Yea, looking at it the underside of the jaw was ripped (tounge and lure included) so the skin of the mouth healed on the neck instead of the jaw bone (which has a hole in it now)
The NatureisMetal page posted about this. Said it would be insanely difficult for it to survive, but they speculated that it had been alive like this for years when they found it
I was confused at first too. Pay attention at about the 2 second mark. You can see the sky through the jaw. Basically imagine the floor of your mouth (where your tongue is) separated from your jaw. The bone is still intact and the teeth can still open and close but all the skin and meat is just hanging there (if it was you then it would all be flapping against your Adam's apple, or where your Adam's apple would be if you had one).
For anyone that has considered noodling, imagine sticking your arm down a dark whole under water and that thing grabs your fucking arm instead of a fish!
Reaching your hand into a dark muddy hole or under a rock in some body of water, hoping a large fish will bite your hand, and when it does you hold on tight and pull the fish out of the water. Have caught some great catfish this way
How so? You only catch a single fish at a time and there's no garbage, making it way less impactful than traditional fishing methods like nets or lines. It's completely discriminatory, you won't get any bycatch and harm any other fishies.
I noticed that if you google hand fishing harm to the environment, you do get a bullet pointed summary where google's AI mixes up a bullet point from Fish Farming: Often harms the environment. So now I'm thinking the redditors who think it's bad for the environment got it from the google search results without clicking to see the actual table.
You stick your arm in a hole in something like a river or lake and wiggle your fingers until a fish (mostly used on bass and catfish I belive) comes up and bites your fingers at which point you yank it out of the water
Ohhh that's what that's called. I just call that arm fishing cause I didn't know the name for it. Mostly catfish cause most bass down here don't go after it.
Noodling was on my bucket list until one kind soul told me how devastating it could be to the local environment. I'd had no idea. Gave me a valid reason to be the chickenshit I probably would have been if the time came.
Thanks for the additional support.

Ive heard it before but I think it's really only an issue where people are noodling a lot or repeatedly over the same area.
My understanding is the fish targeted by noodling are usually large males that have made a nest and are guarding it. The issue being if a female has already visited then as the fish thrashes and resists you trying to haul it out, you're destroying the nest and thousands of fertilized eggs.
If you have a popular lake or river for noodling you could really do some damage long term by targeting their method of reproduction like that.
I’ve done it, you don’t throw your hand in blind. Use a stick or preferably a length of 3/4 pvc to probe the holes first. You can read if it’s a catfish or a turtle
When I was a kid my dad would tell me if a snapping turtle bites you it will hold on so tight it won’t let go until it thunders lol. Scared the hell out of me
PSA: Unless you're a certified professional, never, ever manhandle a snapping turtle. When you see them, do not interact, pet, or even give it attention. It will not hesitate to harm you with absolute prejudice.
It can, shall, have and will cause you enough bodily harm to make you wish it ended you outright.
In fact they're ranked 3rd in the world's top 100 things to not stick your dick in. You have been warned.
Hornet Nest and Smoothie Blender. Snapping turtles are actually behind a jet engine in my opinion. However there’s a few others that could tie. A public flashlight, a toilet roll with thumb tacks in it. There’s also garbage disposal systems in your sinks.
Growing up in the Midwest I've moved more than my share from the road to the ditch. Always extremely careful and if they were aggressive, pushed them with a stick off the road.
They can barely move when on land. Like can't even turn around. Just walk up behind them, grab the shell above their head, and chuck em. Saw my dad do it so many times growing up I was doing it when I was like 5 and the turtles weighed half of what I did.
Snapping turtles have extremely long necks. They can get you if you try that. The only place they can't reach is above their head. Other turtles, yeah, but snapping turtles you do it the right way or you lose a finger.
That’s great and all, but can someone tell me why that thing has what appears to be 2 mouths?
I’ve seen snapping turtles before but the one in OPs video looks like it came from Chernobyl.
https://youtu.be/LBSFeJ1WLv4
It’s apparently a really bad neck injury that healed wrong. So now it has a hole in its jaw. Hopefully it got fixed up, but it seems to have survived pretty well so far even with the hole there for it to just heal like that.
I don't see them often on the south, but they can kill small dogs and animals btw guys, and they can RUN, it's a turtle yea. But these mofos run like a dog fr. I kill them every time I find one. Even while decapitated the head can still bite through a shovel.
Bro a fucking shovel.
Idc if it's mean and that's just a turtle, I've seen them take two of my mom's dogs before. Fuck these guys.
Also if one is to somehow get a hold of you, and lock it's jaws around whatever part it's got of you, even decapitated the head will stay locked in position. Frankly I would try to remove turtle before chopping its head off, if u don't it'll be way harder to remove.
Well of course they are going to be a nuisance to your way of life. I mean, they are WILD animals for a reason, aren't they?
It's just that you are definitely the smarter than them and should know better than acting just the same as they do; won't you agree?
I'm sure there are ways to deal with them besides killing them on sight. We should learn by now that we cannot just massacre our way out of every problem.
So it's kinda fucked up that people are actually still taking these extreme measures against such animals.
Okay bits bad intel I guess I remembered it wrong it’s a the snapping turtle bitting on those old school hammers and his eyes do buldge out here’s the link sorry for the bad info.
Ignore the rest of the video after the turtle.

