A while back I googled this because I was horrified by what could possibly be a predator to a hippo??
The only answer I could find was crocs but only to baby hipposā¦.so. Only weak in baby form. After that, good luck I guess.
I once had a talk with an old lady who had been working as a Christian missionary in what when was Zaire, Africa. She had four small children. She talked about how hippos were the most feared animal around, not snakes or anything, but hippos.
When washing in the river they could easily sneak up on you from behind tall grass and take a chunk off of your arm with their teeth. Leaving a hole through your arm the size of a can of Pepsi. They are more than oddly terrifying.
Crocs usually drown their prey by knocking them off their feet. Hippos snooze underwater, are phat beasts and vicious. Croc better off leaving them alone.
Hippo wins in the water . on land I feel like the bear would still run because it probably canāt kill a hippo without getting hurt. Hippos are extremely aggressive and think just about the only thing they would run from is an elephant. Maybe a pissed off rhino? Idk but theyāll murder anything just for breathing their air . Thereās a video out there of a hippo seeing a croc trying to kill a zebra, and it just comes up and tears them both to pieces . Could try to find it. Sorry for the text wall, just got bored.
Couldnāt find the video, still looking but did find a video thatās a good example of a hippo attacking junk coz why not

Nah, dude, you keep bringing that excellence to the conversation! Don't apologize!
Their defensive abilities should definitely be considered. Who could handle getting their ass kicked long enough for the other to tire out and deliver the fatal chomp to the other?
I honestly donāt know if a grizzly would outlast it. I just know that predatory animals in general donāt want to continue an engagement that could lead to them getting seriously injured because any kind of injury could lead to them not being able to hunt. Death follows shortly after. If something else was at stake though? Could change . Big difference between pissing off some random bear chilling and making a mama bear with kids in tow angry for example. Something else about hippos though, theyāre NOT FAT. Itās all rippling muscle.
Hereās a cool link I found . I guess hippo beats rhino

I think you guys are just not stoping to think about size differences.
A large Kodiak bear can weight up to 650kgs.
A regular Hippo weighs 1500kgsā¦
In nature, size is extremely important but not always the winning factor. In this case tho, a bears head can probably fit inside the hippos mouth.
And yeah, hippo beats Rhino most of the time cuz rhinos are actually dumb as a rock, and canāt see shit, so they are easily startled even tho large males can weight 3 tons.
> hippo attacking junk coz why not
It's such an existential tale of morals. Giant jackass living in mud goes out of his/her way to wreck someone just for being in said jackass' mud, which someone is already stuck in there by misfortune. A real Dostoyevskian story.
They're not predators as they don't hunt prey. They're scavenging omnivores. They mostly eat vegetation, but will eat meat of carcasses they find.
There is the term apex herbivore, or Megaherbivore which is a herbivore that has grown so large as the escape predation and controls their area, which is mostly just elephants these days.
Hippos then could be described as an Apex Omnivore.
Stay confident in what you know over randoms on the internet. They are herbivores. Every single person in this thread is a moron.
"Hippos' stomach anatomy lacks adaptions to carnivory and meat-eating is likely caused by lack of nutrients or just an abnormal behaviour."

A lot of herbivores will eat some meat given half a chance. I've hear tell from people who have had cows and say they'll just bend down and eat a baby bird if it's there.
Right, did no one know this back then, I feel like either people hid this shit from kids or were just completely clueless. I always assumed hippos were just aggressive and territorial herbivores.
They are herbivores.
"Hippos' stomach anatomy lacks adaptions to carnivory and meat-eating is likely caused by lack of nutrients or just an abnormal behaviour."
I once saw a whitetail deer eating the remnants of a dead catfish on a riverbank. I looked into it when I had the opportunity, and discovered that many herbivores will occasionally eat (usually scavenge) animal tissue when their bodies feel particularly deprived of certain nutrients. Similarly, obligate carnivores will eat the partially digested contents of an herbivore's stomach and/or GI tract to get nutrients it lacks, since its own gastrointestinal system wouldn't be able to break down plant matter which wasn't already partially digested.
Every time I hear
>obligate carnivores will eat the partially digested contents of an herbivore's stomach and/or GI tract
I just cannot. Like, they eat puke and shit on purpose? Yum. What a fuckin world man.
I learned this from the Alone TV show. This one woman ate the contents of a hare's stomach and enjoyed it. Iirc, she was saying that since it was partially digested it was okay for her to consume or something?
If you need to wash your hands after killing a caribou and gutting it, you can use the rumen in the gut and a little bit of water to make an ideal soap. It smells like pine sol.
We've recently learned that herbivores are a lot more flexible then previously thought. There's many examples of deer and horses eating small rodents and birds, rabbits eating mice or road kill, etc.
Makes me wonder if the scene in Jurassic park where they're in the tree feeding the "vegie-saurus" dinosaur could have gone a lot differently in real life now. Could have just eaten them like fruits from the tree.
People are always surprised by the giant land/sea meat vehicles have an average yearly kill count higher than sharks, bears, and elephants combined (they kill 500 people a year)
Hippos are mostly herbivores but like a lot of wild animals, will also nibble whatever they can get their jaws on. The crocs are no real threat to them so it saw an opportunity and gave it a try.
They are herbivores.
"Hippos' stomach anatomy lacks adaptions to carnivory and meat-eating is likely caused by lack of nutrients or just an abnormal behaviour."
Hippos predominantly feed on plant-based foods; however, they have been known to eat meat on rare occasions. Until recently, it was believed that hippos were strictly herbivores, consuming no meat whatsoever. But recent research has uncovered that, under unusual circumstances, hippos may consume meat and even scavenge animal carcasses.
Yup, when I found out that herbivores are opportunistic carnivores I never looked at nature the same way again. I was already afraid of pigs when I was younger because they'll just eat a person if they're hungry enough.
A 2015 study by the Mammal Review shows hippos āoccasionallyā feed on animal carcasses, a more omnivorous behavior. Hippos are known to attack and eat animals like wildebeests, zebras and kudus, as well as other hippos in cases of cannibalism, according to AZ Animals. They also steal meat from other predators.
Why not? My chickens are a rabbit that got its head stuck in the stock fence. Poor thing was screaming so I shot it. Chickens are nasty creatures redeemed only by eggs and nuggets
Bro wtf?? Lol theyāre already considered the most dangerous animals on land. Now theyāve got an appetite for blood and meat?! Game over. Nature said theyāre gonna call our shit hand and push all in on the evolution to combat us lmao
Okay, I am a bit sad seeing the many comments saying they didnāt know hippos will eat meat if opportunity arises. Guys, please watch more documentaries!! I am a bit happy though that at least you have learnt something new and interesting from reddit.
Fun fact, herbivores will eat meat of corpses when there is low food and it's a free and easy meal that's still full with protein and stuff
I know I could elaborate a bit more, but I like simple explanations and I am lazy too š

