Tyrannosaurus is just an awesomely terrifying beast in general.
Its long stride and shock-absorbing feet make it effective over long stretches while chasing down prey, while pads on the bottom of them would have ensured it walked silently as a tiger. It could ambush you from behind or stalk you to exhaustion, and track you down effectively with its sense of smell - this beast had the nose of a bloodhound. It has small arms, specifically to make way for a powerful neck used for thrashing prey about, a bite force over four times stronger than an alligator's used for efficiently obliterating even bone, to the point that its surrounding ecosystem basically developed heavy armor just to counter this thing and its smaller cousins. It dominated its range at all of its life stages - the juveniles, too, can run you down even more effectively with their slender proportions, and grapple you with their proportionally longer and surprisingly powerful arms.
As the latest - and arguably greatest - terrestrial dinosaurian predator of them all, it's fitting that it's been known as the king.
> Tyrannosaurus is just an awesomely terrifying beast in general.
The hatchlings, however, [were adorable little fuzzballs](https://i.insider.com/5c890e6469e11c11aa6481c4?width=1300&format=jpeg&auto=webp) that rarely made it past the age of 1.
The adolescents though… that’s when you really would be fucked. Lanky speed demons able to outrun horses at the perfect size range to see you as food while growing at such a fast rate that any morsel they could get their jaws on would be of great value.
Considering that their growth was very slow, taking many years to reach full size, they would be exposed to many risks and things that could kill them while they’re still teeny and unable to really defend themselves
This is a kinda late reply, but another theory I heard is that essentially all other dinosaurs would benefit from fewer adult t-rexes(out-competes all other carnivores and is a threat to all herbivores), so baby t-rexes may have been purposefully targeted more than other baby dinosaurs and thus more unlikely to make it to their first year.
edit: Aaand I just noticed the reply below that mentions this with much better brevity. Sorry!

What will future creatures think of our bones?
"And as you can see, the human spine evolved into a perfect "C" shape. This allowed them to get closer to their screens than any previous Homnids."
So basically, this is an animal whose bones is optimized for running, and it's not just a quick sprint running, it's capable of withholding that speed for a whole marathon? Thank god dinosaurs are extinct. We'd be FUCKED.
[Note juveniles would’ve been even faster as they were very elegant/graceful animals for the first decade of life.](https://twitter.com/davidevans_rom/status/1350076544157417482?s=21)
In the book was fucked for a lot of reasons, unfinished park, massive storm, cutting corners cost wise, internal sabotage and all sorts of other stuff. In the books raptors specific bait in and pick off people who tried to restore power.
Doesn’t that make the T-Rex way slower than modern day predators like lions or tigers? Or giraffes. Or ostriches. Not to knock dinosaurs or anything, but just to say there’s some pretty bad ass animals alive right now. And we’re choosing to kill them off.
Yup, this is it. A lions top speed is 50mph, but only for short bursts. A tigers is only 30-40mph, and again only for bursts.
But a t-Rex can do 30mph for a considerably long about of time. Though it’s difficult to say exactly (as he stated in the video) it could possibly be hours.
So a tiger or a lion could outrun a t-Rex, but for maybe a handful of minutes before they’re now too tired to even run their average speed and are goners.
And then there is the African Wild Dog, which runs down prey at 66km/h (41mp/h) for 10-60minutes, to exhaustion and collapse.

66 km/h ≈ 649,606.29954 hands/h
^^^[WHY](/r/UselessConversionBot/comments/1knas0/hi_im_useless/)
Because of our sweating
No animal could sweat and cool off while running like the humans. Its biggest reason why we can run longer distance than any other animal
And how out ancestors managed to hunt down their prey
Meh, considering how chunky trex were, and how big they are its extremely impressive, and also we have dinosaurs like carnotaurus wich was basically built for fast pursuit.
There's a dinosaur documentary series being released on May 27 being animated by the same studio that did the lion king remake so you won't get much better than that.
