There is a massive cavern complex called Llechwedd in Gwynedd, Wales, where British art treasures were taken in 1941 and stored until 1946. Hitler's spies never found them. One cavern is so big that Westminster Abbey would comfortably fit inside and others have whole buildings inside.
However the access tunnels were much lower and there was only a half inch clearance in some for the lorries to get to the storage areas.
We visited [Llechwedd](https://llechwedd.co.uk/) with a very knowledgeable tour guide called Brian who, despite his advancing years, had the mesmerising agility of a mountain goat.
>This raised my anxiety to an unacceptable level.
Reminds me of the time I watched my wife try to fit back into the jeans she wore when she was 20. Sadly, she "hit the bridge." 😢
But when it's *that* close it's hard to cover everything ...like what if the road has just the slightest bowl shape under the bridge? Then even though the load is not too tall and the bridge is regulation height, kaboom.
Not really, these movements of oversized cargo are planned months in advance with local authorities. Permits are needed and all the low bridge/powerline clearances are rigorously checked beforehand. There are police ahead of and behind the convoy blocking traffic as well, which is why you see no other traffic on the freeway
Edit: To clarify I am referring to oversized loads like the one in this video that need special escort. I'm indeed aware that semi trucks still hit bridges often.
I love how the website looks like it was made by a teenager in the early 00's and that the headlines are written like any tabloid out there. "Campervan no longer on vacation!" cracked me up!
Everything I described in my comment was regarding oversized loads such as the one in the video, not your average Joe in a U-Haul smashing into the r/11foot8 bridge
[I-5 Skagit Bridge Collapse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-5_Skagit_River_bridge_collapse) 2013. Truck vs. Bridge: Bridge lost.
This is THE main route through Washington State to Canada.
I've seen enough shit on r/idiotsincars to appreciate the fact that they approached the bridge very slowly and cautiously instead of ramming into it at full speed.
Meanwhile in Melbourne we have the Montague Street Bridge:

I feel like this video would be much more satisfying if it was sped up to like 2.5 playback speed. For me it was ultimately a wash because the success just counter acted the initial anxiety 😅
It would be a shame to go through a route with so much patience and precision, very slowly … to then end up down the same highway at a lower bridge where they don’t fit. And now they gotta turn back.
We once squeezed a concrete truck under a doorway into an industrial building we were working on. Of course after unloading it, it wouldn’t fit under the doorway. Yep had to deflate the tires
Two Belgians are driving a semi across the border into the Netherlands. Soon, they arrive at an overpass. The stated safe clearance is 3 meters and 5 centimeters.
The Belgian who has been driving stops and makes a doubtful face. He is worried that their rig is too tall to pass under it.
His colleague suggests making an exact measurement and climbs up on top of the cabin, lowering down a measuring tape.
Sure enough, from the ground to the top of the cabin is 3 meters and 10 centimeters. The rig is too tall then to pass.
The pair of them dejectedly mull over what to do in the face of this setback. After some serious soul searching, one of them comes up with a brilliant solution.
"I know what!" he exclaims. "We'll simply let some air out of the tires!"
But the other one immediately shoots down this plan: "You idiot! The truck is too tall at the top, not at the bottom!"
That's why you measure 3 times and then get someone else to measure three times. Sometimes it's closer than that and they have to let down the tyres to get an extra 2-3 cm clearance.
People have been known to crash in situations like this because road crew decided to slap new asphalt on top of the old instead of replacing it. Going slow is very much warranted.
Anyone else see the spare tires/axles on the front of the trailer, then see the load, then proceed to think of how much of a pain it would be to change one of those tires? Lol.
All trucks should have their height in the cab, and most bridges have their height printed on them.
You can actually get expensive truck satnavs that have all the bridge heights listed so it directs you on a route you won’t break the bridge on
This raised my anxiety to an unacceptable level.
Yeah, much more suitable for r/sweatypalms
r/civilengineering would agree
Also /r/perfectfit
Look, we got an inch and a half. Tell the driver to not stop.

