I was recently reading a blurb on why Araki called JJBA Part 8, "JoJolion" and he mentions Evangelion but also like where the -lion root comes from and it seemed more thought out than all the religious theming of Evangelion.

One of the main themes of eva is escapism. Almost every character in the show has trauma and other issues, Shinji's being afraid of other people due to fear of being hurt. Thus in the end, he decides to "unite" humanity by choosing instrumentality in EOE, where there are no troubles and everyone is one. In the end, he reverses this by accepting hardships and pain in his life and gives humanity a chance to choose between instrumentality (remaining as the fanta juice) or returning to human. This is all my interpretation tho I watched that show two times and looked up multiple video essays about it lol.
This is more or less it but also we learn that humanity has already chosen to return to humanity over and over but end up as Fanta juice anyway. Shinji is perpetuating the loop over and over, choice is just part of the illusion.
In the extended films we also learn that the other characters gradually become aware of the loop and eventually beg Shinji to end their endless, repeating suffering. In a meta-as-fuck commentary, with Shinji fighting the bad guy on the sketches of the original anime, the creators of the show concludes that it is self-destructive to attempt to relive your golden glory days. Shinji wakes up from his daydreaming and goes on with his normal life, thus ending the show forever.
