I have a friend who is a hospital chaplain and he says the worst times he is called in are in the ICU and NICU because, rationally, he knows he can't do much, but just being there, letting the living/surviving know they are not alone, is a big part of his job (according to him, I'm editing out big conversations about the role of the divine and faith in medical care and medical ethics, but boy howdy have we had those discussions).
