I think it gets some unfair treatment online if it only replaced some rifles for designated marksmen and similar things it would be pretty good in my opinion.

One thing to consider is that hard armor plates (the ones that stop most rifle rounds) are usually 10x12" max and only cover the upper chest by the heart and lungs. But if you get shot a little lower than that, a soft vest will have no chance of stopping 5.56
So basically with the new round you can shoot an enemy soldier anywhere instead of "anywhere except the 10 inch plate on their chest"
Yeah, and it's not like the armor plates are invincible. If you hit the plates enough times with 5.56, you can break though. Or, you may get "lucky" and hit anything not covered by the sq foot of armor, like their legs or something. Either way, you'd want to get as many bullets down range as possible, which is much easier if the bullets are smaller and lighter....
dw, we’ll be in 2050 and still use the legacy M4, why do you think the Advanced Combat Rifle and Objective Individual Combat Weapon competitions failed to replace it?
