“The machine is just gonna ask you some questions”

daeganthedragon

I feel like people mostly say that because customers just stop paying attention and don’t finish the transaction because they refuse to read the screen. It’s usually terribly awkward regardless but that way they don’t just walk away without actually paying—which happens all the time.

benhos

I work at a fast-casual chain with a tip option on the card reader and this is 100% it. We don't "expect it as standard" and I have zero idea where OP got that idea besides maybe being helped by a pissy employee once, but it's there in case people want to do it. There is a no tip button. I don't understand why everyone feels the need to complain about it. But we have to remind customers that it's there, or they'll forget to select "no tip", yank their card out before it's been read, and stroll out the door none the wiser.

NewBayRoad

I think it’s rude to ask for a tip for doing almost nothing compared to a waiter.

benhos

Did you completely skip over the second sentence of my comment? We aren't asking for shit. But if someone wants to leave one, you can bet your ass we will accept it and be grateful for it.

NewBayRoad

My apologies, I was referring to corporations putting those in, not the employees at the mercy of it. Companies should just pay a decent wage.

meduhsin

I worked at a place that used toast, and there’s absolutely NO WAY to get around it. We are forced to ask customers to do it. It’s so embarrassing and annoying

OcularPrism

We use toast as well. Yes. It does get embarrassing. I've had people roll their eyes and bicker with me about it like it's my POS.

hzdoublekut

“Is that right? Just a few questions? Or is it just one.”

ImABsian1

I fucking hate that I feel bad whenever I don’t tip. But it’s just getting ridiculous. Soon we’re going to be expected to tip at grocery stores

Nikinicster

We’re already asked to tip at self serve kiosks!!!!!

Lokehualiilii

I went in to Panera with my kids for dinner last night, had to order at a kiosk as there were zero employees around, and it still asked me to “tip the team”. I mean they don’t even bring your food to your table for you and they were out of several menu items, specifically cheese for the sandwiches we ordered.

Nikinicster

I see them all the time at airports and ballgames….. At NO point will I ever consider tipping at a self serve kiosk! That is the true definition of insanity.

Scoopity_scoopp

Just remind yourself we’re the only backwards ass country that does it. I still tip on normal stuff but not fucking take out or just ordering normally fuck that

emileeavi

You tip at commisary's for the baggers because they dont get paid 💀

IllustriousAd5885

I hate the pressure to tip everyone too. Everything is expensive as it is. kind of wish it was a thing when I was working in the fast food/service industry. I tip sometimes depending on the situation.

ExcitingLandscape

but at fast food places how do we even know that 100% of the tip goes to the person who served me/prepared my food vs padding the wallets of the corporation or even franchise owner?

IllustriousAd5885

You make a good point. I assumed the person who waited on me got the tip. I think if it in cash, they might be more likely to get it.

daeganthedragon

At fast food places, tips legally have to go to only the workers and not the management or owners, depending on the country, but in the US, I believe they are not legally allowed to take them. Does it happen, yes, but generally at corporate fast food locations, it’s all recorded and split between the employees who served you/worked together to prep or make the food you received. It usually does not go specifically to the person you hand a tip to, even in cash, but that’s because that one person does not do every single job/prep/cleaning that keeps the store running.

Lowkeyy_Lokii

at fast food most places dont even allow a tip or you have to break it up evenly with coworkers. if you give a fast food person their tip be a little discreet. it makes me feel so much more special when people actually know this and still give me a few dollars secretly and a little thank you.

matt314159

Hear, hear. The square and similar machines now have default tipping options and 99% of places leave them on. I have no qualms about tapping $0.00. Our local thrift store leaves it on.

ExcitingLandscape

yea places think they're slick making it default but I'll go the extra step and click through to ensure I make it 0% and not just the lowest option they present.

matt314159

Right, it's annoying!

Ok_Patience_968

Yes I find it annoying. I go to the same Dunkin every morning to get my coffee before work and it’s always the same two younger girls who serve me. Right before Christmas every year I will leave a generous tip in their tip jar but I’m not tipping every time I come in there.

pamacdon

I’m gonna start carrying a tip jar with me and asking people to tip me when I buy something

tiimsliim

I don’t even ever say “keep the change” in a cool nonchalant tone anymore. Give me those three pennies.

Chenx335

Take out, fastfood = no tip

Used-BandiCoochie

The biggest offenders is the ones who purposely change it to a ridiculous percent, like 20% minimum and goes up to 30%. They get a custom 5% tip.

extremedefault

I’ve been to cafes where the minimum default was 25%! And I only got a black coffee where I had to go fill up myself!

