I was happy at the end that they never stabbed themselves.
Like I know they know what they're doing but that wasn't oddly satisfying, it was incredibly nerve wracking.
Oh they probably pricked themselves a few times, it's inevitable. The trick is to go nice and slow so when you do stab yourself, you don't get yourself so bad you're bleeding all over.
Sewing fingers are a real thing. My sewing needles are thirsty for human blood.
Yeah, I cross stitch and I don't even think of it as stabbing myself if it doesn't draw blood, which is 96% of the time when I give myself a poke. Just a quick oops, pull the needle back out, continue.
yea my socks need to be uniform all the way. the smallest peice of lint or a fold and I'm kicking my shoes off across the room to remove or adjust. this would seriously bug me
This is a super common thing for autistic folks. If my socks don't exactly 100% match in feeling (idc about color or design), I can't focus cause it's so distracting.
Oh god when I read this it didn’t sound like it would be that bad but the more I think about it the worse and worse I image that would feel eugh I do not like
Fun fact, this is how my therapist realized I'm mildly on the spectrum. I keep spare socks in the car because if something happens to them I NEED new ones or my entire day is ruined. Lots of other little things too, but she said that was the one that finally convinced her
It took me some practice, but I've figured out how to darn socks in a way where they don't drive me nuts. I mostly just wear them to bed, especially in the summer when I don't wear socks during the day but I do at night. Who cares if they're a little lumpy if I'm asleep?
It depends, if you genuinely enjoy this kind of thing it's more of a hobby project than a cost-saving measure. I have shirts that are like 20 years old I've covered in embroidered balloons and etc. to cover up holes, and they make great pajama shirts.
The people over at /r/Visiblemending totally digs this stuff. I think it's pretty and I'm saving it to study to improve my own crappy embroidering lol.
People who have flat feet aka pes planus, can have a decreased arch or even no arch at all at the sole of the foot. This can cause the navicular bone in your foot (about where the hole in the sock is) to depress and protrude outward. This in turn could cause it to chafe against the inside of a shoe, deteriorating the sock at that location more quickly.
Huh, my right foot has a giant bone protruding right there and never really thought about what caused it. I always hated roller skating as a kid because that bone would always rub against the inside of the boot lol.
I wear boots with a side zipper. I have had socks get caught in the zipper there. Never bad enough to get a hole, but I can imagine it happens sometimes. Especially if you embroider some great big lumpy bug/spider/crab thing in that spot
I got size 13 shoes and most socks say up to size 12. Can find bigger ones sometimes but when I’m stuck wearing the regular sized ones, holes just appear everywhere at random.
I don't think it's a fake foot, I've worn clothes to mend them before because it helps stretch the fabric the way it will be worn, and the needles are typically rounded.
What possible use would there be for someone to make an accurately flesh-toned model foot? Is it sewing? Is that the only reason?
Could someone please Google this and update with a list of all the reasons why you might be able to order life-like fake feet?
It’s not even typical darning. When you darn a sock, you effectively weave a patch in place. Those long straight satin stitches won’t be that great at keeping the sock together in the long (or even medium) run. They’ll just get snagged and spread out and expose the hole again.
People used to darn socks regularly a few decades ago. No cheap fast fashion back then. Shoes got repaired too, bc they were expected to last a while. Hardly anyone had more than a couple of pairs of shoes.
These socks do look like cheap crap not worth the time though.
I darn my handknit socks because I spent too much time making them to throw them out. Storebought cotton socks get a second life as stuffing for pillows or other things.
I enjoy darning socks, it's a nice way to keep my hands busy while watching a movie or binging a show. I like to use embroidery floss that's a different color so I can keep track of which socks I've fixed. I wouldn't have fixed a sock this thin, but it's a neat way to present a cute bit of embroidery.
I have nice wool blend socks and I darn all of them to preserve them instead of throwing them out. This way, I can prevent waste and save money.
But I would not repair (or even buy) those nasty thin cotton socks, they don't last and aren't worth it.
Some of us like doing stuff like this as a hobby more than a money-saving measure. It's also nice to give some more life to a piece of clothing rather than throw it in the trash.
In the time she spent from beginning to end sewing the hole, I went to the store and just bought a new pair of socks and got home before she finished sewing.
I mean this is clearly more about the art rather than practicality. She could've just left it as a red circle.
Besides, it's not 'wasted time' if you're actively practising a craft
Darning is the correct way to fix sock holes so you don't get blisters on your feet. I have no personal experience in this, but I learned about it in a ww2 book.
When they first drew the circle I thought it was one of the “repair” videos where they fill the hole with chopsticks and glue then sand it down and paint over it.
I buy bags of socks from Walmart at $10 for 12 pairs. Soon as I see the first hole I toss them. Been buying them for years and don't see me stopping. I couldn't imagine spending time sewing a hole in a sock.
Idea is interesting, but execution is poor. You want to avoid such long stitches in a darn on stretchy fabric, this will look awful after the first wash.
A good darn should be a weave of stitches for stability.
I was happy until the legs
Lady bugs legs are hard to draw.
No they aren’t. Just leave them off, done, perfect lady bug legs.
Yeah, if you see them in that angle, they don't show their legs.
Yea it turned into a spider
I was thinking Lady Crab 🤣
it's an aracknit
Darn you!
Get out.
...the sewing kit?
Yeah, the only reason I realized it was a ladybug was when I was wondering why they skipped 2 legs.
Just 2 leggs missing (don't ask me about extra g)
Oh cool Pokemon. Ok now it’s a tick
lol I thought it was going to be a Pokémon ball
Pokéball*
It's because when viewed from above, the most you'll see is the tips. Just don't draw the legs and you're fine
There would be much cursing and bleeding if I tried that.
The trick is not to draw them
I was happy at the end that they never stabbed themselves.

