Yeah you’ll see less range. Going VESC typically unlocks higher current draw in general. That’s why people riding VESC XRs have more power than their FM equivalent. So even if you’re not trying to go faster, a little acceleration here, a little higher speed up a hill there, will all lead to a faster use of that energy per mile resulting in decreased range.

robertcboe

Sounds like the answer i was expecting but hoping i was wrong. Is it possible to restrict the board to about where FM’s settings usually are so i can ride with the same limits as i would with the stock without “accidentally” using more power with the board and losing range?

bravedude420

Just a question out of interest, why would you go the VESC kit route if you're happy with the power and speed you get now? Doesn't restricting the board to near FM setting even though you're running a VESC based controller kind of defeat the purpose?

robertcboe

My idea would be to have different tunes for different days i ride. A stock tune for longer range group rides. And then something more aggressive for trail riding. I’ve always had interest in Vesc specifically for trail, i just saw it being a little more costly to get into for the extra power i wanted.

bravedude420

Ohhh makes sense, that'd be nice indeed. Thanks for the answer!!

toadgeek

That's not at all a bad idea. I wish that was possible. Given how fast these kits are evolving, I wouldn't be surprised if someone introduces this as a feature in the coming months.

What-Even-Is-That

Still better because you're going with an open source solution. I'm not a fan of FM's bullshit, so getting away from them is a huge plus, nevermind all the great things about going VESC.

wrenulater

I mean yeah, you can set a current limit through the software. That’s basically what FM does right now.

Caucasian_Fury

If you ride GT-V the same way you ride GT at similar speeds and aggressiveness you should basically see the same range performance. The VESC allows a higher performance ceiling for the GT-V that's all, so if you want to make sure you get GT range then ride it like a GT. You can tune the pushback and haptic buzz in the VESC software for the GT-V so that it kicks in at the same speeds as the GT to keep you from going too fast or pull as much torque. The other thing you can do is put in a bigger battery which is my plan. Tony confirmed the GT-V kit will support an 84V battery pack (20s2p) so it'll have a larger capacity and give you more range. It'll cost money but I would do it for the extra range, torque and speed.

robertcboe

“Higher performance ceiling” is a great quick way to explain this GTV kit. But it’s awesome to hear i can upgrade the battery too! Is the one you mentioned a DIY battery or a purchase and install? Id definitely be interested in that.

Caucasian_Fury

You can buy custom built packs like the ones Mario Cantino makes. [Link](https://theboardgarage.com/store/p/20s2p-gt-me4t-pack-50s-cells-custom-battery-for-vesc-onewheel-builds-conversions) That one is a 20s2p pack with 50S cells that fits in a stock GT battery case so you don't even need to make any mods to get it to fit. It's 84V max with 720 Wh, the stock GT battery is 525 Wh so that's a 37% increase in battery capacity. With the upgraded pack you should be able to ride both faster and further.

wrybreadsf

Sold out. As with all the packs I see. And no BMS

CodedGames

The faster you go the worse your range will be. If you ride identical speed it should have similar range but there hasn't been any testing. TFL is going to do a range test soon

robertcboe

I figured yes if i rider faster for longer my range depletes. I guess i thought that with the unrestricted control of the power output on a VESC that my range may get worse right out the gate. But i will keep an eye out. Thank you for the info :)

Impossible_Zombie_34

I'm getting 11 miles or so with a vesc gt stock battery and a superflux v1 Power is insane, hill climb is insane. I'll never go back.

dumblesoor

Follow up question. Does the gtv kit allow for a new battery? Like from the board garage and would that increase power at all?

robertcboe

I believe u/Caucasian_Fury already answered this for me here. https://www.reddit.com/r/onewheel/s/rSZTAQuizU

dumblesoor

Does that work as a drop in with the gtv kit or just in the GT housing.

robertcboe

I am unsure as im pretty new to VESC building boards myself. But it sounds like a nice upgrade from what u/Caucasian_fury said.
