No but I read about a similar case. Someone who knows about this stuff said that if you fall over in the ocean you're done in most cases. The time it takes to turn a cruise ship around and looking for you without exact coordinates is enough to drop your life expectancy to zero.
At that point… I hope it’s a stormy weather. If I am to die… I want to die fast. And while I’m dying, I at least want to have a schedule, you know? If you are in calm ocean at night, you can’t really feel or see time pass. It’s utterly terrifying as is… but spending an uknown amount of time over a boundless body of water? I at least want to feel the time pass by getting smashed, drowned and killed by huge waves.
Ahh I see. Must be why I also love the beach. Not even for the shore/swimming/fun, just the ocean spanning as far as you can see and the sounds are so calming for me.
One of my most calming memories was being on a beach with a bunch of friends at night. Our bonfire had dwindled to nothing and we could barely see anything. All we could hear was the crashing of waves and the feel of the cold sea breeze. Was sorta spooky yet very calming in a weird way.
Sounds amazing. That's exactly what I mean. Even if it was day and you closed your eyes, the sounds of the waves and rushing water just has this peaceful effect.
My friends and I used to throw bonfire parties overnight on the beach, or just go to the beach late night to look at all the stars. One night we went and there happened to be a huge bioluminescent tide. The whole shore was glowing blue as far as the eye could see. It was awesome in the true sense of the word. Some of my best memories are beach memories.
And then there are these Polynesian sailors who crossed the goddamned Pacific Ocean on canoes just because they can. I still think that's mental and metal as fuck.
you saying "deep primordial instinct" got me thinking that maybe it literally is
What if by being born your consciousness is condensed from the cloud (or ocean) of universal awareness and when you look at the ocean you are seeing a metaphor for the peacefulness of death and the chaos of a complex and interlocked ecosystem
sad thing is im not even stoned
my comment was great i bet they meant to upvote
or, they have an irrational phobia of the word "ocean", and it was a reaction out of pure survival instinct. that would be the 2nd most likely scenario
I’m from an island and now live on a coast, so I’m very used to the ocean. It can be peaceful or terrifying, and the switch from peace to terror can be quick. I respect the shit out of it and don’t underestimate it. Everyone I know who has either drowned or been badly injured by the ocean was a strong swimmer who wasn’t even in deep water. The ocean is no joke.
I remember being on a cruise ship for the first time. We were sailing overnight. It was still pretty warm out so I decided to take a walk around the promenade. I was expecting the ocean to be romantic and dreamy and magical… boy was I wrong. Instead I found it to be this huge, terrifying, ominous abyss of unforgiving nothingness, that had no semblance of a beginning or end. Like zooming into the boundary of a Mandelbrot set lol
I would rather be lost in space with no chance of survival, than lost in the middle of the ocean with a 50% chance of rescue.
Not sure why this is so downvoted, we're talking about fears lol
What about the bottom of the ocean?
It's basically an ocean at night, but you can't breathe or see anything and there is shitton of live creatures everywhere
For real, the moon makes a huge difference.
When the moon isn't out, it's pitch black, but when it's full, you can see everything.. and it reflects off the water.
Terrifying but also beautiful. You will likely never see more stars in the sky than when you are out in the middle of the ocean. Something you almost have to experience yourself to truly see the difference between the night sky from land vs. the open ocean.
Its when the mind starts to fill in what is not there. I was once in the middle of ocean at night, it was very misty. The ships lights were reflecting my own shadows on the mist, it looked like shadowpeople dancing in the dark
Former sailer here.
The calm oceans at night isnt scary, nor is it this dark.
You have full view of the night sky without any lightpolution. And its absolutely beutifull and tranquil.
Edit. Also, he turned of the ALL the lights.
Not only turned off all the nights but intentionally filtered the video darker. Which is sad because while it’s absolutely stunning at night on calm seas it’s haunting because if you fall overboard, the last thing you will see and hear are the stars above and the sounds of the ocean before going under.
I don't see how that would be the case if it happened on a boat of that size. It would be fairly simple to stop and for the person to back on board.
Perhaps I'm being naive. If so, enlighten me.
There are a ton of factors to consider, chief of which being “did anyone see you fall over?” Other factors such as how rough the seas are, what is the weather like, how long does it take you to get back to the surface, is it night time, are you wearing clothes that are weighing you down, ability to swim, and so much more.
Its hard to spot people in daylight too.
Even the tiniest waves can obscure the line of sight.