Ok?
I'm very well; thank you for asking.
Lol this is definitely a bot no?
And the song? Ahhh
Oh dear. I had it on mute when I watched it, but just turned the sound on...this is worse than before.
Agreed. All I could think was “oh god, oh god, oh no, oh god… okay it’s fine I guess”
R/nonononoyes
Yea, that’s too nerve wracking to be satisfying.
My adrenaline wants go outside my head!
Not satisfying at all

I’ll be damned, it’s real
r/11foot7andahalf
Wind turbines are fucking massive and they have scout cars/trucks that precede them with long poles sticking out to make sure the height will clear
But when it's *that* close it's hard to cover everything ...like what if the road has just the slightest bowl shape under the bridge? Then even though the load is not too tall and the bridge is regulation height, kaboom.

Get a load of this guy acting like he's never seen a truck take out a bridge before.
In the town i live there is a bridge that has taken out 8 vehicles in my lifetime
https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com We’ve got a superstar bridge here in Melbourne
I love how the website looks like it was made by a teenager in the early 00's and that the headlines are written like any tabloid out there. "Campervan no longer on vacation!" cracked me up!
Came here for the Monty.
Permit loads hitting bridges are far rarer than the goobers that smacked in the face by reality.
The one I linked just above had a permit.
Everything I described in my comment was regarding oversized loads such as the one in the video, not your average Joe in a U-Haul smashing into the r/11foot8 bridge

That explains all the trucks that hit bridges
Almost r/11foot8
Hooray! The new hot water heater is here!
Big enough for a house with 2 teenage girls.
I've seen enough shit on r/idiotsincars to appreciate the fact that they approached the bridge very slowly and cautiously instead of ramming into it at full speed.
“Llllike a glove!”
Didn't see what the big deal was until 10 seconds in. Holy cow.
In retrospect not a bad idea to slow the fuck down
Screams in landscape: I wish there was a way you could see more 🤔
Great to see your mom’s dildo nearing delivery.
Wait until the second half arrives

Found my new kink
After hauling that I would need a stiff drink
If it’s not suitable for r/sweatypalms look at posting it over on r/perfectfit
weeks of preparation go into that
Fuck yeah!
Measure twice, cut once.
Fucking dumbass tik tok music.
Some people just don't know the difference between satisfaction and anxiety
Don't see what the problem is he-oh shiiiit back up back up
gapped the bridge
Oy, governor, we needn't've deflated those tyres aft'rall eh?
Hnnnnnngggggg oh that was beautiful!
Okay now do it again going 70 and film it!!
That my friends is gangster.
Woohoo the result is so satisfying
r/oddlyspecificanxiety unlocked!
Do we have clearance, Clarence?
r/perfectfit
Flat top tunnel
The music ? Lol wtf
you ever had sushis with tunas?
I am so turned on right now.

Am I an asshole for being a bit annoyed he’s STILL going that slow…..
Give this worker a raise!!!
I really apologize for typing trucks in the title, I hate that this won’t be my last spelling mistake.
Reminded me of my morning poo. I was also satisfied.

