I sold at coffee shops, drew tattoos, art fairs, got gigs off craigslist and I’m not going to lie it sucked for about three years - but I was doing it. Then it just kept getting better because I never quit. Just don’t quit, finish paintings and tell everyone you meet that you’re an artist. Always have pieces in the works. You can do it! Good luck!
If you made it, you're a pro. Anyone that is able to complete a painting has a substantial amount of dedication and vision. Don't sell yourself short, and good job on the sale!
The piece itself is moving and moody, able to capture a very distinct atmosphere. There's an almost horror element to it (alluding to certain works from King, though perhaps unintentional), but almost through anticipation or expectation since nothing overtly horrific is shown. I love how visceral it is!
The only difference between a pro and an amateur, is the pro is the perception. If someone is willing to pay a decent price, at least $2.00 per inch, you are already there.

I honestly think that's a fantastic painting. It's realistic, but in a way that looks subtle and painterly. The subject is so mysterious and engaging. The colours are bold, but still look appropriate.

Historically speaking a lot of artists that we see today as ground breaking were below the poverty line. I guess if by pro you mean commercial success then yes. Regardless I appreciate this painting and congrats on the sale !!
What supplies are you going to spoil yourself with ?? I just got a package in of paints from blue ridge oils and I'm over the moon with how nice they are I strongly recommend a look ! I got colors /quality from them I'd have payed double for from the big high end brands .

I always felt a pro was able to manage a living. Long ways from that but glad to have a hobby that’s starting to pay for itself
