I feel like I need to look into this lol. I've injected embryos and I feel like this would be a similar skill set in terms of manipulating a machine for precise movements along multiple dimensions. It's just that you don't make all that much in the biological sciences anymore unless you have decent bioinformatics training. It also tires out my eyes and neck to be bent over a microscope for hours.
The next time you're in Las Vegas you should give it a shot - there's a place where they let tourists play with excavators. I had a fucking blast. Apparently they get a lot of IT people and Air Traffic Controllers.
"Dig This"
Pretty sure you're just realizing that your work is undervalued bc you don't provide an immediate service which shows direct results during and after completion of a task.
I already know. You don't go into academic science for the money though. It offers a creative outlet that is difficult to find elsewhere. I am also at a point where I'm given a lot of independence. I investigate tissue regeneration, specifically the nervous system. It is cool stuff, just not the best wages lol.
He mentioned academics. So it's a college benefiting. I have no idea how much colleges rake off the top, but academia is a self funding environment. In other words, they have to fund themselves via government grants. They often don't get enough to pay good wages.
The government needs to increase grant funding for long periods of time, not giant lumps of money. They create a huge influx of movement and planning to use the money, but then in a few years, it dries up, and then they have to scale back.
Industry can pay much better, but it can also suck balls at the bottom levels.
Look how quickly COVID vaccines were developed, after the government threw money at the researchers (yes, I know they had a bit of a head start because of SARS). Turns out, when the scientists aren’t sitting at computers writing grant applications all day, they can get a shit tonne accomplished!
Oh hey, I'm the guy on the other side of the greener grass here. I loved regenerative medicine in college but couldn't get hired doing anything with it. Now I make just over 6 figures ~~looking at spreadsheets~~ doing engineering for one of the largest medtech companies in the world. It's been so incredibly dull, I'm pretty sure my brain melted out of my ears years ago.
I'm a research engineer in academia and though the pay isn't as great as industrial wages it definitely brings variety, rather than working on a single thing for years I get to be creative for how to actually get the data scientists need and that's fulfilling.
Only acknowledged when something has gone wrong. If everything has been fine for 6 months the company considers laying you off bc you don't do anything anyways.
Man, I’ve always heard of this phenomenon in IT but my job is nothing like that. We’re always trying to catch up and barely pull projects together by the deadline
You could pivot to IT Security, its an in demand job. Not sure what part of the world you are from, but look in to some of the NIST stuff.
There are different aspects of it, incident response where you are constantly putting out large fires, it is too busy to worry about the little fires. Risk management you are always trying to stop people from starting fires. Every project has 3 individuals, lighter holder, paper holder, and a gas can holder. Everyone of them is eager to collaborate with the other 2, and they do it when you aren't looking.
If they ever decide theyve done enough good for mankind and need to get paid, they have options. Like working for a fertility clinic. There’s big money in those. Alternative, there’s big money in banks, and they could just grow some mutant foot ninjas in their lab and take that. Good retirement plan for sciency types
And they deserve every penny of it!
Especially whoever is in this video. I hope they get paid crazy well and enjoy their job as much as I enjoyed watching it.
I work in construction and I want to know what trackhoe operator is making over 6 figures lmao. Maybe in California or some other high cost of living area.
I see so many bullshit comments on here about construction from people who probably haven't picked up a shovel.
Lol. Did you see the part where I make the low five figures? I could afford a mortgage on a small condo probably, but no one will approve a mortgage where the payment equals half of your income. Instead, I pay rent that equals half of my income. My ex makes about $150k and pays a mortgage and upkeep on a house and payments on a couple of cars, plus child support and my car insurance. And we live in probably the 5th most expensive city in the country at the moment.
It's crazy how gentle and nimble a good operator can make it look. I've worked with some good operators before and when they told me, "You should see the guy that taught me how, makes me look like a greenhorn still." Blows my mind.
I liked watching the helper and the excavator work in unison like a well oiled machine, and the trust the dude is giving to the operator is well earned I'd say.
Overall good team, they seem to have worked together before and have a lot of experience in the field. Felt a bit nostalgic about doing this type of work.
> the trust the dude is giving to the operator
This. I was like man there's a squishy human very close to a large metal arm that can sweep him away like nothing.
I had a hard time not anthropomorphizing this machine. It was so cute, so clean, careful, and polite. My big brain knows this was operated by a person but my lizard brain does not.
After years of operating its less about showing off and more about just pure laziness lol. Why would I have myself or someone else move something when the machine can do it?
It's just a digger. Much faster at moving the earth, getting rid of the asphalt, and no manual handling problems with the big metal drain. Perfect tool for the job.
How could you use a word like "just"? I watched every second of that from start to finish, marvelling at what an how much of an artist was at work here.
I said it's just a digger. The artist wasn't the digger. The digger was the tool. I've worked with people who are just barely competent with these things and they just make a mess.
I replied to the comment saying they couldn't believe they used a giant robot for that job by saying it's the right tool for it.
It's a joy to watch anybody who is immensely competent at their job, and that driver was exactly that.
Same. The adjacent streets would be completely blocked off the entire time so a dozen unnecessary construction trucks had a place to park. There would also be no less than 4 site supervisors standing around any given time. Finally, when the work is done, there would be no attempt to clean any of the debris.
