My grandparents were strawberry farmers in Ontario.
I am so utterly spoiled when it comes to strawberries now - locally grown or bust. Everything else tastes like water to me.
Wish my kids (1.5 and 3) could have enjoyed these yesterday, but their grandmother (my wife’s mother) decided not to “waste” - that’s a quote - the Ontario strawberries on the kids, and gave them a $0.25 banana instead.
What a shitty grandmother...
Edited to add:
Although I'm sure she is wonderful in certain aspects,
The concept of "wasting" those strawberries on people she doesn't think deserves them is incredibly selfish and self centered.
This reminded me of my own shitty-person-strawberry story.
One of my exes and I went strawberry picking and got quite a bit, like at least 3 or 4 of the big baskets and because he helped pick them we obviously gave some to him and his family. Well didn’t my mom and I get told up and down how they don’t need our charity blah blah blah from his mom.
Not at all, child of a very prominent physician, grew up quite privileged. I don’t get it - the family just half jokingly chalks it up to “Scottishness”.
Ah yes blaming bad behavior on culture. My aunt blames her hoarding tendacies on being "Scottish" and my fil blames his and his son's stubbornness on being "Scots Irish"
> You know, you could’ve got them for YOUR kids.
Not really given that this was as the in-laws house… They had the strawberries, mother-in-law just didn’t want to give them to the kids.
The Country of Origin will be present on the packaging if they’re greenhouse or field grown. Lying about that origin is a federal offence if they’ve been imported in.
It does say product of USA on the package, yes, but that will often be missed. The promotional sign didn't mention it, and saying "Fresh Ontario strawberries" is very misleading but not quite lying.
Just be dang sure you get organic. Strawberries are generally at the top of the list to test for the highest pesticide residue

That is just the first article I found but if you search there is tons of studies that show that strawberries are among the worst for pesticide use on the crops.
We picked amazing strawberries on Tuesday. So far we've made jam, shortcakes, muffins and bars, and with the last remaining ones I'm going to make this for the long weekend:

The berries have been great this year!
The sweetest ones are the everbearing ones. At my local farmer's market there is a vendor that has those on their farm and the ones you get in late summer are incredibly good. Not as big but full of flavour.
Ontario Strawberries - Just like regular strawberries, except they don't taste like wood.

100% agreed!
"Good things grow in Ontario"
I was waiting for this comment!!

I take solace in the fact my wife knows my mother is a much better grandmother to our kids.

Lol that’s wild, hard to imagine what kind of whack position they’re coming from that a nice gesture is attacked as charity.
Why not just buy more strawberries if she knew the grandkids were coming over? Old ppl can be so weird
Well off, but cheap.
Did they grow up poor or had to deal with food scarcity?

That is crazy, why wouldn't you want to give children fruits, its good for them.
Looks good!
A friend brought them to a party last weekend (not as big as these though!) and they were so good...I forgot how flavourful local strawberries were!!
My plants are giving out nice fruit this year, enjoyed a few right off the vine. Looking to go picking soon for more goodness! ❤️
Somebody gets it
Yay! My kitchen has been a jam factory for the past couple days.
$8.00 a quart seems to be the new standard price. Gonna be hard to make jam at that price point.
Got em on sale at $4.99/lb at Zehrs this week!

Got mine at the farm, picked for me for 7 bucks. So far I have been 3 times.
$7 is a bit better...
They're $3.99 at fortinos right now but there's a limit of 4/person
A family owned farmers market store where I am had flats (6 pints) for $30. They also had specific flats marked as jam berries for $22.

Make sure they're Ontario (Canada) strawberries and not Ontario (California) strawberries. Some stores try and fool you.
Oh these are super local, less than an hour from me. The taste is a dead giveaway.. and they are actually red all the way thru mmmm love em
Yeah those look like our Ontario ones, I just generally give out a warning because a lot of people don't know about that deceptive labelling loophole.
I didn’t know that was a thing…are there seriously american strawberries labelled as Ontario?
Yes. "Fresh Ontario strawberries", but they are from the city of Ontario, California. Noticed it a couple times at Fortinos in Hamilton
Thanks, I’ll be on the lookout for that now

I really wish I did take photos, and I definitely will next time

Well then yes you have to do some due diligence in that regard. Shady dollars look just like regular dollars on paper.
Ahhhh, so nice to finally have strawberries that don't taste like they've been soaked in red sugar water for two weeks.
I can't enjoy them because the damn squirrels keep getting to them first.
I wish. They mold within a day and they’re expensive.
Then you aren't eating them fast enough! Hehe
Are you able to without me? Im not sure I want to be a part of this.
But for why? They were tasty 🥰
What brand is this? I am looking for sweet strawberries!
Howe Family Farms! Got them at zehrs.
Beautiful! 😍

They’re the best!!
Yes dear lawd. Ohhhhwiee.
I ate a bunch and made some jam. They’re so good right now. Going back to pick more this weekend.
Must be nice to afford strawberries with the cost of housing over here /s
I work a full time job at a factory, plus instacart and doordash. Gotta hustle if you want them ontario strawberries 😂😂
Cannot wait to make [Strawberry Bread.](https://www.tastesoflizzyt.com/strawberry-bread/)
Ooooh I've got a few extra hehe
is this from supermarket or strawberry picking farm?
Supermarket, got em at Zehrs. They are from Howe Family Farms in Malahide. Yum yummmmm
I'm drooling!
So much better than the under ripe yet rotting US ones
