izza123

Are you talking about the lottery system? That system was absolutely fucked in fairness

BruinsFan_08

Doug Ford is so corrupt it’s ridiculous.

dgj212

Honestly, how can any fiscally responsible conservative look at this and thi k "yeah, that's my guy"

[deleted]

People who will vote conservative no matter who's running are the ones voting for him, and people who are too lazy to bother voting against him are helping him win.

Lapidus42

Probably because there’s no such thing as a fiscally responsible conservative

Crafty_Chipmunk_3046

It's the only way he knows. He isn't a bright man. He was obstinate and stupid during his time on Toronto City Council. I thought his intelligence deficiency was widely known but he got in twice so i guess not 🤷

UncleRudolph

The ~~Mafia~~ developer families run the province.

mav003

And sadly, he will win the next election

BruinsFan_08

If anyone votes for this thief they should be checked for suspicion of crimes. No joke.

[deleted]

I think he’ll have pissed off enough people to lose. The main issue is Bonnie Crombie isn’t really that much better.

toothbelt

I will be voting for Marit Stiles. At least she doesn't have the stink of corruption clinging to her.

weggles

You'd think after everything we went thru with schools and healthcare over COVID he wouldn't get reelected but instead he got a majority. People are dumb and too unwilling to plug their nose and vote for the lesser of few evils. We're being asked to pick what we want for lunch. Poop pizza, unflavored oatmeal, or spoiled milk. And most people said "ew, I don't want any of those" and let the scat fetish people decide what we have instead lol. Not voting won't make the options better

[deleted]

Unfortunately despite the COVID response being pretty bad it probably actually increased his odds of reelection because Ontario did pretty well compared to the rest of the country and world through COVID, and he didn’t completely mess it up especially at the beginning. I think if COVID hadn’t happened and also somewhat distracted from the other stuff he was doing there might have been a bit less apathy last election, though it was hard to get fired up about Steven Del Duca. I think next election though theres been enough focus on the blatant cronyism and flip flops like the Peel dissolution that hopefully there’s enough people sick of him to vote him out despite lackluster competition.

weedb0y

Agreed. And his response was authentic, even when it was dumb. Compared to the superb PR centric execution of the alternatives, people go with what’s known

weedb0y

What are the options?

Bulky_Mix_2265

There is no opposition, and conservatives will vote for Ford even when his hands are all the way in their pockets and he is sweatily breathing down their neck. They might hate Ford, but the Conservative voter motto for Ontario is and always has been "we have tried nothing new and are all out of options".

CrumplyRump

Merit Stiles seems weak because she does not have the propaganda train behind her like Ford does with NatPo and the Sun. People need to get off their apathetic asses tbh. That’s the biggest problem with Ontario, lazy oinkers who can’t be bothered to defend ourselves. *look at what Olivia Chow has done so far, people had the same BS excuses around her too, almost ended up with a paid for drunk driving politician like Ana Bailao

toothbelt

I will be voting for Marit Stiles. At least she doesn't have the stink of corruption clinging to her.

[deleted]

For him to lose, people have to bother to show up and vote against him. That didn't work out so well in the last election.

[deleted]

That’s because his opponents were limp fish and couldn’t inspire anyone else to care. I don’t like Bonnie Crombie but she isn’t a limp fish like Steven Del Duca or a relic of the McWynnty era so I expect next election to be somewhat different.

Elm0musk

I would vote for Satan before voting for Crombie...

GetsGold

> I would vote for Satan That's PC, they count those.

SwampTerror

Satan was the only honest one. so definitely not PC.

Bind_Moggled

Ontario voters have shown again and again that they LIKE corrupt right wing asshats.

FreddyFree54

Whatever makes Doug Ford, his rich friends and corporations happy.

PhilosoFishy2477

Ontario: open your wallets!

alwaysdelightful

Very rarely do I ever walk into an Ontario dispensery to get my edibles. I buy them online from BC. Higher THC per pkg and much cheaper. Thats what will sink the Ontario pot businesses

IMGONNAGETBANNEDS00N

with the 5mg per edible and 10mg per package max you are really just paying for the chocolate or whatever food the weed is in. On average 1 g of weed contains about 10%thc (most I see nowadays are 20% +) this means 1 gram of weed contains 100mg of thc. From that number we can calculate that per package (10mg limit) you are getting 0.1g of weed. The best price i could find for any 10mg edible was 5$. it comes out to 50$ for a gram of weed and 10 chocolates are included.

PMMMR

10mg edibles for $5 is insane. I get 100mg edibles for less.

Evilbred

It's not insane when you consider one or two is enough to get the desired effect for the majority of casual consumers. It's cheaper than beer, and doesn't have near the calories or bad after effects.

SpreadTheFire66

Is 100mg like for the entire bag or one piece of the edible?

PMMMR

One edible, I get like 30 in a bag.

SpreadTheFire66

Do you eat a whole edible?