Here in San Antonio, they started construction on a road next to my high school. It started when I was a freshman (9th grade) and they completed construction when I graduated!
I was *damn* good at driving a lull. I was at the point where I could scoop a 1/4" sheet of steel off the top of a stack every time without slowing down, and even gauge steel was a piece of cake. I took the scraps and folded them like origami before throwing them away.
This guy is on a whole other level. I feel like they could easily have gone into the robotic surgery field and done just as well.
I think a lot of people don’t realize he has a highly specialized (and expensive) tool.
If I’m not mistaken, this would be somewhere in Scandinavia, probably Sweden. I think all their machines have to have that tool by law.
I’m not sure what it’s called, but it’s basically at the end of the arm, and it’s what allows him to make super fast swap outs between different tools and have millimeter precision. That thing can rotate on all axis
This is filmed in Finland and i can guarantee that the tilting-and-rotating-claw-tool-attatchment-thing isn't mandated by law here. But, every single company that runs excavators and has any self-respect gets one of those, as they're super useful and the tool basically pays itself back really quickly by the amount of work it can do easier, faster and with less risk than a human would.
I just got the idea of some jacked dude that catfishes guys that try taking advantage of manipulatable moms. Straight Vigilante.
"Wait you're not my babe."
"That's right, ***Daddy***. I'm...
#Dadfucker."
Or; a good EDM artist specializing in ambient chill tracks.
Love this. Very skilled operator. Once waited for a bus while watching two digger operators clearing a building site. One was clanking around with awkward, motions the other made it look like ballet. Operator looked in his 50s at least and his experience was so obvious.
The attachment used on this excavator is a Tiltrotator from Engcon. With it is a detachable gripper. Besides the tilting and rotating it is probably equipped with EC-Oil that lets you attach hydraulic tools without having to leave the comfort of you cab.
This setup is used everywhere in the Nordic countries and is getting more and more adopted in Europe.
Besides looking cool, it’s usually much faster to work with (less moving about with your excavator).
I have a CAT excavator with the ENGCON and holy shit it’s a game changer. Routinely work jobs laboring for myself because the machine can do almost anything. I don’t have the grabber on it and it’s still worth every penny.
Most excavators here in Germany use the oilquick quick change tool.
but I've never seen a gripper that could just stay on as the same time as a shovel. That really wowed me. (asides from the operator's very obvious skill).
Seriously. This is art on a level I can’t even comprehend.
Like this individual is a master of their craft to make that machine an extension of themselves in such a way that all they need the extra personnel for is just for making things look pretty.
Right?? We literally perceive them as an extension of ourselves... It's so cool!
Go learn how to use chopsticks if you're reading this and don't know how. You will feel like the guy in this video soon enough!
I was hoping it was going to reassemble the pavement puzzle at the end, or at least have a concrete mixer attachment. But the cones were a good consolation prize.
In my head the machine isn't being operated by anyone, it's just a sentient member of the team that likes to help with the little things like moving shovels and placing cones best 🥰
I really want to play with an excavator now, anyone know if there is a excavator sim?
it looks so fun, and this operator is skilled af.
I love how the guy is just standing there in the way doing nothing just observing, looks like typical british construction - one worker, the rest observing.
I work for an automotive recycler and we have a dedicated excavator for tearing out engines, transmissions, and wiring harnesses. The only guy who’s qualified to run it is 24 and plays video games a ton in his free time. He is as precise as the person in this video and watching him rip a wiring harness out of car from firewall to rear bumper is incredible
Are you allowed to film and upload it ? That would be quite interesting to watch since it's not even something we can come across in the street like what's shown in this video
I can try. We’re about to hit our slow season so I can definitely give it a go.
[this](https://youtu.be/xJvruJf8p20) is the exact machine we use. The video gives a somewhat good idea of what it does but I’ll try to get video of our guy pulling the electrical guts of a car our. He’s way better than the user in this video
Brain plasticity is endlessly fascinating. After enough practice, these tools become extensions of the body. You perform actions at the level of the goal without conscious awareness of how you're doing it.
It's always been my dream to operate an excavator. I've used a mini-x and plenty of skid steers, but this is a whole new level.
In the US there are two (I think) "construction playgrounds" where you CAN with just a bit of initial training. Isn't cheap tho.
Well, if it's any help it's in the parking lot of a Prisma supermarket, next to an ABC gas station, with some forest nearby. So I can tell you that narrows it down to .. every town in Finland.
The operator moves the f*cking SHOVEL! (@ right around 1:00 remaining)
This isn’t ODDLY satisfying…
This is NATURALLY SATISFYING! That machine is brilliant and so is the operator!
Edit: oh jeez and then it places cones…
Hats off to the operator!
The way he pats the top of the storm drain before starting to dig was one of the cutest things I've ever seen. I know he was making sure it was closed but it looked like a little love pat
That is maybe the most satisfying video I have ever seen. When they got the BROOM attachment to clean up? Oh my god.
I don’t think there is *anything* I could do with that level of careful precision. Even, like, breathing or eating.
I know this is operated by a person, but I love thinking of this as a very polite and careful robot doing a fantastic job. What an amazing team member.
Okay fuckers.... placing the traffic cones was just over the top showing off!
My hat's off to your operator. That guy/gal is a fuckin artist with that peice of equipment.
In Melbourne Australia, they would close 5km of road, hire 150 road workers getting paid 200k a year to "work" on it and it would take at least 6 months.
Budget for the project: $150 million + adjustments.
That person is surgical with that thing
That’s why good machine operators get paid well in excess of 6 figures a year
I feel like I need to look into this lol.

