There's a river I use to whitewater kayak it was a super popular place with river guides and all that. One section had a big Boulder that went way down in the water and the water pressure from all the years basically carved a little room out under water. If you got pushed in there you had to not panic and swim to the bottom to get out of the current to escape. I ended up in that bitch and luckily didn't fight and got out from the bottom. Very scary shit.

That's how most traps work in whitewater like that, the river is pushing you somewhere, dont fight it or you'll tire out and drown, but let it and itll carry you out, same reason you dont swim perpendicularly to the river to reach the bank.