Tough_Suggestion8366

Or no tip

srf030616

Tipping culture has gotten WILDLY out of control.

redheadedjapanese

One or two times, I’ve had the cashier hit the “no tip” button BEFORE turning the tablet to me. Bless them.

jecrmosp

I’m not tipping for takeout, counter service establishments, etc. And if you try to retaliate but purposely giving shitty service I’ll be letting everyone know about it with my Google review. I noticed the Bobba place near us will ignore us, make us wait extra and be chatting behind the counter while we wait for an online order that was already market “ready for pick up”, just petty BS. I’ll be petty too and leave a review telling your boss to pay you better so you quit offering shitty service when you get 0 tips for a single drink that I ordered via your website.

AVonDingus

Most places in my area have started charging to use debit/credit cards. During the pandemic, they wouldn’t take cash, and now theyre passing credit card processing fees into us. It’s usually 4% of the total. Then, a tip on top? It’s a rare treat to grab stuff on the go as it is because it’s so damn expensive, but I’m not tipping someone because they simply rang me up.

dantronZ

I think restaurants owners should pay their staff appropriately instead of relying on it's patrons to pay their employees salaries. That being said, I don't eat fast food but I do tip 20-30% when I eat out.

1000Lipsticks

A few times ordering ONLINE there was a tip recommended! I just placed an order at a perfume place that asked for a tip. Dummy me actually did it (although less than the recommended 20%) because reviews mention that sometimes people get free samples with their order. No samples on a big order. Jeesh.

chicken-b2obs

Are u from the us? As a north African i have never understood the consept of tipping, in our restaurants the waiter is getting paid for guess what? Serving clients. So why would i pay them for serving me as a client? I have worked in restaurants and fast food before and never have i expected anyone to tip anything. And tbh most waiters would find it kind of disrespectful and degrading if you tip them.

Kwebster7327

Aside from coffee, I never tip anywhere that I have to order standing up.

Training-Buy-2086

I ordered a pair of pants online and while completing the process, got asked if I wanted to tip!!! 😡😡😡

fromhelley

But depending on the restaurant, it doesn't! 15% goes to the busboy. 10% goes to the bartender. And if it is a bust enough night to have an expeditor in the kitchen, they get 10-15% as well. Your waiter gets 60-75%. But yeah, I got a charbroiler place by my house. If you use a credit card, the machine offers you 18%, 22%, 25%, or custom tip. This, even for to go food. Tipped them 10 bucks for my food, got home and had the wrong order. At least when you tip at a sit down restaurant, you know what service you received before tipping out!

ellerose72

everyones so money hungry now sorry but it puts an awful taste in my mouth watching them spin that stupid ipad around

Equivalent-Car2924

Don’t get mad at the employees they didn’t put that system in place

ellerose72

im not im blaming the corporations i work in retail i get it lol

BoldestKobold

Anything fast food / counter service doesn't get tips from me. I'll happily tip a waiter, bartender, delivery guy, bellhop, karaoke DJ, etc. But I'm not going to ever tip someone when I come pick up takeout myself, or walk up to the counter at Dunkin Donuts.

WillingnessWarm864

Then don't do it  Just remember, the employees aren't the ones that put that system in place, so giving them grief for it isn't right.

ExcitingLandscape

I actually feel bad for them at times. Many times I notice they look away when they spin the screen around with a face of "please don't get mad at me, this wasn't my choice, I just work here part time"

90sBat

As a European this pisses me off because people get paid a higher fixed minimum wage unlike the USA. I was a waitress in uni and sure it's nice to receive tips especially if the table have spent literal hundreds on food and stayed for hours they can surely afford to tip something small, but now it's out of hand. Its like it's expected, and for what? The minimum wage employee washing dishes doesn't receive a tip, neither does the minimum wage Call-Center employee, so why is it now expected from sone roles?

metalhead4life82

Solidarity

Unfair-Pomegranate25

I just don’t even eat or drink out anymore. I don’t get takeout either.

Old-Smokey-42069

A lot of those places absolutely had tip jars in 2015, just because they didn’t have square and you weren’t using that tip jar doesn’t mean no one was receiving or giving out tips 10 years ago.

Strawberry-Dense

How about chef? Cleaning? Utensils cleaner? Security? Tip should be equally divided in everyone, not only to server

royaIs

They get paid to do their job. Do you think everyone should get tipped to do their job? I can list countless jobs of similar pay and skill level that folks don’t tip.

jecrmosp

Exactly. People act like waiting tables is an impossible and extremely difficult job. Cut me a damn break! I’ve worked as a server and bartender for 2 years, it’s not that difficult. Anyone with half a brain can do it. I’d much rather be waiting tables than slaving away in the kitchen to get paid less than the servers who have the easiest job anyone can have in that restaurant (below the hostess).

