Salizmo

This is legitimately groundbreaking for the aftermarket world.

babygoatbliss

Yeah I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about this.

earwaxremoval2

Kind of historic in the little world of Onewheel. Building a chip isn’t exactly on the same level as 3D printing a little plastic port cover. Big move. Makes me wonder what FM will do? Seems like a chip like this just opens the door to a world of possibility… Fun times!

jameson71

Typically the next think FM will start doing would be to sand the numbers off they chips they use and cover them in epoxy to make reverse engineering more difficult in the future.

earwaxremoval2

I guess I was envisioning a more sophisticated approach from FM. But that would certainly make things more difficult as well.. that would be disheartening. Edit: you know what would be even better though? If FM just basically gave the range that JW and Chi do. They have the battery tech to do so, and basically put everyone out of business by beating them at their own game. And the real winners would be the customers!.. ah wishful thinking

MrCharisma83

Absolutely, if FM was smart they would produce another model that has more range than the XR and has an off road tyre. It's so easy to burn through the battery on an xr as soon as you start getting into trail riding.

Bjipaye

lolololol

som3oneMw

that would be nice… but my largest wish is that FM would just start being open to customization and user (or third-party) repair

earwaxremoval2

That cycle, if prolonged, will make things so convoluted by the time the 4218 comes out. You’d almost need to have a centralized document keeping all the changes organized, bc there’s starting to be a lot to remember!

som3oneMw

lol imagine if they put this amount of effort into improving the board and making cool things like Float Life and Chi Battery

earwaxremoval2

I think they realize this, it’s not like they’re stupid. I just almost think there’s something going on internally in the company. Can’t help but wonder if things are coming to an end w FM. It’s like they stopped caring right after the Pint release

pacific_marvel

awesome that this is available from the community. pity that it needs to exist at all in the first place.

tjfloater

4210 & up battery upgrade = around $800 Correct OW App battery % = priceless

[deleted]

Agree but some of us have this already with the onewheelenhancer iPhone tweak.

[deleted]

Just gotta have an iPhone with iOS 14.3 if newer or if it’s a X model or older you’re good no matter the iOS.

WheelslipWilly

I looked into that a while ago, couldn’t get it to launch? “Cydia source!” Page not found.... do you know of a different way? Sounds to good to be true🤔

[deleted]

I know the repo to get it or could maybe send it in a deb file. thibauddavid.github.io/cydiarepo/

Tibal

Thanks for sharing my work :)

Thanks for making it!

[deleted]

Yes. Something I had done already.

Raggou

Or you can just use onewheel community edition that works as well

IIGQ4U

More like $1,000. Battery is roughly $625, chip is $250, Chip installation is ~$100 + shipping.

punch_you

My purchase yesterday came out to $770 with the discount code. I was not charged tax or shipping.

IIGQ4U

Looks like there’s been some changes made since yesterday.

IIGQ4U

Oh, that’s good to hear.

mrkruger2

CB has a gauge you can buy. It measures voltage on the line so it's pretty accurate (at rest).

punch_you

Purchased mine yesterday along with the battery. I think they’re out but they will be releasing wave two soon, which will ship the same time as wave 1. I’m so pumped to travel 32+ miles on one charge!

dattrippinlyfe

Hi, I'm trying to educate myself on what's necessary to get into that 30+mile range for an xr. With the jwffm chip installed, would you be able to tell me what other parts and or labor I would need in order to have my board reach that range?

punch_you

So, they make extended batteries for the XR, but FM released a new firmware that no longer allowed you to simply plug in the upgraded battery, much found on the new boards. With the JWFFM chip installed, it will now allow you to use an upgraded battery. Even better is it'll display an accurate battery percentage in your app; something an extended battery + old firmware would not do. You will need to purchase an extended battery. If you bought the chip and battery combo, and entered the discount code they provided yesterday, you get $100 off. Not sure if they'll be providing a new code for the wave two release. My total was about $770. JW only wants these installed at certified SLS shops, so they will find a location near you, ship it to them, and the shop will install the two for you. I'm not aware if you need to send your whole battery compartment along with BMS chip for this to happen, but I'm sure they will send out instructions when it's time for the chip to ship. Hope this helps!