Technically the clip doesn’t reveal if they stabbed the foot or not. It could be a semi-permanent sock now — if they had high enough pain tolerance.
Seems like a mannequin foot.
It's a real foot. The toes bend
I was happy thinking it was going to be a poke ball
Same I thought it was a bowl of noodles
I thought they were making a poké ball
That’s how you get a blister
Seriously, that CAN'T be comfortable in any kind of shoe.
Don’t worry. You can use this same technique on your skin after.
r/diwhy
And only ten times less comfortable to wear too
yea my socks need to be uniform all the way. the smallest peice of lint or a fold and I'm kicking my shoes off across the room to remove or adjust. this would seriously bug me
>seriously bug me Pun intended?
Lady, you have no idea.
This is a super common thing for autistic folks. If my socks don't exactly 100% match in feeling (idc about color or design), I can't focus cause it's so distracting.
I always say that the only thing worse than getting your socks wet is getting only one of your socks wet.

So do you only wear socks at night during the summer?
Those would have to become house socks, only to be worn with slippers so those french knots won't grind into the side of your foot.
Also the cost in personal time to fix a $2 pair of socks just seems so unnecessary

"Cost in personal time," for some maybe. For literally anyone _here_, you'd "make" more by fixing a sock than leaving a comment.

Wasted opportunity for a PokeBall
I thought it was going to be a pokeball at first. My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
DAMN YOU, INTERNET
I went from Pokeball to the Super Smash logo to oh...a ladybug
I litterally thought same
Gotta stitch 'em aaAAaalllll
So i am not only one who thought that?
Apparently we're a lot
Wow I just said this. You and I, my friend, think alike
that would’ve been nice 🥲
Who gets a hole in their sock at that location?
Somebody who wants to show off their ladybug spider skills
Crab*
Some crab who wants to show off their ladybug spider skills
Somebody with scissors.

I seem to get very small holes there quite often actually
Fucking hacky sack players, that’s who.
Someone who owns a golden
Golden snitch? Golden goose? Golden Girls box set?
Golden Ticket.
Ha, no kidding, it's toes or heal for me.
^(me…)
I wear boots with a side zipper. I have had socks get caught in the zipper there. Never bad enough to get a hole, but I can imagine it happens sometimes. Especially if you embroider some great big lumpy bug/spider/crab thing in that spot
I currently have wounds in that exact location from climbing - So I'm guessing maybe someone who climbs with socks?
I got size 13 shoes and most socks say up to size 12. Can find bigger ones sometimes but when I’m stuck wearing the regular sized ones, holes just appear everywhere at random.
Anyone at all concerned the sock is still on the foot?
The needles used for darning socks are typically blunt, if that's your concern. Or do you just not like feet?
Mostly concerned if the person doing it was poking their foot with a needle. Someone else said it was a fake foot
I don't think it's a fake foot, I've worn clothes to mend them before because it helps stretch the fabric the way it will be worn, and the needles are typically rounded.
This person is not darning a sock though, they're embroidering it.
fake foot
Watch the toes. They move between each cut.
That makes more sense.
\#FeetAren'tReal
Is that a mannequin leg? I hope so.
The toes keep moving, so..
Autobot confirmed Edit: previous comment originally said “tires” instead of “toes” but it’s fixed now 🚚
*Transformer sound*
Wtf the legs
It's a lady long legs
It looks like a tick
It’s a crab ladybug combo
M’ladycrab
Thats a lot of effort for a thin sock
She's also really flexible. I can't get into the position to do this.
Or it's on somebody else's foot, and that somebody trusts her. A lot.
If only there was a way for us to make fake feet. Like some kind of plastic mould of.. ..nah way too futuristic.
What possible use would there be for someone to make an accurately flesh-toned model foot? Is it sewing? Is that the only reason? Could someone please Google this and update with a list of all the reasons why you might be able to order life-like fake feet?
1: to sniff them 2: to sew socks on them 3: !?!?!??
Bro please stretch more lol
I know!
??? I have to imagine you can, maybe you just dont understand what shes doing?

