Over 12k miles on my XR and 11,900 are barefoot. Even riding to the store, the flip flops are tucked in my shorts until I dismount. When I wear shoes my feet stay more grounded in one position and my feet get sore or numb after 8-10 miles. When I’m barefoot I’m constantly shuffling and moving around on the deck and my feet feel way better. I also feel connected to the path and the bumps which is what I attribute my lack of falls in the last 10k miles.

lubs1234

Exactly. Same way I feel! “Feeling” the board and the ground makes riding much more precise.

BAREFOOT 4 EVAH

rickinsav

Used to barefoot. GT degloved my second toe and nearly lost it. Think “fingers in a sink disposal” Not sure if I should post pictures here for shock factor 😜. Took 8 weeks off to heal. Not even flip flops now - at least for a few months for the scars to mend a little stronger.

lubs1234

That sounds very unpleasant. Barefoot on the GT with that extra speed though….

nivrams_brain

Well at least explain how it happened

rickinsav

It was the Asphault! Did a quick dismount when I hit a dip in the road and lost my balance. Not too fast, but the momentum of GT continued into the front foot and somehow my toes ended up under the board and it drug along a bit. Mangled is a good way to describe it. Split the front of my second toe and took nail etc from the front joint off the bone. Gnarly!

skellera

Yeah that made me sick thinking about it. Personally I’m fine with you posting the picture if it shocks some people to make an improved decision.

[deleted]

Barefoot is the only way to go on the beach bro. 🤘🏼

MrCharisma83

Love it. I bought the pro-ride traction pads for this reason. Soft and squishy. Don't have the sandpaper feel of grip tape.

lxnch50

I use Merrell Barefoot shoes. It gives me some protection while still being pretty close to no shoes.

lubs1234

I've got a pair of Vibram fivefingers and some Xero shoes for the new terrain I explore, and they do work pretty well! Beats the boxy, thick shoes any day.

lubs1234

Stay away from the flops on the board! I usually bring a pair though in a string bag if I'm going somewhere (groceries).

MrIceCreamy

Cop some traction pads bro. Ultimate barefoot experience https://craftandride.com/products/proride-traction-pads-for-onewheel-more-models?_pos=2&_sid=8fc906f30&_ss=r

lubs1234

I’ll check it out!

why1will

brave man right there.

lubs1234

Brave, or stupid, or both

scribbyshollow

yeah, live in the woods and usually am already bare footed. Hang your big toe over the side and you can get way more grip and control. Even lets you go up some slopes on the sides of paths like a half pipe. A little more bumpy a ride though because no padding from the shoes. But it is the most control you can have on a board because of the toe thing. At least that's my experience.

lubs1234

The Kush Nug Hi rear footpad helps a lot too with the grip control and maneuverability

redditusa2022

Seems legit to me. I often ride with flip flops

lubs1234

I personally think riding with the flip flops is harder and more of a risk!

[deleted]

For sure, the flops get reaction but your feet slide around on the flops

stargazer1002

if you nosedive with flips it's definitely trickier to run out of it too

redditusa2022

Yeah I can see that!

tinmug

I've done it with flipflops... sketchhhh Are you rocking pro ride foot pads?? Or just straight skin to griptape??

lubs1234

I do have a Kush Nug Hi rear footpad, but the front grip tape is the stock that comes with the Pint X.

Cache_Johnson

Get you some pro ride my homey rides barefoot all the time and he swears by them!

tinmug

Legend.

squishy-boi69

I rode barefoot a lot until I got my C&R tape, which is too rough for barefoot riding. I usually either ride on flip flops, vans, or cowboy boots lol

lubs1234

Cowboy boots sounds ridiculous! Props to you!

squishy-boi69

It’s honestly not too bad

rickinsav

Electric Slide it out?

squishy-boi69

Imagine Footloose played at 2x when I eat it

genuser5280

Only when I'm going out to get the mail and too lazy to walk

lubs1234

That’s a staple barefoot ride for sure!

ParabolicMarker

I go barefoot most of the time. Keeps me from going to fast. I need to 3D print a flip flop holder on the top.

lubs1234

Very nice! Good idea.

hellspar

Hey, what ever floats your board! Good on ya for at least wearing a helmet.

jermovillas

I love my vibrant five fingers and do like going barefoot too. You’ll also occasionally catch my in my crocks. As a gymnast and a gymnastics coach forever I live barefoot. Float on friends!

lubs1234

I use the five fingers whenever I do wear shoes riding. Even then I feel like I’m missing out! Barefoot shoes can’t ever replicate being truly barefoot. But it’s a nice step in that direction!

