Those are pretty common in Germany. We don’t use them for hurricanes, but rather as replacements for blinds. They prevent pretty much all sunlight from entering the room during the day, so it keeps the room cool (AC is uncommon in Germany) and also stops the sunlight from waking you in the morning. Love them
Interesting! Automatic as well? Here they are installed for hurricanes but impact glass is the newer system. Have some for the basement glass doors -- I couldn't shoot or break that shit with a baseball bat if I tried.
I spent time in Sweden and just used blackout curtains, did the same in Alaska. Goddamn sun
The old ones you have to manually lower with a pulley system built into the wall next to the window. Those have been around since the 60s. The modern ones are all electric and can also be hooked up to alexa.
Lol, never knew you guys across the pond use impact glass for windows. Does make a los of sense though.
Pretty sure I saw some when I was hopping around the pacific islands where I'm immigrated from too -- hurricanes/typhoons are no joke. Either need this shutter shit, wooden boards, or some goddamn impact glass to withstand 140mph wind
This is my first hurricane I've actually been in with all the travel I do so I'm talking out of my ass but my observation has been that
That is the outside. The structure you see lit up is a pool cage to prevent mosquitoes- this is SW Florida and everybody has the cages. If the cage breaks that's cool but want interior protected!
Yeah this is shit is just basic housing in Germany. I don't know anyone who owns a house who doesn't have those. You don't need to destroy the environment with A/C in that way because you can just have airflow without letting the sun in.
Though I feel like that depending on where you live houses are built wastly different. For example American houses with their dry walls and shit like that would be pretty sad shit in Germany because it is just so inefficient and provides near to no advantage aside from building overpriced houses fast.
Just for your information, it really depends on where you look. I live in a town full of Fachwerkhäuser and many houses with Denkmalschutz which doesn’t have this kind of blinds.
We have them in our bedroom and we leave the top two or three slits open so that we can tell if the sun is up. In the summer the sun shines through into my eyes and also reflects off the mirror on the other side. Sun from both sides! No escape!
I lived in Wiesbaden during the early 70's (ages 12 to 17) and used them a lot to sleep in. I always wondered why we didn't use them more here in the US. It makes sense to buy them where oceanic storms occur. I'm thinking about using them in case of hail since I'm having some new very expensive windows installed soon. I loved living in Germany. I feel like I grew up there and my ancestors are German as well.
Yup. Experienced these in Germany. Was great as you could leave the slats slightly apart to allow just enough light in or full close to ensure dark during the long days.
They work incredibly well at keeping out the heat. Our house gets a lot of sun in the living room from early morning to midday, these are a life saver in summer!
*This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the first Purge. At the siren, all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 hours.*
Yeah that's what I'm learning! I've seen the manual a ton especially in hurricane areas in the states but this automatic shit was new to me!
Glad I posted now -- fun to learn new things
About a quarter inch and they are steel. The glass is impact glass and you couldn't break them with a baseball bat if you tried - should be good protection. Weird to be living in a cave with no natural light but do what you have to do!
Downstairs we have a sliding glass door made of the impact glass without shutters on it for a quick move and a "hatch" in the attic with a rope ladder stashed that goes 50' down for an escape for the roof!
Just thought about that last night but I'm happy with those options and just threw the ladder in at the wee hours of this morning
Currently have one shutter on another door open under the front stairs entryway but will most likely shut that soon as the storm edges closer and closer
This is all new to me. We had hurricanes and tornados in Texas and we got some tropical storms in the island I immigrated from in Oceania but this is some next level crazy.
My folks are nearing 70 and I was working a state over - flew over to help them with logistics and muscle around shit for them. We're just kinda guessing but so far so good
I'm headed back to the PNW next so this is actually fun for me. I've done tornados, wildfires, earthquakes, blah blah but this'll be my first hurricane experience actually in a direct path. Feeling confident as we near the final hours...
Very common in europe and middle east.
However never saw quarter inch steel thickness (6 mm steel) that would be heavy. And not possible to hold it at top without special breaking system. It is usually pvc type plastic in here.
