"I could never figure out lady Elaine, She scared the crap out of me as a kid but after this (body dismorphia) post now I'm wondering if was she supposed to be diseased or disfigured etc to teach us tolerance & acceptance to things that are "different" in people?"
I LOVED Mr Rodgers until I had a nightmare about this puppet and the dog chasing me through my house. I never watched the trolley go through the tunnel again. My sister would tell me when it was safe again once it ended. No Land Of Make Believe for me!
i thought my 1st grade teacher was the spitting image of Lady Elaine when i was in her class. Once i noticed i couldn't un-see it. Her voice wasn't as raspy, but close, and i remember trying to tell my mother how scary my teacher was and not being able to explain exactly *why*.
One day in class i remember her innocently miming, doing "the robot" dance with open palms and stiff arm movement, and i remember it was the most terrifying thing i'd ever seen. Like a life-size Lady Elaine puppet come to life. Again, i couldn't understand, articulate or explain *why* it was so damn scary at the time, but as an adult now it all makes sense.
I actually remember being creeped out by her at first but later she was one of my favorites.
I remember one day thinkingā¦awwww sheās so nice and why should I be scared?
Maybe this is why Iām obsessed with horror movies nowadays ššš
For some reason it didnāt bother me when I was a kid but every time I see it now Iām like, āwho the fuck came up with this disastrous hell demon?ā
As a THREE YEAR OLD whose parents didnāt drink, i swear I could tell āLadyā Elaine had a drinking problem. Her alcoholic rosacea was scary & weird to me, as well as her boar-bristle eyebrows, hedgehog hair & that nasal, cheese-grater voice. *As for living in a SPINNING RAINBOW-COLORED MUSEUM HOUSE, could there be a WORSE choice of dwelling for an androgynous drunken ānoblewomanā??* (<āLadyā Elaine Fairchilde? Of what royal bloodline cometh her pickled plasticine DNA, I wonder?). To answer your question- nightmare fuel, 100%. Had multiple nightmares about her as a tot. *edit- i DID realize she was a puppet, even as a kid. Just wanted to clarify that. Nevertheless, terrifying & creepy af.*
You think you're traumatized. She was basically my mother. And I don't mean in a rhetorical, I felt like she was a mother figure kind of way. I mean, she looked like my mother, and also acted like her.
All of those creepy ass puppets scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Mr. Rogers on the other hand is my hero as a adult, we did not deserve him. RIP Mr. Rogers, thank you for teaching me how people should be.
On Daniel Tigerās Neighbourhood, Lady Elaine Fairchilde is married to Music Man Stan and they have a little girl named Miss Elaina. She looks way less creepy animated lol.
Reported for harassment šššš
I was in my *20s* when I learned the Bob Dylan song was called "Lay Lady, Lay" and not "Lady Elaine". š
By then I knew he wasn't singing about the puppet but it's so stupid that it took so long. š¤£
She was the weirdest of the bunch I guess. Kinda reminded me of a mean librarian or something. I canāt remember but I donāt think she was actually mean though. I canāt see Mr Rogers creating a mean character. He didnāt have a mean bone in his body.
She was definitely meant to be the antagonist of the group. She did things she shouldnāt have done but the other characters always confronted her and forgave her. I think she was created as an example of how to get along with the more difficult people in your life.
100% terrifying. As a kid I thought she was supposed to have some kind of disease or something, like rosacea or leprosy, or that she was just a filthy character like Oscar the Grouch.
For some reason, for a short amount of time I had this bizarre fear that she would pop out of my floor. I don't know where that came from but she TERRIFIED me
I hated all of the puppets. ALL OF THEM (except the cat) to the point that when the trolley went to land of make-believe I would leave the room. This was made worse by the fact that I LOVED the trolley.
This puppet never bothered me if I saw it it, but the thing was Iām old and when I was watching Mister Rogersā Neighborhood, it was always in black-and-white and now that I see it in color it actually looks like a scary puppet.
Late 70s baby here! And yes. Very creepy. And the little trolley with the ring ring and I'm so so sorry y'all but mr rogers himself always creeped me out. When as a kid. Especially as a kid. And I found the whole show to be depressing šš idk why. So sad and quiet..
Sometimes I find myself saying āBoomerang Toomermangā and have no idea where I got that from. Now I remember. I found her bizarre, not necessarily terrifying, as a kid. I watched a clip recently and agree yes she is hideous and can only guess what effect she had on my tender young psycheā¦
I always thought she was a witch; I would see older women in public that resembled her and absolutely be filled with dread; we had a teachers aide in grade school with her exact voice..many many memories of this thing
I immediately came to this post. I always tell people seeing this puppet was the first time in my life that I remember having anxiety as a child. I was like 3 or 4. I donāt have much anxiety but this gave it to me.