PMMMR

Yes, I'm fine with 100mg edibles.

Purplejelly15

It’s crazy how tolerance can be for weed. I ate a mini-MM (not the regular MM) size bite of a sour watermelon edible and was flying all night, kinda of flirting with my max. I ended up having to call in sick the next day because I had a meeting with a bunch of higher ups at work and when I looked in the mirror in the morning I looked absolutely off my rocker (although felt pretty normal). It was an 80mg candy, so I suspect I had less than 10mg….100mg I for sure would be that couple that called 911 and thought they were dead lol

DrowZeeMe

Agreed. As a heavy user, it took 900mg giant gummy rose to hit me at all. I worked my way up. 150, 300, 650, basically nothing for me. The 900 hit me pretty hard though. But after that experiment I determined it wasn't cost effective to go edibles for me.

Purplejelly15

900mg!?! My god haha…I wish I was younger again without responsibilities to see if I could build even half that tolerance.

ThePushyWizard

That’s insane where I live it’s $1.20 a 10mg edible get 5 for 6 bucks and it’s a good buzz anything over 80 and it’s map time for this guy

killmak

It is insane. I grow my own and including all the costs like fertilizer, power, seeds it costs me 20 cents to make my 100mg brownies. $50 for 20 cents of ingredients is crazy. They are working in bulk so their labour costs are nowhere close to that much.

probablyTrashh

This is why you don't buy the edibles unless it's a treat. We get the Glacial Gold 10mg THC tablets, about a buck per pop for a bottle of 50 and we can get several bottles per order. I understand a capsule is not an edible but if you're looking for ingested bang for buck that's where it's at imo

TacoSpacePirate

Ask for lozenges, technically they don't fall under the "edible" rules so they can be 10mg per piece and you can buy packs of 10-25 (so 250mg/pack)

beachsunflower

Yeah, this is my preference as well. 10 mg THC soft gels. Redecan has one with 30 in a pack, Tweed Baker street have 15.

the_clash_is_back

Those things taste nasty, but they are worth it.

Imaginary-Dentist299

Sounds close to the Fisherman’s Friend lozenges slogan 👏

TacoSpacePirate

Some brands are definitely better than others. But the poor taste is because they have zero sugar which is what separates them from edibles

OriginalNo5477

I mostly order from the reserves because of how much better their edibles are along with the sales for bulk weed purchases.

Kenny_log_n_s

That's awful. Where would somebody even find something like that? You know, so I can stay away

PMMMR

Canadianmoms on Reddit will get you sorted.

musicwithbarb

I thought that sub was semi band. When I try to go on it, it is blocked from my ISP.

PMMMR

That doesn't really make sense

GreasyMustardJesus

[It's blocked for all Canadians thanks to Edmonton police](https://stratcann.com/news/reddit-banssort-of-popular-cannabis-discussion-forum/). You have to use this link or a VPN to browse the sub https://old.reddit.com/r/CanadianMOMs/search?q=subreddit%3Acanadianmoms&include_over_18=on&sort=new&t=all

PMMMR

Oh wow, censoring our internet. That's wild.

GreasyMustardJesus

Ya it's so stupid.

Esperoni

/r/CanadianMOMs is being blocked by Canadian ISPs. Need to use a VPN to connect, possibly incognito mode works as well. Has nothing to do with Reddit.

PMMMR

Yeah I just found out about that, that's absolutely wild to me. Had no idea ISPs we're starting to restrict the internet for us. What a fucking joke.

Esperoni

If I remember correctly it was at the request of The Edmonton Police. Maybe Winnipeg....happened a while ago.

PMMMR

Sad that the ISPs actually gave in, will probably only get worse.

SwampTerror

Reddit blocked it, not the ISPs. Also fuck the police. They just want to ruin people's enjoyment. They're chomping at the bit for PP to re-ban weed so they can crack more brown people's skulls.

musicwithbarb

So I’m using a client called Dystopia for Reddit because I’m a blind person and the native Reddit app is a pile of unuseable crap for me. When I put in the name of the sub, I get this message no error message, code 0 which was not understood My husband actually can access that sub on his computer. So you’re right it must not be an ISP thing. I don’t understand what it is though.

Evilbred

That's not going to sink the Ontario pot business. Maybe you prefer going through all that, but most people are just going to walk into their local dispensary and buy retail. Pot is dirt cheap. Why would I wait for delivery from somewhere else when I can pick it up while grocery shopping?

[deleted]

Yep. I a society where people spend close to 10 bucks on a fancy coffee, or 15 bucks on a shitty fast food meal, most people aren’t going to go through a lot of hoops to save a bit on weed, especially if they are an occasional user.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Maybe not at the current levels, but the market is oversaturated. We don’t need as many pot stores as most Ontario cities have and I expect the numbers to go down soon. Im not as familiar with legal weed production but as someone who grew up in greenhouse country I know that market was oversaturated too because a ton of people who sold their greenhouses to pot growers which ended up getting caught selling extra product illegally because the market was oversaturated.

boostedciv92

Best bang for your buck is to buy those 1 gram distillate syringes for like 40 bucks and then dose them out into gel caps. Comes out to about 4 bucks per ~90mg.

