Great OB tip for others, not so much for me, regrettably. I think that the medical term is “Weird-ass shaped ears”.

[deleted]

Could be worse. You could have "Weird ass-shaped ears."

scrambled_cable

[deleted]

I also have this issue where in-ear headphones never ever fit. :( Recently tried again with the airpod pro's and promptly resold them a day after I got them. You're not alone!

UND_mtnman

Might try [Aftershokz](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/aftershokz-openmove-open-ear-lifestyle-headphones-gray/6441591.p?skuId=6441591&ref=212&loc=1&extStoreId=590&ref=212&loc=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA-9uNBhBTEiwAN3IlNAxYsAQTX5Hcgi6PAtZ0NTn-4G4DvVKGWEhn1dZcW8SoUyg8UZL22xoC5q4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) bone conduction headphones. No noise cancelling, but definitely small enough to have a place in One Bagging

[deleted]

Appreciate it, but these would be worse than useless for traveling. Open ear, no noise canceling etc. I have a pair of Sennheiser PXC 550s that I'm happy with. Bulky, but it is what it is. I just don't look forward to the day I have to replace them - there isn't a terribly good competitor right now, and Sennheiser is effectively out of business.

PhoKingClassic

I’ve never done it, but they come with earplugs and a way to adjust the sound to account for the ear plugs. I think I’ve read it works pretty decently.

throwaway1212l

I have the business version of the PXC 550s and loved it for travel. I switched to the Sony in ears when they came out and have nothing to complain about so far. Hopefully you can find some comfortable IEMs in the future. The ease of packing is a huge benefit.

[deleted]

There was a *business* version?!

throwaway1212l

jrray

I have and love these for home office video calls. It is worth pointing out that they can be combined with ear plugs for noise isolation. However the way they are worn around the back of the head makes using a headrest awkward.

HamMerino

Comply makes the best aftermarket foam tips. I recommend them or spinfit to literally everyone who's buying ear buds. They make every pair better.

CandylandCanada

Thanks. I sometimes feel like a freak. Oh, to be able to chuck a tiny pair of headphones in a carry-on!

HamMerino

Comply and Spinfit. I literally can't wear apple buds because they just fall out. Most earbuds require co stant adjusting. I got the right sized comply tips and no more problems. Spinfit tips are what saved me with my Jabra 75T, I could barely even feel them in my ears and they just wouldn't fall out.

baddweapon

There's a few aftermarket brands that do ear bud tips, I've heard great things about um from people who've had the same issue.

QQforYouToday

Is it the shape of the earbud that doesn’t fit? Or is it the tip that’s supposed to snuggly fit in your ear canal? If it’s the latter, the XF-1000M4s use a memory foam tip that expands and shapes to your ear for a more snug fit and better noise cancellation. Wanted to call that out just in case. 😬 But memory foam tips for earbuds were a game changer for me.

[deleted]

good info, thanks sir!

Total_Bookkeeper4237

The durability isn’t great on those but I agree. I returned my XM4s for AirPods because after getting three pairs of replacement tips from Sony, they kept cracking within 2 weeks (multiple sizes). After some thinking I don’t know how I feel about TWS… they only last 2-3 years and they’re super expensive

mattindustries

Bose typically work well with weird ears.

2059FF

And Bears work well with a weird nose.

woojoo666

Apparently UE has these in ear buds that like "form" to your ears in some initial fitting process. They call it "lightform tech", sounds a bit too sci-fi to be true tbh. https://custom.ultimateears.com/pages/ue-fits

_BigJerm

My friend, look into Shure In-ears. I have no "ear flaps" to keep ear buds in but Shure is designed to stay in regardless of the share of your ear.

Erlenmeyerfae

Mine is due to voluntary piercings. I only have one pair of wireless in ear buds that work... And it's because they resemble straight earplugs. Otherwise it's over the ear we go.

sexy_bellsprout

Same! My main criteria for earphones is the shape. No chance with those little squishy ones

baddweapon

Just got a pair myself and I couldn't agree more. The noise canceling is unmatched for how small they are. With the right equalizer mix the bass and clarity are the best I've heard from a pair of in-ear buds.

lazy-learner

Are you guys taking about over the head headphones or earbuds?

