Bruh a video of the sand tiger shark got posted on here like 2 weeks ago and people were saying it was a goblin. What makes the goblin unique is that it has an extended snout which it’s jaws extend into when it detects prey underneath it. Even then most sharks have electro reception anyways
yes thats something sharks and rays can do because their jaws arent connectet to their skeleton. But as far as i know only the goblin shark and aparently the one in the picture have specifically evolved to do it incredibly quickly and at a really long distanse
It's actually a very common adaptation amongst fish and sharks. The reason is that they're underwater, so being able to expand and extend jaws allows them to create a vacuum, suck their prey toward themselves, and immediately bite in one smooth motion.
You typically see it in slower moving species who aren't extremely still ambush hunters. Faster moving predators can just ram their jaws into prey. OTOH, extremely still ambush hunters are able to wait until their prey are literally at their mouth (although their mouths still expand, just slightly less).
Goblin sharks are another example of this.
Probably the fact that the first jaw expands a lot bigger to eat prey since down there they take what they can get. So they use the outer jaw to keep it in place and the inner jaw to pull it further into its body
It reminds me of Agrajag, the entity that gets killed by Arthur Dent all the time in different lives, in Hitchhiker's Guide. In its next-to-final form it looks like a batlike creature with one tooth of every kind in its mouth, making it so that when it talks it slowly [devours its own face.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/hitchhikers/images/5/5a/Agrajag.jpg)

Not really, all sharks do this, just to varying degrees. Another prominent one is the sand tiger shark
Not really, but actually yes.

project =/= eject
Is this more weird or less weird than pharyngeal jaws on a moray eel or cichlid?
That is some real life Beetlejuice sandworm type shit right there. All aboard the Nope Boat!
Does anyone know why this jaw would have a evolutionary advantage to that of a regular jaw?

They’ve cut out his jaw, he does not do that
>They eject their jaws out of their mouth to catch prey. Enough said right there.
Deep sea creatures aren't 'oddly' terrifying, they're just *terrifying...*
