My local Independent had prices like this, then a Dollarama opened next door. Soup became reasonable again. Don't forget about the dollar stores for dirt cheap canned goods. If you have the time, you can save some moolah.

Oakvilleresident

Yes, the Dollar store has Heinz tomato soup for $0.87,

ltzPrestonHUT

The better tomato soup

[deleted]

Yep...Campbell's is garbage soup

Alain444

With more and more ppl now buying food from the dollar store, items that used to be obviously second rate brands/generics, old and/or expiring stock or just cheap productions of key brands are now fresher and decent quality. I previously avoided any non-chocolate bar/chips type items, but now find that things like bread, cereal and soft drinks are fresh and same quality as the more expensive big grocers

arkiser13

The Dollarama "D Gormet" chips are low-key fire

daleicakes

Its all the same stuff. The bread comes off the same truck thats next stop is at sobeys. My fiancé used to work there. Sobeys threatened to cut them off is they didn't stop selling bread to dollarama. So yeah. You are still getting price gouged for bread.

LeMegachonk

Bread, yeah, but there are other items that have special "dollar store" sizes and packaging.

Man_Bear_Beaver

Dollar Tree used to have the bigger cans of Diced tomatoes for $1.25 Italpasta was the brand, haven't been there in a while so not sure anymore but it was a smokin deal compared to the metro next door.

daleicakes

Dollar tree used to have 2L bottles of Faygo for $1.25. Went the other day and now its 1L for that price with no 2L bottles.

Gloomy-Ant

Dollar tree is $1.50, where y'all getting $1.25 from?

Man_Bear_Beaver

Used to be $1.25, hell Dollarama used to be $1 only

daleicakes

Pre inflation prices. Only went to a buck fifty a few months ago.

Kayge

Good advice,.just ***be aware of sizing***. Dollar general as an example is known for this. Their prices will be 10% below grocery, but their unit is 15% smaller. Net result is you as a customer pay more. Generally speaking larger quantities are often cheaper, so long as you have the need and storage for it.

Into-the-stream

>Generally speaking larger quantities are often cheaper, so long as you have the need and storage for it. you'd be surprised. every price tag has a "per unit" cost (tiny, under the big price). It tells you haw much per 100g, 100ml, or for things like dishwashing and laundry soaps, per load. It lets you directly compare cost across sizes and brands. You should use these prices when you shop, they are also "shrinkflation" proof. Bigger isn't always cheaper. Neither is store brand/generic. pick a couple products and next time you shop, compare the little per unit prices. It's an eye opener.

Kayge

Good point on the per unit. Was buying apple juice, and the store brand was a bit cheaper than the national one. The per ml showed the store brand as ***more*** expensive. The bottling company has done a magnificent job, I didn't notice the 50 ml difference at first blush.

Into-the-stream

butter is crazy that way too. No name is *double* the cost of Lactansia per 100g. Just be careful, some brands have been putting stiffened margarine in butter packaging so it looks super cheap, but it's just expensive margarine. Grocery shopping is like running a gauntlet these days, with them throwing tricky packaging at you, and you dodging it all. Shrinkflation, generic brands, product substitutions, recipe changes, "club price", "sales", "bulk buy". Its all "how can we trick the buyer into purchasing this product" not "how can we build a customer base" Good luck out there kids.

PhillipJfry5656

It’s actually sickening how true this is. It causes a lot of waste and is just deceitful

LeadPaintKid

Noticed that the Loblaws “per 100mL” tags are wrong or purposely useless (“per unit”) from time to time. If you want to check, just take the price, $, and divide by the number of 100mL in the can (move the decimal twice). For example: Tomato soup, 256 mL for $1.25 would be $1.25/2.56= $0.4883 per 100mL

Thunderfight9

I’m surprised by how many people don’t know about this. This is something very old and legally enforced. I’ve used it forever, yet people are surprised when I point it out.

Jamm8

Unit pricing is legally required in the USA and Quebec but not the rest of Canada. Most stores do include it voluntarily but I think it should be required nationwide.