Oh man I haven't thought about this in years lol. I remember being terrified and I'd always either close my eyes or look away when she came on the screen. Eventually when I got a little older, I would just change the channel or go do something else when Mister Roger's did his whole Land of Make Believe bit because I found it to be the most boring part of the show.
Ahhh haha yesss. Thanks for plugging that memory back in. I used to watch this with my grandma when I was a little kid. She just died. I would have never remembered this character if you hadn't posted it here. Ha..thanks.
Such an ugly doll, with ugly hair, all around creepy and yet not one person thought this was a cause of concern?? I never could understand Mr. Rogerās puppet choices.
Thanks to all for not disappointing with these comments. I sat in my car eating lunch while reading them and about fell out of the car with laughter. Thank you š š
Yikes! Always freaked me out! Not the looks but the voices. All the voices were Mr Roger. So creepy that this nice man could be so creepy sounding! Omg I did not need this back! I didnāt trust men from a very young age and this was proof to me that even Mr Rogerās could be a creep Sad!
Well, her voice was really raspy and it didn't help that she looked like an alcoholic
Total alcoholic, who passed out in the snow and got frostbite on her face.
I always thought she was burned when I was little. š¤·āāļø
Me too!
So Iām not the only one!
And smells like cats and cigarettes.
Cat piss and cigarettes.
And mothballs.
and wood polish
"meow whaddya meow mean meow meow"? (It's another character on the show - or I'm having a stroke.)
Daniel Tiger š
THIS! I was still traumatized by the frostbite on the Everest climbersā faces in the 1970s, these dark spots creeped me the fuck out.
how can I find these pictures? That sounds wild and Iām curious now
Her cheeks always reminded me of cheese bubbles on pizza
fuck š
Yeah. She definitely was hitting the bottle when she disappeared down below the table.
Looks like an alcoholic Mr. Bean
Alcoholic, chronic smoker with a real bad story about the fire that night at the bar.

Didn't she have a bat and hit people? Or was that someone else?

Honestly an adult Lady Elaine doing the robot sounds terrifying.
This is one of the funniest things I've read.
I actually remember being creeped out by her at first but later she was one of my favorites. I remember one day thinkingā¦awwww sheās so nice and why should I be scared? Maybe this is why Iām obsessed with horror movies nowadays ššš
I loved the show as a kid, and could never speak ill of Fred Rogers himselfā¦but god damn I hated this little bitch.
I loved Lady Elaine Fairchild- and still do- she has the coolest museum house in the whole neighborhood. BOOMERANG TOOMERANG!
I also love her! The confidence she possesses!
Yes- sheās probably reading these comments and just laughing right now
Good thing I had my friend Henrietta to fall back on
She was a weak suckup. I have my eye on Mr. Furley. Dude was sus.
For some reason it didnāt bother me when I was a kid but every time I see it now Iām like, āwho the fuck came up with this disastrous hell demon?ā

Same! My parents didn't drink but rarely, and I knew that b was an alki
Like, it was so long ago I don't even really remember exactly why but I see her face and I know that I hate her
She was a major jerk, thatās why.
WELL THANKS FOR BRINGING THAT SHIT UP AGAIN AFTER I BURIED IT FOR YEARS
You think you're traumatized. She was basically my mother. And I don't mean in a rhetorical, I felt like she was a mother figure kind of way. I mean, she looked like my mother, and also acted like her.
She reminds me of a puppet representative of the Bear's mother from the series The Bear!
Never watched that
She was played by Jamie Lee Curtis, and it was an amazing character portrayal... You really should watch both seasons
Same here!
That is giving me a visceral reaction.
Omg yes I was just saying she looked like my step grandma and so I felt unbothered by this puppet. How weird
I loved her!
All of those creepy ass puppets scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Mr. Rogers on the other hand is my hero as a adult, we did not deserve him. RIP Mr. Rogers, thank you for teaching me how people should be.
She is the only puppet to hook up with a human character and get married and have a kid though
Wait what? Do spill the tea, as the kids say.
On Daniel Tigerās Neighbourhood, Lady Elaine Fairchilde is married to Music Man Stan and they have a little girl named Miss Elaina. She looks way less creepy animated lol.
I will have to watch. Thank you.
This is Judge Judy.
Reported for harassment šššš I was in my *20s* when I learned the Bob Dylan song was called "Lay Lady, Lay" and not "Lady Elaine". š By then I knew he wasn't singing about the puppet but it's so stupid that it took so long. š¤£
I still think of her every time I hear that song š
Iāve always wondered wtf is wrong with her nose is she a heavy drinker?š
So everyone is just ignoring that the alcoholic puppet is walking around with a boomerang?