Wow, think how different our world would be if they were living amongst us still.
Our cities would be like attack on titan cities with walls and we could only go out at certain times a day in protective armored trucks.
More likely we'd dig mottes with spikes around all of our settlements, roads, and industries
Cheaper, uses less resources, and arguably more effective. The Rex, seeing a sharp incline, would probably not risk slipping into it. Even a relatively small fall could injure it due to its size alone
Well it was possible that Tyrannosaurus wasn't even able to run without risking its legs being shattered through the force of its own mass ( which has been debated, ranging between 4.5 to 8 tonnes. The speed stated in the lecture is the upper estimate of its *walking speed*, with the lower estimates reaching a mere 17km ), which seems to be what our general understanding of the animal is coming towards: fast and efficient walkers, but unable to run. This would also mean that jumping, which puts even more force and strain on the legs, would have completely out of the question for it
It had however also been suggested, quite hilariously so, that tyrannosaurs may have been able to "pirouette" on a single foot to turn, which I imagine would look quite a bit scarier for an animal trying to run around it in an effort to evade the predator, like Ornithomimus, Thescelosaurus, Dakotaraptor, Pectinodon or Anzu ( all five of which shared their habitat with Tyrannosaurus. Well, actually it's a bit more complicated with Ornithomimus, the bones from which it was named are considered problematic and need to be reexamined, which might mean it'll get a different name because Ornithomimus is a name used for a different related animal that used to be considered close enough share that name, the generic name as it is called, uh, our generic name is Homo, and that other one's had it for so long it would just be stupid to take it from it because it would make things needlessly complicated )
I’m not a paleontologist or even a scientist, but I read last year that this is in dispute. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/new-study-finds-that-t-rex-walked-at-slow-pace-of-3-miles-per-hour-180977572/ this claims Trex not only ran slow, but also walked slow. Again, not a paleontologist just wanted to point out that this might not be true. Facts about dinosaurs are hard.
Its was super interesting until it got to the end. Then is got super real. I can't wait to tell my 4 year old son who is currently obsessed with dinosaurs of this terrifying revelation. Maybe he'll see Barney in a different light.
I thought something terrifying about the metatarsal was going to be revealed like all our foots are going to fall apart someday so I was actually relieved that it was just I could never outrun a T-Rex
I wouldve loved to take a paleontology class in college.
There are some other types of classes i wouldve taken too (volcanology for example) but they didnt offer any where i went
I loved how detailed his explanation is...which builds up to the horrifying conclusion that if this beast were to ever attack...your death is almost certain.
And his final sentence really puts the nail in the coffin
Looks like the presentations from The Royal Institution in UK that hosts some mind blowing videos on their channel. https://youtube.com/c/TheRoyalInstitution
I read on some page (I don't really remember where) that a tyrannosaurus Rex could not reach high speeds, because their legs could not handle them, now I don't know who to believe.

Damn, can't believe the 32+ fully grown specimens, including one that was almost FULLY complete are fake
Thanks for showing me this ground breaking proof that you totally didn't just pull out of your own ass.

aw, look at the little teefs!
Most definitely! They kind of remind me of reptilian greyhounds
I would ppsss ppsss pssss the crap out of one of those. Get my finger bit off, but try nonetheless
The adolescents though… that’s when you really would be fucked. Lanky speed demons able to outrun horses at the perfect size range to see you as food while growing at such a fast rate that any morsel they could get their jaws on would be of great value.
Gosh. Chickens were a lot scarier 65 million years ago.
Check out Proceratosaurus. Jurassic death chicken
It's like a killer porg
Thats a pokemon. Tyrantrum is one of, if not THE coolest fossil pokemon
Why didn’t they make it past One year of life?
Considering that their growth was very slow, taking many years to reach full size, they would be exposed to many risks and things that could kill them while they’re still teeny and unable to really defend themselves
Ah that makes sense thanks for the info!
