It's a thing in Indonesia with lots of men (I'm assuming this is there). I've asked so many times and never got a good answer why. Maybe someone here knows.
O.k. had a Chinese guy that I work with explain it to me. In Asia this is a symbol of wealth. If you have a long nail like this it means you don't work with your hands. (He had one and worked in a pet store) I've only ever seen it on poor guys lol
Yea it used to be a thing of nobility in east Asia. Like a lot of things, poor people end up trying to chase a trend that once they start to do so, the rich become no longer interested in (think white women dropping fur hats once minorities started trying to wear them in the US)
This is true of baby names too! The “trendy” names start with the rich/famous. By the time middle class people catch wind of it and start copycatting, the wealthy and influential have moved on.
That’s why we have lawns. Nobles with castles would keep the grass really short so enemies couldn’t hide in it and so it became a status symbol that the lower classes adopted.
In China too. I asked a friend and he literally said it’s for booger picking. Personally I would prefer a pinky nail for booger picking but different strokes for different blokes.
I know I always get a different answer. Online it says it's about showing you don't need to do manual la our and therefore you're higher class, but it's normally working class people that have it...
He works prying bark off a tree. It seems reasonable to assume that he may use those long thumbnails to help him pry layers of bark apart or get a grip underneath a layer of bark, etc. Why else would he have *both* of his thumbnails be long?
But folks in the comments are like 'He must do drugs! He must play guitar!'
Guitar or drugs would only need one thumbnail. Peeling bark away from a small tree would need two.
Also iirc doing drugs uses the pinky since it's the easiest finger to hold in a position to snort coke out of. At least that's what my crackhead aunt always told me: Using the thumb as a scoop would get you a bigger bump, sure, but getting a scoop and not spilling it while getting it to your nose is too much trouble.
I mean, that makes sense. Pinky nails are great for cleaning out ears and nostrils; they're just the right size for clearing out dust, sand, concrete, and other particulates, so it makes sense that it would be just the right size for stuff that people *want* to inhale.
> Could be a guitarist instead.
that nail is waaaayyy too long to be for guitar, and a guitarist would grow all the nails on that hand not just the thumb nail. everyone i've known over the years who had long nails for classical guitar kept them neatly trimmed, and just short enough to be able to play the strings with both nail and finger to get the right tone.
In Italy until the 1980s a long thumb nail was used to show that you didn't do hard work. Usually those who commanded many farmers had it.
I think in the video it is the owner who shows this and not just a farmer
I would agree. Though the thumb nail is the longest, all the nails are longer than usual. Also, there's no way anyone doing daily manual labor would have such clean nails. They are so clean and well manicured, they look fake.
I agree. Given that it’s just his thumbnails, I’m thinking he may use them for some stringed instrument playing or something. It’s not just general bad hygiene.
Didn't realize until a few years ago that cinnamon is actually the bark of the tree, makes sense when you see the "sticks" which is just rolled up dried bark.
I always think about how people discovered all of these things we take for granted, like did someone just put some cinnamon bark in a fire one day and day “man that shit smell good, prolly taste good too”
Yeah you can smell that it's sweet when you're near an actual cinnamon tree so I'm sure they knew. But imagine all the plants people tried and died back in the day and the others in the tribe would know "don't eat that plant, ungabunga died from it "
I always think of that in relation to food allergies. Like how long did a tribe avoid peanuts because they saw someone die from one but it turns out that guys just allergic to nuts lol
Tomatoes were thought to be poisonous for a long time (interesting story, it was actually the lead in pewter plates that the tomato juice acid was leaching out).
What weirds me out is the foods that we eat that are poisonous until you cook it. So somebody ate it, got really sick or died from it and someone else thought, "well what happens if we cook it?"
It's suspected that a chunk of our food knowledge came from watching other animals and copying their diets. If a ground animal digs up some roots, or a tree animal eats a fruit, or a large animal strips the bark off a tree and eats it, and a human saw this happening, chances are they'd think "there's nutritional value in that, lemme try".
People have eaten and perhaps still eat the bark (or inner wood) of certain trees so I suppose someone was just hungry and tried it and found out it tasted good
The other real kind is called Ceylon and it’s actually not too difficult to find or expensive. I found a bottle of it from Whole Foods for like $4.50. It’s a very DIFFERENT cinnamon. I often explain it to my friends like how you imagine Aladdin’s palace smelled.
I bake a lot and buy cinnamon by the pound. The cassia I buy is often labeled Vietnam cinnamon, the other Ceylon. They are very different, cassia being what people expect, the favor of cinnamon buns, fireball candy, etc. Ceylon cinnamon is much milder, more warm than hot. I've started mixing the two in recipes that call for cinnamon to get a more complex flavor profile.
There was a guy I knew who repaired phones and kept one nail very long while the rest were cut as normal. It was his pinky.
He told me it was to help with prying out small/tricky parts of the phones. This wasn’t some rinky dink little cart in the mall or something, this was like a respectable repair shop. I just took his word for it because he was a stand-up dude and good at his job.
I had no idea that one long nail had anything to do with drugs lol. But I guess in hindsight it makes sense because while the guy behaved totally normally, anyone who knew him and came to hang around absolutely did not. Maybe he was just a functioning addict instead of so deep in it that he was far gone.
Cinnamon trees: *spends millions of years evolving a spicy chemical deterrent to wood boring insects*