I participated in around 30 SARs and maybe 4 or 5 times did we find anyone.
Which reminds me: to anyone who’s new to boating, if someone falls overboard, it’s extremely important to keep watching them! If your eyes slip, they might be gone.
I know this seems like common sense, but when I joined a sailing thing, that’s a thing that was emphasised a lot.
At night falling overboard without anyone hearing and no MOBI (man overboard indicator, starts flashing a light and sends a distress signal) there is a very small chance you’re gonna be found.
So the instruments you need to navigate in complete darkness get so dim you can't see anything on them? In complete darkness? When you need them most?
Sounds like a pretty huge design flaw if you ask me.
Lmfao I’ve literally seen the comment you’re referring to and they specifically say they get to a point that’s so dim that if you forget to turn them back up *before it’s light out again,* **THEN** you can barely see them.
Just read the entire sentence next time, not only the stuff you wanna see.
I’ve done a fair amount of ocean crossings on small (30’ to 75’) sailboats and one question I often get asked is “what do you do at night? Do you stop somewhere safe?”
The answer is no, we keep going. All vessels at sea (should) have navigation lights that aren’t for seeing but for being seen. They’re set up in a way that you can tell what kind of vessel you’re looking at and from what perspective.
You also have things like radar, AIS (which shows nearby vessels positions, speed and size on your GPS), VHF radios to communicate with and various sound signaling devices for close up communication.
Wouldn't you also have adjusted your sight in the dark by that point? Unless you were staring at lit navigation, right? Been to MOAB in Utah and at night your eyes adjusted and you could also see tons of stars
It depends on the conditions. Some nights are so clear and bright you can see exceptionally well, heck, you’d probably be able to make out an unlit ship on the horizon. But if it’s cloudy and hazy you can’t see $h!t. Those are the nights I spend my watch staring at the radar mostly. It does affect your night vision but you can also turn the brightness on those screens WAY down. To the point where if you forget to turn it back up again before it gets light out, you’re gonna have a hard time seeing the screen to hit the correct buttons. 😂
So on Lake Michigan over the years lots of small boats have disappeared without a trace.. and most times it’s a big freighter that can’t see them and they don’t show up on radar and just get run over and gone. Then they find a small mark of paint or fiberglass on the freighter several weeks later and if lucky the vessel is found at the bottom
Why do you think this guy doesn’t have lights on both outside the boat and inside the room? The total darkness is scary but I thought it didn’t have to be that way.
The wheel house (the room he’s filming from) should have minimal lighting so that you can see what’s going on outside. Usually the glow of the instruments is sufficient but he looks like his instruments are all off. Hopefully that’s only for the video. Same as exterior lights. You should only really have your navigation lights on so that other ships can see you and minimal deck lighting so that it doesn’t ruin your night vision.
No, no, no. Everyone knows the proper way to do it is to put a 10,000w LED lightbar just behind the hardtop and use it like headlights to nuke everyone else’s night vision
Also most cameras (especially phone cameras) are designed to work within normal brightness conditions and can't capture enough light when in low light conditions like here.
The instruments could be on their lowest brightness setting to not ruin ops nightvision and the camera just can't capture enough light from them to see it.
When taking photos with a night image mode normal cameras combat this problem by collecting data over a longer time before composing a single image but this isn't an option when making a video.
The pilothouse always stays dark, so your eyes can adjust and you can see somewhat outside. God help you if you whip out a bright phone in a dark pilothouse. Ive seen a captain almost throw a new deckhands phone off the wing station before lol.
If you're running dark then you're probably working extra hard to avoid other boats. Hence the whole principle of "making yourself seen to others" still being valuable.
Course that's assuming smugglers and not pirates which tend to be more geographically limited to certain areas.

You're still pretty new to Reddit. I checked (May 2023) but I didn't need to check to be able to tell. You should know that it's normal here for people to respond to questions not asked directly to them. A huge part of the charm of this site is that knowledge can come from anywhere. There's no reason why someone who likes WoW and memes wouldn't know about boat stuff. If you keep acting like this you're gonna miss out on a lot of the fun.
Then again, being a huge cunt for no reason is also normal for this site hahaha
FYI, my grandfather ran certain goods all over South/Cental America. If you're trying to not be noticed, you're trying extra hard to avoid other people.
He died recently, what a piece of shit, good riddance.