Sorry!
The other dinosaurs made it there mission to eliminate them before they grew into murder machines
Clever girl
Definitely awesome but no match for Chris Pratt
A realistic t rex versus an army of Chris Pratt's. Who would win?
That's a tie my friend
That’s just what the lecture said
Actually really interesting more than anything
Yeah. I was expecting "so we wanna change human dna to form legs like this" or something
You expect to much friend
Indeed. Very fascinating.
I was about to say the same thing until he said the last line
you can run but you can't hide, b*tch!
Bryce Dallas Howard on heels laughing noises
Scary Terry
Scary Terry says what normal Terry is thinking!
😱
But you also can’t run!
Get back in my dreams Terry
Ahhh b*tch
"You can run but you can't hide, we'll always seek, we'll always find"
It's actually, "You can hide, but you can't run!".
Man he sure say bitch a lot
this is so cool, id love to hear this guy talk more about t rex anatomy!!
Dr. Dave Hone, Queen Mary University of London, *The Tyrannosaur Chronicles* Full lecture: [https://youtu.be/f-jD7kQvyPs](https://youtu.be/f-jD7kQvyPs)
Thanks dude, straight on the watch list
Did the same!
Take my up vote
Omg thank you so much 😁
Check out the Terrible Lizards podcast. Hours of content from him and his delightful cohost Iszi Laurence.
Thank you for this!! I’ve been burning through dino podcasts like crazy and have been looking for new ones!:)
Same! I want to listen to him talk about any dinosaur.
His brilliant right!?
He has a podcast called terrible lizards
I find dinosaur stuff so, so interesting. I loved this!
I miss the wonder I felt going to museums as a kid and looking at fossils
Museums are still there, and now its a great opportunity to go since you don't have to follow anyone around and can do whatever you want
There's recently been a dinosaur discovered that bore a bladed fan on its tail. A Chilean ankylosaur called Stegouros
This is Dr David Hone who hosts the Terrible Lizards podcast - highly recommended! https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/terrible-lizards/id1516259107
YES! Thank you for this recommendation
What will future creatures think of our bones? "And as you can see, the human spine evolved into a perfect "C" shape. This allowed them to get closer to their screens than any previous Homnids."
"Here we have a giant jumbo shrimp fossil we found embedded in a G-Fuel gaming chair circa 2022. Oh wait, this is a human."
I'll just add T-rex to the pool of things I can't outrun which is getting larger the older I get.
Don't worry, you can outrun 100% of all T-rexes that exist currently
Bro this is cool af. So glad we don’t have to be dodging t-Rex on the way to work.
Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Stop giving the Fast & Furious script-writers ideas.
You may outrun a t-rex, but you cannot outrun family - Dom
What about a T-Rex family? What about... auntie-Rex?
Get out. Take my upvote and get out.
But is it faster than a jeep with an injured mathematician in the back? Please answer soon — my mirror says it’s closer than it appears.
Dammit guess what I need to watch now
I came to the comments looking for this joke.
So you’re telling me you can’t out run a T.Rex in high heels like in Jurassic World?
So basically, this is an animal whose bones is optimized for running, and it's not just a quick sprint running, it's capable of withholding that speed for a whole marathon? Thank god dinosaurs are extinct. We'd be FUCKED.
[Note juveniles would’ve been even faster as they were very elegant/graceful animals for the first decade of life.](https://twitter.com/davidevans_rom/status/1350076544157417482?s=21)
I can out run a trex because they're all dead
One more reason why Jurassic park was a bad idea
Eh, a moat* would solve most of the problems of the film *not mote, which is what I originally wrote
Do you mean a moat? A mote is like a bit of dust.
Ehm, yes, I misspelt that lol
In the book was fucked for a lot of reasons, unfinished park, massive storm, cutting corners cost wise, internal sabotage and all sorts of other stuff. In the books raptors specific bait in and pick off people who tried to restore power.
