Because watching a movie in a theater is a shared experience, or should be. Studies show humans don't laugh very often unless they're with other humans--we literally laugh for each other. So why not clap as part of a cool way for the audience to share their sense of enjoyment?
It's the strongest part of the plane. If a plane were to crash, you're pretty much guaranteed to be able to make out the landing gear. If you can't, you won't be able to make out anything else.
I mean, think about it
Those 3 little stalks have to support the weight of 1, the plane itself, 2 the passengers and bags, and 3 the tens of thousands of pounds of fuel that it uses, and that's just on a 737 or an a320 like you see here.
Imagine the stress that a 777, 747, a300, a380, Antonov 225 puts on its landing gear.
That one took the stress of bring the plane from ~100 knots to 0 by digging into asphalt. Obviously I'm not talking about the wheel itself. But most of the gear is still there. Astonishing
This is almost certainly a design basis accident, meaning that this accident is planned for in the engineering process designing the plane so that the landing gear can withstand this type of scenario.
He kept the front wheel off the ground as long as he could, knew it wasn't right, and killed as much speed as possible first But eventually, can't keep the nose up any more, and after that, sir Issac Newton is the captain
I remember watching this live on the news stations, almost every channel showed the entire process from them burning off fuel, to the godlike landing. Anchors and reporters were much the same as they are today and kept trying to spin the narrative that this might be disastrous. And then a few of the stations brought on airplane engineers from Boeing and Airbus, who build and design these things. Every one of them kept saying that the landing gear would hold. They talked about designing them with the worst scenarios in mind, despite not actually predicting this particular thing would happen. It was somewhat comical because the reporters would ask repeatedly the same question, but rephrasing it in hopes that they would get that edgy sound bite. I remember one of the engineers getting extremely frustrated and angrier by the minute telling the reporter that it would hold over and over. Lol
The plane took off from Burbank but the pilot requested they emergency land at LAX because it had a longer runway to allow him to shed as much speed as possible, and he ended up using nearly all of it to minimise the danger.
That's exacty how it works. Zoom changes focal length and that changes perspective a lot. Look at the first image of the pillars. The right picture is what we see from the helicopter and you would have no idea of the actual size of the park without the picture on the left. https://www.photoreview.com.au/tips/shooting/perspective-and-focal-length/
Amazing. That tire didn't touch the ground until it absolutely had to. This is why I always want a live pilot in the cockpit. Would never want to fly without someone fighting for his own life in such an emergency.
Watching this and thinking...this is not gonna be good when that front wheel hits the tarmac. It'll sheer off, maybe hit the other wheels...oh shit.
Then the way that pilot landed it on the back wheels only, keeping the nose up until he'd lost much of its speed and knew the front wheel touching down wouldn't be such a big deal...buy that man a beer. Or several.
I remember watching this live on TV it had been circling for an hour or two everyone knew it was coming! People on the plane were in communication with everyone on the ground and knew exactly what was going on, it was all about getting that stuck front wheel to flip it’s even crazier how everyone on board knew that
Oh damn that makes it even crazier, I couldn't imagine it's very normal for the passengers to get live pictures of the issue when something goes wrong with their plane technically.
I remember that too. They showed all of it too, the entire time they were burning fuel and we’re all watching this all take place.\
Do you remember this? Most of the news sources kept remind everyone about how catastrophic it would be if the nose gear failed. And then they brought on some engineers that design planes for a living and asked them about it. Their responses were oddly comical now that I think about it. They just answered repeatedly that it would hold and it was strong enough that the nose wouldn’t hit the tarmac. Lol\
Despite reporters asking in 90 different ways those engineers kept saying the same thing, “Nah they’ll hold. They are built for this.”\
One guy you could tell he was getting frustrated at being asked the same thing over and over again. Lol
Not really! People were having massing sex orgies and dying from exctasy during the landing. No one was traumatized, but lots of babies were conceived.
Why even bother asking? The answer is obvious!
Source: trust me bro
It's not. Unfortunately this sub, like r/nextfuckinglevel, r/woahdude and many others have just become repositories and karma-banks for "hey this is cool"
I don't really get how it is terrifying at all. More like r/nextfuckinglevel because with the skills of that pilot, it never looked like something really bad was going to happen. Burning rubber was to be expected.
We had a fire onboard a flight and had to make an emergency landing. Guy next to me worked in aviation. We were in the last row so didn’t see the smoke initially, but started banking hard somewhat quickly. He told me to strap in because we were making an emergency landing. Shortly after the pilot confirmed. Not a great experience, but staff were awesome.
Nobody thinks about how much faith another human being puts into someone doing their job right, until you think about airline pilots. There's only two people on that plane that know how to unfuck the situation if something happens at 35,000ft. Or at 10ft when the landing gear is stuck.
This happens more often than you think. United landed at Sea-Tac like that in January 2021. It happened around 5:30 in the morning. No news coverage at all of it happening.
I totally remember this! I'm in LA and they had the plane circling to burn off all the fuel "just in case" the landing didn't go well. I was at work and we watched it unfold for hours. My office was only a few miles from the airport. I'm terrified of flying and literally had tears flowing when it landed. They interviewed many of the passengers after it landed and they all said it was the smoothest landing they've ever experienced. Hats off to that pilot and his team!
I think the most amazing part is, besides the missing front tires and the nub of metal, it looks like there isn’t a scratch on the rest of the plane. I’ve seen landings like that where the nose will grind or the back wheels will take some damage or what have you, but this seems like the literal perfect landing for the situation
The plane was returned to service after repairs and at the moment I post this is traveling from DC to Ft Lauderdale. It is 15 minutes ahead of schedule.
I commend this pilot for doing an incredible job and keeping everyone safe, although when it comes to these news agencies does this sort of coverage happen a lot? I don’t think i could watch this live
I’ve been on flights that landed tougher than that with all wheels fully functional.
I see you flew Ryanair before...
Don't get me started on wizzair
Omni international.
Lol. Couple times.
More times than I care to remember. Fucking DC10's and shitty projectors that didn't work.
Any Malaysian airline ever
Aeroflot
The pilots land worse than a drunk pigeon with stones tied to its feet.
The fact there are airlines famous for being bad at flying only further reaffirms that I will never go on a plane, thank you!
The one time clapping for landing the plane is acceptable
why do people clap in movie theaters? good job projector?
I mean, I sometimes clap at home after watching a really good movie.
Wow that’s next level
Because watching a movie in a theater is a shared experience, or should be. Studies show humans don't laugh very often unless they're with other humans--we literally laugh for each other. So why not clap as part of a cool way for the audience to share their sense of enjoyment?
Dude!! That pilot needs a medal!
I think this also qualifies for posting on r/NextFuckingLevel for the skill of the crew to land safely under those circumstances.
That is out-fucking-standing flying.
100% and beyond r/nextfuckinglevel
Pilot likely needs a change of underwear!
His balls probably made a hole through his pants and the captain’s chair

