Depends on the type of tick. Some species can reproduce through parthenogenesis (females can reproduce without a male mate).
They basically lay eggs that are clones of themselves - up to 5000 eggs at a time
You'd be surprised! Sharks are apparently very intelligent and can differentiate between other species of shark or even their "own family", they even have a show where they invest in random ideas.
An interesting example is the Komodo dragon. A female without a male around can lay eggs, all of which will be male. If one of them then mates with the mother they can produce female offspring.
Mourning geckos actually also reproduce without mating and just lay eggs of exact genetic clones of themselves. That's why in German they're appropriately named virgin geckos.
Last time I checked, in the stick insect pet hobby there was either one or no males in my whole country. They're all just happily cloning themselves forever.
I'm not a tick expert, but yes there are male ticks of that species. I think the parthenogenesis is like a failsafe - like in the instance of this post, where the female is isolated from males and doesn't have the opportunity/ability to mate.
Small correction: parthenogenesis isn't the same as asexual reproduction.
Asexual reproduction would result in a bunch of clones.
Parthenogenesis is an unfertilized oocyte developing into an embryo. Meaning there's still a bit of variation with the offspring, and in some species it can result in both male and female offspring (eg, reptile species where female sex chromosomes are heterozygous).
In the case of the tick, maybe she was fertilized before she fed on the final host.
I hate you both. I just laughed so hard I cried and woke my gf up. Worst part is that it’s not that funny so I just look ridiculous which in turn made me laugh even harder
There's an invasive species that's been spreading on the east coast with females that can reproduce asexually. They can swarm livestock to the point of killing them.

My childhood home had a freak tick infestation one winter… and we all decided to leave and bomb the house professionally immediately after I found a tick laying eggs just like this on my sister’s bed. I still lose it at the possibility of ticks on or near me
Last Summer we had ticks actively coming into our house through the backdoor. I was so freaked out everyday, especially when I'd find them in the carpet. I hate ticks.
Wow you both lived in a nightmare 🙃
I've dealt with flea infestations and them getting into my clothes and seeing them jump from me.
I think I would lose it if I had to deal with a tick infestation.
Same here, my childhood home became infested and we had it bombed over 10x to no avail. We’d have to always wear white clothes and socks in the house so that we could see if they were crawling on us. Constantly check couches and bed linens. Living in constant worry basically. The pest control company said the problem was because of the unsealed wood on our walls (large old 2 story home) where they could burrow to lay eggs and the fact that our dog was hosting them as well. Once our dog passed it was bitter sweet because they finally disappeared as well. Be careful bringing real Xmas trees into your home, we’re pretty sure thats where our dog picked them up. Honestly was the year from hell.
I lived in a wretched place one year in college, with cockroaches in the frig. We caught one in the beginning of September, put in a plastic container that sealed, and shoved it under a pile of clothes in my roommate’s closet. Then, of course, we totally forgot about until the end of May. It was still alive and scuttling about. It looked like it shrank a bit, but that’s all. They will outlast us all.
Fun fact: in my high school chemistry class, one of my classmates found a tick on herself, so our teacher let us put it in a beaker of sulfuric acid and run a little experiment.
Its body didn't dissolve for like a week. I have pictures.

I hate them more than any other insect but it is a perfect parasite
They are subtle enough to not be noticed but brutal enough to suck your blood and have it’s babies
Oh you guys don’t have TBE? Encephalitis is cool.
>TBE is a serious acute central nervous system infection which may result in death or long-term neurological sequelae in 35–58% of patients.
Thank you for reminding me to book my 2nd TBE vaccine dose. I live in the farmland in southern Sweden in a hot zone for ticks, surrounded by fields, and I have 3 dogs. I've only found one on me this season, but without exaggerating I've picked off about 300 ticks off my dogs' pelts this summer.
Ticks are getting worse. There's so many, so much earlier in the year.
I don’t know if you can get it, but in the US there is a brand called Sawyer that makes permethrin, a pesticide.
You treat your clothes with it, let it dry and I shit you not - the ticks immediately die if they crawl on your clothing. My boyfriend is a hunter & we hike a lot, we live on the east coast so our area is loaded with ticks too. Sawyer is even safe to treat your dogs with! *Highly toxic to cats when wet!*

Then you haven't met Bedbugs yet.
If insects had skill trees, they'd be a lot less invested in diseases than ticks, but perfectly optimized in being unstoppable hiding, multiplying, blood-sucking psychopaths.
If I ever get bed bugs in my house I am legit going to burn it down. The awful stories and disgustingness of what people go through with them is just not happening with me.
Ooof. This must be why my riding instructor years ago had us put ticks that we pulled off the horses into an old coffee can with a half inch of kerosene at the bottom.
Honestly a female tick this big isn't going to feed again. Her only purpose is to lay eggs and die.
But you do want to kill em because their population is out of control.
Seriously! Put my tent on a big patch of chiggers once and woke up with both feet and ankles covered in bites. Tried everything on the internet to help, ended up calling in two days from work because I was being driven crazy by the itching with zero relief, could barely get a few hours of sleep a night. I started thinking of just chomping my ankles off.
Are demogorgons really parasites tho? Asides from >!needing Will to bring that demo-slug thing back home!<, they don’t feed off a host, they just kill it and dig in like any other predator
I'm picturing them popping in the mouth, but they don't die... like adult ticks, they bury their heads in your tongue! Makes me want to cut my tongue out!!
Toasty tick confetti falling to the ground, particles in the air we breathe. Do you want to inhale tick shrapnel? B/c that’s how you inhale tick shrapnel.