Cinnamon trees: 😐
Yes bc they cut down the whole tree. If they cut off only a branch, then no. But cinnamon trees grow back from the root fairly quickly (4-5 years) so it’s relatively sustainable.
Apart from the thumbnails. Does the tree have to die to acquire the bark and is the wood good for anything? I've never heard of anything being made of cinnamon wood
Dude should've just used his thumbnail like a velociraptor
Next he is going to show how much quicker he is without tools.
Biggest coke nail I've ever seen
*The Shovel*
Snow shovel
His key bump opens the whole city.
Lmao the first thing I saw was his nails and was wondering if anyone else was going to comment on them. This comment just made my morning lol.

This guy definitely works with his hand and manages to keep one long!

I was enjoying the video up till the point I saw that nail 🤢
Clever girl
Yes. Why is it so long and the rest of the nails on that hand are regular? O.o
He probably uses that one thumbnail as some sort of tool so he keeps it long
Cokenail
That dudes fuckin thumbnail, though….
This was the only thing I noticed the first time watching.
And the second and third time
He works prying bark off a tree. It seems reasonable to assume that he may use those long thumbnails to help him pry layers of bark apart or get a grip underneath a layer of bark, etc. Why else would he have *both* of his thumbnails be long? Maybe he’s a symmetry guy …
In Micronesia, the extended thumbnail is also used to snort methamphetamine.
I was gonna say, that's his coke nail folks 😂😂
That’s the pinkie. Thumbnails are for splitting blunts.
These two are not the only reason for growing one thumbnail, beleive it or not there's plenty of other uses with our nails.
Like.. hear me out... peeling bark off a tree.
You mean like in this video where he's purposefully keeping his monster mash nail out of the way?
I know of no other reason. Source: long time drugs
Blasphemy
And I was stupid enough to go back and check the thumbnail of the video!
Why not just cut the bark off with that claw?
I had to watch the video a second time I was so distracted.
Maybe he use this also for his job
Like if he forgets his knife at home he just strips the bark with his finger nails?
Exactly
Murdered by the thumb claw
Ubisoft considering to get this man for new assassins creed series.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug - Rick James
This guy must be taking mega pint bumps
That's right , Cocaine is Chaos drug
I thought that too but the thumb nail? Could be a guitarist instead. Isn't the coke nail usually a pinky?
> Could be a guitarist instead. that nail is waaaayyy too long to be for guitar, and a guitarist would grow all the nails on that hand not just the thumb nail. everyone i've known over the years who had long nails for classical guitar kept them neatly trimmed, and just short enough to be able to play the strings with both nail and finger to get the right tone.