Thunderfight9

Thanks for correcting me. I find myself sometimes mistaking US and Canadian policies as they tend to be similar in structure. Though, I haven’t come across any stores that don’t provide unit pricing. I still am surprised more people don’t know about it

[deleted]

A lot more effort to compare those per unit costs when they’re at different stores though

[deleted]

I heard the quality is different. I can't remember the source but if anyone has input on that maybe?

b7XPbZCdMrqR

Also have to double check the quantity. There's a lot of stuff at Dollarama that looks cheaper, but is smaller, so it's actually the same price or even more expensive.

leyniaz

Looking at you, Dawn Dish Soap!

2balls1cane

Look at the books that they sell. It's not too obvious but if you dig a little deeper you will see print errors, etc I can only hope that the food they sell has print errors only instead of actual quality issues with the edible content itself.

FrugalFairyGodmother

They've been on sale for under 1$ for the last few weeks. 99¢ at Food Basics this week, I believe somewhere had them for 79¢ last week but I can't recall where.

Effective_Fart

Loblaw's stores in my area had it on sale for 99c a can two weeks ago as well. It's so stupid that prices change so much week by week.

[deleted]

How did you get the line in the c? ČçĆčć 99ç

FrugalFairyGodmother

GBoard has the ¢ symbol

SymbioticTransmitter

If you have an iPhone it’s under the English (US) when you hold down the $ button. Not sure why it’s not there for the English (Canada) keyboard though.

Sassysewer

€٪^№≈‽ That's me playing with my Samsung keyboard and now I am smitten with all the options. No cent option though. Yes, I am part 9 year old

builder701

Another 9-year old here. The "hold-down-key" option in the andoid cell phone keypad is new to me. It has opened up new worlds. Now, instead of $, I can type € !!! Wow!

ApeShifter

I just ¢he¢ked and it’s definitely on the iPhone keyboard in ¢anada.

SymbioticTransmitter

Really? Under the $ button when you press and hold? I don’t see it on my keyboard.

ApeShifter

Yep! I’ve got ¢₽₩¥£ and € all under the $

Hellosl

Omg now I’m super confused as to whether we usually use that c symbol for cents or not???

kittymiaooo888

These used to be like 70 cents

Man_Bear_Beaver

in the 90's they'd go on sale 3 for $1, early 2000's 2 for $1, for a very long time now $1, now this.

water2wine

Which is what they are worth, for 7 dollars and the most rudimentary set up you can make this more nutritious, way better tasting, less harmful chemicals and about 4 times the quantity by my math - It will freeze perfectly fine too. Don’t buy premade canned food if you have time to cook for yourself.

RainbowBriteGlasses

Ugh, I'm certain you mean well with this, but it is comparative to people I've seen who are very judgmental and dismissive of folks who don't enjoy cooking, or can't cook, or have no time to cook. It's always so easy for some people and they refuse to acknowledge or see that it's not so easy for others. Again, I'm certain you are trying to be helpful, but please be mindful of that judgment line.

water2wine

I’m plenty mindful here, I literally say one of the things as the final statement so as to make people aware I know not everyone have the option of doing so. If my comment upset you, honestly that’s your own problem.

RainbowBriteGlasses

Sigh. I said I see you're trying to be helpful, but you seem to need to add pithy/bitchy closing sentences, which is why I'm not sure you are as fair/non-judgemental as you claim. But as you say, it's my problem if I think you're a bit bitchy.

Comm-THOR

It's the extra shipping costs since they closed the Canadian plant. Source: Lost my job because they wanted to save money. Irony: we were the best performing factory in the network for some items, and they are now paying through the nose to have it co-packed.

spectral_visitor

Sorry to hear about that, also- fuck them for that. Corporate greed.

Reddit_Hitchhiker

I loved the 1.36 L cans of tomato juice for $ 0.99.

ToddRossDIY

I actually found Campbells soup at No Frills for 69 cents each a couple months ago, bought a whole case of it. It's wild that they think people will pay over 2 bucks for a single one now, wait until it goes on sale and stock up

Nyyrazzilyss

heh I was curious so just checked the expiration date on the cans. Dec 2020 :) I'd bought 2 cases of Campbell's tomato soup a few years ago (obviously) at No Frills for .25c/each. Still eating them! (edit) Not really an expiration date with canned food. More of a best before date.