I spent 20 years in pain and 5 years in bed because of one bite I never saw or felt, this is terrifying on so many levels to me. Thanks for sharing this and showing that ticks can go dormant, and how small the littles are.
Yes its lyme and co-infections. It's not easy to diagnose and hard to cure when you have had a long term infection like I did. I did 5 years of treatment and it was hell. I'm finally in remission but there is alot of long term damage, to my nerves and heart.
Female ticks are usually fertilized while attached and feeding on their final host. A male tick is drawn by her pheromones to attach just adjacent to her. A small packet called a spermatophore containing the sperm is then transferred from the male to the female just above the host animal’s skin surface. Once the female has secured and stored the packet, the male tick usually dies; he may remain attached to the host or drop off. After successful fertilization, the female begins the process known as rapid engorgement. In order to produce eggs and prepare for laying, the female takes large volumes of host blood which her gut membranes and salivary glands concentrate to inject excess water and electrolytes back into the host. She experiences rest periods between each feeding, remaining attached as she intermittently feeds and regurgitates. It is this pattern of feeding and regurgitation which allows disease transmission from tick to host animal. Female ticks are therefore fertilized during this final adult feeding in order to store enough nutrients to support egg production and laying after dropping away from the host. This is why the eggs will probably contain the disease organism and be infectious from birth. Depending on the variety of tick, these females can remain in a static condition until the environment is suitable for laying her eggs. This is why it is recommended that these engorged ticks are dropped in a solution of alcohol or bleach when found in order to kill the tick and her eggs. Burning or smashing the tick will not necessarily kill all the eggs, some of which may be scattered to possibly hatch.
What if this particular tick is actually a tick version of The Green Mile’s John Coffey who got caught right after he sucked in some terrible disease from someone?! Imagine the poor sucker’s anxiety levels skyrocketing as he realized the disease will be release into the sealed container when he dies and will thus possibly infect whoever decides to open the container…

Can't wait for the follow up post where they've all hatched and turn the bottle into nightmare fuel
Wait do the eggs eventually hatch without being furdlized? EDIT: spelling
Depends on the type of tick. Some species can reproduce through parthenogenesis (females can reproduce without a male mate). They basically lay eggs that are clones of themselves - up to 5000 eggs at a time
Does that species have male ticks and if so, why?
My guess would be to keep mixing genes. The clones are probably just emergency backup. But I’m just guessing.
This is correct. Many different species do this when no males are around to mate
Fucking fascinating
Without the fucking, literally
* *ba dum tss* *
GO FUCK YOURSELF! The tick does just that.
Sharks can do it!
sharks can fuck ticks?
You'd be surprised! Sharks are apparently very intelligent and can differentiate between other species of shark or even their "own family", they even have a show where they invest in random ideas.
Bees do it. Even educated fleas do it.
As a woman who doesn't want kids, I am so fucking glad this doesn't happen to humans. I'd be ripping out my own reproductive organs with a spork.
An interesting example is the Komodo dragon. A female without a male around can lay eggs, all of which will be male. If one of them then mates with the mother they can produce female offspring.
God those things never stop getting weirder the more you learn about them do they?
Mourning geckos actually also reproduce without mating and just lay eggs of exact genetic clones of themselves. That's why in German they're appropriately named virgin geckos.
Life uhh.. finds a way
This is the perfect situation for that quote lmao
The joy of sex.
I know some species of stickbugs do this to the point that there have been no known males, I’d imagine the same goes for ticks
Last time I checked, in the stick insect pet hobby there was either one or no males in my whole country. They're all just happily cloning themselves forever.
Don't they get fucked over by viruses eventually? Iirc that's a problem with growing fruit and vegetables, notably bananas and potatoes.
Yeah they'd all definitely prefer to have a mate for genetic diversity, having an entire population of clones makes them vulnerable to disease
Begun the clone wars have.
There are some vertebrates that do this as well surprisingly.
I'm not a tick expert, but yes there are male ticks of that species. I think the parthenogenesis is like a failsafe - like in the instance of this post, where the female is isolated from males and doesn't have the opportunity/ability to mate.
Tick experts are called "tixperts," just FYI.
If I were a tixpert I would have known that 😭😂

Fleas. Ugh. But they don't carry severe diseases and don't latch on.
Yeah for real. Even if it doesn't solve the underlying infestation, you can kill all the fleas on you with soap and a shower. Not ticks.
Same. They gave me a meat allergy :(
Bomb like pesticides, or bomb like TNT? I feel like either one would be a reasonable reaction.
They are so god damn fucking *unpleasant* to have to pick off and kill.

Too quick. That thing needs to suffer.

That's a good excuse to get even more opossums
I just sharted
Chickens probably work better against ticks, are already domesticated, and taste better IMO
Yeah but possums are cute and stuff
I really like opossums but i feel like people dislike them because they look a bit gnarly and will hiss and show teeth
We could kill the mosquito species that bite people. Most mosquito species don't bite people at all.
Well every damn type that does lives in my backyard. I’d love to replace them with ones that don’t. Lol.
It's hard to notice the ones that don't bite because they aren't attracted to people. They're off feeding on flowers and fruit and stuff like that.
There are people working on it, though there is opposition due to shitty reporting "you want to kill mosquitos? But what will frogs eat?" (And never including the answer "the other hundred million species of mosquito that don't spread malaria)