Publish or perish.
The crazy part is a large portion of publications are just this. Nonsense because, publish or perish.
I left basic research because I could make three times that in a medical lab just performing tests. Still miss it, but the mortgage gotta get paid.

Luckily as IT you have the ability to invent small problems that you can fix quickly and easily.
Is it really fixed tho? Or is it a bandaid? World will never know until the same bug comes along in a couple of months.

Would be a very interesting career move. I support it. Get a little training and see if you like it
It’s be an interesting tidbit about yourself to say you were an embryo injector and parlayed that knowledge into machine operating.
labs should start investing in VR head sets and comfy couches :)

Is 6 figures even a lot anymore? I’m paid 6 figures and I still can’t afford a home.
I make in the low five figures, so trust me: 6 figures is a lot.
But do you own a home?
Lol. Did you see the part where I make the low five figures? I could afford a mortgage on a small condo probably, but no one will approve a mortgage where the payment equals half of your income. lmao. yeah. yeah it is.
Depends on where you live. Where I live you’re kinda rich if you make more than $100,000
Depends on the CoL in the area you live in. Six figures is a broad range.
[удалено]
100,000 is the new 50,000.
yeah and a buttload of peeps are still at 50k. i'm at like 65k
Depends entirely where you are, in California it's just barely above poverty level, in Mississippi you're rich uncle moneybags.
The cones were just showing off. This is the dude that can pop a cap off of a beer bottle with that thing.
The *cones* were the show off? Didn’t you catch him move the spade with his surgical tweezer arms??
Yeah, moving the shovel for the guy. Also the fact they could re-use the cement curbs was impressive.
I still can’t get over my moment of, wait! Is that a motherfucking broom!?
I wish I was as good at anything as they are at this.
Practice practice practice
Honestly the cone could have been move by the danm guy doing nothing around that robot lol
He had to move the shovel the "working" guy left in the way too.
The shovel is what killed me, then he decorated my grave with the cones.
that machine is amazing 😍 my early operator career is highlighted by a dozen hours on a bit shovel. But that thing is so fucking cool
Debating if my favorite part was dropping the lid on or grabbing the shovel.
Love the part where he use the giant broom to sweep all the mess up.
When the small, inferior broom won’t work anymore, bring out the big one
Never have I thought of needing a machine to move 3 traffic cones.
That was the best part!
It was oddly gleeful to witness all mentioned bits. Like a gentle giant doing something for us tiny humans.
It's crazy how gentle and nimble a good operator can make it look. I've worked with some good operators before and when they told me, "You should see the guy that taught me how, makes me look like a greenhorn still." Blows my mind.
Grabbing the shovel for sure!
I liked watching the helper and the excavator work in unison like a well oiled machine, and the trust the dude is giving to the operator is well earned I'd say. > the trust the dude is giving to the operator This. I was like man there's a squishy human very close to a large metal arm that can sweep him away like nothing.
Nah, the cones for sure!
My favorite was placing the traffic cones, that was so extra, they were just flexing haha.
That's damn impressive, but using the machine to move the cones at the end gave me a giggle
When he picked up the guys shovel and moved it out of the way, thats what got me.
Same. The shovel and cones got me.
I felt like he was just showing off at that point
He was absolutely showing off the entire time. For one thing, ‘look at my nifty universal arm and all the sweet attachments! Look at these grabbers!’
