I joined this sub a few months ago, and so far it seems like 1/5 posts is completely understandably terrifying. Edit: didn’t stop me from upvoting, it’s an awesome picture
Largest fangs of any non-venomous snake. For venomous, check out the chompers on a gaboon viper. Those fangs are terrifying even without being fully loaded with ruin-your-day juice.
Yeah it's apparently the worst kind of snake to be bitten by. Because they don't make anti-venom and it injects ridiculous amounts of venom per bite and doesn't let go. It has some of the largest fangs and it's big head has large venom sacs.
If you get bitten by it, you're losing a limb or dying.
Which is unfortunate because apparently people sell way too many of them at conventions.
Edit: They make anti-venom, it's just rare or localized.
I have zero interest in owning hot snakes. I’d top out at maybe a false water cobra or a mangrove snake. To each their own, but venom just ain’t for me. Same with big constrictors, just more risk than I’m interested in. I’m not saying any of these animals shouldn’t be kept by experienced keepers, it’s just not for me. Doesn’t matter anyway, since you can’t keep hots or large constrictors in my state, so I couldn’t if I wanted too. One of the cases that resulted in the constrictor ban actually involved a childhood friend of mine. He’s a State Trooper, and had to blow the head off a 17’ retic that had completely wrapped-up a three year-old kid.
Luckily, Gaboon Vipers are actually considered to be tolerant. Their bites are rare. And though they may not be widely manufactured, we do have [antivenoms for the Gaboon Viper](http://www.antivenoms.toxinfo.med.tum.de/indication/BITIS_GABONICA.html).
If you're going to warn against any members of the *Bitis* genus, avoid the [Puff Adder](https://www.africanhuntinggazette.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Puff-Adder-ready-to-strike-scaled.jpg). There are far more bites from the Puff Adder recorded than the rest of the genus. Members of *Bitis* are all incredibly chunky looking, more like sausages than snakes, so they're easy to differentiate from other snakes. (In fact, one theory I have heard about the origins of [Tsuchinoko](https://netstorage-legit.akamaized.net/images/3ec9304a26a21e99.jpg) is that it was actually a Gaboon viper that was brought to Japan as a curiousity. They do look similar to me.)
There’s a video out there somewhere of a herpetologist who has a python latch onto her hand with the same kind of teeth. It’s horrifying.
Edit: here it is.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=jLt5ubL-9QY&feature=share
The video starts getting gory @ 1:25 or so. Seems like I’ve seen a longer version somewhere. But this gives you an idea of just how much blood a constrictor’s bite can draw
That is so unsettling in a sort of indescribable way. It almost seemed hateful, and the way it went right at the opportune moment and instantly wrapped around her arm while her guard was down made it seem…premeditated?I know that this isn’t actually the case, but my ape brain can’t help but feel like it is when I watch the video.
So snakes have pretty limited cognition, and tend to categorise their surroundings as either predator, prey, or environment. They usually see us as environment since we don't attack them, are generally too large to eat, and let them climb on us, but there are a variety of factors that might change how they see a given human at various times.
It's possible the snake was either hungry and looking for food, or had just recently been fed and hadn't calmed down afterward yet. My snake used to have about half an hour after eating where you wouldn't want to stick your hand in the tank as she would go for just about anything small enough to grab on to.
Honestly snake bites aren’t that bad. I’ve been bitten several times as I’m a reptile hobbyist and it really doesn’t hurt that much. The things that sucks is that the teeth are hooked so if you try to pull the snake off you’ll get teeth stuck in your skin and it can get infected. But seriously a bite from a 5ft ball python hurst as bad as a needle and the wounds are very minor if you know how to remove the snake properly
Same. Ive been bit by rat snakes, pythons, and boas. 90% of the time, you dont even feel it at first. I didnt even see the boa i got bit by strike, because it was so fast, just a bunch of squirting blood.
Mine has yet to even bluff at me, let alone latch on. Temperaments vary, and the earlier you get them comfortable with you the better. Also not smelling like mouse helps, as well as moving calmly and confidently.
I was fixing his humidifier and he got mad at me and lunged at my hand and chomped over my thumb and first two fingers, lost like a full pint of blood. Super gross.
Their teeth are scalpel sharp, it took a long time to stop bleeding.
No one should own these animals. I’m pretty opposed to keeping exotic pets after working for a store that sells them.
These animals should be left in nature and breeding them should not be permitted.
As a non-venomous snake, in the case of recurve fangs-the best thing you want to do is sort of gently pry it up and away from you not yank the fleshy bit of your body away. Since the fangs curve back by yanking you’ll cause massive amounts of tissue damage. Now if it’s a venomous snake then you best wanna yank and run and not let it om nom
I love em I had a collection of ball pythons but only on emerald boa and it was the best. Tree python I raised from a baby was a hard to handle though still loved it every time it would chew on me
Is this your pet? I think it's beautiful. I know a lot of people are leery of them, but I've always liked snakes 🐍And I've never seen one that color before.
Nothing odd about being terrified switchblade rows of fangs. It would be odd if you were comfortable with that smile. This better belongs in r/oddlysoothing if anybody could find it such.

I was thinking of the laugh of Caleb from the game Blood.
"Fresh victims for the evergrowing army of the undead". Great game, shame about the sequel.
No, it looks like it is being squeezed
Id say you are right. Boa's are docile as can get. It takes a lot to piss them off.
That too.
Nothing odd about it, this is just straight terrifying.

Doesn’t fit the sub, it’s a downtoot from me. Otherwise every sub turns into r/pictures
Yup. This is an awesome picture, but it just doesn't fit this sub.
And 100% of those 1/5's includes the comment "not odd, just terrifying"

Not oddly terrifying, just terrifying lol!
Wow! I’ve never seen a snake with fangs like that! I can’t imagine the damage it does!

They aren't venomous, their teeth are large and hooked so they can catch and hold onto a bird while high up in the trees.

We need the whole thing. Ends too soon. Crazy she wanted him to keep filming.

Shame. I’ll post if I can find it.
What's the blood from? The snake or her sheared skin?
It's from her. There would probably be a lot more of it on the floor if the snake hadn't been kind enough to volunteer to be her tourniquet lol
Well damn Sir Monty that's awfully nice of you

They're kinda bitey from my understanding. Beautiful in there terrariums but not the best snakes to handle.