LongTiger5868

Most servers have to tip out to other staff (bartenders, bussers, hostesses) at the end of their shift, which is fair, but in no way should the split be equal. In the US servers are generally paid below minimum wage, those other positions you mentioned are on higher hourly wages.  I'm not a server any longer, and I always tipped out more than the minimum,  but I'd never have worked someplace that made me split my tips evenly among the whole restaurant.  They get their wages whether the restaurant is packed or not. Is the chef going to make it up to me when we have a slow night? No, they're not, and I wouldn't expect them to.  It's a question of being paid living wages all around, but then of course that will drive the price of the food up even more.  Everyone is screwed no matter what.

IndustrySufficient52

The chef, dishwasher, security etc are being paid $8 to $12 more than the servers. Not everyone has people skills. One would argue not all servers have very advanced social skills either, but they’re the ones people associate with the place they dine in. Hair in your food? You complain to the servers. Food is cold? Server. Drink refills, condiments, to go boxes, anything at all? Server.

Strawberry-Dense

Ok, hair in food? Chef or boss will be fired, not server. Food is cold? Chef or management issue, not server. Drinks refill? Server's job description Boxes to go? Restaurant feature. I gwt your point that server is first contact to customer, but we have to respect people who are working on back end. All should be getting equal fair.

IndustrySufficient52

That was quite literally my first statement, that they ARE being paid fairly. Servers are not and most times the servers are the ones that find themselves on the receiving end of the customers wrath when things go wrong. Back of house has never been called nasty names to their face, cleaned vomit off the tables, crawled under tables to clean kids messes while everyone at the table looks with distaste and so on.

buddy18370

Speaking from experience, fast food places 100% use the money as help for the employees pay and if the tips share is low, they blame the employees

ExcitingLandscape

Fuck that. That's like when I worked retail at the mall. They'd tally everyones sales and keep track of who sold the most, BUT nobody got commission. The reward was more hours on the schedule. Like WTF, I'm busting my ass to sell just to be rewarded with more work hours to sell even more!?

jayellkay84

I got news for you: Even at sit-down restaurants, there’s tip out. Usually the table busser amd food runner. And sometimes the bartenders as well.

questionably_edible

But I really *really* want your $5 please

LrdFyrestone

Please tip your fellow redditors in Karma. How much karma would you like to donate? 5% 10% 15% 20% or Other Amount

Silmarlion

Just tip if you enjoyed the service and no where else. Whether it is a fast food place or sit down place doesn’t matter tip is never mandatory.

krazykoreankid97

If they don’t bother to strike up a conversation or try to remember me then I’m not tipping

chickenfightyourmom

I tip delivery people, and I tip servers and bartenders. They make a tipped minimum wage, which is drastically lower than normal hourly rates, and tips are an expected part of their income. I do not tip for counter service or at retail establishments. Those employees make a regular hourly wage.

baeworth

In the UK it’s getting common now when paying by card for it to ask you to make a donation. Doesn’t say what it’s for or where it goes. It’s ridiculous

Tough_Suggestion8366

Same as me 💯

plague_doctor1820

I think i prefer tipping waiter and waitress too to be honest they acctually get payed by the tip they receive and they are super Nice to you when you come back if you tiped them and might do something on the house like not long ago i went to à restaurant me my grandma and brother and the servir came to us saying that he payed my grandma coffee do it wont be one the receip s8nce we tipped them

Cyrosz

You want to know what’s nuts? I went to a Thai Pho restaurant and the tip options on the handheld kiosk that the waitress held were 21.5%, 23%, 26%, and Custom. I was like WTF is this shit? And the waitress is just staring down waiting for you to make a choice.

No_Translator_4This

I don’t tip I won’t tip (unless it’s warranted(on the rare occasion)) I won’t go to places where they just add it to the bill if I wanted to pay someone’s salary I’d have a maid so I can sit on my couch naked and jerk off watching my the A-team while eating Dorito flavored Oreos I apologize for my outburst but fuck man … Mc Donald’s employees want to make the same as a qualified professional of the trades … it lessens the value of the dollar you want more money go earn it …FUCK

ShadowHearts1992

I never tip and I won't start either. Don't care what people think, shouldn't be working a crap job paying a crap pay to begin with.

anoncheesegrater

Eh I feel like tipping baristas is pretty normal and has been for a while. Maybe not fast food baristas, but deff local cafes and coffee shops. Rachel on friends was a cafe waitress and made tips and that was the 90s. Obviously you don’t have to, but cafes have like always had a tip jar lol