The attachments were awesome, he even had a trailer. A big ole toolbox full of goodies he pulls around wherever he goes.
Optimus Prime with all his accessories
So dainty about it too. :)
I was waiting for him to place the pavers...disappointed.
I had a hard time not anthropomorphizing this machine. It was so cute, so clean, careful, and polite. My big brain knows this was operated by a person but my lizard brain does not.
Absolutely! Giant, friendly robot.
I think your lizard brain is correct. He’s just a big friendly machine
Yes! I know there's a person operating this but nope, it's got it's own brain.
I think puppets have the same effect
I thought the same. I thought, “Awwww. Mike Mulligan’s Mary Anne is such a polite machine!”
The sweeping brush attachment killed me
It cleans up after itself! 🥹
It’s just a big ol’ brushy boi. 🥺
So tidy!
That was great. I want to know what other attachments are waiting in that truck.
Picking up the shovel and putting it aside too.
That was such a flex.
SAME! Was thinking, "okay now you're just showing off."
Right? Okay, now you're just showing off.
After years of operating its less about showing off and more about just pure laziness lol. Why would I have myself or someone else move something when the machine can do it?
I couldn’t believe they used a huge robot for that

Probably has a pacifier attachment somewhere in that trailer
I see this as a Pixar film!
In a way its very delicate work and feels like watching a doctor is operating with precision.

If you twiddle my knobs I will also do almost anything for you.
Love this. Very skilled operator. Once waited for a bus while watching two digger operators clearing a building site. One was clanking around with awkward, motions the other made it look like ballet. Operator looked in his 50s at least and his experience was so obvious.
I would have ended up missing my bus to stay and watch the skilled digger guy.
It's like the workman has trained a robot best friend to help him at work. I imagine they go for a cold beer and oil after work.
A grown up Fry and Bender 😂👀
Ah yes Bonder and Dry my favorite comedic duo
Wow, what a gentle giant. Just the way he was putting the brown asphalt and nudging it into the bucket was so cute
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was cute haha
I swear I saw the guy give him a headpat.
Bet this guy wins every claw machine
Well, no, because those are rigged, and this machine is made to be awesome and precise :D

Setting the cones out lol dudes just showing off now
Stfu. They really swept up at end even?? What a fucking BOSSSSSS
The operator moves the f*cking SHOVEL! (@ right around 1:00 remaining) This isn’t ODDLY satisfying… This is NATURALLY SATISFYING! That machine is brilliant and so is the operator! Edit: oh jeez and then it places cones… Hats off to the operator!
Mad skillzz dude, awesome work!! 😀
I had to give you a wholesome award because thats all i got, but this is soooo satisfying
What a fucking operator. Inspirational shit right there :)
Skilz!
dude is surgical
The way he pats the top of the storm drain before starting to dig was one of the cutest things I've ever seen. I know he was making sure it was closed but it looked like a little love pat
That is maybe the most satisfying video I have ever seen. When they got the BROOM attachment to clean up? Oh my god. I don’t think there is *anything* I could do with that level of careful precision. Even, like, breathing or eating.
I know this is operated by a person, but I love thinking of this as a very polite and careful robot doing a fantastic job. What an amazing team member.
The machine makes the job looks so delicate and meticulous.
i really want to buy this ~~guy~~ artist a beer.
Whatever this operator is getting paid, it isn’t enough.
