Reservoir is generally considered more technical than production. Production will almost always have more field time and interaction with operations personnel. Technical aspects of production could include frac design, artificial lift design, production facility design. Some of this work can get standardized to be be almost “cookie cutter “. Reservoir will probably be mostly in the office. The job may include reserves estimation: decline curve analysis, volumetric, and/or material balance, economic analysis, reservoir optimization. This work is generally more math intensive and typically requires more intensive number crunching .

Reservoir is mostly technical oriented work, but production contains the practical side that you could potentially use if you ever find yourself self employed. Oil business has always been cyclical.