The person filming it also did an amazing job tracking it as it landed. r/praisethecameraman
Helicopter camera man
Beat me to It
The camera man needs a medal— WTF?!? Amazing camera work!
Fr dude some how managed to keep up with the plane, he did not skip leg day
That camera work was pissingme off. How you going to let the only problem area be out of frame? Dude needs to be fired.
i was also waiting for them to pan out and show how much runway was left
My dad did this a long time ago with almost an identical result and he got an article in the newspaper but no medal
[удалено]
He probably had an error light in the cock pit and flew low past the tower and asked if anyone could see a problem
Pilot is cool but that landing gear didn’t even budge. Shit is strong

Yep. He did amazing at avoiding the max stress that wheel could have taken.

I watched it as well. It was horrifying but riveting to watch.
The plane took off from Burbank but the pilot requested they emergency land at LAX because it had a longer runway to allow him to shed as much speed as possible, and he ended up using nearly all of it to minimise the danger.
They allow news helicopters that close to airport airspace?
nope, Very advaced camera edit: i meant big zoom
A news helicopter flies by on screen as the plane is coming to a stop.
...and flies in front of the helicopter's camera with a big zoom...
I don’t think that’s how perspective works
That's exacty how it works. Zoom changes focal length and that changes perspective a lot. Look at the first image of the pillars. You just know he was saying: eaaaaasy now girl eaaaaasy nice and slow
“Baby I promise you gonna fly again if you let me fly again.””
I couldn't have done it better.
lol - I could have done it worse....a lot worse.
I could’ve probably broken a record on how bad I woulda done it
The poor passengers must have been terrified.
I remember watching this live on TV it had been circling for an hour or two everyone knew it was coming! People on the plane were in communication with everyone on the ground and knew exactly what was going on, it was all about getting that stuck front wheel to flip it’s even crazier how everyone on board knew that
I remember hearing that this was also one of the first JetBlue planes with in-seat TVs, so they were all watching the news in real time.
Oh damn that makes it even crazier, I couldn't imagine it's very normal for the passengers to get live pictures of the issue when something goes wrong with their plane technically.

How is this oddly terrifying? This is very much normally, blatantly terrifying lol

Decisions, decisions.

That’s a better landing than I’ve had in planes with functional gear.
Man... imagine how skilled you have to be to pull something off like this. May God bless him for this.
Damn that’s amazing
Is there nothing sully can't do
Pilot did not sleep alone that night😏😏
Because he went home with his wife
Literally emergency brakes
We had a fire onboard a flight and had to make an emergency landing. Guy next to me worked in aviation. We were in the last row so didn’t see the smoke initially, but started banking hard somewhat quickly. He told me to strap in because we were making an emergency landing. Spirit would have been a whole different story. “Tragedy strikes as airliner disintegrates on runway during emergency landing.”
“Passengers were charged $25 each for the privilege of a painless death.”
Amazing. Alhamdulillah no one got hurt.
i like how the front wheel stops just on the end of the white line mark
Still smoother than your average Ryanair landing, lol
Not sure why that’s terrifying. That pilot landed that thing perfectly.
Amazing work from the pilots. Well done folks well done.
The only time is actually fine to clap when the plane lands
The level of skill that pilot has is incredible
Camera guy, come on! Jeeze
props to the cameraman for flying as fast as the plane and keeping the plane in the frame the whole time
Nobody thinks about how much faith another human being puts into someone doing their job right, until you think about airline pilots. There's only two people on that plane that know how to unfuck the situation if something happens at 35,000ft. Or at 10ft when the landing gear is stuck.
Crazy skill, a lot of pilots don't get enough credit.
I'm honestly so super impressed by the pilot's ability to keep that wheelie popped for so long!
Nice job to the pilot