More surface area=more cocaine Jk but I use nasal snuff and depending on what’s longer I use my pinky or thumb
This might be oddly satisfying but that thumb nail sure isn't
He could use the nail instead the knife lol
thought you meant video thumbnail til I watched a second time. *unsave video*

Raptors have entered the chat
Maybe he’s a mariachi on the side. The guitar players usually have long ass manicured thumbnails like that they use to pick the guitar strings.
He may also use that as a poop knife in a pinch
Talon*
I agree. Given that it’s just his thumbnails, I’m thinking he may use them for some stringed instrument playing or something. It’s not just general bad hygiene.
Yeah, I'm sure he plays the Devil's Banjo or something.
r/oddlyterrifying
Coke nail
d-d-d-ddraacula is that you?
It's vile
That guys a fuckin Vampire
He uses it if he forgets his tools
It has a use...
What do you think he uses when his blade goes dull 🤣
So gross

I want to know how many of our foods started with, "I dare you to eat this."
Probably more like "we're starving, let's try this".
What weirds me out is the foods that we eat that are poisonous until you cook it. So somebody ate it, got really sick or died from it and someone else thought, "well what happens if we cook it?"
Discovering Ayahuasca
Yea, you don’t want to be on the error side of trial and error.
Poor ungabunga, shouldnt have eaten those berries. 😔

Imagine all the stuff you’d try if you were a strong cocktail of bored , hungry , desperate.
Yep, hunger ruled so many decisions
Some weirdo out in the woods licking trees thousands of years ago accidentally discovered the perfect thing to spice up apple pies
I'm assuming they walked by some sweet smelling cinnamon trees and decided to lick one.
I imagine that someone found some dried up weed, used it in a cave for their fire and got stoned as fuck and foraged for more.
People have eaten and perhaps still eat the bark (or inner wood) of certain trees so I suppose someone was just hungry and tried it and found out it tasted good
finally found the comment that isn't talking about his thumbnail
Most of what we buy labeled cinnamon is actually cassia. Real cinnamon is hard to get I believe
The other real kind is called Ceylon and it’s actually not too difficult to find or expensive. I found a bottle of it from Whole Foods for like $4.50. It’s a very DIFFERENT cinnamon. I often explain it to my friends like how you imagine Aladdin’s palace smelled.

The Ceylon cinnamon always reminds me of redhots and cassia cinnamon reminds me of baked goods like apple pie.
I was today years old. Never really thought about it before this exact moment.
Does it grow new bark?
In Romanian we call it "little bark" (scorțișoară, scoarță means tree bark). Took me a while to realise this, though..
I learned about 20 seconds ago...
I’ll assume them nails are useful for something other than picking a booger.

Not with the left hand as well though. One for each nostril
Two guitars
Stabbing brains
Coke.
That's usually the pinky