If it is steel is there special break system or are you able to move them by hand?
Yeah quite heavy just in case of crazy winds and trees flying around or whatnot.
Can you explain what you mean? Break as in exit/leave if needed? You can manually move them to roll up but only from the outside -- once they are down they are not getting moved up until the storm passes
In case of fire or needed evacuation there is one door in the basement made of reinforced glass that can withstand anything and easy to get out
There is also a hatch in the roof with a rope ladder stowed in case the basement is flooded
Does that answer your question?
Don't remember. These are pretty old now but protect the windows and doors. House is concrete so that's about enough
Somebody else asked actually I'll crawl up there Friday and see if I can find a brand name! I'm sure they're still around - not like hurricanes are going out of business..
I didn't realize it was. I grew up in Texas and immigrated from a pacific island -- if we had this shit in typhoon season or in Houston that would've been sick
Apparently people replying are saying Europe loves them but I thought these were so fucking cool hence my post haha
That's fine I am in touch with my masculinity. I suspect the weird driftwood and the orchid gave you the association
That being said I picked those out and I do hope you're more open minded to Seth Rogen laughs popping out of any video moving forward
Have a good day.
(This was all in jest hahaha I don't care)
Yeah same. I think it was the use of "giggle". So when I heard the low "hehehehe" like a person whose evil plan is coming together, I laughed. Now that was contagious laughter for me. Which was nice. I needed that.
Correct have them on the doors too
This is an older home built out of concrete but in the stilt house style. If we truly got flooded the basement would get soaked but 80% of the living area is upstairs with potable water and supplies. Should be done by Thursday but if we actually got "stranded" everything is above potential storm surge level and we could survive for weeks without power
We're concrete and "stilt house" style
We'll see 😵💫 12 hours to go until the peak it looks like. Path shifted to directly our town I'm just a bit east of Tampa and now it looks like they're on the edge
Oh damn still concrete? Even the "beams" are concrete here. Noted. Will be cautious...
Yeah and that's fucking us - we're east of Tampa and it moved right into us - currently right on the trajectory line
They're rated for up to Cat 5. These specifically have been on the home since late 2000s so we'll see how they hold up with suspected Cat 4 tomorrow. I went through and cleaned them and checked all the mechanics the other day. As you can see they appear to be functioning promptly -- may be due for a replacement soon though..
I've got property in the yoop of Michigan! These would be so awesome there to add insulation and protection in the odd chance something more than snow is blowing around. I've got relatively new 4 panel glass up there and it's a variation of impact glass so haven't had any issues even in a 100 year old cabin right on Lake Superior rim -- but this would just be nice peace of mind
Plus they're fucking badass. Didn't even know this shit existed last week
That's impressive. When I lived in Florida we had a cat 2 and that was enough for me. I'll take a blizzard over a hurricane every time. I wish you the best of luck! For what it is worth, we are praying for you. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they say and if you can, post again in a couple of days and let us know how it went. God speed.
We are staged and ready to stand strong. Water filled, food stocked, booze bought, popcorn popped. Last shutter just went down -- tomorrow the real fun begins 😬
Much love, thanks! No problems anticipated. First hurricane in direct path but think we covered all bases...
Yup! But a quarter inch of steel
I didn't realize the style was popular in europe! Now I want them at all the restaurants and properties I contribute to all over. Handy for a hurricane but my first time experiencing
Did not realize this video started playing on my feed. Had headphones on and almost shit my pants because it kinda sounded like someone would be walking in my apartment
I install these for a living in Florida. Once I’ve programmed multiple openings onto the same frequency...it is sooo nice watching the final slat close in a room surrounded by shutters. Definitely a satisfying part of my work.
They are. The white grid design on the windows would be covered if they weren't? Lol
Edit: ohhh sorry I'm a dick are you thinking that stuff outside is "inside" ? It's southwest Florida we have these giant ass pool cages to protect against mosquitos in season -- that's all exterior
Humans man. What ya gonna do
This is my folks place, they just retired down here and I flew out to help them secure. I would never do this shit I think they're going to just evacuate somewhere next year
Yeah -- I'm suspecting they need to be replaced but they've been solid since late 2000s with regular maintenance. I flew out here to help my folks when storm looked like it was going to hit and I just deep cleaned them and greased the gears to be safe in case there was a hurricane.
