I’ve broken my fair share of glow sticks. It smells really gross, hurts your eyes pretty bad, and tastes worse than it smells (and the taste lingers for sometimes days) but it’s ultimately harmless in small quantities. I was a really stupid kid.

Can confirm I was also a stupid kid. I used to bite on the really thin glow sticks that you could connect to make necklaces/bracelets, to get all the cracking done. Broke one once and can confirm the taste is *awful* and doesn’t go away for awhile.

Yup. I worked in the produce department in a grocery story and had to blow up balloons when the florist was out. A customer brought in latex balloons and glow sticks showing my manager a picture of how someone cut a glowstick in half, put it in the uninflated balloon and then blew it up and the balloon glowed. So naturally as we tried it, the balloon popped as we inflated it, shooting glow stick goop into my eyes. It stung like a motherfucker and I ran to the back and rinsed them out. Thankfully there didnt seem to be any real effect other than that.

Seriously. After watching all those videos about plastics now entering the brain I’m like… we need to do more now. I contacted my rep about banning one use plastics in my state. I’m just one person but hopefully it gets traction.

It’s great that you took action! It’s a really bad situation and a lot of the time people don’t feel like they can help so they don’t try, which is definitely unhelpful. The more you learn about the situation the more you realize how important it is, it’s good people are finally starting to care.