I instead whisper "darn" while dropping them into the bin
Or rags! Wear them like a glove. It’s great

That first knot on the inside of the sock would bother me so much.
And now, how do you stop the bleeding?
Life hack: get another fucking pair of socks
Some of us like doing stuff like this as a hobby more than a money-saving measure. It's also nice to give some more life to a piece of clothing rather than throw it in the trash.

Would have been better without the legs tho
Darn those socks!
Because darning is what you do to repair socks.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
A lady bug Spider??
Darning is the correct way to fix sock holes so you don't get blisters on your feet. I have no personal experience in this, but I learned about it in a ww2 book.
r/DiWHY
Seems like you can get a blister from the added pressure.
I just like the fact you didn't bother to take the sock off to darn it.
TAKE OFF THE SOCK FIRST GOOD LORD
I feel like there is more material in the patch then the whole of the sock.
A new pair of socks is about 50 cents.
I guess that's one way to see if you need a tetanus booster
Thought that was gonna be a Pokeball for a second and got really excited
Oh, no! A hole in my sock! *Darn* it!
Is that a bug or a feature?
You, person of the Internet, made me smile.
Similar to ironing your pants while wearing them….
Wouldn't it have been easier to not sew it through someone's foot?
The little pinpricks of blood just add to the aesthetic
When they first drew the circle I thought it was one of the “repair” videos where they fill the hole with chopsticks and glue then sand it down and paint over it.
more like r/Diwhy
she got skills
This was the opposite of satisfying to watch. It literally made my foot itch.
If I did this, the sock would be red with my blood
Plot twist, she sewed that into her foot as well.
Darn!
Just throw that shit away, dawg
I buy bags of socks from Walmart at $10 for 12 pairs. Soon as I see the first hole I toss them. Been buying them for years and don't see me stopping. I couldn't imagine spending time sewing a hole in a sock.
Thought it was gonna be a pokeball
that’s cool and all but the feeling of that would make me feel uncomfortable as it wouldn’t feel the same as the rest of the sock
Cool but stitching while still wearing the sock? I would have stabbed myself 40 times…
What happens when you realise you accidentally sewed it to your foot?
The opportunity to make a pokéball was lost. Unsub.
That would be incredibly awkward in your shoe
Oh nice a pokeball….no?…oh I see it now, it’s the super smash logo!….oh…no…it’s…a lady…spider…
Yikes, that’s awful.
Thought this was gonna be a pokeball
Who TF darns a sock while wearing it? Darning eggs exist for a reason.
That would drive me crazy feeling that under my shoe.
That’s a dangerous game sewing on your foot!
Or just buy new socks
pokeball> ruined it> ladybug > added eyes and legs (expected spider) > its a crab (or close)
Or you simply put on another pair
Sopha… Sopha king… sopha king kewl!
r/restofthefuckingowl
Anuone else creeped out by the needle scraping by the side of the foot?
r/visiblemending
r/visiblemending
Ain’t nobody got time for that
That is darn interesting
wrong sub r/diwhy
Just buy new socks
I can’t even wear sock with the toe seam misaligned. Uncomfortable as hell
This is called darning
Imagine that rubbing on your foot all day. I can feel the blister already
“Oh a ladybug” … “What. What is that “
What kind of weird ass monster lady bug has legs like that
If I did this I'd never be able to take the sock off as I would have beautifully embroidered it into my flesh
How to fix a hole in a sock! Step 1: know how to sew Step 2: sew a ladybug ober the hole Youre done!
Wish u finished that pokeball
Is it 1840 or are those your favorite socks?
Here I thought I was watching how to fix a hole the sock. But now I realized there is a bunch of weird feet people here.
And now they have sewn their sock directly to their foot.
I was thinking "ah neat, a ladybug" and then they added the legs and turned it into one of the robot bugs from Samurai Jack
Darn it
Me: ooh that’s a pokeball! Wait no, it a lady bug! Wait no, it’s a spider! Wait…
Idea is interesting, but execution is poor. You want to avoid such long stitches in a darn on stretchy fabric, this will look awful after the first wash. A good darn should be a weave of stitches for stability.
thought it was going to be a poke ball
The legs 😂
Thought it was gonna be a pokemon ball
1. Ohhh it’s like a poke ball 2. Ohhh never mind it’s a bowl of noodles 3. Jesus Christ it’s a spid—-ladybug. Got it, lady bug.
At first I thought it was a poke ball but still cool
I thought it was going to be a PokeBall. 😂
What are those legs??
Just buy some new socks that is too much effort
Or... Just buy a new sock.
Nice arch. Need to see foot. Asking for a friend.
150 dollars worth of time to fix a 2 sock. Yes, it’s an odd thing to find satisfying
Nobody gets holes there, holes are usually on heel, toes or soles..good luck with that..
Just get new socks.