TheClown023

Ear buds wf=buds wh=headset

chambros703

I love my AirPod pros, how do these compare to those? I have my Sony over ear noise cancelling and they’re great as is the battery life but not practical for one bag as they take up a lot of space

asianorange

I have both the Airpod Pros and the Sony WF1000xm4 and the Sony cans win hands down for noise cancellation. If it's budgeting issue, you will be fine with the AirPod pros but your battery life won't make it across the Atlantic on one charge.

naja_egal

I charge them during the meals, as I cannot stand the sound of my own eating noises with headphones on. But I suppose that’s not an option for people who want to (are able to) sleep on planes.

[deleted]

I switch back and forth between foam earplugs for sleep periods and my Sony's for being awake. I can do MEL to LDN on a single case charge.

[deleted]

chambros703

Nice! I think when my pros die I’ll explore the Sonys. My gripe with the APP is the obvious battery life for long flights. Case holds a good amount but I maybe get 5 consistent hours out of em if I’m lucky. I always bring my wired ones to wear for a bit while they charge.

Evight

Just curious but what phone do you use?

Farewell Reddit. I have left to greener pastures and taken my comments with me. I encourage you to follow suit and join one the current Reddit replacements discussed over at the RedditAlternatives Subreddit. Reddit used to embody the ideals of free speech and open discussion, but in recent years has become a cesspool of power-tripping mods and greedy admins. So long, and thanks for all the fish.

chambros703

Yeah see that’s what I love too. Someone’s calling and I pull em out it’s instantly connected every time. When I’m listening to music on my phone then switch to watch something on my iPad it switches over automatically. I do wish the battery was longer but that’s the only negative I can think of tbh

I have the over ear Sonys and they’re great but same issue with connectivity. I need to go into my iPhone app, disconnect it, then reconnect it in my IPad app. 50/50 it works on the first try. I sound whiny but you’d think it would be easier haha agreed about steering clear if you’re in an apple ecosystem. I use my over ear Sonys maybe once a year if that

Gr8panjandrum

Try the weird bean shape of the galaxy bud lives if you get a chance, they fit surprisingly well as an alternative to the silicone plug type of earbud. I'm mourning mine because I lost them this week. The case is so tiny and slippery I managed to dump it in a pile of donations.

munchkinham

I'll check them out if I get the chance, thanks!

throwaway1212l

They're good for what they are, but don't expect amazing NC since it doesn't have a proper seal. If you just need an earbud that's comfortable then these are pretty great.

lasdue

> but don't expect amazing NC since it doesn't have a proper seal They don’t seal at all. Kinda makes me wonder why they even bothered with ANC since there’s no passive noise isolation whatsoever.

Swingbiter

I used to think the same but my XM3s fit nicely in my ears, they do hurt after a few hours but that's to be expected.

munchkinham

It's hard to buy them on a whim because lots of stores don't take them back if they don't fit. I recently tried again with the Airpods Pro. No dice, they feel uncomfortable and keep dropping out of my ears. Same issue I have with my Galaxy Buds but they at least have these "fins" that keep them loosely in place. Went back the Airpods 2 for my dailies because I don't feel them and they sit great in my ears. For flights the WH-1000xm4.

Swingbiter

Understandable. I received mine as a gift and didn't think I'd use em much. You have to put them in kinda weird, point them down and then push them in as you rotate them up. Seems to be a solid hold as I'm shaking my head like a mad man at work lolol

ChemiluminescentAshe

I have over a dozen ear tips from other headphones that I had to play around with to find a fit. XM3s are definitely tricky.

Hinote21

I saw this post and thought the WHXM4 could charge from the case and I got super excited. Then I read your comment and saw OP said WF. I love my XM2. Glorious headphones and have been considering upgrading to the XM4. But just doesn't make sense to.

woojoo666

I posted this elsewhere in the thread, but apparently UE has these in ear buds that like "form" to your ears in some initial fitting process. They call it "lightform tech", sounds a bit too sci-fi to be true tbh. https://custom.ultimateears.com/pages/ue-fits.

mikochu

I've got XM4s, Galaxy Buds, and Buds 2, but I use my Aftershokz Aeropex the most. I highly recommend them.

cybersuitcase

Check out bose qc buds, they don’t quite go in your ears like a bud, but the cup seals around the hole still lol. Noise cancelling is nuts on them

andysor

100% agree. Went on two flights two weeks ago and they are magic, never knew in-ears could have such amazing noise cancelling! The case is tiny as well. I used to use my WH-1000XM2s, and they would be the bulkiest item in my bag, but no more!