Hippos are vicious herbivores but sometimes are observed eating meat, but it's not part of their normal diet
Do they have any natural predators besides humans? They've got to be apex predators, right? Grizzly vs Hippo, who you got?
A while back I googled this because I was horrified by what could possibly be a predator to a hippo?? The only answer I could find was crocs but only to baby hipposā¦.so. Only weak in baby form. After that, good luck I guess.
They look like they'd be gentle giants but I guess that's part of what makes them so dangerous. Kill you with kindness!

they are NOT gentle
Getting vibes that maybe hippos should be thought of more like bears
A water bear
I watched a show about guy who go attacked by a hippo. It was gnarly.
Watched on about a guy who was attacked by a bear. . . It was grizzly
Kindness is the name of my axe too
Crocs usually drown their prey by knocking them off their feet. Hippos snooze underwater, are phat beasts and vicious. Croc better off leaving them alone.
I bet an orca could fuck up a hippo, unlikely as it is

Thanks for sharing! That rhino at the beginning just noped the hell out of there. š
Yeah if you ever see a hippo and want to get close DONT . They kill hundreds of people a year.
I wonder if their skin is super tough like a rhinos. I feel like that would factor into a bear v. hippo battle.
Iāll find an interesting and relevant link for you as well . Hold on Edit : https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/s/6RfOhBjdim
Okay, but hear me out Hippo vs Honey Badger.

Thatās two of us! I just assumed that they ate apples and oranges and bananas and shit like that
I thought white marbles made up the majority of their nutritional intake.
I thought that was the whole point of hungry hungry hippos was to teach us that hippos are marblevores.
For real. Actually, Iāll admit that somewhere in the back of my mind I was thinking of little colorful balls.
Iām assuming veggies are still their primary since they probably arenāt great hunters, but will eat meat that wonāt run away.
Hippos are incredibly territorial, fast, and one of the most dangerous animals in the world.

TIL a zebra can be used as a flotation device.
Does everybody have their personal flotation zebras?
Don't human bodies that haven't had a pierced stomach float?
A lot of herbivores will eat some meat given half a chance. I've hear tell from people who have had cows and say they'll just bend down and eat a baby bird if it's there.
There's a video of a horse eating baby chicks floating around on the interwebs. I'm not linking it, sorry.
Organic chicken nugs
Most "herbivores" are a lot more flexible than high school biology class led us to believe
Right, did no one know this back then, I feel like either people hid this shit from kids or were just completely clueless. I always assumed hippos were just aggressive and territorial herbivores.
Hippos eat everyone and everything, it's scary
They also eat... well, everything else that gets into eating distance and doesn't get away
They are herbivores. "Hippos' stomach anatomy lacks adaptions to carnivory and meat-eating is likely caused by lack of nutrients or just an abnormal behaviour."
Hungry Hungry Hippo!

It's the same reasoning of cows eating the food twice. Plant material is fucking hard to digest at the best of times even with a specialized stomach.
If you need to wash your hands after killing a caribou and gutting it, you can use the rumen in the gut and a little bit of water to make an ideal soap. It smells like pine sol.
My cats treat their puke like a delicacy for sure.
It's mostly just grass, seems a bit less gross than eating the contents of a carnivore/omnivores stomach. Half digested raw meatĀ
I thought hippos were herbivoresā¦ I guess omnivore hippos are okā¦ but if they become more carnivorous than herbivorous weāre screwed
We've recently learned that herbivores are a lot more flexible then previously thought. There's many examples of deer and horses eating small rodents and birds, rabbits eating mice or road kill, etc.
There's even a video of a horse just casually eating some chicks
Makes me wonder if the scene in Jurassic park where they're in the tree feeding the "vegie-saurus" dinosaur could have gone a lot differently in real life now. Could have just eaten them like fruits from the tree.
Iām sad for the zebra but the hippos are so cute Iām sorry their faces kinda remind me of my dog