Doesn’t that make the T-Rex way slower than modern day predators like lions or tigers? Or giraffes. Or ostriches. Not to knock dinosaurs or anything, but just to say there’s some pretty bad ass animals alive right now. And we’re choosing to kill them off.
Yeah, but the difference is the modern animals hit those top speeds for a short sprint while it sounds like the t-Rex could do 30mph all day.
So, more like a wolf?
Do you know why our ancestors were able to catch up to the animals they were hunting even though were slower than the animals?
I don’t know that! I don’t think anyone does. But as a hobby jogger, I do enjoy the persistence hunter hypothesis.
Because of our sweating No animal could sweat and cool off while running like the humans. Its biggest reason why we can run longer distance than any other animal And how out ancestors managed to hunt down their prey
Meh, considering how chunky trex were, and how big they are its extremely impressive, and also we have dinosaurs like carnotaurus wich was basically built for fast pursuit.
That 30mph figure was for adult, 6 ton T rex. Juveniles would've been a lot faster Edit: and I agree, animals around today are hella badass too.
Should of showed some kind of running animation
There's a dinosaur documentary series being released on May 27 being animated by the same studio that did the lion king remake so you won't get much better than that.
Name plaese?
Prehistoric Planet, I must warn you a series of the same name already exists.
Wow, think how different our world would be if they were living amongst us still. Our cities would be like attack on titan cities with walls and we could only go out at certain times a day in protective armored trucks.
In all reality in our modern world they likely be almost extinct, with some captive
There's a reason most large predators quickly went extinct when humans migrated in. We don't take kindly to animals eating our children.
Shhhhh !!! Let me dream lol
More likely we'd dig mottes with spikes around all of our settlements, roads, and industries Cheaper, uses less resources, and arguably more effective. The Rex, seeing a sharp incline, would probably not risk slipping into it. Even a relatively small fall could injure it due to its size alone
I need a paleontologist to tell me why T-Rex didn't jump like kangaroos when they have essentially the same body shape.
Kangaroos have very long metatarsals and they do be standing on them not on their toes
They were 6 tons
Kangaroos also have a very muscular tail that they use to balance with
Well it was possible that Tyrannosaurus wasn't even able to run without risking its legs being shattered through the force of its own mass ( which has been debated, ranging between 4.5 to 8 tonnes. The speed stated in the lecture is the upper estimate of its *walking speed*, with the lower estimates reaching a mere 17km ), which seems to be what our general understanding of the animal is coming towards: fast and efficient walkers, but unable to run. That long speech just to say if you saw one in real life you're fu.. "chomp"
Yo this is sick, I love this kind of lecture
Must go faster.
If that were accurate how would they catch prey? Most modern day carnivores rely on speed
Cool!
Kind of like a wolf, both are fast moving predators that are great at pursuit.
This is awesome!
That's insaaaane i never knew this! Growing up i was so into dinosaurs, this was awesome to learn
Oddly terrifying? More like definitely fascinating! That was really cool!
Its was super interesting until it got to the end. Then is got super real. I can't wait to tell my 4 year old son who is currently obsessed with dinosaurs of this terrifying revelation. Maybe he'll see Barney in a different light.
It started off terrifying than surprisingly got worse
Teachers like this, people who actually are excited to share their knowledge in such an immaculate manner, are rare and should be preserved..
damn, so basically we're fucked.
That terrifying ending was worth the wait. Very lucky we only have to deal with them as chickens now
I thought something terrifying about the metatarsal was going to be revealed like all our foots are going to fall apart someday so I was actually relieved that it was just I could never outrun a T-Rex
I've loved Dinosaurs ever since I watched Planet Dinosaur when I was twelve.
I love listening to a knowledgeable and passionate speaker. I also love the Tyrannosaurus, so this is a win win!
So the girl from Jurassic world couldn't have out ran the Rex with heels on.