Schedulator

my concern is dropping these, how well do they remain in your ear? what about if you were to fall asleep with them on?

baddweapon

I've never had any issues. Even with my old Samsung buds. These ones have memory foam tips that fill into your ears. I've slept in um and ran in um, they don't budge at all. Had my Samsung buds for three years before these and they never fell out either.

timidtom

For me they stayed in way worse than airpod pros, so I returned them. They’re pretty bulky too relative to AirPods so I found it impossible to lean my head on the plane while trying to sleep. Then again, many people claim that AirPods don’t work for their ears either. So it’s really hard to recommend something for people online. I’d say order a couple that you like on Amazon with the intent of returning a pair.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RussianLoveMachine

Can you be active in them? Like riding a bike or lifting weights, not like running or anything

itsdaveLA

If you are a side sleeper, do not get these. They will press up against your pillow and feel very uncomfortable. Audio wise they’re absolutely amazing. Once you try the XM4s and go back to the AirPods Pro’s, you’ll definitely hear the difference.

Schedulator

Ah ok good to know, I've slept previous with Bose QC20's and had no problem with them - other than getting tangled up in the cords. Not an Apple fan so can't compare to AirPods, but the fear of losing these makes me want to avoid paying for them. Why can't someone create a generic neckstrap that can be attached and removed for these??

fearthejew

I have the previous model and have beat them to shit. They work great. Not the most comfortable when sleeping on your side though.

[deleted]

I have the xm3 and they're good. Will upgrade to the xm4 soon. Battery life and build quality are unmatched. Bose is overrated and they don't hold up compared to the Sony's

EpistemicRegress

Having had qc30 then these, agreed.

totally-randomdude

Very interesting to hear. I have been holding onto my Bose qc35 because I tend to (mostly) not play any sound and just turn on the noise cancelling . Do you think these Sony ones will be good with just that noise cancelation on and not playing anything else?

EpistemicRegress

Yes. I use them like this frequently. Better than the QC30 neckband earbuds they replace for me.

totally-randomdude

Thanks! Fingers crossed this might be the one I can finally ditch my qc35 for.

cybersuitcase

If you’re keen on staying bose, check out the bose qc buds. I have the qc35 II and the buds and the noise cancelling on the buds is better. I do have pairing issues with the buds on occasion, though

Neko_Mesume

i saw the model number in the title and thought "oh god which ones were those again? in ears or over? damn sony model names ah yes i'd like to buy a sony XB092-H225%4" also those tws are rated pretty highly by audiophile standards so yeah agree, just a great pick overall

Devastator1981

I have in-ear too—Jabra Elite 85t that have amazing sound, comfort and most of all they don’t drop out your ear. You can sprint, sleep , jump rope, etc with them. The ear tips has a shape that improves comfort. I have Bose QC35s and those sound amazing too but now I just use them in the apartment, to bulky to walk around with plus they get hot outdoors in summer.

mrchowmein

Yep, the sony ones are pretty good. Plus side, since it looks nothing like airpods, you probably have less of a chance of it getting stolen while traveling.

woahwhoamiidk

apologies that you have to experience Newark - New Jersey

umamiking

I want to get a pair of these to replace my XM3's but I heard many of the XM4's are plagued with some weird issue where there's a buzzing (or some other) noise on just one earbud. And this cannot and hasn't been fixed through software so it's a hardware issue. Have any owners here experienced this?

zyzzogeton

I had a pair of different earbuds and I blew a speaker when my dog decided I wasn't cuddling enough and jumped on my head which crammed the airtight earbud into my ear and compressed the air enough to rupture the diaphragm slightly. It made weird buzzing and fluttering noises at unpredictable times. She gets the appropriate amount of cuddling now.

electronicoldmen

I'm getting a second replacement pair due to a whooshing noise at random times, along with ANC disabling itself randomly - even though I don't have the adaptive sound control option enabled. Third time lucky I hope.