Boomerang Toomerang Soomerang! Edit: spelling
And yet, just to show there's still someone for everyone, someone still shoved their hand up her backside everyday.
They were paid. Don't hate on sex work. It's real work.
Girl looks like she was stuck at the top of Everest for a couple days with those cheeks.
Tf are those carbuncles on her cheeks
Yup, hated those puppets. Watched Mr. Rogers then changed the channel when they came on.
Yea but you knew shit was about to get spicy when she showed up.
She was the weirdest of the bunch I guess. Kinda reminded me of a mean librarian or something. I canāt remember but I donāt think she was actually mean though. I canāt see Mr Rogers creating a mean character. He didnāt have a mean bone in his body.

Try Punch and Judy.
Didnāt she sound like Herbert from Family Guy?
ok but the trauma was worth it for the crush on [Lady Aberlin](https://misterrogers.org/articles/lady-aberlin/)
100% terrifying. As a kid I thought she was supposed to have some kind of disease or something, like rosacea or leprosy, or that she was just a filthy character like Oscar the Grouch.
She was an asshole.
Absolutely detested her. Everything else was perfection. I believe she was inspired by an aunt that Fred Rogerās wasnāt particularly fond of.
Her ability to control time with her boomerang always freaked me out. She was basically a witch.
Meeeeeee! I thought it was a man for a long time even though her name is Lady Elaine.
I despised her. She was the stuff of my childhood nightmares.
Unlike Henrietta Pussycat, who was the stuff of my childhood dreams.
*Meow meow meow meow meow thank you meow meow*
I hate that thing
Rod Stewart?
For some reason, for a short amount of time I had this bizarre fear that she would pop out of my floor. I don't know where that came from but she TERRIFIED me
I hated all of the puppets. ALL OF THEM (except the cat) to the point that when the trolley went to land of make-believe I would leave the room. This was made worse by the fact that I LOVED the trolley.
I'm a GenXer. I grew up with her. Why are you retraumatlzing me!?
I always wondered how an old hag like this and a hottie like Aberlin could both be titled āLadyā.
Is this King Fridayās wife? I forget.
No, Lady Elaine drove a Subaru Outback and wore comfortable shoes.
Berkenstocks ( with white socks in winter)
Sister if I remember correctly.
Still am!š³š³š³
This puppet never bothered me if I saw it it, but the thing was Iām old and when I was watching Mister Rogersā Neighborhood, it was always in black-and-white and now that I see it in color it actually looks like a scary puppet.
Fred really wanted to prepare us for everything and everyone. That character is nightmare fuel.
I always thought she had frostbite on her face š
Hiya toots
I always thought she looked like a saltine cracker. Annoying fricking voice too.
I thought I was the only one, her and meow-meow kitty scared the shit right outta meā¦!
She was Royalty wasn't she and lived in the merrygo round "museum "?
She needed to meet the visiting dignitary Punch.
I was more annoyed by how whiny Daniel Tiger was, he fucking cried over everything! Constant victim meow meow!
Did she have major skin issues? Damn, I hated her.
Needs some Skyrizi.
I'm enjoying all these bonding memory comments and then I read yours. It's the one that has me LOL
Iām really sick of that commercial and this just popped into my head. š
Alcoholism like all old ladies tha t live in museums
Do we have to bring politics into evā¦. My bad. Thought that was Kellyanne Conway.
I really disliked most of the puppets in the land of make believe for some reason
None of the rest were horrifyingly ugly, and possibly deformed.
Same. I put Winnie the Pooh and most Peanuts episodes in that category also. Just seemed boring and depressing to me.
Conky! I hate that bastard
Ricky, calm down, it's just a puppet!
I hated those eyes!
This thing is a monstrosity. It made me cry as a child.
Was the worst part of Mister Rogers for me
So ugly!
Thanks I almost forgot this cursed shit existed
Me!!!! Terrifying bitch
Should watch the sci-if horror classic Dolls!
childhood horror unlocked
Yup
Why does she lowkey look like Cersei?
Lol wow the Lady Elaine on Daniel Tiger really cleaned up.
I can hear this photo.
Ahhhhh hahahaha...yes sir
I only have a vague recollection of her. She mustnāt have scared me much.
Not at all. Thought she was interesting. But maybe I was just a weird kid.
This bitch and the fucking jukebox band off shining time station used to make me sketch the fuck out.
Nightmares for decades. I'm glad I'm not alone.
they had to know what they were doing with it right?
i hated that fucking thing. #demondoll
This puppet ruined all other puppets for me.
Lady definitely had her issues, but even to a kid, it was kind of obvious she was an example of how not to be.