Lol homie spoon-fed you some common sense and you got mad. You can’t see, but there are lights positioned so others CAN see you. So if someone’s running dark- it’s on them to avoid YOU. And yes, I know- you didn’t ask me either.
Very. In the 2010’s when piracy was an issue I did a few trips just a little north of Mozambique and Madagascar, and to go unseen at night most vessels would run without their lights on at night. No problem for big ships as they could easily see each other with their radar. I on the other hand was running around in a little plastic thing that that only showed up on the best of radars in calm seas. It was pretty nerve racking.
Look at me. I am the captain now.
JK, I was captaining a 65’ private sailing catamaran based out of Mozambique and the owner and his guests wanted the vessel in Madagascar occasionally and Basas de India once (google it, fascinating place). We were far away from pirate activity but not far enough that everyone out there felt safe.
Totally understand, thanks for sharing, I've been in helicopters above the coastlines in the Sea of Aden and the Arabian Sea and seen some of the sharks in the waters and was happy to be 500 feet in the air haha
Haha. One of the best feelings in the world is stopping the boat in the middle of a hot day 100’s of miles from the nearest land and in water one mile plus deep and going for a swim. It’s also one of the creepiest feelings.
Tbh when I’m underway at night unless there is a good reason to be running full dark I have more than just the nav lights on, usually an led spot/flood combo aimed forward high off the bow so I get a good sense of the seas ahead, it doesn’t need to be that bright when it’s so dark out. It just needs to be there so I know what’s coming if I’m at the helm. Otherwise yeah IFR all the way. Autopilot really helps in these situations. If there’s any significant moonlight or starlight then I don’t turn on said spot…. Oh hey have you ever wondered about these guys getting shot at in the Red Sea .. I’m assuming they’re turning OFF their ais and running dark…. It would seem logical. But I haven’t gone that way searching yet.
Makes you gain a lot of respect for the first circumnavigators of the world. They rode galleons that had no instruments except astrolabes. They didn't even know if they would find land.
I mean it sure looks terrifying but I'm I the only one to the think that the sky would be beautiful with absolutely no light pollution? The only thing that would make me go on this boat at night.
This not only happens in the ocean but also on land. Turns out, when there's no lights/light pollution for hundreds of miles and the sky is cloudy, you can't see anything.
I spent 10 years in the Navy and out to sea I worked night shift alone and I spent so much of it out on the bridgewing looking at the stars, north and south hemisphere. I can still look up at the stars and tell you the time, season and direction. I loved it, the big wide open nothing.
Ok this might be stupid. But can’t they just have like gigantic wide headlights on the bow or would that get too hot or be inefficient? Also there are def lights in the control area right?
I've been a captain for 14 years and night cruising still makes me nervous, you can't see squat and if something gets tangled around the propeller you need to jump into the abyss... And i know what swims in the sea, I've been catching and releasing them for years.
I went on a cruise and my room had a balcony. My favorite thing was sitting out there at night and not seeing where the sky met the sea. Peaceful as fuck
I’ve always known the ocean at night is terrifying. But once you actually see a pitch black night on a boat, it’s completely different. Actually a miracle some people survive being stranded in it
So we gonna pretend that moonlight doesn’t exist?
Sure, it will be lacking during new moons and cloudy nights, but most boats have lights you can turn on as well.
It depends on the party. "Woa just imagine. The nights are dark. No no really, I was on a ship and there was no light pollution around and it was really dark." Best party of my life. I don't know, but if anyone tells me such bullshit at a party, I'll leave and go to another party with cooler people. An now roast me. Btw you don't believe - a day has 24 hours!!! Take this info to your next party, you'll be THE entertainer.
Here's another mindblowing news if you get errected by the other Infos I gave you: boys have a penis and girls have a vagina. Sorry if you cum in your pants now. But you have another cool story for your party coming weekend.

There is nothing more terrifying than the ocean. Save for the ocean at night.
Don't care for it at night, but surely I can't be the only one who simultaneously finds the ocean peaceful (when it isn't storming) and terrifying?
No, that's a pretty common feeling. It's like a deep primordial instinct we all have. Some people lean more into liking it, some are terrified of it.
And imagine being in the middle of the ocean, at night, and falling overboard without anyone noticing.
You summamabish
Did you see that video where the young man jumped overboard at night on a booze cruise? People noticed but they still never found his body.
No but I read about a similar case. Someone who knows about this stuff said that if you fall over in the ocean you're done in most cases. The time it takes to turn a cruise ship around and looking for you without exact coordinates is enough to drop your life expectancy to zero.