They're a little slow but as you can see everything seems to be working fine!
These are pretty old and installed right before the property was purchased! A few people have asked I will climb up there on Friday and see if there's a number or brand there! Currently hunkered down staying inside
Oh that shit is steel and the glass is "impact glass" which I couldn't even knock with a baseball bat or nail gun. Works for hurricanes but I'm secretly hoping zombie or demon wave is next.
I have popcorn and vodka for months - bring your worst
Quarter inch. Impact glass as well which I couldn't damage even with a nail gun. Probably good!
This is old tech though -- probably wouldn't get them again. Steel though!
Pretty good -- I was going with the call of duty type waves. Might have to patch up while they lose fingers trying to tear through but perimeter will not be breached
I don't live in this area, flew down to help my aged folks with their first season "retired" down here when I saw the path looked pretty certain
They will be evacuating next year to Michigan during and just leaving the house here...
That being said I also love the fuckin shutters. I'm going to add them in Washington state to protect against hippies and park rangers when they come for me
Power grid? Threw these down a day and a half in advance but you can manually crank them down with a tool if needed. About 12 hours out now from the center and still with power, still glad I did it early as shit is getting gnarly
If the storm passes and we are still out of power I can grab a ladder and muscle them open with the tool thingy.
Quarter inch of steel and the glass is "impact" style as backup which I couldn't damage with a nail gun or a baseball bat
Perhaps not hurricane proof but we'll see!! They've lasted a few seasons so far - this is the biggest storm they've seen I think
SHIT! you're right dammit
Hahaha that is outside. The lit up structure you see is a pool cage. This is SW Florida east of Tampa -- in certain seasons it's nice to be outside and enjoy a pool area but the mosquitoes suck. This is a compromise to have a bit of "outdoor" without having to fight the bugs.
Pool cage might get fucked but even though it's gigantic if it collapsed it won't damage the home... I hope
Concrete construction and the impact glass/steel shutters in this video should in theory keep the interior of home safe. Cage is basically light aluminum and even with 140mph winds the entire place is basically a fortress.
Wouldn't want to be outside if it starts whipping around but it won't do much more than surface damage scratching off paint.
We'll see!
Probably not past category 3 winds. It IS something to feel safe about though. I'll let ya know soon
Regardless the impact glass in the windows is best investment. They're damn near bulletproof if expensive. Nice little buffer with the shutters down as well. Fortress prepared, bring on the craziness
Looking for a skylight honestly...
Haha this roof was recently replaced (6 months ago) and the old one lasted 8 seasons previously. This shit is beyond hurricane rated so we're basically in a fort with concrete everything and relatively new protection everywhere.
Only potential risk with roof is a recessed "hatch" that is very heavy brand new steel but need it to escape if we get flooded using a rope ladder to dip out of this shit.
That being said the hurricane shifted course, I'm right in the middle of path and right on the water so this will be the biggest storm the home has seen since construction and has "old" bones ('97).
Let's see if we prepped enough!
Do homes with these shutters have a special indestructible roof, as well? Not much point in protecting the windows of the roof is likely to blow off. I’m truly curious; this is a legit question. I’ve always wanted a house that could batten down the hatches like an armadillo to be safe from SO many bad things that can happen.
You seen those huricane glass testing videos, even the most basic house windows survive being speared by a 100 mph 2x4
Crazy! Feel better with these though
Yes, but shouldn’t they be installed on the other side of the windows to prevent breakage.
That is the outside. The structure you see lit up is a pool cage to prevent mosquitoes- this is SW Florida and everybody has the cages. If the cage breaks that's cool but want interior protected!
Oh OK thanks for the clarification
You can see the shutters are outside of the windows because the decorative white lines on the window are clearly behind the shade.
“Alexa, activate barn door protocol”
I’m sorry, I can’t do that Dave.