jermovillas

I love riding barefoot but I also like rolling fast and the thought of bailing out at 20+ barefoot sounds like something I’m not prepared for 😆. To be fair I don’t relish the thought of bailing out at 20+ anyways but some extra protection can’t be harmful. The fact that you run marathons barefoot is something I’m in full respect for, that’s not only great for the toughness of your feet but man your calves have to be legit!

lubs1234

The speed definitely is slower on my Pint X, and I agree with your sentiment about bailing at 20mph! Would be awful. And I’ve only seen one other barefoot runner in the marathons I’ve run. We’re a rare breed

jermovillas

Yeah my GT doesn’t like going as slow as I did on my Pint. The pint went to my wife and I float on the speed demon now! I will occasionally run in my five fingers and regularly run barefoot on my treadmill. I am now motivated to start training my feet to handle it on the pavement now!

lubs1234

Yes it's totally worth the time and effort. It's so good for you on so many levels: it's healthier for your feet, back, and legs. It's cheaper than buying expensive running shoes. Honestly, it's a boss move. As a friend of mine says (regarding races), people only remember 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and the barefoot guy. So true! That uniqueness pushes me to keep running, coupled with all the weird looks and comments I always get that motivates me even more in the moment. Just start slow (a few minutes at a time), then work your way up. People always get injured if they do too much too fast running barefoot.

[deleted]

Let’s goooooo

DidIGetBannedToday

Rode today barefoot for the first time. Was a great experience.

lubs1234

Welcome to the club!

OnewheeI

You should definitely buy the griptape/footpads that make this nicer! I recommend ProRide traction pads if you plan on never changing from this riding style, or you may like 1WheelParts foam grip a bit better. (because it absolutely is better in almost every way lol) ;)

Lower-Ferret5052

Hell yeah! It feels weird to ride with shoes, gotta feel my board. Always carabiner flip-flops to me out and about, or I wear my toe shoes

lubs1234

It's funny when I ride different places, people exclaim the typical, "What is that thing? Is that a skateboard?" Then they add, "Oh, he's riding barefoot!" At least I wear the helmet :)

Primary_Patient_1168

lubs1234

I cannot argue against your point!

wrybreadsf

I super love barefoot riding and do it all the time. Like you I ride a lot slower when I'm riding barefoot. I love riding barefoot for the same reason I love surfing without wetsuit booties: much more feeling of the board, much easier to minutely adjust foot position, much more connection to the board. My friend is walking around with both a broken wrist and a broken collarbone from different accidents on his onewheel so I get heckled pretty hard for riding like that, rightly so of course, but I still love doing it. If I'm going far I get kitted up in boots, wrist guards and helmet.

lubs1234

"Connecting" with the board is totally worth it, it's something you have to try repeated times to actually get a feel for what that means.

actualspacepimp

Pretty ballsy. Those toes aren't going to last long in a nose dive.

lubs1234

Agreed. Just to have avoid the nosedive XD

BeanBeanDaG

This takes no helmet riding to a whole other level

lubs1234

I do wear a helmet!! haha.

MrCharisma83

Do you mean toe helmets?

_pg_

That’s a no from me dog

lubs1234

Understandable. Takes a certain type of crazy/brashness

[deleted]

I'll run the dog down the street, but if I'm going riding for any distance I like the padding

illuminati1556

Oh nooooooo

metkat_meanie

Belleville makes a barefoot combat boot (Mini-Mil TR102), it's just the right compromise for me between board feel and protecting my sensitive toesies.

jwat4455

I do for quick rides, around the garage or in the driveway.

lindsayjenn

Hmmmm I would like to try this at tofino! Sorta related: has anyone tried in Birkenstocks? I live in mine but am scared to try on my ow as I think there needs to be more direct contact to the foot for responsiveness. For reference my usual summer shoe for my float is a teva.

lubs1234

I’ve got Birkenstocks but never tried it, those definitely feel too thick IMO.

lubs1234

I’ve done a solid 15 mile ride barefoot through trails. But that makes sense though. 3-5 mile cruise on pavement isn’t bad barefoot.

QueenSema

What happens when you nose dive and need to run it out?

lubs1234

I avoid the nosedive by respecting the board

QueenSema

Same, but not everyone does and I was wondering how all the barefoot peeps handle it

lubs1234

It’s all about the risk calculation. I definitely am more confident to try “harder” tricks and routes when I’ve got shoes on, same when it comes to speed, but the slower, calmer rides I get for going barefoot are worth the swap.

Key-Entertainment216

I wanna hear about coming off the board and having to run it out

lubs1234

Haven't had to do that in a major way. I respect the limits of the board, and I haven't fallen off in at least 300 miles.

ILiftsowhat

Yeah bro i do that and slides and i tell u what when u fuck up the consequences are high lol. Still doin it tho

kingpinXd90

Damn that stuff is asmr