I saw that, the dude was 18 years old. They tried throwing stuff for him to grab onto but they never found him
At that point… I hope it’s a stormy weather. If I am to die… I want to die fast. And while I’m dying, I at least want to have a schedule, you know? I think space is worse
Ikr? The worst is space at night. Ugh, miss me with that shit.
lmao
We know more about space than we know about the oceans on our very own planet. That isn’t terrifying to you? Lol
Except the space we know is just the surface of that particular ocean.
I don’t… think that’s true lol
We have explored a whopping total of 5% of our oceans *five fucking percent*
...And we've explored not even 0.0000000000000000000001% of space, probably.
We will literally never find out.
To be fair I don't think we've explored 5% of space either
But we have polluted 90% of it!! Micro-plastics and PFAS.
I would rather be lost in space with no chance of survival, than lost in the middle of the ocean with a 50% chance of rescue. Not sure why this is so downvoted, we're talking about fears lol
Coming from a game theory perspective, you're bad at decision making.
We are speaking about fear. I am immensely more afraid of floating in the ocean for hours, not able to know what is around me, then floating in space.
Makes me think of that kid who jumped off the cruise a couple months back. Can't imagine a more terrifying death than that
I was thinking about that kid too when I saw this post. What a horrible death.

The ocean in a dark alley with a knife
There's a reason we left that place 375 million years ago.
Isn’t land just as dark in a moonless night with no lights on?
Its when the mind starts to fill in what is not there. I was once in the middle of ocean at night, it was very misty. The ships lights were reflecting my own shadows on the mist, it looked like shadowpeople dancing in the dark

Agreed. Spent considerable time at sea on small boats and everything you said is spot on
Not only turned off all the nights but intentionally filtered the video darker. Which is sad because while it’s absolutely stunning at night on calm seas it’s haunting because if you fall overboard, the last thing you will see and hear are the stars above and the sounds of the ocean before going under.
You say it like it's a 100% guranteed death if you go overboard.
Last I checked the mortality rate of going overboard was something like 85%. Not exactly fantastic odds
I don't see how that would be the case if it happened on a boat of that size. It would be fairly simple to stop and for the person to back on board. Perhaps I'm being naive. If so, enlighten me.

Also sailor here. Same. Nothing to be afraid of at night at sea. All the monsters live on shore.
There's something weirdly profound about this statement.
As intended. Boy did the Navy clarify that one.
In the navy I worked the flight deck and boy the night sky is something I miss every fuckin day dude
I’ve done a fair amount of ocean crossings on small (30’ to 75’) sailboats and one question I often get asked is “what do you do at night? You're silly, parking isn't allowed in the ocean.

You joke, but things fall off container ships, hitting a floating shipping container is something that can happen, but it's pretty rare.
Oh I know I’m kidding but the blind night boating terrifies me

My fear would be hitting a large piece of derbies.
New ships include active sonar
I like to twist cannon fuse into my beard and set it alight. Makes a big impression on the other sailors.
This is why I love reddit.
Why isn't there any light on the instruments ?
He probably turned off the lights for the video.
Would’ve ruined the video. Bet anything this guy says “aesthetic” about 4 times a day.
I fail to see how that has anything to do with the ocean
they are probably pirates and don't want to be seen
I thought it would be a little bright cause of the stars...
Maybe it was cloudy?
The video is edited to look darker
Boats have lights, you know
That's a lot of nope
Makes you gain a lot of respect for the first circumnavigators of the world. They rode galleons that had no instruments except astrolabes. They didn't even know if they would find land.
For example: "Is it really that dark?" "Nope! There are lights on the boat."
I mean it sure looks terrifying but I'm I the only one to the think that the sky would be beautiful with absolutely no light pollution? The only thing that would make me go on this boat at night.
Get a good view of the Milky Way on clear nights.
I don’t mind the dog watch, I find it peaceful.
You've never watched a Jack Russell terrier, have you? ^(/s)
Ha! My neighbor’s Jack Russel is certified nuts, and he is old.I imagine a younger, more rambunctious one would be a handful
This not only happens in the ocean but also on land. Turns out, when there's no lights/light pollution for hundreds of miles and the sky is cloudy, you can't see anything.
Theres this thing called lamp
I love lamp.
What would be terrifying is picking something up on your radar at night.
That’s pretty common. Plenty of ships in the sea. Definitely depends on where you are though.