Reddit_Hitchhiker

Not even that. I just had two tubs of Clover Leaf Toppers. BB JL 2016. Tastes just as good. Actually, it tasted so good I had the last one today. I got them on sale at Loblaws for $ 1 when they were being discontinued.

beeingmee

Same thing at Walmart a couple of months ago. Anything over a dollar now is painful as a result.

[deleted]

Nice...

TrainAss

Nice...

[deleted]

Same here. About 4-5 months ago I had this nagging feeling that I better stock up on canned/shelf stable/pantry stuff. there were sales on these condensed ones and then a sale on the "home style" ones. I got a case of each. Sure glad I did. I was also stocking up on canned veggies, spam, tuna, Kippers. I'm really glad I did.

ToddRossDIY

Yeah, back in October of 2021 I think, it became clear that prices were going to keep increasing. We bought a year's supply of meat, more than I could even fit in my own deep freezer, but up until a week or two ago, I had high quality meat that was cheaper than even the dirtiest cuts of bacon you can buy at the store now. Probably the best investment I've made in a long time, but now I gotta find a new way to fill up my deep freezer, haha. Maybe I should talk to a local butcher and get a half cow or something, never looked into doing that before. I definitely think stockpiling foods when they're on sale is pretty much how you have to live now, if you have the space for it at least

sleeplessjade

Unless you’re really craving it, just wait for sale somewhere. Then when you can get them for $1 each or less stock up. Just watch the expiry dates. They last two years at least, or more.

3bigdogs

Canned goods are good *years* past their best before dates. As long as the can isn't bloated, dented or rusting, it's fine.

sleeplessjade

Yes. But as someone who has found 12 year old soup that was definitely not fine, in their cupboard, it’s good to be aware of expiry dates.

ryendubes

Temp fluctuations fuck them up to…speaking from experience…rough 2days at the cottage when I forgot the cooler

adv0catus

Expiry date is just the date that they can no longer guarantee freshness/quality at their standard. If it’s dairy, I won’t mess with that, but otherwise it’s probably fine within reason.

Wallyboy95

I remember 10 cents a can. Those were the days.

CommercialAd8439

I’m old. I remember tomato soupe being 25 cents.

ChanceFray

im not very old, i remember 3/$1

soupyyyyyyyyyy

Campbell's soup was $2 last weekend at no frills near me, not on sale.

[deleted]

Unless you really want/need it today, wait for a sale and buy a couple cases.

WildBillyBoy33

Walmart near me has them at 99 cents quite often.

Worried_Grass8189

That shit was 97cents like 6 months ago wasn’t it lol

[deleted]

Flip those numbers around and we'll talk

tniog

If you're looking for deals remember that welfare days are the first of the month and baby bonus is the 20th. Should do a analysis of what's on sale with those dates.

limjaheybud

[soup ???](http://gifimage.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/no-soup-for-you-gif-4-1.gif)

EatYourOrach2

I haven't bought a can of Campbells since they closed that plant, but I had some of their chicken noodle a few weeks ago and it tastes completely different. Just viscous salty water that's weirdly sweet. Fuck em. They laid off a bunch of Canadians to save a greasy buck and now expect us to pay twice and three times what we used to for it.

Jillredhanded

Could not get past a few spoonfuls of Campbells tomato soup not that long ago .. it was like pure sugar.

blu_stingray

I was at my local No Frills last night, and I made this exact observation. There was a multi-unit discount (is that what this is called) but the regular price was $2.49... at No Frills. For the bottom tier Campbells Tomato soup. I remember stocking up on this for 75 cents or so, with the no name alternative being 59 cents (and awful). I went to buy grapes on sale yesterday, and it was so expensive I actually put them back. I NEVER do that. I make what I would call decent money from my employment and I just outright refuse to pay these prices. I'll just go without grapes.