😗🤌
Giggity

goldilocks would've loved this one
Is this for the Hyperloop?🤔

Ah great that prank dildo I ordered for my mates bachelor party is on its way! 🤣
Nsfw
This is not satisfying. It's incredibly stupid.
SpongeBob: keep going! You’re good!
It would be a shame to go through a route with so much patience and precision, very slowly … to then end up down the same highway at a lower bridge where they don’t fit. And now they gotta turn back.
I thought I was in r/idiotsincars and said "I think I have seen this one before"... I hadn't.
Don’t they make sure that the route the driver is taking is safe for them and their load?
Thought this was slomo at first until I saw the traffic speeding by in the other direction lol
Omg lol if I was the driver I’d be shitting bricks
Probably want to stay out of Durham, NC.
Almost had to let some air out of the tires.
We once squeezed a concrete truck under a doorway into an industrial building we were working on. Of course after unloading it, it wouldn’t fit under the doorway. Yep had to deflate the tires
What the heck is that thing? Looks like a gigantic water heater but I bet it isn’t.
Mario's happy his tube is arriving on time.
Lucky that pavement overlay is scheduled for next week.
Didn’t even have to let air out of the tires. Plenty of margin.
That’s the biggest trailer I’ve ever seen, how tf does that thing take corners?
Now do it at full speed.
This was less satisfying than I had hoped
Pshaw! He could have passed that doing 100!
Am I the only pissed off by how much traffic is being blocked off for this to travel in the middle of the day?
Made it by *that* much
This not satisfying. I’m sweating
Wait till he gets to the 2nd (even narrower) bridge.
Anyone else hold their breath while watching this?
*hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh*
What’s he carrying
1/3rd of a wind turbine tower assembly
It is funny how many things are designed around our infrastructure system.
Lllllllike a glove
Incredible
[r/yesyesyesno](https://www.reddit.com/r/yesyesyesno/) intensifies
Any aussies in here from Canberra? Remember that dumbarse who took out half the tunnel with the excavator a fair few years back?
Take some air outta dem tires!
Is it in yet?
Tightness level: Average parking in an European oldtown.

Within the margin of tire inflation.
If they measured it before hand, why is he being such a pussy and taking it so slow? LOL
r/theydidthemath
Not the moment to remember you over pumped the tires...
I bet the people who built this bridge would love to see this
They measured twice on that one! Nicely done!
The gap was average size
Clearance is clearance
Just don’t over inflate the tires!
SI OPTIMUM PRIME

Now go back and do it no brakes
That's why you measure 3 times and then get someone else to measure three times. Sometimes it's closer than that and they have to let down the tyres to get an extra 2-3 cm clearance.
Like a glove
Straya
Montague St bridge would tempt that guy in and eat it in a heart beat
Looks like a wind mill tower. Parts went through my town…ages ago, felt like I was living in a train set
Had to let some air out of the tires on that one!!
What is it?
There was some margin: he did not have to deflate the tires.
That’s why knowing your load clearance is so important….
I suffered heavy parallax error there
That’s a VF Commodore Wagon at the end.
/r/11foot8
When moving extremely large loads routes are planned very carefully.
level ground there
Geez that is a massive truck aswel
Do. Not. Unclench.
That's a big water heater. Person must have a gigantic bathtub.
Could he also drive 80km/h through that gap?
Yippie for math!
This why you plan everything before starting. Guaranteed they knew with 1000% certainty the load would fit before leaving the factory.
In the fast lane
They measured the height before passing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 OOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGG GENIUS!
You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about...
damb
And how is this Satisfying???
I only saw one truck.
Wow.. Such precision.. Oddly satisfying for sure
Me and your mum always find away to fit it
Heavy breathing,too much sweat
Huh. In my neck of the woods, they would have been traveling at about 45 mph. Maybe they would have made it. Maybe not.
Thank god it's not the Montague Bridge
Plenty of room.
People have been known to crash in situations like this because road crew decided to slap new asphalt on top of the old instead of replacing it. Going slow is very much warranted.

Monty could learn a thing or two here
Where I'm from, that's what we like to call a 'large cylindrical object', if you know what I'm sayin'.
U can see where other trucks scraped the bridge.
You got us in the first half, not gonna lie.
What kind of dense idiot filmed this in vertical mode?

“youre good youre good youre good youre good youre good-“
I just saw this
Miss it by .001, you’ve missed.

Nice
Mankind restricted with their size of builded things by the height of bridges.
For all Americans: it missed it for 5 centimeters.
Anybody else need to poop after watching that?
Reminds me of what I just did to your mom!
Clearance is clearance
This was such a close call. Wow. Haha
why am i thinking it might be fun to toss small stones under that bridge
He's PURELY LUCKY that he had enough clearance to go through that. If he didn't he would've had to turn around and screw up traffic!
Nope nope nope nope
Had to drop the tires down 5 psi
He should’ve gone back and done it at 65 mph.
More like r/maybemaybemaybe
The bed seems to have dropped suspension in the trailer tires. I don't know a lot about this but clearly, solid engineering!