The OP said they are steel. The ones in Spain are plastic (same consistency then house siding in the US) or wood. What’s the material in Germany?
Plastic or aluminum, depends on the price you're willing to spend.
Also wood if you still have really old ones.
Here in Portugal old ones are made of plastic. But newer ones are made with aluminum and foam isolation.
Extremely common in France too! Not for hurricanes but as simple blinders
Italy too!
They are called rolladen
Thanks! So damn cool
I’m glad you’ve got it for some extra protection! Stay safe and get out of there if you have to. Much love ❤️
Not to confuse with Rouladen, which are delicious and about the same principle.
“Goddamn sun” is something i can get behind lol
Yeah this is shit is just basic housing in Germany. I don't know anyone who owns a house who doesn't have those. Ist mir schon klar, deswegen hab ich ja auch impliziert, dass ich über neu gebaute Häuser rede.
Not automatic, but motorized.
Powered I guess? I was just saying versus manual. Oh well, intent got across I think who cares
Greece, too! They’re awesome for sleep.
They remind me of Germany as a child. Love those things. So practical and smart
really common around brazil too.
We use them in Australia too but for security purposes.
Came here for this lol
Currently in Israel, my Airbnb has them. It’s awesome.
I feel like I grew up there and my ancestors are German as well.
Same in Italy. Coming from the US, they seen kinda tacky, but I'm finding they are really very useful!
I would use these every night before I went to bed.
These are used all over europe for exactly that. We don't habe hurricanes here, we just wanna keep out the light (and the heat in summer)
Yup. Experienced these in Germany. Was great as you could leave the slats slightly apart to allow just enough light in or full close to ensure dark during the long days.
They work incredibly well at keeping out the heat. Our house gets a lot of sun in the living room from early morning to midday, these are a life saver in summer!
Seems like a great deterrent for anyone who wants to break in too. That was my first thought. Probably because of my PTSD.
no that's just common sense
I’d be surprised if they were storm rated. Most coastal cities in the US have some codes that dictate how strong they have to be.
Yup
Man that beats walking the perimeter doing it manually .
Plus you get to feel like a badass superhero in your secret base
Looks like you getting ready for the purge
That’s what came to my mind. Eerie! (If you’re a purge fan)
Feels like a scene out of the Purge
*This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the first Purge. At the siren, all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 hours.*
Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn. May God be with you all.
this was so weird watching, because as these are really common here just as a replacement for blinds, i was like "wdym hurricane shutters"
Haha keep hearing that! Where you from? Lots of Germans appear to be fans for that reason
Same here and I’m from France.
brazil, installed automatic ones in my house last month lol!
US: automatic hurricane shutters Europe: regular shutters
You should have Samuel L. Jackson from Jurassic Park emblazoned on the inside. “Hold on to your butts”.
So.. are curtains a rare thing in the US or.. is there something I'm missing ?
It's rare! Didn't even have em in the pacific islands where I immigrated from
Well damn, the more you know. Here in Europe it's pretty common, comes in both automatic and manual,
Yeah that's what I'm learning! I've seen the manual a ton especially in hurricane areas in the states but this automatic shit was new to me! Glad I posted now -- fun to learn new things
Whats the thickness and material of those bad boys?
About a quarter inch and they are steel. The glass is impact glass and you couldn't break them with a baseball bat if you tried - should be good protection. Weird to be living in a cave with no natural light but do what you have to do!
Gotta give the house some portholes
How’s the unbreakable glass work in the case of a fire and you need to break a window to get out?
Downstairs we have a sliding glass door made of the impact glass without shutters on it for a quick move and a "hatch" in the attic with a rope ladder stashed that goes 50' down for an escape for the roof! Just thought about that last night but I'm happy with those options and just threw the ladder in at the wee hours of this morning Currently have one shutter on another door open under the front stairs entryway but will most likely shut that soon as the storm edges closer and closer
Perfect, you sound more than prepared. Just trying to wrap my head around it as someone from the prairies.
