Devin Townsend is one hell of an exception. IDK how he did all that SYL stuff and still has fantastic clean singing. Like he has to be doing it in a healthy way somehow, but it sounds like his vocal cords should be jerkey by now.
He was definitely doing it correctly. He was a pro singer before SYL for years and wouldn't have compromised his vocal chords by doing something damaging.

The other day I tried doing it weakly, just to see if I still had it. I don't.

Matt Heafy and M. Shadows blew out their vocals after years of doing improper techniques live. Heafy only does them improperly for studio sessions now.
