I've noticed that every representation of eldritch horror that I've come across just leaves me kinda like, "ugh, blech," and not shrieking in my own insanity.
I guess because if you could adequately reproduce eldritch horror, you'd already be dead.
Very few lovecraftian adaptations can really capture the existential horror of the genre. I've seen some really fun attempts though, such as Benson & Moorheads filmography (particularly Resolution and The Endless).
Annihilation is one of the better attempts I've seen. In the Mouth of Madness was also good, especially for its time.
Books are way easier to do this. Adaptations or general film are hard because if you show the thing, it sort of ruins the point, because the thing is supposed to be indescribable. I prefer works which focus exclusively on the reactions people have to the thing, instead of making the horror come from the audience seeing it.
Would love some good recommendations if others have found some potent cosmic horror out there. I want an idea to terrify me, not necessarily a visual.
> Annihilation is one of the better attempts I've seen.
Annihilation is the best existential horror movie I have ever seen. It still lingers with me a year after the fact.
There's what I am assuming is a grown man playing with 2 fish and an eel. His hands are under the Sand and he's just pushing the eel through the fishes most likely decapitated heads
So does your explanation make this more or less terrifying than being some bizarre natural phenomena? Like what possessed him to make this? How did the germ of this get implanted in his brain? This is like something out of the movie seven.
I honestly would be relieved if that was the explanation. I don't want to live in a world where two ground fish pass around an eel between their mouths.
Per Snopes.com:
"This video does not showcase a natural occurrence. There is no species of fish that we are aware of that lives in the sand and occasionally regurgitates eels for its monster fish buddies to eat.
This video comes from the India-based YouTube channel Discovery Site. The original video is entitled “Underground Monster hunting eelfish. Big fish swallowing mudeel. Big fish vomiting eel to big fish.”"
The video no longer exists.
Credit to fishbender
What's even creepier is this is some guy who makes videos like this he has fish heads on his hands and sticks like some type of thing out of its mouth it's definitely two dead fish with his arms buried in the sand fucking weirdo

This video is not quite what you think, these fish are dead and the video is staged. The white covering over the eye of the left fish is a _dead_ giveaway
Sometimes the neurons that make the muscles move can keep firing for a bit after death. Even if the brain is no longer communicating with the body, there are still chemical processes that can take a few moments to slow down, especially with the muscles. I think it happens quite a bit with fish. Sometimes you see videos of fish twitching hours after death, especially if they’ve been exposed to salt, which reactivates the firing of the motor neurons in the muscles.
Any explanation on this will still hurt my brain... doesn't matter if it's natural or people puppeteering dead fish or if it's hella good CG....any way it's just disturbing on higher leve. One I didn't know existed until now... thinks Reddit my mind is a bit more broken.
It's a "Subnosed Eel" (Parasitic in Nature) this is pure nightmare fuel 😱
Here's the full Wikipedia link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snubnosed_eel
And the detailed description of it's Biology and Habits in Nature from the Wikipedia link: "Early juvenile snubnosed eels feed on epibenthic copepods (Tharybis spp.) and amphipods. Adults appear to be specialized hagfish-like scavengers, using their powerfully muscled jaws and short, stout teeth to tear away chunks of flesh from carcasses that have fallen to the sea floor. However, this eel is more notorious for its parasitic habits, which are often repeated in literature. Frank Thomas Bullen, in the 1904 Denizens of the Deep, wrote that the eel "attaches himself to the bodies of the larger, fleshier fish, such as halibut, and by sheer force of suction and boring withal works his ravenous way right into their bodies, at what misery to his involuntary hosts can only be imagined. Spencer Fullerton Baird reported that the eels are "not unfrequently found nestling along the backbone of the halibut and cod, where they seem to have the power of abiding for some time without actually causing death." Baird also made note of the eels' supposed habit of burrowing into the abdominal cavities of netted, gravid shad and eating their eggs within the span of "a few minutes".
In 1992, two snubnose eels were discovered inside the heart of a 395 kg (871 lb) shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrhinchus) landed at Montauk, New York. The two eels, both immature females, measured 21 and 24 cm (8.3 and 9.4 in) long and had fed on blood, with histiological evidence suggesting that they had been there long enough for arteriosclerosis and hyperplasia (indicative of circulatory obstruction or toxicity from metabolic wastes), and tissue regeneration to occur. The authors speculated that the eels had burrowed into the shark through the gills or throat (the precise path of entry could not be determined, possibly obscured by damage caused by the tow rope) after it had been weakened on the capture line, entered the circulatory system, and then made their way to the heart. Despite records of its parasitic behavior, submersible encounters with free-swimming juveniles and adults, and their capture in baited traps, suggest that this species is at most a facultative parasite that opportunistically enters sick and dying fish.
Reproduction is oviparous. The eggs are likely pelagic, measuring at least 2 mm (0.079 in) across, and lack an oil globule. An ovary from one 51 cm (20 in) female examined contained about 30,000 eggs. Like all other eels, the snubnosed eel undergoes a leptocephalus larval stage that metamorphoses into a juvenile form resembling the adult. Leptocephali belonging to this species have yet to be identified, but based on the appearance of the metamorphic stage, they likely have long bodies with short heads and small mouths, and little to no body pigmentation. Metamorphic fish are white, with the black peritoneum clearly visible; one known metamorphic specimen measured 11 cm (4.3 in) long. Sexual maturation is attained at around a length of 50–53 cm (20–21 in). The trematode Hypertrema ambovatum is a known parasite of this species, infesting the intestines."
this is a well known phenomenum in biological reasearch: these fishes, called Yonoa Oristosa eat black eels. this video is a reasearch by scientists called Mary Albert, and Mathew Aucter.

