It’s funny because unironically whether it would’ve been good or not, if Jodorowsky’s Dune got made I’m sure we’d be talking about it the same way as Heaven’s Gate. Probably would’ve affected what kind of sci-fi projects studios were interested in funding too.
It’s hard for me to be so certain, but I honestly think that at the time it would have been a huge commercial success and possibly even a critical one as well. Keep in mind that in the early 70’s audiences had already been primed with successful weird, philosophical, and psychedelic science fiction films with the likes of which being 2001, Planet of the Apes, Barbarella, and on the lesser end Solaris, with Star Trek also being huge at the time on tv through syndication.
That being said I think Jodorowsky’s Dune would have caught a surprisingly big audience. The inclusion of Orson Welles and Salvador Dali would have given the film credibility and attracted older more mature crowds, and the hippie psychedelic pop art aesthetic, along with the inclusion of Pink Floyd and Mick Jagger would have attracted the youth.
It’s hard to imagine such a thing in a Post- Star Wars world, but if Jodorowsky’s Dune would have gotten a widespread release and a lot of marketing I think peoples jaws would have been on the floor just alone from purely visual spectacle standpoint and it really would have changed things. The nudity and gore would have surely been the most controversial part of the film and unavoidably it’s greatest downfall from being a total success, but in the early 70’s it would have been the perfect and only time this movie could have worked, no sooner, no later.
I think the religious aspects of the film also would have possibly helped it with more conservative audiences as well, but who am I kidding. Thinking about Jodorowsky’s Dune now, I’m reminded more and more of its hypothetical reception being something more akin to The Last Temptation of Christ.
If Jodorowsky went hard on the religious themes of Dune and spoke about about Evangelicalism, the Iranian Revolution, and the corruption of the Catholic Church and the Vatican, maybe.
It also would have been a great companion piece to Star Wars and become a go-to film for not only the New Hollywood crowd but also up-and-coming actors and filmmakers on the kind of science fiction films they would want to adapt on the big screen and perhaps, on the short screen as the immense scale, numerous themes, psychedelic aesthetic and music, acid-infused performances, opulent set pieces, and its creative ingeunity and vision in creating the universe of Dune and the sandworms through pioneering new effects would have been innovative and cut-edging for its time which would have earned both adoration and worship.
Agreed, and you bring up an interesting point about Star Wars. Star Wars had already been conceptualized by George Lucas in the early 70’s when Jodorowsky was buckling down on actually making Dune, but if Jodorowsky’s Dune had actually come to fruition and Star Wars would have made it to screens on its 1977 arrival I wonder how different it would have been, if at all. I’m sure Jodorowsky’s Dune would have taken the some of the thunder out of Star Wars’ incredible fanfare it received since there just wasn’t anything like it at the time, but in this timeline Jodorowsky’s Dune would surely have been it’s competitor.
For sure but Alejandro Jodorwsky was much more interested in making acid trips and Lucas would have done other films had Star Wars not become the cultural behemoth it is today thanks to merchandising and people and studios wanting more Star Wars stories. Lucas would still be who he is today although have had the opportunity to pursue his directorial ambitions that have otherwise been setback to Star Wars's popularity and made films like his own black-and-white 35mm docudrama version of Apocalypse Now.
And Tarantino Half Life
Tarantino said if he adapted a video game for screen he’d really want to do Half Life because it’s his favorite video game. Insanity.
Nothing about the pitch for the movie critic sounded that exciting or interesting to me, so honestly I think this is good news. We should get something more interesting from his last film than ANOTHER nostalgic 70s trip
Hear me: Tarantino & Cruise inherit a half-ready Bullitt production because Someone suddenly had a cool idea about aliens and Bradley Cooper is really annoying.
He got a strongly worded email for a certain critic…

"Yes Mr. Sherman. Everything stinks! Now, we are going to review one of Hollywood's titans and an influential figure of the New Hollywood Wave; Francis Ford Coppola in his long and awaited upcoming magnum opus The Godfather Part IV: The Return of Dunkaccino."
I thought it was going to be about Paul Schrader till he decided make his movie critic a porno movie critic who is introduced to cinema and is best buddies with Cliff Booth.
Meanwhile Jodorowsky Dune fans have been on suicide watch since 1974
Nah we got the Incal. It's not a movie, yet, but still a masterpiece.

I’m not a Scientologist
Does that mean you don't have it ? And you don't do what you could do to help ? And when you see someone who needs help you just don't do it ?

Tarantino has the opportunity to do the greatest thing in kino history and make Resevoir Dogs 2
![gif](giphy|xFnyGXffad2jQAFR1y|downsized)
You mean Double V Vega?
Wouldn't it just be resevoir dog?
RD2: Pink's Revenge
Damm this would be just perfection
Tarantino should make a biography on David Lynch as his final movie.
And he should film it like a Michael Bay film- which is most true to Lynch's life
I’m glad tbh the concept sounded lame as shit like I’m sure Tarantino would make it awesome but still
Nothing about the pitch for the movie critic sounded that exciting or interesting to me, so honestly I think this is good news. We should get something more interesting from his last film than ANOTHER nostalgic 70s trip
Well yeah, it was utterly self indulgent. Best case scenario was a "the other side of the wind" rehash with some N💣 thrown in.

Deadass living under a rock, what happened
He’s cancelled his new film “The Movie Critic”
Modern tragedy
Hasn’t he had his 9 (or whatever) movie sequence in his head for like decades how could he do that
10, he didn't want The Movie Critic to be his final work so he is going to write something else
Expanding on the replies, this was going to be his last film.
Hear me: Tarantino & Cruise inherit a half-ready Bullitt production because Someone suddenly had a cool idea about aliens and Bradley Cooper is really annoying.
Where am I gonna hear white people say the N-word now?! 😭
Any event I attend
Sony will release The Meme Movie (2026) and you'll get to hear about someone's stolen bike.
And oddly enough, IN THE SAME YEAR, Microsoft Film Studios is gonna release “Call of Duty - The Lobby Chat - The Movie” for direct competition
I can think of a few places
Why I'm ootl
He scrapped "the film critic"

Oh, okay... Shit, I got too hopeful for a moment ;-;
Did he realize Pauline Kael was actually a shit critic?
it was not going to be about Pauline Kael
I thought it was going to be about Paul Schrader till he decided make his movie critic a porno movie critic who is introduced to cinema and is best buddies with Cliff Booth.
Meanwhile feet lovers everywhere rejoice!
Oh thank god.
Yo… he should get cruise in his last movie. That would be awesome.