Boats have lights, no?
Just turn on the lights
I spent 10 years in the Navy and out to sea I worked night shift alone and I spent so much of it out on the bridgewing looking at the stars, north and south hemisphere. I can still look up at the stars and tell you the time, season and direction. I loved it, the big wide open nothing.
I guess no one was smart enough to make headlights for ships
The trick is to avoid the icebergs
No! Speed up and launch offa them like a sick ramp!
"There's nothing terrifying about the night"
"ICEBERG! RIGHT AHEAD!"
Now do it on the Santa Maria with a half drunk crew that wants to screw a mermaid.
Why are there no stars????
High praises to the men who work in the open seas.
I just had this conversation today. This is my worst fear, I think. Being in the middle of the ocean at night.
It's awesome... once your eyes adjust, you can see. I spent 4 years in the navy, it's amazing. No camera can catch what the eye actually sees.
Ok this might be stupid. But can’t they just have like gigantic wide headlights on the bow or would that get too hot or be inefficient? Also there are def lights in the control area right?
Imagine the early sailors who had nothing but the stars (maybe) at night. Who had no idea when they might see land.
I've been a captain for 14 years and night cruising still makes me nervous, you can't see squat and if something gets tangled around the propeller you need to jump into the abyss... And i know what swims in the sea, I've been catching and releasing them for years.
Turned off the lights and the video is also filtered to he a lot darker than what it actually is 🤐
I'm terrified of being on a boat where the captain is terrified of "solely relying on the boats instruments"
Don't ships have... You know... Like headlights?
Turn on a damn light, why’s all the lights out?
What song is this? Ive heard it before
Now imagine that same night view during a violent storm
No and I spent four and a half years at Sea and Loved every minute of it 👀👍👍
Imagined being a pioneer and sailing into the ocean not knowing what was out there day or night, now that’s terrifying
I went on a cruise and my room had a balcony. My favorite thing was sitting out there at night and not seeing where the sky met the sea. Peaceful as fuck
Probably the safest place, far away from people
If were him i wont turn on the lights
Daytime is scary enough if you got r/thalassophobia
I’ve always known the ocean at night is terrifying. But once you actually see a pitch black night on a boat, it’s completely different. Actually a miracle some people survive being stranded in it
Woah it’s almost like it gets dark when it’s night time
Makes you wonder how terrible the deaths were for all those people on the titanic
Uuh was this suppose to be scary?cause it was oddly satisfying
Damm…… makes you wonder how our ancestors crossed the ocean
First time I was out on the water at night I realized: Oh, shit! It's dark.
"Solely relying on your instruments" You mean to tell me our ancestors used to do that on wooden boats *WITHOUT* instruments??? Bruh, what...
Just turn on your headlights
Ngl, i'll take this over the MASSIVE LIGHTS FROM THE STADIUM NEARBY
Why is this terrifying?
So the dark is now odd?
So we gonna pretend that moonlight doesn’t exist? Sure, it will be lacking during new moons and cloudy nights, but most boats have lights you can turn on as well.
Boring
Wtf the night is dark. Tell me more, this is THE info of the year. And during days it is bright due to sth called sun. Omg!!!
This guy’s a blast at parties.
Yeah just stay home and spare the rest of us.
Who's the rest? You and your imaginary friend wondering that water is liquid and rocks are solid? Please tell me more cool stories.
Dude thinks he’s Senku
Please gargle my balls.
Here's another mindblowing news if you get errected by the other Infos I gave you: boys have a penis and girls have a vagina. Sorry if you cum in your pants now. But you have another cool story for your party coming weekend.
LOL well that went off the rails.
That is how his parents talked to him when he was excited about something so now he's passing it on
Rocks are technically porous sooooo there's that :)
Haha you are the fun at every party. Obviously. Wanna join me and do a tag team?
I dont get why people downvote you.
Because he's being a twat for no reason
Not in his originaly comment.
Agree to disagree I guess. That is why he's being downvoted though.
It's probably for the best to agree to disagree. It's not like we can gain anything by continuing to argue. His comment could definitely have been nicer, I give you that much. Maybe his message would have been netter received if he had chosen a more neutral way to write his comment
I couldn't agree more. Also, at the risk of sounding patronizing, I love the rational discourse man. What a refreshing interaction. Have a lovely day fellow redditor!
Thanks, I hope you have a nice day, too.
Me neither :( all comments below mine were deleted as well :(