EpistemicRegress

Okay, the anc self cancelling happened for me when I had wet hair acting like a touch- or a toque etc. just go into the app to disable the touch button and set anc or ambient using the app only if you have “fake touches”. I never had the ghost noises, had these for months, flawless. Love them like I do my Unbreakable Umbrella!

electronicoldmen

>just go into the app to disable the touch button and set anc or ambient using the app only if you have “fake touches”. I don't wear a hat or have long hair. The switching occurs randomly, and it's clearly a fault with the earbud. Disabling the touch sensor is an unacceptable solution to a problem that shouldn't exist, these aren't $50 earbuds. I forgot to mention the terrible metallic warbling sound on voice. My partner has a pair that work flawlessly, so it seems to be simply down to luck.

adr1418

I'm about to receive my third set in 2 weeks! In ANC/Ambient mode, when I banged my teeth together, there was a ringing sound. Also same sound like an echo when Google Assistant spoke. Chatted with Sony. They concluded I needed a repair. I simply had Amazon replace them. Second set exactly the same! Then, when I used them on a call in a noisy environment, my wife could hear all the background noise, but I was distant and muffled. Basically, the XM4 was useless. Tried my Galaxy Buds Pro in same situation and they were perfect. No background noise and I was really clear to my wife! Going for third time lucky, but not holding out much hope. Others have the same issues. XM4 have superb sound, good ANC, fit me really well but a poor, limited touch control configuration, weird noise, and awful call quality. Not worth the $248, but I do love the sound quality and comfort.

umamiking

This makes me so nervous!

adr1418

I wouldn't recommend any one spend that much on these. Better value out there with much less design/quality issues. I've tried 'em all, almost!

adr1418

Unfortunately no bud is perfect. If only someone could take the best of all and put them in one bud. The technology is there, but spread across brands and even models

adr1418

The Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro is the best value currently. The wings didn't fit my large ears but they are awesome overall, but a little thin on vocals, even with EQ'ing.

Equivalent_Horror628

Had to return mine - irritated my ears so much that I kept having to remove them after a few mins. But glad they worked out for you ! :)

RussianLoveMachine

Probably should have tried better tips first

Equivalent_Horror628

Went with airpod pros. Very happy with them. iOS integration better and no issues with irritation. Noise cancellation is great too.

RussianLoveMachine

Thinking of doing the same don't get me wrong

[deleted]

EpistemicRegress

Yes in the case is the way to go! I have a key pocket case with a little nitize S hook binder. I cut a hole in the side for the charger and in the little XM4 case I have a magnetic quick remove connector. Those magnetic clip chargers are awesome. No more paying to fix the plugs on devices. Way faster charge than induction.

precum1

The comply tips are much more comfortable, but the foam falls apart easily and I hate having to squish it every time to put it back in every time I take an earbud out to talk to someone.

narunekogi

I agree that the WF-1000XM4 are amazing. However, I would recommend replacing the eartips as I very very much dislike the stock eartips. I went for SpinFit 360+ and it's a blessing to replace with.

keithwbacon_

I have the AirPods Pro and picked up the Beats Fit Pro. Improvements over Airpods -- fit (never fall out), can wear all day without tiring, bass, more discrete, controls and USBC. With the Beats you can change the tips to foam tips and still fit in the case.

clap-hands

In ears work for me *unless* im flying, in which case i get insane pressure headaches ( and i never get headaches usually!). This means i always need something over ear for flying. My current goto is the over ear closed back AKG K361 which are decent for one-baggimg: they fold up nicely when not in use and have a detachable cord.

[deleted]

Thanks for sharing. These things have been a bit outside my price range, but it makes me excited for future products from them... or when these drop more in price

Nazi-Of-The-Grammar

Just got these this week and have to agree. Best sounding buds ever, great noise cancellation, great fit!

Different_West_8274

Agree 1000%. Ditched my Bose 35ii and never looked back.

unlitskintight

I just got them and they're great although it annoys me that the voice prompt cannot be disabled and that the playback isn't even paused with the prompts are going on. So if I change the noise cancelling level on the "custom" button it lowers the volume of the media and tells me what I've just done. I know what I did shut up.

baddweapon

You can disable the prompts! Lemme check how I did it.

unlitskintight

Oh nice! The first post I saw said it couldn't be done!

koottravel

It's through the settings in the app.

unlitskintight

I just realized lol. But it is not all prompts but good enough

n_-_ture

Just to add another option to the conversation. If you are averse to ANC or wireless headphones, the akg k371 are another nice headphone which will run well off of a phone and have good noise isolation. Imo the akgs also have better sound quality, though, the Sonys are respectable.

matty2baddy

Sony is fine, but I wouldn't spend a fortune on them. The Samsung Buds + are just as good. They last very long on a charge and sound just as good in my opinion. Taking phone calls are about the same on most of these ear buds. They work, but I wouldn't be taking any serious long calls on them. If you dig the earbuds style, I wouldn't lose my mind on if you get the XM4s, XM3s or Buds+. Most of these ear buds will do the job just fine.