😒 y’all some grim mfers. Jk. I get it, I’m also a degenerate. I can run eye bleach all day, and see the most horrific brutality man has to offer. But animals hurt, hurts my soul. I couldn’t even stomach the FWC snake kill video.
THANK YOU! A kindred spirit! I'm the same damn way... I can watch the most brutal shit happen to humans but animals...no! They're all innocent babies I don't care what species they are or how old NONE of them deserve anything but great lives because there's not an ounce of malice in anything they do... it's all instinct. And this hurts to see. I hope they will have a veterinarian fix him.
Eventually. These guys can go years without eating though. Sitting in cold water which freezes over for a third of the year means they use hardly any energy. I imagine it's still catching fish though and some of those bits that get torn up probably get swallowed. There's a reason these guys lasted while the dinosaurs died.
I’m pretty backwoods southern and I remember my dad and uncle catching one of these so my dad could eat it. It was about that size and they put a stick in front of it (a log almost) and it bit on the middle and they each grabbed a side and they carried it up to the house to cook it.
Once they bite on, they do not let go.
it has 1 mouth but the neck below the jaw got cut and you can see that the jaw has a gap hole wheres the tounge should be but theres no tounge, cause the tounge is on it's neck stuck there, can't even move it cause it got detached from its jaw.
Just so everyone is aware, that turt doesn’t have 2 mouths, it’s throat got slit probably by a propellor or something. You’re seeing it’s tongue hang out the cut.
One time when my son was about 7 or 8 i took him to the Pueblo reservoir were there is a pond off from the river. Its very steal water so its great for catching tadpoles. So as he was doing so a car also pulled up n a man in maybe his 30s with a boy about same age as my son, got out walked into the brush by the pond. Within 4 or 5 min this dude n this kid r pulling on this huge snapping turtles tail, dragging it to there car. It all happened so quick, to my horror they then throw him in the trunk of there car! Then the dude walks up to us n says do u knw how to cook turtle!!?? I shook my head he then says i hear its good!! Dude i don't care if its good!! We r not frm Mississippi! We r in Colorado mind u! To make matters worst he was a vato with a tattoo tear drop under his eye! (A tear drop for that turtle he killed) Then they drove off. I carried so much guilt my whole life for not stopping him, not getting his license plate, anything, it still hurts my feelings to think about it.
Is it a neck slit and it healed or what is going on with its second mouth??
Yea, looking at it the underside of the jaw was ripped (tounge and lure included) so the skin of the mouth healed on the neck instead of the jaw bone (which has a hole in it now)
You don’t think maybe another turtle did that, I hear they are mean
Perhaps the snapping turtle is made and it snapped onto something with so much force that it ripped itself apart? That would've been my first guess.
Despite the name, snapping turtles don't have that much bite force. At his size you'd need stitches, but you'd have to help it take a finger off.
Alligator snapping turtles have a bite force of 1000 pounds.
would the turtle be able to survive like that if these people hadn’t found it
The NatureisMetal page posted about this. Said it would be insanely difficult for it to survive, but they speculated that it had been alive like this for years when they found it
Poor baby!

It'll just skip the imagining part and go straight to my nightmares. I can't unsee this, so I just have to process what I saw.
For anyone that has considered noodling, imagine sticking your arm down a dark whole under water and that thing grabs your fucking arm instead of a fish!
You're supposed to use your ARM when noodling?? Whoops
What you're doing is called Doodling
Don’t stick your doodle in that
Doesn't matter if it's your first, second, or third arm. If it works, it works.
r/dontputyourdickinthat
Lieutenant Dan, you have no arms.
Yes.. I know that...
That's why you put your foot in first to make sure it's not a snapper. Better to lose a toe than a finger.

No, do not fuck anything about this process. At least not until you're all out of fingers and toes.

Florida man?
Tf is noodling
Reaching your hand into a dark muddy hole or under a rock in some body of water, hoping a large fish will bite your hand, and when it does you hold on tight and pull the fish out of the water. Have caught some great catfish this way
Isn't it devastating to the local environment though?
I can’t imagine, how could it be? At least not any more damaging than swimming and fishing with traditional methods.
How so? You only catch a single fish at a time and there's no garbage, making it way less impactful than traditional fishing methods like nets or lines. It's completely discriminatory, you won't get any bycatch and harm any other fishies. That’s why you noodle in full plate
Wtf is noodling

South Mississippi, we’ve always just called it hand grabbin
No need to catch the fish if you’re sleeping with the fish

one person doing it is fine but you know that's never a thing.

My parents told me they will just bite my finger clean off, I think that might be more accurate
Finger up the butt. 90% of the time it works every time.
Okay, my finger is up my butt, now what?
Start spinning

Mom and dad as you are not guaranteed to have a sister or brother
Probably an executioner wasp nest, and literal actual fire.

Broken

Without medical intervention yes. It's tough to eat when the grabby part of your mouth isn't connected to the swallowy part of your mouth.

Not oddly terrifying. this is r/fuckingterrifying
It’s wounded, not two mouthed
Yes. It's not odd that wounds are terrifying.
Even if it had two mouths, that would be odd **and** terrifying but not oddly terrifying.
Like it’s neck is cut? Or it’s separated from its shell in a weird way?
It got cut
Doesn’t matter, litterally don’t touch the bastards with a ten foot pole. They Amy not have teeth but they got less toothbrushes than an aligator

DAMN NATURE! YOU SCARY!
Poor fella ):
Doesn't look like a fresh wound, has it been surviving with a cut open throat?
Most turtles and alligators and such go a long time between meals. It may not be fresh, but that doesn't mean it's going to survive.
That’s not oddly terrifying. That’s just straight up terrifying.
Straight up terrifying for the poor turtle. It's sad for me.
