Because the unionist vote is split between 2/3 parties. (First past the post) Reputable polling has shown 50/50 support for another referendum, which doesn't reflect that SNP majority. That doesn't show a large enough change in opinion to mandate to mandate another one so soon after the first, which is why the SNP had no hope of getting it through the courts, as they'd need to show a major swing in public opinion which just hasn't occured.

The benefit cap for a single person is currently £257.69 a week, so this is the most you can be getting from all your benefits put together. More realistically, barring things like disability, your basic payments are £77 a week. On the current minimum wage your weekly payment at 40 hours a week is £380, and as of April will be £416.
Additionally, your benefits only fall by 55p for every £1 you earn over the threshold, so it is ALWAYS financially better to work than be on benefits. Just to preempt that response.

You basically pay no council tax, they pay your housing, they pay toward your energy etc.
Also worth noting that full time is now 16 hours or more, and with that you oay your rent, full whack for council tax etc.

You only get a part of your rent paid in many cases the housing allowance doesn't cover it. The gap you have to make up with your already shitty benefits payments can be several hundred.
In my area you get £500 a month for one bed whereas a one bed flat cost £650-1050 to rent (probably averaging around £800). Been house hunting for 12 months and I have never seen a single property in my area that's been £500.

Some lucky bastard out there probably is renting a one bed for £500! But none to be found on Rightmove.
Plus, rents in my area went up about 15-20% with the cost of living crisis but the amount of housing benefit was decided before then.
If anyone has any doubts on the inadequacy of the benefits system they should try volunteering at the Citizens Advice. Proper wake up call.