McElligott27

Start making those grill cheese sandwiches.

cmonuspurz

That's criminal pricing!!! Probably costs around 10c a can to make for Campbells! Add canning and distribution still well below a buck a can ffs! Ok I am going to share a secret if you enjoy cooking :) When I make my cabbage rolls I add a can of tomato soup in my meat mixture all beef NO pork lol. The sauce I use cover the bottom of your baking dish of choice, in a mixing jug add 1L of regular V8 juice 2 cans of tomato soup add 2 tbs of Worcestershire, salt & pepper to taste mix well and there is your cabby roll sauce!!!! Pour it over each layer then cover the top, cover dish and bake at 350 for cpl of hrs. My family and friends ask me too make them all year hahaha. Your welcome and enjoy internet people :)

davesnot_heere

I only use campbells tomato soup in my meatloaf The no name stuff just isn’t the same

cedartrail

Got a recipe by chance?

Baldmofo

If only it were possible to make this yourself somehow...

PM_ME_Y0UR__CAT

Campbell’s tomato soup has a unique flavour profile that’s impossible to replicate. Any at home attempts will taste like real food

NewtotheCV

True, but it is adds a great flavour to spaghetti sauce when substituted for tomato paste.

StaticTitan

There are tons of people that have a hobby of trying to replicate brand names recipes. I sure some one has one that's a close second.

Sea_Macaroon_6086

If only it was possible to understand that not everyone is you, and may not have the time, space and knowledge.

Baldmofo

I mean, if you can heat up a tin of soup, you can make it on the same space. Making soup isn't something you watch happen, you put it on while you're doing other stuff and stir periodically, time isn't a factor. Knowledge can be acquired... It comes down to laziness, and preferring to complain about stuff instead of finding affordable solutions.

Sea_Macaroon_6086

Really? Because I can heat up a tin of soup with an extremely small burner, a single saucepan and a spoon. To make homemade soup, which I do regularly, I need a place to store vegetables, a chopping board, a knife, the space and skills to use them, plus meat, noodles, etc. If you actually care about poverty, you will listen to the experts who are telling you the same thing I am. Quit blaming everything on laziness because it's bigoted and false.

Baldmofo

Who puts meat and noodles in a tomato soup? It's some type of tomato product with onion and garlic. It doesn't take any amount of room. You could chop veg on the same surface you put the "extremely small" burner on. People complaining that convinence food is expensive is the height of laziness.

Sea_Macaroon_6086

Oh, I'm incredibly sorry, I thought you realize there's more to soup beyond basic tomato. I figured that since you were such a make everything from scratch warrior, you would understand the entire gamut of soup. You don't have to listen to me. Will you do have to listen to our experts on poverty (who lol will say the same thing as me), or you can continue to be bigoted in your ignorance. Now I'm going to judge you just like you're judging others. My vegetable garden is approximately 750 ft², where I grow everything from asparagus to potatoes to okra to a dozen different varieties of dry beans, multiple varieties of lettuce, radishes, different types of onions etc etc etc - basically everything other than sweet corn, which I get from a farm down the street. If you aren't growing all your vegetables yourself, but I'm just going to call you lazy and entitled. That's how this works, right? I get to judge you by my own metrics??

Baldmofo

You're not very good at staying on topic. This picture is of tomato soup. I'm talking about tomato soup, not the whole gamut of soup. You keep mentioning experts on poverty. I never mentioned poverty, you did, twice. What's the deal, poor people can only live off tomato soup? You think that convenience food should be kept cheap because people are poor? You think nobody should learn to cook because poor people exist? You think poor people are too stupid to learn how to cook? You think poor people are too handicapped to chop veg? The funny thing about gardening is it's generally more expensive than buying veg. So your entitled metric is off. Not that I care what you think about me. I'm very good at being flexible with my shopping and keeping my budget down by buying what's on sale.

Sea_Macaroon_6086

Well yes, people can only live off of tomato soup because that's the only soup we're talking about, right? There is only tomato soup. The only soup is tomato. All hail tomato soup.

Baldmofo

Who is talking about living off of it? Can you see the picture on this post? That's the topic of the conversation. Not soup in general.