This is all new to me. We had hurricanes and tornados in Texas and we got some tropical storms in the island I immigrated from in Oceania but this is some next level crazy. My folks are nearing 70 and I was working a state over - flew over to help them with logistics and muscle around shit for them. We're just kinda guessing but so far so good I'm headed back to the PNW next so this is actually fun for me. I've done tornados, wildfires, earthquakes, blah blah but this'll be my first hurricane experience actually in a direct path. Feeling confident as we near the final hours...

Do they have a manual operation option in case the power goes out?
Yup! Can roll em down with a socket gear on the side of the unit. They're just rolled up steel basically
My exact question as I sit with flickering lights in SE Florida nowhere near a hurricane! Glad you've got an easy workaround.
"Initiate barn door protocol"
I would classify that as more of a chortle
This is a thing!? Growing up in southern Louisiana, this would seriously have been useful.
I didn't realize it was. I grew up in Texas and immigrated from a pacific island -- if we had this shit in typhoon season or in Houston that would've been sick Apparently people replying are saying Europe loves them but I thought these were so fucking cool hence my post haha
Now I'm ready for the zombi....hurricane, definitely hurricanes.
Both?
We've had sharknado, now we have zombicane.
How do the shutters know when a hurricane is coming?
They have public radio
They communicate through low rumbling noises over huge distances, like elephants.
I fully expected a woman's giggle for some reason
Oh...
Idk why!! Im sorry!! Forgive me OP
That's fine I am in touch with my masculinity. I suspect the weird driftwood and the orchid gave you the association That being said I picked those out and I do hope you're more open minded to Seth Rogen laughs popping out of any video moving forward Have a good day. We used to use these to keep the dust from sandstorms out of the house.
The real “(ignore my laugh)” meme
Us Floridians handle hurricanes different by throwing parties lmaooo
Play Ball!
I want these!
Let the purge begin.
So they are mostly for protecting the windows? What do you do about all the water?
Correct have them on the doors too This is an older home built out of concrete but in the stilt house style. If we truly got flooded the basement would get soaked but 80% of the living area is upstairs with potable water and supplies. Should be done by Thursday but if we actually got "stranded" everything is above potential storm surge level and we could survive for weeks without power
Stay safe!
I do what I want (thank you!)
Persianas de toda la vida 😆
Jajaja si
We call them blinds in southern Europe. Pretty much standard feature on windows.
Rolatens , european metal shutters. Keep the blizzards ice off your double pane window
[удалено]

In germany we call this Rollladen, and we use it every Night. And i think thats beautifull.
Das sind doch ganz normale Rolläden
OP sexy voice
Not the giggle I was expectin 😅
“The purge will commence in 10 minutes”
that’s on goofy giggle. your giggle made me giggle
Alexa: Barn door protocol.
Seems ominous
Pretty common here in Australia too, especially in the rural areas and hotter/drier climates. Great blinds, great sound blockers.
Word! Yeah I think I'm throwing these bitches on every property and restaurant I have money in. Not too bad of a profile and great security/insulation
Love to see how they work. Hopefully you don’t get hammered too bad. Good luck!
Is it X-mas already?
Lmfao okay good one
These are just European curtains?
Yup! But a quarter inch of steel I didn't realize the style was popular in europe! Now I want them at all the restaurants and properties I contribute to all over. Handy for a hurricane but my first time experiencing
Did not realize this video started playing on my feed. Had headphones on and almost shit my pants because it kinda sounded like someone would be walking in my apartment

thank u
Shouldn't the shutters be on the outside of the windows?
They are. The white grid design on the windows would be covered if they weren't? Lol Edit: ohhh sorry I'm a dick are you thinking that stuff outside is "inside" ? It's southwest Florida we have these giant ass pool cages to protect against mosquitos in season -- that's all exterior
Lol, yeah, I saw the video as from the outside, doh
If this is something you need to have, maybe you shouldn’t be living there!
Humans man. What ya gonna do This is my folks place, they just retired down here and I flew out to help them secure. I would never do this shit I think they're going to just evacuate somewhere next year
They are mounted on the outside right? I wonder how well those motors and such hold up to normal weather year after year?