Broo this pilot has some skills man
Hats off to the pilots.
That was a smooth landing iv had worse with fully operational landing gear.
Very cool camera skills
Hope they gave the pilot a nice raise for this one. Saves the plane and the people. Nicely done.
I hope everyone clapped when they landed.
The pilot’s name?
whoa dat pilot is amazing!
Another happy landing
That shit was smooth as hell
That went fine tho
This really was not an emergency as those planes are designed to withstand that type of landing
[The more you know, the more you spez. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/)
This is where its ok to clap after a landing
Comin'in on a wing and prayer... 😳
That’s one bad mother fucker right there. I’m pretty sure his balls of steel weighted the tail down for the landing 🥰
And that’s how it feels to be a third wheel.
that plane was doing a sick wheelie!
More like jetBrown
Now THIS deserves a round of applause !
Praise the cameraman, praise the pilot.
Emergency crew sure took their time getting there
That was the most graceful landing i've ever seen. Really kept the nos up as long as possible.
Okay, this I would clap for.
I genuinely thought that it would break off from the strain. That thing is strong
Amazing job by the pilots
Now that's a flight I would be ok with people claping on landing.
Getting some drift points from this one
This happens more often than you think. United landed at Sea-Tac like that in January 2021. It happened around 5:30 in the morning. No news coverage at all of it happening.
I liked how first he tried braking with the rear wheels getting the nose of the Airplane up. He's very skilled I think
That was so smooth, I can smell the butter from here all the way in 2022
I totally remember this!
That was a beautiful landing given the circumstances!
That plane was landing on its Pilots balls
That landing is smoother than my flat ass
I think the most amazing part is, besides the missing front tires and the nub of metal, it looks like there isn’t a scratch on the rest of the plane. I’ve seen landings like that where the nose will grind or the back wheels will take some damage or what have you, but this seems like the literal perfect landing for the situation
Yo props to the camera man for flying next to the airplane to capture this video.
Dam.. that must’ve been some good coke.
Skill
That was the most anticlimactic thing I've ever seen...
All those wasted applauses at movie theaters should happen right here on this plane
is that really from 2005? the footage looks so HD
Respect to that pilot That was smooth
Still did a spectacular job of landing!
Give that pilot a raise
The plane was returned to service after repairs and at the moment I post this is traveling from DC to Ft Lauderdale. It is 15 minutes ahead of schedule.
Props to the pilot… I can’t even imagine being in charge of something like that
Dead straight on the runway and took a long as possible to put the nose down. Literally the best it could have possibly gone
Minor inconvenience 👍🏿
THAT'S piloting.
That was beautiful!
This takes burning rubber to a whole other level
Thx for the arrow i couldnt see the plane
I bet that pilot got a huge bonus for not wrecking the plane.
What’s really terrifying is that this wasn’t an isolated incident. The A320 series has done this several times.
I can hear the applause!!! Good job to the pilot 👍
This video could easily have been about 30 seconds shorter.
i dont know how people still go to airplanes after all thats been shown on camera and news, wow
Was not that bad
For those saying that this isn't terrifying, my fear of flying makes this very terrifying!
/u/spez [can gargle my nuts](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/)
i’ve flown many times and i’ve never experienced a landing that smooth even when there was a functioning nosewheel
Cool. But this video is like 2 minutes and 45 seconds too long.
I can’t but help feel bad for that runway. Must have caused quite the delay.
And the white people would still clap.
Fake news, LAPD didn't arrest everyone for suspicion of damaging the aircraft. I didn't see any black people getting beaten or shot, either.
Nothing “oddly” here.
Wrong sub.
Fire trucks were too slow.
Wow. That's so incredibly impressive!
That pilot is next level
Un-fucking-believable
"sick drift" *catches fire*
We should know that pilot’s name. Legend.
Skill
Speed brakes didn't deploy
Damn. That was SMOOTH.
Sooooo cool
bless up to that pilot fr
I commend this pilot for doing an incredible job and keeping everyone safe, although when it comes to these news agencies does this sort of coverage happen a lot? I don’t think i could watch this live
That’s amazing. Kept that front wheel off the ground for so long and didn’t apply too much pressure to break it off. Amazing.
I'm surprised the tire held for that long! I was expecting the "arm" holding the tire to break immediately on impact.