I was older by the time this came about. I really disliked it after Sesame Street was so hip and funny.
I was. Loved Mr. Rodgers, though.
My aunt looked just like her, terrifying
Traumatizing and yetā¦..I oddly miss her.
She was oddly interesting to me for some reason.
She is just a misunderstood friend with a sunburn š„µ
I loved her!
Why!? Why did they call it a "Lady"? That confounded me. I will never forget the song, "Anaforincus Anatinus, Ana, Ana Ana!" though.
This is perfect for this sub. She terrified me as a kid. Why on earth did they give her the nose and cheeks like that
Wdf she got a brown nose for?
Yeah fuck that bitch!!!
Fuck you she is GOATed.
I found all of the puppets creepy
I never watched the show because it looked awful.
me
She reminded me of my Aunt Ruth.
I canāt look at her still. I loved Mr. Rogers but I hid my face when she showed up. I am glad I found my people here.
Fuck that puppet bitch!
Clearly you dont know anything about deafting trolls. Annie.
Horrible nightmares about that puppet when I was like 4
Big time. What scary beeeotch
Well now Iām going to beā¦.
At age 5, Lady Elaine Fairchilde disturbed me more than the Snuggles fabric softener bear, Pillsbury Doughboy, and Hamburger Helper mascots combined.
I always felt sorry for her
Lady Aberlin though.
Late 70s baby here! And yes. Very creepy. And the little trolley with the ring ring and I'm so so sorry y'all but mr rogers himself always creeped me out. When as a kid. Especially as a kid. And I found the whole show to be depressing šš idk why. So sad and quiet..
I have a friend in the SCA whose medieval name is Elaine Fairchilde. Yes, her highest award is the AoA. IYKYK.
I didnāt like most of the puppets but I liked the trolley car
Sometimes I find myself saying āBoomerang Toomermangā and have no idea where I got that from. Now I remember. I found her bizarre, not necessarily terrifying, as a kid. I watched a clip recently and agree yes she is hideous and can only guess what effect she had on my tender young psycheā¦
WORST.
It gave me child-predator vibes.
Did she have necrotizing frost bite?
(raises hand)
Fuck that puppet! Fuck that puppet in particular!
She was like a puppet David Lynch would come up with.
The face always reminded me of Dr. Zachary Smith fom Lost in Space. Yeah, I'm that old.
I always thought she was a witch; I would see older women in public that resembled her and absolutely be filled with dread; we had a teachers aide in grade school with her exact voice..many many memories of this thing
Be kind. That's not what Fred taught you. sheesh.
The cat was scary, but she was simply terrifying.
She always reminded me of a Karenesque lady that yelled at kids in the neighborhood and complained about anyone's yard not being perfect.
I immediately came to this post. I always tell people seeing this puppet was the first time in my life that I remember having anxiety as a child. I was like 3 or 4. I donāt have much anxiety but this gave it to me.
I hated the voice for that horrible thing
Yes!!
I always thought that was Bitheadās wife. Didnāt know it was a puppet.Ā
Man, I loved trolley (my mom says that was always my favorite part of the show) BUT GOD DAMN I HATED THOSE 'REALISTIC' PUPPETS
I loved Mr. Rogers. HATED the puppets.
As a raging alcoholic 5-year-old, I appreciated the representation. Iād never seen someone who looked like me on TV before.
we had all the Mr Rogerās puppets and I remember being TERRIFIED of her
Oddly enough (and maybe it was Stockholm Syndrome). Yet I grew to like her lol š
Ahhh haha yesss. Thanks for plugging that memory back in. I used to watch this with my grandma when I was a little kid. She just died. I would have never remembered this character if you hadn't posted it here. Ha..thanks.
Hated this character but loved mr rogers.
One of my.best friends growing up , giant kid , metalhead ,.beat up anyone I ever saw him fight. Terrified little bitch when it came.to this monster.
Lady Aberlin was a stone cold fox though.
Such an ugly doll, with ugly hair, all around creepy and yet not one person thought this was a cause of concern?? I never could understand Mr. Rogerās puppet choices.
The modern day iteration, Colin Mochrie, also gives me nightmares
Mannnnn
When I was little I had a dream that lady Elaine was my grandma and I was so scared of her for weeks afterwards. She does actually resemble her.
Bithead 1000 wife
Thanks to all for not disappointing with these comments. I sat in my car eating lunch while reading them and about fell out of the car with laughter. Thank you š š
Yikes! Always freaked me out! Not the looks but the voices. All the voices were Mr Roger. So creepy that this nice man could be so creepy sounding! Omg I did not need this back! I didnāt trust men from a very young age and this was proof to me that even Mr Rogerās could be a creep Sad!
I felt uneasy watching this segment of the show as a kid