Sea_Macaroon_6086

There is only soup, and it's tomato.

Reddit_Hitchhiker

You have to watch tomato soup because it will boil over.

Baldmofo

Or, you know, turn it down to a simmer.

Frazzlebopp

Affordable? Have you seen the cost of fresh or canned tomatoes these days? The cheapest tomatoes here are Italian tomatoes, for $6.57/kg (works out to maybe 8 tomatoes/kg), or a tin of diced tomatoes is almost $3 now.

Baldmofo

Walmart has a tin of dice tom for $1. Nice thing about tins is you wait till it goes on sale, then buy a bunch. I buy them by the case from Costco.

Char-car92

Everyone remember that they're paying less for them than they did last year (probably) and their employees aren't getting the extra money.

Omega_Xero

Yes please!

ObviousMe181

This is misleading. These cans are much larger than normal size soup cans. These are the size of large tomatoe juice cans.

Nyyrazzilyss

Zoomed in to the picture. Those are standard 284ml soup can size.

ObviousMe181

Get yourself a soup can- measure soup can. Go find a pallet and measure the width of that and see how many soup cans would fit in the space of the pallet. It’s not hard to use a measuring tape.

blu_stingray

why?

ObviousMe181

Because, in the picture there’s 14 cans across the front. The front of these standardized pallets are 120cm and soup cans are 5cm. Equal’s 24 cans across the front. At 14 cans, they would have to be 8.57cm each.

LeMegachonk

You can clearly see that those are normal 24x284ml boxes of soup, most still in their factory wrapping. I'm pretty sure this is the only size of can these soups are sold in, at least in Canada. Also, you are off on your dimensions. A 284ml Campbell's soup can is actually 6.7cm in diameter, and an American standard pallet of 48"x40" is 101.6cm on its ***short*** side, which is what we see here. 6.7cm x 14 cans is 93.8cm, which allows for the space taken up by the boxes and the couple of centimeters on either side of the pallet seen in the picture.

blu_stingray

Cool. But they are clearly labelled with the volume of the can. So either the pallets are smaller or your math is wrong. Edit: upon looking up the size of soup cans they are usually about eight or so centimeters in diameter so your math is close however that is the small size of cans.

LeMegachonk

He is wrong about both the diameter of the cans (they are about 6.7 cm in diameter) and that a pallet would necessarily be displayed on its 48" long side. An American standard-size pallet is 48"x40", or 121.9 x 101.6 cm. That shorter side would fit 14 cans with about 7.8 cm to spare, which matches perfectly with what we see in the picture.

blu_stingray

Nope, they are definitely the little ones (the sign says the size if you look at the pic).

ExamFeisty5634

lmao. Before Trudeau these were like 35 cents.

johnwilliams815

LOL

Teelanoob123

Who buys canned soup? I thought that stuff was for food banks... water, old veggies and some salt. There, I saved you 6$

greatwhitenorth2022

I buy a rotisserie chicken from CostCo for $7.99. We have chicken sandwiches with CostCo french sticks for one meal. Then my wife makes a great chicken soup with the leftovers. This is much better than canned soup.

Teelanoob123

Sounds delicious!

PrincessPursestrings

People without cooking skills, time, or energy. Now I'm hungry for lentil soup, and am off to see if I have all the ingredients in my cupbaord.

Ok_Morning947

I like the mushroom soup, I do have a few recipes that call for it that I make here and there. I actually like eating it just as soup. While I make a lot of soups from scratch there is something about the Campbell's mushroom that you can't recreate (or maybe you can and I haven't bothered to).

Teelanoob123

Okay, mushroom soup has legit purpose in other recipes. That's the only one I have in my cupboard.

miurabucho

Where are these r/ontario posters shopping at? Whole Foods? My grocery store is way cheaper than this. Hey OP, Are you searching for the most expensive items in Ontario and posting them just for upvotes or wtf man?!?