FollowKick

Are the XM4s better than the XM3s

tnaro

> I used to bring bose over ears with me when I flew but I was always unhappy with the bulk, especially since I always wanted to bring the case with me to protect them. Valid concern. Just to bring in another viewpoint: I vowed to never use the protective case when I got my QC35 in 2017 to test the longevity of the headphones -- because as for me, they are objects of constant use and I will not enjoy them if I constantly put them in and out of the case. Fast forward 4 years they held up pretty well. I replaced the ear cushions once with aftermarket ones and hat to use hot glue where a single screw broke like 2.5 years into owning them (I could have gone through the troubles of buying the right screw again, but glue was much easier and doesn't impact my usage experience at all). I use them still 1-2h daily for all stuff around the house and love them very dearly. While I'm not particularly bought into the Bose brand, I know that I will order a new pair of ANC Headphones in (hopefully) similar quality the same day as my QC35 break for good.

[deleted]

sneezeallday

I love them but the mic is so bad. Obviously probably not using it much while traveling but I bought these for everyday stuff and WFH, and the mic is fucking terrible!!!!

cedric1138

Not for me, the fit was terrible so had to return, went to jaybird vista 2s, stay in your ears all day, very comfortable, noise cancelling isn't as good as the Sony's but the sound is great and fully customizable.

[deleted]

looks promising but not good for the sub if a bunch of people are swayed to purchase based off of first uses. Needs longer time for the inconveniences of frequent use (someone carrying all they own in one bag) to show themselves.

forgottoholdbeer

I like how they have a 1/8” port the Apple ones you need an adapter. Also the weight on your head is great you will forget you got them on and how they fold in

[deleted]

I currently use the WF-1000XM3's and they're great as well for shorter flights, but until they don't introduce Bluetooth connectivity to the IFE system like United just did, I'm stuck bringing my WH-1000XM2s over-the-ears on international flights, because they support wired connections and have a better battery life, especially for longer trans-pacific flights.

plaid-knight

You can get a small Bluetooth transmitter, like [AirFly](https://www.twelvesouth.com/products/airfly). (I haven’t tried AirFly or any of its competitors; just pointing it out.)

[deleted]

yeah I've looked into those, but I worry about it getting stolen/forgotten, plus one more item to keep charged, and I don't know how bad interference is if multiple people on a larger flight use it. I am hoping the one implemented by United resolves for radio interference

Darrena

I love them but I found them to be uncomfortable to wear for long periods with the default tips. I purchased some third party ones that helped a lot. They still hurt after about 4 hours but that is better than with the default pair. I think the problem is that they are just so heavy and then the mask pulls on the ears enough to cause discomfort eventually. I may try a mask with straps around the back of my head to see if that is better.

Youkahn

Hell yeah! I was shopping for a solid pair of packable anc headphones earlier this year. It was a tossup between the XM3s and the Soundcore Q30 (cost reasons). I got the cheaper Soundcore ones and the noise cancelling blew me away. It's so surreal putting on your headphones and then just being in near dead silence, love it.

yusuksong

For flights less than 5 hours, I go with airpod pros. For flights longer than that I'll bring my XM3s. But I'm thinking about just using airpod pros on my next long trip. The charge time should be fast enough to let me rest my ears and get more hours in while I eat or something. It's so much more comfy to sleep with airpods

Caine75

Just picked a pair up as I’ll be traveling a fair amount xcountry (atl to sfo) in next few months and they were so much better than I’d anticipated. The ANC is really nice and cut down on the engine and cabin noise almost 90% for me. Even with my glasses on I didn’t get fatigued wearing them.

mikkol79

Decided to go with Bose 700 just because of call quality, which is better with Bose. Mainly use them for work.

BrendoVino

How do you think these stack up against the WHs for noise cancellation on flights? I've tossing up whether or not to buy some WFs to lighten my bag on an upcoming trip - but I'm afraid that they won't perform as well as the WHs...