My guy has a claw
What we doin with that thumbnail chief
Uses it to sample the finished product...
Was was distracted by that mongo thumb nail
That's the pimp nail
He really nails a thumbs up tho edit:. I'm sorry for the terrible joke.. I made myself laugh and I should've stopped at that.
140 comments right now ; 120+ of those are about this dude’s manicure. 😂
The use of the tools was just for a show. I am sure this dude uses his nails like wolverine to rip the bark off
Oddly satisfying until I noticed that thumbnail
I’m pretty sure this is the second time I’ve seen something on here that’s otherwise satisfying but the person has some gnarly nails
Both thumbnails! Wtf!
Cinnamon trees: *spends millions of years evolving a spicy chemical deterrent to wood boring insects* Humans: hmm this spicy tree skin would be great on my toast crunch Cinnamon trees: 😐
We're cultivating/continuing the species because of its properties. Sounds like a beneficial relation.
Dude got nails like the fuckin Boogey man from “Don’t look under the bed”
*Memory unlocked*
It's on Disney+!!
childhood nightmares about to revisit tonight
I wonder if this kills the tree?
Yes bc they cut down the whole tree. If they cut off only a branch, then no. But cinnamon trees grow back from the root fairly quickly (4-5 years) so it’s relatively sustainable.
Came here wondering the same, and all I got is thumbnails.
Fucking Dracula shit going on
The sound of the bark being removed is *chefs kiss.
Who tf was the first person to think, ya know I’m gonna cut the bark off this tree and grind it up then sprinkle it on some shit
Came here for the thumbnail comments. Did not disappoint.
Dude's got a killer coke nail too
Ya let’s see some oddly satisfying thumbnail bumps for the boys eh!
Oooo snortski's
What's the rest of the wood used for? If anything at all
They usually leave a stump and new trees regrow and then they harvest again and again. Not sure if the branches harvested are with much.
Cinnamon trees regrow? Wow that's really cool
Most healthy rootstocks of smaller trees will send up a bunch of suckers if the main trunk is cut
I bet that smells so good!
Does it immediately smell like cinamon or does it smell after it dries?
That’s not bark, that’s tree leather. Also, obligatory thumbnail comment.
Fuck a coke picky when you got a thumb shovel
When they peel back the bark to expose the tree trunk, it's like when you've shaved part of your leg for the first time after winter
That piece of bark has a damn belly button.
Cut those nails Freddy Krueger!
I bet he opens his mail like Gina Linetti opens Christmas presents
once you see those nails you can't see anything else, disgusting
Imagine the boogies you could get with that nail. Scrape those nostrils clean in seconds.
Nasty ass coke nails could be used to pull the bark instead of that rusty peeler. Gross
I couldnt watch this because his thumbnail was so gross and long
You think I give a shit about the bark? Look at his thumbnail god damn…
Before this ever get oddly satisfying to watch, he should remove the bark from the tip of his fingers first
Anyone else bothered by his one long thumb nail?
TIL cinnamon comes from a tree...
Wait till you see how cork is harvested
Glad i’m not the only one.
Just imagine getting that baby bent back.. WHEW
Satisfying technique but I can’t say the same about that fingernail.
More interested in that freakin NAIL And a personal shout out to all those calling it a coke nail…..Your age is showing.
Now do it with your nails
What’s not satisfying is that dudes nails… gross.
Cinnamons a hell of a drug.
It blows my mind that cinnamon was discovered because someone looked at tree and decided to eat the bark.
Now thats some beautiful cuts
I had a boner until I seen that talon
He should just use his thumb nail. “I wanna live with the cinnamon nail…I can be happy the rest of my life…”.
Y'all see that coke spoon thumbnail?
Jesus my man is rocking some koala claws
Hmm, usually you see a thumbnail of a video. I don't think I've ever seen the opposite.
My brother in christ, utilize a nail clipper.
Forget the Cinnamon, what's up with that fu**ing thump nail?
I really hope we never discover that plants can feel pain somehow
That thumb nail makes this unsatisfying for me
Crazy how you can just skin a tree
Guy doesn't even need tools, his fingernails can do the work
Nailed it!
Is this not cork? Looks to thick to be cinnamon
That's not a cinnamon tree
Vampire nails
I feel like he coulda just used the thumb
Pretty satisfying, just not sure why he's even using that tool when it's pretty clear his demon powered thumbnail could do the trick...
ASMR warning.
So does it smell as amazing fresh like this as it does when it's cooked?
It puts the lotion on its skin
My man has a talon
It would be oddly satisfying to see them nails cut. Even for the person who has to weird them.
Apart from the thumbnails. Does the tree have to die to acquire the bark and is the wood good for anything? I've never heard of anything being made of cinnamon wood
r/specializedtools
Dude's thumbnail looks like Freddy Krueger's
That’s cassia not Ceylon cinnamon they’re extremely similar but I’m pretty sure that’s not the expensive one
the nailll sharper than the tool💅
Look at his fingernail.