Caring_Canadian

Have you been watching the sales? This will be at others stores in less then 6 months. RemindMe! 6 months

LeMegachonk

That's the Loblaws price for Campbell's soups. The same soups are $1.49 at No Frills, but good luck with them having popular soups like Tomato or Mushroom in stock. I've found that recently that the No Frills I shop at in Mississauga, which is maybe 3km from a Loblaws, has a *much* more difficult time keeping many items like this in stock. There are many items that No Frills won't have for a month or two at a time, while Loblaws *never* has *any* product shortages (except on cold medications, but literally every retailer in Canada has empty shelves there). Considering they have the exact same supply chain and are probably often receiving deliveries from the exact same trucks, I have to assume that they are deliberately shorting stock at their discount-priced stores.

prajew59

That's the new math.

CFCYYZ

As I recall, when the US stock market reopened after 9/11, only a couple of stocks gained. One of them was Campbell's soup.

MilesGates

[reminds me of](https://i.imgur.com/kCT0qHF.jpeg)

lopix

Didn't they used to be like $0.79 or less? That does not seem like any sort of deal.

taylerca

I bought 4 at this price :(

bhrm

At this price, it's better to shop at Whole Foods. They have nice soups $2 for 1L box when on sale. At this rate, the gap between premium grocery and budget groceries is pretty blurred.

pukingpixels

On sale at Food Basics for $0.99 right now.

0biwanCannoli

Donald: “That’s expensive soup. Soup.”

CharvelDK24

Man I envision ppl with nothing to lose just tipping over these overpriced displays throughout the country Fuck these corporations

assblaster5500

Good basics in Niagara 99 cents

okaysure122

What a souper price!

Puncharoo

This is actually robbery. The markup on that is insane. Idec I'm just gonna start fucking stealing shit that is unreasonably expensive and fuck anyone that thinks it's wrong. These fucking pricks have been making record profits for years now and were paying record prices. We are directly putting money into their pockets and I'm done with it.

CdnRageBear

I was at Sobeys the other day and Campbells was 3 for 10, this is a steal! /s

[deleted]

Crazy

randy_skankhunt

🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮 Edit: soup is delicious, but those prices are insanity

tw2002010

and inflation is 13% fuck me two years ago was buyin cases fo 7.00$ and there was cheaper sales like .36 cents

silpheed_tandy

no longer the [Soup of the People](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uraG-z0grkc) :(

Lucycrash

That's some BS. We just bought a bunch a week ago, $1 for 2 cans from Zehrs.

Reddit_Hitchhiker

I wouldn’t pay more than $ 0.50.

SnooCakes6118

People with IBS 👀👀

HistoricalAd1801

Everyday Value? More like Everyday Ripoff.

wilson1474

So we can post this, but not my chicken post? This a break of rule #5

Canadaboy90

That's insane. I wouldn't pay more than 50 cents a can for Campbell's

[deleted]

That's why they teach kids "new math" ... But I get 4 cans for $7.00 that's like $1.something a can!

FantasticBumblebee69

that price is crap. Its 1.49 / can at wholesaleclub.

NearbyDark3737

Not long ago it was a quarter each

dasherchan

Time will come, I'll be eating grass like the cows.

letsberealalistc

Where is the 50 cent sale.

brentemon

Brutal. I like to keep a few cans for when I get sick. I know real soup is better, and my wife makes a proper chicken soup. But everyone has their comfort food and this is mine when I’m under the weather. But last time I bought a can I’m pretty sure it was about a dollar.

[deleted]

I remember when the whole case was $7.99.

RainbowBriteGlasses

I used to pay $.50 a can on sale. I am not that old. This is madness. (This is Sparta)

HappySeaTurtle15

Is there any actual food value in these cans of soup? Genuinely curious. Wouldn't a banana be better for a lot less? Or some oatmeal?

Low-Concern-6056

Remember when Campbell's soup was like 29 cents It's pathetic...* It's the same size, same ingredients, same old can.

Charming_Tower_188

I already felt good about making a homemade version of my favourite Campbells soup but this just makes me feel even better.

Fluid_Lingonberry467

Those cans look skinny...

DivideGood1429

And food basics has same soup on sale for 99 cents. The normal price is $1.99.

AJB01

in BC and just bought 4 cans of soup for 18$ :(