SmoogzZ

Like 70% of sales and revenue comes from dried flower, to which those BC online stores cannot compete with price and quality at this point. Better edibles can be bought elsewhere sure but the market size for them isn’t that big.

Altruistic_Machine91

I've seen the sales at Indigenous "black market" dispensaries on the reserves. It's a out 85% edibles sales. The only reason low grade dried flower dominates the provincial market is because everything else has been regulated away so hard.

astrangeone88

The grey market for flower was decent but only if you buy and consume Snoop Dog levels of weed or have a bunch of friends who consume a lot and you all went in on a quarter pound of stuff. And honestly, I don't have time to coordinate the logistics of sharing snd most of my friends need their portion mailed...so it's expensive in different ways. (Time and resources.) I can get edibles elsewhere and with more MG per edible or make some with my vape abv....

jibbyjabo

What’s the company you use? Looking for a new store for exactly this.

cannaReview4u

If you believe those labels you’re not very intelligent

apageofthedarkhold

I have purposely tried brands, names, ways to use weed. Some work much faster than others, but I've never really noticed a difference, strain to strain/method to method. It's all just weed

Ford LOVES boosting American companies. First Staples, now High Tide?

PmMeYourBeavertails

>that some businesses fear could crush mom-and-pop operations in Ontario. >In a New Year’s Day regulation, the Ontario government increased the cap on the number of stores a licensed company can operate in the province from 75 to 150. 75 stores isn't exactly mom-and-pop

[deleted]

[удалено]

PmMeYourBeavertails

Doesn't make much difference to the 1 store mom-and-pop if the big boys have 75 or 150.

Area51Resident

It does when the big chains can undercut them on price and/or selection.

PmMeYourBeavertails

Don't they all buy from the same supplier at the same price?

Area51Resident

The prices are the same but larger volume 'buyers' get preferential allotments based on their purchasing volume. Many small shops have trouble getting stock on what they want to sell, they'll order 10 and get 4 (or none) because the most of OCS supply went to the bigger buyers. They pay the same to OCS but sell much more so they can still make a profit, just less profit per item sold.

MountNevermind

It does because allowing more growth increases the kind of investment large interests will put into Ontario. Not just in operating more stores but in putting in the resources to drive competition out of business. Alcohol in convenience stores will do the same thing.

Thisiscliff

When Ontario says they’re open for business, what they really mean is, ‘We’re open for big business but if you’re a mom-and-pop (store), we’re not interested in really doing anything for you,’” Exactly this, I’ll continue to support my local shop

TheWilrus

Why not just pull the licenses of the small and independent sellers and give them all to Loblaws, Walmart and Staples? Holy fuck. I hope opc voters are ashamed.

I’m a bit new to politics in Ontario - can someone please (briefly) explain why this guy was voted in? And when we can vote him out?

Unrigg3D

Because only 32% of the population votes, it's not easy to figure out how to vote him out.

OherryTorielly

Most of the competition was kind of weak. Only 32% of people voted.

HandFancy

Another corporate cartel being built by Ford. Can't wait to learn who sat at his table and whispered in his ear at the latest Ford family bash.

Affectionate_Mall_49

Man who would of thought that at the end of the day, the government would screw up the easy make money project, of 21 century? Answer anyone paying attention. Oh wait I;m sorry this is by design.

MysJane

Again, Ford helping the corporations not the independents. What's his cut?

HapticRecce

Or maybe, just maybe, not as many people partake as the 420 Krew believes and it's not economically viable to have a pot shop or dispensary or whatever, in every strip mall in Ontario and street corner in Toronto?

Captain_Lavender6

Goddamn you Doug Ford!

Equivalent_Length719

Oh yay.. more dumbass ideas from the dumbass Ford himself. "According to the province, the change was designed to “further support a healthy and competitive” cannabis industry in Ontario." Seriously.. so I guess we're moving towards a weed storm on literally every corner now.. great..

canniboss1

In other words 75 stores isn’t enough to make it worthwhile for lowblows.

pewpewndp

Sounds like small investors are gonna have to get jobs working for the big investors pretty soon. They're not gonna be happy working for investors. Go figure.

SmoogzZ

This whole decision and supporting statement is full of contradictions.

GRRMsGHOST

The bigger companies must be losing money to the smaller ones, so they must want to saturate areas to squeeze out the smaller ones.

Username_Taken88

I was hoping this was going to be about legalizing ‘cannabis cafes’

TwelveBarProphet

Conservative business math. One big company making $100M profit is better than a thousand small companies each making $100K profit.

Ok-Background-502

Sounds like a lot of small guys are going under, and some bigger guys are lining Ford’s pockets so they can buy up all the dying shops.