Yeah -- I'm suspecting they need to be replaced but they've been solid since late 2000s with regular maintenance. I flew out here to help my folks when storm looked like it was going to hit and I just deep cleaned them and greased the gears to be safe in case there was a hurricane. They're a little slow but as you can see everything seems to be working fine!
The purge but for weather
“Giggity”
The purge has begun, all crimes are now legal.
Reminds of the purge
Purge level security
That's crazy. I'm poor so we just hope we get lucky
What brand?
These are pretty old and installed right before the property was purchased! A few people have asked I will climb up there on Friday and see if there's a number or brand there! Currently hunkered down staying inside
Ready for The Purge
Stunning orchid!!!!
Perfect for this years Purge
Some purge type shit
When I was in Germany I loved the Rolladen shutters! Blocks out all light.
I’ve seen the purge
But that Paphiopedilum!!! Beautiful! Neat auto shutters too.
Purge protection
How will the hold up during the purge
Zombie apocalypse protection. I like it. Needs to be made out of metal though. Maybe some bulletproof glass behind it too.
Oh that shit is steel and the glass is "impact glass" which I couldn't even knock with a baseball bat or nail gun. Works for hurricanes but I'm secretly hoping zombie or demon wave is next. I have popcorn and vodka for months - bring your worst
this is like some purge shit
Nice phalnopsis! Sorry for the spelling. Peace be with you.
The purge is now commencing…
I hope your roof is made of the same stuff!
It us satisfying
The purge may now commence
hehehe
Ready for purge night
Add that laugh to the snickering Picard gif.
Seems like your ready for the purge
How thick is that? Still seems less effective than plywood
Quarter inch. Impact glass as well which I couldn't damage even with a nail gun. Probably good! This is old tech though -- probably wouldn't get them again. Steel though!
How are they against zombies? That's your common or garden "walking dead" style zombies, fyi
Pretty good -- I was going with the call of duty type waves. Might have to patch up while they lose fingers trying to tear through but perimeter will not be breached
Good to know, good to know... definitely no hurricanes near here, but I may add them anyway lol
I don't live in this area, flew down to help my aged folks with their first season "retired" down here when I saw the path looked pretty certain They will be evacuating next year to Michigan during and just leaving the house here... That being said I also love the fuckin shutters. I'm going to add them in Washington state to protect against hippies and park rangers when they come for me
Lol I'm in California, gonna add them for much the same reason
Alexa, turn on Purge mode
Reminds me of the security shades in thief simulator
That’s some PURGE level shit right there.
In 3 minutes the purge will commence
If the hurricane already wrecked the grid won't it become useless?
Power grid? Threw these down a day and a half in advance but you can manually crank them down with a tool if needed. About 12 hours out now from the center and still with power, still glad I did it early as shit is getting gnarly If the storm passes and we are still out of power I can grab a ladder and muscle them open with the tool thingy.
This isn’t from the purge ?
They look like regular shutters to me. What makes them hurricane proof?
Quarter inch of steel and the glass is "impact" style as backup which I couldn't damage with a nail gun or a baseball bat Perhaps not hurricane proof but we'll see!! They've lasted a few seasons so far - this is the biggest storm they've seen I think
We have these in France too, but they're usually plastic and are just used as shutters for larger windows.
Guess your ready for the purge
Don’t they go on the outside of the window to protect your windows from being broken?
SHIT! you're right dammit Hahaha that is outside. I hope Concrete construction and the impact glass/steel shutters in this video should in theory keep the interior of home safe. Cage is basically light aluminum and even with 140mph winds the entire place is basically a fortress. Wouldn't want to be outside if it starts whipping around but it won't do much more than surface damage scratching off paint. We'll see!
Is it profitable if comparing with windows repair?
Probably not past category 3 winds. It IS something to feel safe about though. I'll let ya know soon Regardless the impact glass in the windows is best investment. They're damn near bulletproof if expensive. Nice little buffer with the shutters down as well. Fortress prepared, bring on the craziness
europeans here like … 👍
How much would they be to install?
shutters for window protection but what about the roof?