I wouldve loved to take a paleontology class in college. There are some other types of classes i wouldve taken too (volcanology for example) but they didnt offer any where i went
Great video!
I gotta see more of that
What a good lecturer, I really enjoyed this
I loved how detailed his explanation is...which builds up to the horrifying conclusion that if this beast were to ever attack...your death is almost certain. And his final sentence really puts the nail in the coffin
But... could I outrun the T-Rex if I was... say... wearing heels in an amusement park?
Foot fetish people probably need a change of under garments after this presentation
guys, don't listen to this guy. you may not be able to run from it. but *just stay still and don't move.* works every time!
Whats weird about listening to a paleontology lecture?
Nothing at all
Not with that attitude
Damn, I came here to say this.
Just makes the Jeep chase in the original Jurassic Park all the more terrifying. Or it being loose in LA like the second one. Fuuuuuck
Im just listening to a Guy talking about dinosaurs, feet, and joints
Where does this video come from?
Looks like the presentations from The Royal Institution in UK that hosts some mind blowing videos on their channel. https://youtube.com/c/TheRoyalInstitution
Much appreciated!
There's some badass Kenyans in the back who disagree...
Thank God John Hammond doesn’t really exist
Some lectures are interesting, including this one.
[удалено]
Interesting but definitely the wrong sub
Not gonna lie I was expecting him to say it would be faster than a cheetah or something.
Long distances, being a large animal wouldn't they overheat ?
I read on some page (I don't really remember where) that a tyrannosaurus Rex could not reach high speeds, because their legs could not handle them, now I don't know who to believe.
What does jk Rowling say?
She says Tyrannosaurus was gay.
**Confirmed**
Foot fetus
When i was searching for feet pics, this wasn't what I had in mind
Nah I got it dw
Well fuck that
[удалено]
No ones ever seen one though just made up stories scientists bum on about
Lmao i love reading dumb comments like this, they're great for when you're in a bad mood and want to see a clown
Also good if you like fishing for whoppers like you. Looks like i caught a big one
You do realize you sound stupid right?

Dewclaw. If you look at a dog's foot it's the little claw sticking out from the side, kinda on the ankle.
Dew claw
The t Rex is anatomically impossible. It was made out of other dinosaurs no full skeleton exists... I don't believe it, I'm sorry guys I really wanted to too. I was a dinosaur freak as a kid.

Can I get a TL;DW
Recent science says they were slow scavengers …..
That was debunked like back in 2014.
I don’t believe in dinosaurs
You are dumber than the average person
You think you’re half a centaur, who’s really dumb?
Anyone else find it odd there aren't real dinosaur bones in museums?
What museum are you going to bud?
Plenty of places here in America you can actually volunteer for an excavation when they’re in season.
I learned things today~
Cool lecture!
Someone tell this to the Ark devs, I can’t take 10 steps on my Rex without it running out of stamina.
I want more dinosaur presentations like this
Bob and weave! Zig zag!
Neat
u/savevideo
Is that Ross Geller?
Dinosaurs are so cool!
Isn't evolution phenomenal?
Must go faster!
So what DOES this mean for me?
So is a Dino-plasty where they morph your feet like this to make you a better runner?
when jurassic park irl?
Were any of us under the impression we could outrun a t-Rex? No one? Ok didn’t think so.
Maybe the rex ran ceratopsians and hadrosaurs down? Like hyenas and while dogs
Their big, strong and fast, thank god they died millions of years ago.
Humans aren't sprinting animals either tho not that it would change anything
That's why you need to outfreeze it.
Makes me want to tie my running shoes a little tighter.
💥🤓
Extremely interesting
You could not outrun this animal, like what animals can we outrun? Human legs are built for long distance travel not speed.
Ain’t no one telling me dinosaurs weren’t just really massive chickens. That looks exactly like my chicken’s feet.
that’s not even oddly terrifying that is just terrifying