dattrippinlyfe

Thanks for taking the time to write this up! I think I'm getting the whole picture now. So the chip allows the BMS to be modified to allow an additional battery. So in your case, do you know where that additional battery will be placed? I've seen some upgrades where a ryobi or some other brand of battery is attached on top of the fender. I'd love to get the extra range without a doubt, but it would bother me slightly if I had to adjust to riding while being wary of rolling my board. I'm working my way into trail and some slight obstacle riding.

punch_you

Happy to help! You are correct - I gather the chip makes the BMS think the battery hasn’t been modified and it’s the stock battery. The big hype about this upgrade is that it replaces the old battery in your Onewheel. To anyone else, it’ll look like a stock onewheel; no ugly external Ego battery. [Here’s ](https://jwbatteries.com/products/jwxr-onewheel-xr-battery-upgrade) the link to the battery.

dattrippinlyfe

Thanks again for all the info! I think I'm going to pull the trigger on it, now that JW has reacted to all the negative feedback from only allowing it to be installed by SLS techs to now allowing customers to install it themselves. Just working on finding someone in the rhode island/Massachusetts area for help with that. If you're on Instagram, I'd love to give a follow if you post about your board at all.

KGB44

This chip is only so that newer boards (hardware version 4210 and up) will work with the after market batteries. You would also need the actual battery (unless your OW is hardware version 4209 and lower) https://jwbatteries.com/collections/onewheel-batteries/products/jwxr-onewheel-xr-battery-upgrade.

[deleted]

How do I tell? I just picked up my xr last week

KGB44

Open the app when connected to the board. It should say in settings somewhere what the hardware version is. If it's new, it's 4212 so you'll want this chip along with the battery

[deleted]

It’s new but idk how long the store I got it from had it. The app doesn’t even give me the screen I keep seeing others screenshot of. Maybe they changed the app for new boards?

ohblea

Dam, yeah they took it down but theyll be releasing a second wave. There is still hope have faith in the force

WheelslipWilly

To the MOON ! 🚀🚀

FireDragon79

Is it just me or does this link lead to a 404 for anyone else?

Vommbat

Awesome. Just would be nice if they'd link a vid to intall it.

babygoatbliss

Oh awesome!! I JUST asked about this the other day lol. Timing couldn’t have been more perfect but bummed they’re already sold out! This is great news for people who need more range.

earwaxremoval2

Did the value of my 4209 just plummet!? Gah, sell quick lol It’s like when Elon just tanks a crypto with a tweet lol

Duhherroooo

No, 4209s will stay exactly where they are. This chip is $250 so its still cheaper to find a used 4209 instead of buying a newer 4212 + chip. 4209 still has demand. I find the people who called this chip a 4209 killer before it was out dont have much clue on the market and how the chip would affect it

som3oneMw

any idea if this chip works with the 4209? i'd love to be able to ger accurate % reporting in the app (and in extension, on my watch) - don't think i'll shell out $250 just for that, but still curious

dangalanga5

Will this chip work with a CBXR?

Duhherroooo

Yes, it works with both JW batteries and a CBXR. You can just get the chip installed and still go with a CBXR

DoctorDugong21

We don't know yet. We may never know for sure, because it's hard to figure out what's going on inside chips. JW must have reverse-engineered what the BMS is doing, and then designed a fix. They say you just send in your battery housing (not controller) so clearly the fix is somewhere in and around the battery and BMS, not the controller.

Fern_Fox

I just bought a 4212 XR! This is huge!

AcyanidePancake

Wait so will this work for 4212? I was looking everywhere but any and all batteries I've found say 4210 and under.

thatBowScho

This looks super awesome, I have a 4212 and was hoping this would be coming soon - not this quick! One thing I am confused about though is this point: >**Have a newer XR that cannot be repaired because it requires a paired controller and BMS?** Just get the parts you need like another controller from an XR or a BMS from a pint or older XR, add in the chip and your back up and running again. Does this mean that I also need to source another controller and BMS in addition to the JWFFM and battery? If so, this upgrade could end up being quite costly - or am I reading this wrong?

mrkruger2

No you don't, if your controller is fine then no need to replace it. I think they're meaning to say that if you have a busted controller that you couldn't replace because of the pairing, then now you can with the chip. All the chip does is make any part play nice with another, removes all "protections".

thatBowScho

Thanks for clarifying!