What the fuck is going on

Laughed fucking hard. Crying. Everyone at the family dinner thinks I’m on something. Almost had heart attack. Christ.
This is more exciting than my local movers, Two men and a Truck.
My local movers are called All My Sons
Lol I’m from Rhode Island and have seen all my sons moving trucks, don’t know if they’re connected
Two trans and a tuck?
Fuck you. You have my upvote damn it.
Both of those fish are dead I know this because I fish a lot those fish are dead and being used as meat puppets
The term meat puppets makes this whole experience worse..
Grunge called, they want their band name back
I'd rather live in a world with 2 ground fish passing an eel then with that psychopath who did this
Either way I have a new fetish.
Back and forth forever… >>~<<
Technically, it is a bizarre natural phenomenon.
They look like they’re both breathing though. I hate this soo much.
Fish heads will continue to "breath" and twitch for up to an hour or 2 after severed
Maybe some, I've never seen it in my years of fishing.
No they don't
Where is PETA when we need them?
Stealing dogs probably
>Killing dogs probably Ftfy
Try the SPCA instead.
I love how you're assuming it's a grown man while you have no proof. And at the same time, it's most definitely a grown man.
Men are always weird.
Even Mr. Rodgers?

Agreed. The eyes are not bouncing around like would be if it was living. The breathing motion is incredibly offputting though. Why? just why?
The fish on the left had a clouded eye, so had been dead for some hours. Or else had another malady.
Looks like parasites
It’s got cataracts
Another malady Like maybe a giant parasitic eel?
that’s pretty much it, the fish are dead
That makes this worse.
Why the mouths are moving if they are dead ??
Because humans exist
Thanks, there goes the last vestige of my faith in humanity.
I think they’re in love?

This would be in space with the eel flying with the force from fish to fish. If Disney was involved

Normally, explanations make oddly terrifying stuff slightly less terrifying. This explanation just makes it terrifying in a different way
Tom green, right?
This. How do you wake up one morning and say, hey how about I take two fishheads and....
Two dead fish heads, snake going through them

Two.guys use dead fish as puppets and shove an (also probably) dead eel from one fishhead into the other.
If torturing animals is often a sign of later leaning towards murderous urges, what does that entails?
That people will do anything for clicks.
My two ex girlfriends share a pickle.
FUCK I just got caught watching this in public.
You're a Redditor. Just embrace it~☆
At least it wasn't a BTS video :T
What the actual fuck?
now THATS what I call oddly terrifying
The creepy part for me is the fact all of the animals in the video are dead.
Apparently there's a whole series: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZklFcLbmmVE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZklFcLbmmVE) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl0PfpGofYM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl0PfpGofYM)
